Dodgers Had Strong Reasoning for Not Yanking Struggling Jack Flaherty in Game 5 vs. Mets

At first glance, it was rather head-scratching to see Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts leave his starter, Jack Flaherty, in Game 5 of the NLCS as the New York Mets uncorked run after run in the first three innings of the game.

Flaherty, through three innings of work, gave up eight earned runs on eight hits and four walks. Why would Roberts not turn to his bullpen when the Mets were rallying, up 3–1, to try to keep the game within reach?

Well, what's ahead might be on his mind. beat writer Jack Harris pointed out that a Game 6 on Sunday would be a likely bullpen game. Roberts wants to keep those arms fresh. Of course, Los Angeles has three games in the series and winning tonight would wrap it up, so it's valid to quarrel over if this was the right strategy or not for Game 5.

Importantly, the Dodgers have scored 30 runs across the first four games of this series. It's also not totally out there for Roberts to believe in the explosiveness of his offense with so much game left to play. It's certainly a more nuanced decision than it appears on the surface.

The truth is, as much as the Dodgers would love to close it out on Friday, with a 3-1 series lead they do not have as much reason as New York to be urgent. But dropping a game always runs the risk of handing momentum over to your opponent at the wrong moment.

Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid: Prediction, team news, injury updates and more

After surviving another scare to win late on against Burnley, Liverpool play host to Atletico Madrid in the hope of taking their winning run to five games in all competitions.

Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid team news

The big question heading into this one centres around Alexander Isak. Will the Swede make his Liverpool debut? Or will Arne Slot force Anfield to wait slightly longer before seeing their record arrival in action? If there’s a stage to introduce one of the best strikers in the world, it is the Champions League and it is in a game that will desperately need attacking quality.

There will also be question marks about the fitness of Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones. The former took quite the knock against Burnley and has already endured fitness struggles in the early stages of the campaign. Jones, meanwhile, didn’t make the trip to Turf Moor altogether and is yet to return to training ahead of the Atletico Madrid clash.

The Spanish club also have some frustrating injury concerns. As Fabrizio Romano confirmed, Diego Simeone will be without both Julian Alvarez and Johnny Cardoso for his side’s trip to Anfield. Losing Alvarez is a particular blow for the Argentine manager.

The former Manchester City forward has been the star of the show ever since arriving in Spain and he has continued that form so far this season – scoring once and assisting once in four games.

The task that Simeone now has is finding a similar star within his squad to replace Alvarez ahead of such a challenging test at Anfield.

Liverpool predicted line-up (4-2-3-1): Alisson; Bradley; Konate; Van Dijk; Robertson; Gravenberch; Szoboszlai; Gakpo; Wirtz; Salah; Ekitike

Atletico Madrid predicted line-up (4-4-2): Oblak; Llorente; Le Normand; Lenglet; Riggeri; Simeone; Gallagher; Koke; Gonzalez; Griezmann; Sorloth

Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid results

The Kop will still be stung by one of Atletico Madrid’s previous Anfield visits, in particular. But since Simeone’s side escaped with a shock 4-2 aggregate victory in extra-time to knock the Reds out of the Champions League in 2020, it has been the Premier League giants that have dominated.

Wednesday’s clash will be the first time that Slot has squared off against Atletico Madrid as Liverpool manager, but Simeone is still a manager that he knows well.

The last time that they faced each other, intense words were shared as they went back and forth on a disagreement. Given that Slot won round one with a late Feyenoord winner, there’s no doubt that he’ll be hoping for a similar victory in round two this evening.

Liverpool star names the current "problem" that he has with Anfield fans

The Anfield star has responded…

By
Tom Cunningham

Sep 16, 2025

The history of the fixtures tells us to expect goals, late drama, shock moments and perhaps even another Liverpool victory. Standing in the way of that will, of course, be a stern Atletico side.

It’s a game that the Spaniards could do with winning too, given that they’ve won just once in four La Liga games this season, which came last time out against Villarreal.

Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid prediction and odds

Will Liverpool make it five from five in all competitions or will Atletico Madrid cause Anfield misery in a repeat of 2020? According to the bookies, who have priced the Reds at 1/2 to pick up three points, Slot’s side are the favourites here. Atletico, meanwhile, are expected to face an uphill battle at 5/1 to win, and a draw sits at 16/5.

When it comes to results, Liverpool are up and running this season. But we are yet to see a performance that reflects their hefty summer spending spree. As is often the case, however, they may well be saving their most convincing performance for the Champions League and Anfield under the lights.

Prediction: Liverpool 2-0 Atletico Madrid

Premier League winner reveals real reason he walked out of Rangers medical

Whilst Rangers’ current transfer business has been fairly put under the microscope by fans and media alike, it wasn’t so long ago that a Premier League winner was walking out of an Ibrox medical.

Rangers' transfer window lacks experience

This time around, the Gers were incredibly busy. By the time that the deadline passed, they had welcomed as many as 14 fresh faces to officially get the era of the 49ers underway. But the jury is still out on those arrivals. Russell Martin is yet to win a game in the Scottish Premiership and his frontline has particularly struggled despite a number of attacking signings.

When the Scottish Premiership returns, the manager must simply hope for the 49ers’ investment to pay off and for the likes of Oliver Antman and deadline-day arrival Youssef Chermiti to prove their worth.

Elsewhere in the squad, midfield reinforcements such as Joe Rothwell and Thelo Aasgaard also arrived alongside defenders Nasser Djiga, Max Aarons and Derek Cornelius as Rangers overhauled the majority of their side.

Aarons has particularly struggled so far, though, and it was his red card in the second leg against Club Brugge which set Rangers on course for humiliation.

How many games Russell Martin has left at Rangers after new Ibrox sack update

It’s been a disastrous spell for the Gers boss.

1 ByTom Cunningham Sep 5, 2025

It’s not the first time that the Gers have signed from the Premier League and it’s unlikely to be the last, given Martin’s connections. That said, it wasn’t too long ago that they were attempting to welcome those who have not only played in England’s top flight, but came away with a winners’ medal.

Lescott reveals why Rangers move collapsed

The year was 2016, Mark Warburton was Rangers manager and Joleon Lescott had just left Aston Villa following their relegation from the Premier League. On paper, some saw an ageing, struggling defender, but Rangers saw the two-time Premier League winner who starred at Manchester City. And, as such, they attempted to secure his signature.

The move even got so far advanced that the defender was about to put pen to paper. Lescott looked destined to sign for the club, only to walk out of a medical with the Gers after their doctor found an injury problem following an initial scan.

Whether things would have worked out for Lescott in Scotland is a question that not even Rangers have an answer for, but they were soon proved right about their injury concern. Not long after his move to AEK Athens, the former Man City man was ruled out for the season after suffering a knee injury.

Better signing than Jackson: Aston Villa now chasing "magic" £40m star

Aston Villa are yet to show off their best in the Premier League this season.

It has been a disorienting summer for Unai Emery’s men after all, with the likes of Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins being consistently looked at by their fellow top-flight rivals, away from the disappointing departure of Jacob Ramsey to Newcastle United for £43m.

Still, with the transfer window wrapping up very shortly, the Spaniard will hope he can keep a firm grip on his top assets – away from the sad exit of Ramsey – with a bounce back from his side’s two winless opening matches also on the cards.

On top of that, he will further be eager to welcome in a few new additions before August is out, with a whole host of fresh signings reportedly on the Villans’ radar.

Minus splurging out £30m on Evan Guessand, Villa have been quiet in terms of flashy incoming signings.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

That could soon change if Emery and Co are finally successful in their advances to land Chelsea outcast Nicolas Jackson, with Villa having reportedly made him their top target for the remainder of the window.

A deal makes sense, particularly considering he’s already worked with Emery. However, he isn’t the only costly addition rumoured to be making the switch to Villa Park.

The Daily Mail Online have revealed that Villa are in the hunt to sign wantaway West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paqueta.

It won’t be straightforward for Villa to win the Brazilian, who has a hefty £40m price tag above his head, with the report further clarifying that Tottenham Hotspur are also keen to pick up another asset from their near-London rivals, having sounded out Paqueta as a target to now pursue after losing out on Eberechi Eze.

WestHamUnited's Lucas Paqueta celebrates scoring their first goal with Tomas Soucek

Yet, if Villa were to find themselves at the front of the queue for the lively 27-year-old, they might be about to win a far better signing than a hit-and-miss Jackson entering Emery’s group.

Why Paqueta could be a better signing than Jackson

Rampant transfer talk surrounding Watkins deserting Villa Park has died down in recent weeks.

Therefore, forking out £60m on a striker such as Jackson, who has been prone to widespread barren patches of form at Stamford Bridge, might not be the most sensible move, with £30m already shelled out on landing Guessand to enhance the Premier League side’s forward personnel.

Worryingly, Jackson has squandered a colossal 43 big chances across his last two league seasons at Chelsea.

His goal return of 24 league strikes when he isn’t being wasteful ultimately falls flat next to Watkins’ far superior 35 efforts across the same span.

While the former Villarreal forward might not be viewed as the most sensible use of money, landing Paqueta for £40m could be deemed a masterstroke if he can let his football do the talking in the West Midlands, away from being embroiled in off-the-field controversies at the London Stadium.

Indeed, Paqueta has stood out as a vibrant, versatile presence throughout his 122-game stay in East London, with his collection of 19 goals and 14 assists from those clashes seeing him line up in a plethora of different positions, showcasing precisely why he’s been described as “one of the best 10s in the world” by one data analyst.

Having been one of a select few to exit West Ham’s recent 5-1 loss with Chelsea with his head held high, too, having smashed home the Hammers’ opener, the Brazilian will be champing at the bit to line up alongside faces such as Watkins and Rogers, hoping he can elevate his game to their lofty standards in the process.

Well, he should be up for the test, having further been hailed as “magic” by U23 scout Antonio Mango.

Emery will also immediately want Paqueta’s energy from the middle of the park to rub off on his players after a lifeless opening to the season, with the Hammers’ number 10 winning a high six duels per game in league action throughout 2024/25.

Jackson could well go on to do a reasonable job up top in claret and blue, but with Paqueta once being touted for an £85m switch to Manchester City, snapping him up for just £40m is surely the better move to sign off on.

Villa already have Watkins and Guessand who can play up top, but adding another creative face to take the burden away from Rogers – particularly considering he could leave – would be a wise use of funds.

Nuno's new Elanga: Nottingham Forest working to sign "exceptional" £25m ace

Nottingham Forest are making headlines with one of the most eye-catching transfer pursuits of the summer.

Fresh from securing Europa League football, the Midlands club have intensified efforts to strengthen their squad, targeting several high-profile young talents from across Europe.

Forest have already confirmed the signings of Dan Ndoye, Igor Jesus, and Jair Cunha, with deals for James McAtee and Omari Hutchinson also nearing completion.

The package for McAtee is worth around £30m, while Hutchinson’s deal could break Forest’s transfer record at £37.5m.

Talks are also ongoing for Rennes forward Arnaud Kalimuendo, while Callum Hudson-Odoi is close to agreeing fresh terms at the City Ground.

This ambitious activity comes after manager Nuno Espírito Santo publicly voiced concerns about a lack of progress in the transfer market earlier this summer.

The club’s hierarchy appear to have responded.

With Europa League football guaranteed after Crystal Palace’s unsuccessful appeal to CAS demoted them to the Conference League, Forest should see this as the perfect moment to cement their status as one of the Premier League’s rising forces.

Among their boldest moves has been a bid for one of Manchester City’s most highly regarded academy graduates.

Nottingham Forest working to sign Man City talent

The target in question is 20-year-old Rico Lewis, a versatile full-back and defensive midfielder who has been with Manchester City since childhood.

His progress through the ranks has been notable.

A player already described by Pep Guardiola as “exceptional”, Forest submitted an opening offer of £25.8m, which was swiftly rejected.

According to Fabrizio Romano, negotiations are ongoing between the two clubs as the Tricky Trees work on a deal to snap him up from the Cityzens this summer.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Debuting at 17, Lewis soon became a regular part of Guardiola’s treble-winning squad in 2022/23, demonstrating maturity far beyond his years.

Last season, he made 48 appearances across all competitions, starting 37 of them, per Transfermarkt. Along the way, he scored twice and provided five assists, while his positional flexibility proved invaluable for City. Capable of operating at right-back, left-back, or stepping into midfield, Lewis embodies the modern tactical demands of top-level football.

For Forest supporters, the pursuit of Lewis evokes memories of another bold move for a Manchester United academy graduate – Anthony Elanga.

Signed in 2023 for £15m after struggling for opportunities at Old Trafford, Elanga quickly became a star at the City Ground.

Over two seasons, the winger contributed 11 goals and 21 assists in 82 appearances, per Transfermarkt, his form earning him a big-money switch to Newcastle United earlier this summer worth £55m.

Why Lewis could be the next Elanga

The data, as per FBref, reinforces why Lewis is regarded as one of the most exciting defensive prospects in Europe. Among positional peers last season, he ranked in the 99th percentile for pass completion (91.9%), highlighting his composure under pressure and his ability to maintain possession even in tight areas.

He also ranked in the 91st percentile for progressive passes (5.93 per 90 minutes) – evidence of his willingness to advance play rather than simply recycling possession. His attacking instincts are further illustrated by his ranking in the 87th percentile for touches in the attacking penalty area (2.45 per 90).

Such numbers place him in the company of players like Andrew Robertson, Jules Koundé, and Malo Gusto – names that underline the calibre of Lewis’ performances despite his relative infrequency in the starting line-up.

With five international caps already to his name and a market value of around £35m, he is a player who would normally be well beyond Forest’s reach. Whether they can prise Lewis away from the Etihad remains to be seen.

His contract runs until 2028, and City are under no financial pressure to sell. The rejected bid of £25.8m may have been opportunistic, testing the waters to see whether limited playing time in a stacked City squad could make Lewis or the club open to a move.

But even if the pursuit proves unsuccessful, it is another signal of Forest’s intent to continue their rapid rise.

Their business so far this summer already paints a picture of a club determined to compete on multiple fronts. Ndoye, Jesus, and Cunha have added depth, while the potential arrivals of McAtee, Hutchinson, and Kalimuendo would give Nuno a squad brimming with energy and creativity.

Lewis would represent a statement signing that underlines Forest’s ambition to attract players capable of starting for Europe’s elite.

Just as Elanga helped elevate Forest during his time at the club, the arrival of Lewis could usher in another era of growth and excitement at the City Ground.

Leeds leading race for "incredible" ace, ready to pay £24.5m release clause

Leeds United are now leading the race for an “incredible” attacker, and they are ready to trigger his release clause, according to a report.

Leeds looking to sign another attacker after Calvert-Lewin

Leeds are closing in on the signing of former Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with David Ornstein revealing the Englishman is now set to undergo a medical before completing a move to Elland Road.

However, Gary Lineker is not entirely convinced the 28-year-old has what it takes to be a success in Daniel Farke’s side, saying: “I suppose if you look back at his career there’s been a decent season or two. He’s got all the attributes [but], he’s not a clean finisher and that for a striker is an issue.

“He’s never going to be a 20/25 goals a season player even in a side that’s really attacking and has got creative players. I think in the end in football, you find your level.”

While Lineker doesn’t believe Calvert-Lewin is cut out to be a top striker even with a playmaker behind him, Leeds are now planning to add a new attacking midfielder to their ranks, and they have moved into pole position in the race for his signature…

Offer made: Leeds tabled near club-record £34.5m bid to sign "revelation"

The Whites have now tabled a big offer for a forward.

1 ByDominic Lund Aug 13, 2025

According to a report from Caught Offside, the Whites are now leading the race for Leicester City’s Bilal El Khannouss, having taken the most concrete steps to secure a deal, amid rival interest from the likes of Newcastle United, RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund.

Having already held talks with El Khannouss’ representatives and offered the attacking midfielder a £50k-a-week salary, the Premier League newcomers are now ready to trigger the £24.5m release clause in his Leicester contract.

"Incredible" El Khannouss could flourish at Elland Road

While the 21-year-old struggled to find his rhythm in a very poor Leicester side last season, picking up just five Premier League goal contributions, there are indications the youngster could be a success at Elland Road.

At times in the 2024-25 campaign, the Morocco-born playmaker did manage to impress, being lauded as “incredible” by talkSPORT writer Jack Johnson after impressing in his side’s 2-0 defeat against Manchester City.

Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White in action with Leicester City'sBilalEl Khannouss

The starlet also managed to make a good impression on Pep Guardiola, having confirmed the Man City boss complimented his performance after the match, saying: “He (Guardiola) said he was impressed by my play today. I am not. I know myself and this is the player I can be. I have to show that every week now.”

El Khannouss deserves another chance in the Premier League, and Leeds should look to finalise a deal before Newcastle or Dortmund step up their interest.
