Big name title-winning manager now open to replacing Amorim at Man United

Man United ruthlessly dismissed Ruben Amorim on Monday following a spectacular breakdown in relations, with the search now on for his successor.

The 41-year-old departed after just 14 months at Old Trafford, becoming the sixth permanent manager discarded since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.

Sky Sports state that Amorim’s emotional and inconsistent behaviour proved pivotal in United’s decision, with hierarchy concluding his stubborn refusal to adapt his rigid 3-4-3 system demonstrated he was out of his depth.

A heated Friday meeting with director of football Jason Wilcox deteriorated rapidly when Amorim’s tactical approaches were questioned, with the tactician not taking too kindly, according to insiders.

The final straw arrived hours after Sunday’s Leeds stalemate when Amorim insisted he came to be ‘the manager, not the coach’ — openly criticising Wilcox while demanding full control over tactical decisions.

ESPN report that Amorim felt micromanaged by superiors and lacked freedom to implement his vision, though United maintain they provided 100 percent backing, including £250 million spent since his appointment in late 2024.

According to Opta, Amorim departs with the worst win ratio and highest goals conceded per game of any United manager in the Premier League era, finishing 15th last season with 42 points — their lowest tally in over half a century.

The disastrous campaign included a Europa League final defeat to Tottenham, compounding supporters’ frustrations with his stubborn tactical approach.

However, there are those who will point to the fact that the Red Devils are still sixth in the table, level on points with Chelsea and just three points off a Champions League place.

Amorim could well have guided them back to the pinnacle of European football if he was given the chance, but now the Portuguese has departed, the search begins for his long-term successor.

Former United boss and club legend Ole Gunnar Solksjear is believed to be extremely keen on a caretaker role until the end of the season, with Michael Carrick also open to the prospect of being interim manager.

That is according to journalist Ben Jacobs, who also reports that ex-Barcelona boss Xavi has made his stance known on a potential move to Manchester.

Xavi 'open' to Man United move as Red Devils harbor doubts

Writing for GiveMeSport, Jacobs claims that Xavi himself is open to the prospect of joining United, but the club themselves actually harbor doubts over his possible appointment.

It is believed that the 45-year-old – who won a La Liga title at Barcelona in 2023 and another league crown with Qatari side Al-Sadd in 2021 – is genuinely tempted by Old Trafford.

However, it is currently unclear whether INEOS will consider the big-name tactician when factoring in his lack of Premier League experience, with the likes of Andoni Iraola, Marco Silva and Oliver Glasner all potentially up for grabs later this year.

Even when considering the fact he hasn’t coached in England before, Xavi’s experience managing clubs with huge pressure on the biggest stages is surely enough to get United at least thinking about his arrival.

Despite parting ways with the tactician, Barça president Joan Laporta once called him the best coach in world football.

Make no mistake, Xavi’s free agent status means his name will be mentioned more as United’s search for a new boss drags on, with some reports in Spain suggesting that talks are expected to take place.

Spurs now lining up £70m “monster” to upgrade on Solanke

Tottenham Hotspur will close the door on 2025 as the reigning Europa League champions, but that silver-laden success is tainted by the turmoil that has prevented the club from making headway on the domestic front.

While Ange Postecoglou’s dismissal was understandable after Spurs slumped to a 17th-place Premier League finish last season, Thomas Frank’s early reign has left much to be desired, though the weekend win at Crystal Palace has eased the pressure on the Danish tactician.

Now, it’s time to spend. The Lewis family have given the manager their backing. While Micky van de Ven’s contract renewal is taking precedence, the north Londoners are also in desperate need of a freshen-up in the final third.

Spurs planning to sign a new forward

Tottenham’s number nines have left something to be desired this season. Richarlison can’t stay consistent. Randal Kolo Muani has struggled to adapt. Dominic Solanke can’t stay fit. Reinforcements are needed.

Football.london’s Alasdair Gold has acknowledged Tottenham need to sign a left-back, following Destiny Udogie’s latest injury, and a left winger, following Heung-min Son’s summer sale to LAFC, but there is also a desire to land a top-class centre-forward.

And according to the well-connected correspondent, Porto striker Samu Aghehowa remains high in Johan Lange and Fabio Paratici’s reckoning.

Valued at £70m, the 21-year-old has been on Spurs’ radar for a while, and it’s beginning to look like a formal move could be in the pipeline.

Why Samu would be a Solanke upgrade

Chelsea tried to sign Samu in 2024 before he completed a cut-price move from Atletico Madrid to Porto, but this spell in Portugal may have bore dividends for the young striker.

Now, he’s ready for the Premier League, and he has the skills to become Spurs’ main man, even if Solanke, who completed a £55m move from Bournemouth last year, recovers his fitness levels. Indeed, Solanke, 28, has only played twice in the top flight this term.

He’s not there yet, but Samu has the potential to be “one of the best strikers in Europe”, according to journalist Zach Lowy, and his prolific performances in Portugal have underlined that potential.

Moreover, he’s got an eye for the continental stage, with nine goals from 14 Europa League appearances. This consistency across different spheres bodes well, and suggests that Samu could quickly leapfrog the struggling Solanke if added to Frank’s squad.

Not only a deadly goalscorer, Samu ranks among the top 16% of Liga Portugal forwards for shot-creating actions and the top 5% for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref, emphasising his creativity and pace.

This presence as a large, imposing striker with an eye for link-up play could indeed see Samu prove the perfect upgrade on Solanke, who created six big chances and won 4.3 duels on average in the Premier League last season, as per Sofascore, as well as scoring nine goals and supplying three assists.

It’s clear that Tottenham had a vision when they paid a hefty sum for Bournemouth’s talisman, but injuries have not been kind to the Three Lions man. Perhaps it’s time for a new, hungry, younger striker.

Talent scout Jacek Kulig has described the Spanish striker as a “true monster in the making”, and after a year-and-a-half in Portugal, sharpening his scoring ability, it might be time for Samu to make the move to the Premier League.

Dane Scarlett: Tottenham’s next Kane?

Antonio Conte could have another Harry Kane waiting in the wings at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Italian head coach is hugely light on options in the centre-forward department and that is something he and sporting director Fabio Paratici will be unable to rectify until the summer, having failed to sign anyone in the role this January.

With the north London outfit still in the FA Cup, where they will face Championship outfit Middlesbrough on Tuesday night, and firmly in the race for the top-four in the Premier League, we could well see the need for alternatives to the England international.

After all, he can’t be expected to remain 100% match fit if he starts, and plays the full duration, of every game. Therefore, Conte must seek an option from within and with the likes of Troy Parrott and Kion Etete enjoying loan spells away in the EFL, the burden call fall upon Dane Scarlett.

It’s become evident that the 17-year-old has already caught the manager’s eye, having come off the bench for a three-minute cameo in the resounding 4-0 win over Leeds on Saturday afternoon – his ninth senior appearance for the club.

He may have only played 282 minutes for the first team but Scarlett is a hugely promising goalscorer and one that has impressed in abundance for the academy system.

The talismanic teenager scored 23 goals in as many games for the U18s before being trusted to feature for the U23s, even despite his very young age. There, he has found the net four times across 12 appearances, as per Transfermarkt.

Conte isn’t the first manager to have seen something in the attacking gem. It was Jose Mourinho who handed him his debut and was in charge for his first direct goal contribution, an assist against Wolfsberger AC in the Europa League last season.

“He is a diamond, a kid with incredible potential,” he told BT Sport (via The Athletic) after that aforementioned clash.

“He has worked many times with the first team and that gives him a different personality. He is still 16, 17 soon (in March) and I believe next season he will be a first-team squad player because he has a lot of talent.”

Elsewhere, the Portuguese – who is now in charge of AS Roma in the Serie A – has also compared him to one of his former Manchester United stars, Marcus Rashford.

“He is going to be a fantastic player and I hope everything around him goes well. He is a striker, a number nine, I have been playing him from the sides similar to Marcus Rashford and he is very clever,” he once said.

On the above evidence, the Lilywhites faithful have plenty to be excited about with Scarlett and if Conte continues to keep him involved over the course of his tenure, then the 17-year-old could well become the next Kane at Hotspur Way.

In doing so, the young forward with bags of potential can save chairman Daniel Levy and the club millions of pounds in future transfer windows as they will not need to spend if he emerges to be half the talent of the England skipper.

Mundo drop Gvardiol to Spurs update

As per Mundo Deportivo, there has been a major update on Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer plans involving RB Leipzig sensation Josko Gvardiol and manager Antonio Conte.

The Lowdown: Conte eyeing star defenders…

Since the end of the January transfer window, it has been widely reported that Tottenham, and by extension managing director Fabio Paratici, are targeting the signing of a star defender this year.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Inter Milan colossus Stefan de Vrij is believed to be a personal target of Conte’s with Lille’s Sven Botman also firmly on the agenda (The Daily Star).

However, according to report from Spain, it appears the Italian has now personally set his sights on Gvardiol above all others.

The Latest: Gvardiol ‘chosen’ by Conte…

As per Mundo, Spurs’ head coach has ‘chosen’ the signing of Leipzig’s gem as his and the club’s ‘number one goal’ for next season.

Gvardiol apparently jumps ahead of both Botman and Villarreal star Pau Torres as Conte’s priority transfer target.

The Croatia centre-back is also capable of playing as a left-back and in front of the defence as a midfield anchor.

The Verdict: Interesting development…

Gvardiol is certainly turning heads with his form in the Bundesliga this season with German football experts having raved over the 20-year-old.

Alex Chaffer, a content producer for the German top flight’s official English channel, doesn’t hold back in praise of the starlet – calling him the ‘real deal’ and a ‘real star’ who ‘just keeps getting better’ (Twitter).

Reports from the continent suggest he could also leave for an affordable fee as Sport Bild (via Sport Witness) recently claimed that Leipzig value Gvardiol at around €25 million (£21m).

Taking this into account, it’s little wonder Conte has earmarked the player as a new top target.

Spurs must unleash Reguilon vs Man Utd

Tottenham look to continue their recent good form as they travel to take on Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

Antonio Conte’s side have picked up back-to-back wins in the Premier League in impressive fashion, and face a United team reeling from their derby day defeat against neighbours Manchester City last time out.

The Spurs boss will have one crucial decision to make at left wing-back, with Ryan Sessegnon out injured.

While a defensive reshuffle could potentially see Ben Davies move over to a more advanced role in the back five out on the left, the natural replacement is of course Sergio Reguilon.

The Spaniard had been a regular for much of the Premier League season, playing 20 matches in the top flight and scoring two goals and providing three assists in that time, coming off the bench to score against Everton most recently.

However, the last few weeks had seen Sessegnon usurp him in the pecking order, and the former Fulham starlet had finally started to show signs of the kind of promise that he displayed in his time at Craven Cottage.

News of his injury is a big blow for Conte, but in Reguilon, the Italian has someone equally as pacy and adventurous going forward and who could give opposition right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka real nightmares.

The 25-year-old’s ability to get forward is something that Conte has actively encouraged, with the left-back himself talking about the kind of job the Spurs boss wants him to do.

He said: “I’ve never played five at the back before. I have to learn quickly. The gaffer has told me he wants me to be solid in defence but at the same moment I have to arrive in the box, help the strikers, score goals, give assists. Now I have more of a chance to score goals and give assists. So let’s work.”

Given the torrid time that Wan-Bissaka had in trying to deal with the likes of Joao Cancelo, Jack Grealish and Bernardo Silva on Man City’s left flank last week, Reguilon’s rampaging runs from wing-back could be equally as dangerous for the former Crystal Palace defender to handle.

The £25.2m-rated Spaniard should unquestionably be the man to replace Sessegnon on Saturday evening.

Celtic: Kevin Campbell reacts to Cameron Carter-Vickers update

Pundit Kevin Campbell believes Tottenham defender Cameron Carter-Vickers will make his loan move at Celtic permanent in the summer, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Big Premier League interest

The Hoops have the option to make the centre-back’s stay a full time one at the end of the season for an initial £6m. The American has impressed under Ange Postecoglou in Glasgow, which has resulted in interest from a number of Premier League sides.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-copy-2/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Sources close to the player suggested that Leicester City and Wolves are now keen on the player’s services ahead of the 2022/23 season.

The Scottish Sun also shared an update in the week, suggesting the 24-year-old isn’t in Antonio Conte’s Tottenham plans but is wanted by Bournemouth and Watford.

The Latest: Campbell’s comments

Campbell, who contributes for Sky Sports, was quizzed on Carter-Vickers by Football Insider in a story shared on Friday morning following the updates regarding Premier League interest.

He thinks the defender will now choose Celtic, labelling it as a ‘smart’ decision.

“Carter-Vickers has done exceptionally well at Celtic.

“Sometimes, as a centre-half, you have to go for a club that’s the right fit. I think he fits Celtic perfectly.

“There is going to be interest from Premier League clubs but there’s no guarantees if you make that move.

“Right now, he is starting every week at a huge club. If they win the league they will be playing in the Champions League next season. Celtic ticks a lot of boxes right now.

“I think he’ll choose to stay and that would be the smart move. Wherever else he goes there will be a lot more competition for the centre-back spot. Staying would be the right choice in my eyes.”

The Verdict: Fingers crossed

No Celtic player has made more clearances per game or has been dribbled past on fewer occasions than Carter-Vickers, as per WhoScored, so it’s easy to see why he is attracting plenty of interest.

As we know, the Hoops have the option to make a move permanent, but ultimately, it will be down to the player.

McKenna to miss Nott’m Forest v Liverpool

Nottingham Forest will be without Scott McKenna for this evening’s FA Cup clash with Liverpool.

The Lowdown: McKenna a regular at Forest

The 25-year-old has been a key player for Forest this season, starting every single Championship game so far. He has also helped the club into the last eight of the FA Cup, playing every minute against Arsenal, Leicester City and Huddersfield Town.

Steve Cooper is already without defenders Steve Cook and Max Lowe for the visit of Jurgen Klopp’s side, and McKenna is the latest to be ruled out of the City Ground clash.

The Latest: Hamstring problem for McKenna

Nottinghamshire Live’s Sarah Clapson shared a story on Saturday afternoon, just over 24 hours before the quarter-final.

The story shared comments from Cooper, who confirmed that McKenna looks set to miss five weeks of action with a hamstring problem.

The Verdict: Huge miss for Forest

Not only is this a blow for the meeting with Liverpool this evening, but also for the club’s push for promotion to the Premier League.

You’d expect that the centre-back will miss at least the next five Championship fixtures as a result of his muscular problem, including what could be a crucial trip to fellow play-off contenders Luton Town next month.

Hopefully Forest will be able to cope without the Scotland international and stay in contention for a play-off spot, with McKenna possibly returning in time for the season’s run-in.

Leeds monitoring Rangers’ Ryan Kent

Leeds United are monitoring long-term target Ryan Kent ahead of a potential move for the winger in the upcoming summer transfer window.

What’s the story?

Last year, the Whites had a number of bids rejected for the Rangers ace, but that does not appear to have deterred them in their pursuit.

According to Football Insider, Kent remains on Leeds’ radar despite long-term admirer Marcelo Bielsa leaving the club, and the Premier League side could make a fresh move to sign the 25-year-old this summer.

Imagine him and Raphinha

Kent enjoyed an impressive campaign north of the border last term, scoring 13 goals and setting up another 15. His performances this year have been equally eye-catching, managing a whopping 15 assists in just 35 games across all competitions.

The £20k-per-week winger has earned rave reviews for his performances, not least from team-mate Conor Goldson, whopreviously  hailed him as “magnificent” and said: “He has got a lot of ability. (He is) 24-years-old, two-footed. It is not nice when he runs at you, I can tell you that personally from training. He has got everything.”

Former Rangers star Kris Boyd has previously waxed lyrical about the ex-Liverpool winger, saying: “There’s Ryan Kent who is phenomenal – he gets you off your seat. His numbers have increased season after season. Even if the team are not at the level we saw at the start of the campaign, he is still a threat. He is so comfortable with the ball – it is like has superglue in his boots!”

Neil Dewsnip, his former coach at England under-17 level, said: “He seems to relish the atmosphere, so I think he’s in the bracket of players who think ‘the bigger, the better’. Ryan is very exciting so, when he’s good he’s devastatingly good. But that’s a trait of a lot of wide players. The challenge is to be consistent and I’m sure that’s what Steven and his staff will be working to achieve.”

Having a dynamic winger like Kent to perhaps partner someone like Raphinha (if the Brazilian stays put at Elland Road) would be quite the formidable duo for Leeds going forward and would certainly leave a lot of Premier League defences terrified.

When West Brom wanted to sign Van Dijk

West Brom have been pretty active in the transfer market in the past, having splashed out significant sums of money on players like Karlan Grant, Jay Rodriguez and Nacer Chadli among others.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but one figure the club will now be wishing they had made a move to sign is Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk.

According to an article from the Express & Star, the Dutchman “came on the Baggies’ radar – along with a host of other clubs – while he was at Celtic.”

The article also adds that the former Hoops man “was extensively scouted and recommended to Tony Pulis,” but the club didn’t make a move to bring him to the Hawthorns before he eventually moved to Southampton in 2015.Former Baggies midfielder Darren Fletcher also revealed that he had recommended the Midlands club to sign Van Dijk, but they weren’t too keen to pay the money that was being touted for the defender at the time.During his time with the Saints, the centre-back scored seven goals in 80 appearances across all competitions following a £13m move. That was before making his mega-money journey to Liverpool in the 2018 January transfer window for a fee of £75m.Since becoming a Reds player, the 30-year-old has been a revelation for Jurgen Klopp’s side, making 168 appearances in which he’s found the back of the net 16 times as well as winning the Premier League and Champions League. To further highlight the defender’s rise to football’s upper echelons, he won the 2018/19 UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award, beating the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. With that in mind, it’s hardly a surprise that Roy Keane dubbed him a “beast of a man” back in 2020.Labelled as a player that has “got everything” in his game by Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha, the £49.5m-rated defender has once again shown what a formidable defensive unit he is for the Merseyside club by making more clearances (119) than any other player in Liverpool’s squad as well as winning an impressive 88.9% of the tackles he’s made.According to Salary Sport, the 6 foot 4 defensive titan is currently picking up a weekly wage of £240k-per-week, making him the highest earner at Liverpool, which is understandable given what he’s done for the team since his arrival. From a West Brom point of view, it’s hard to see this being anything other than a howler from Pulis by not making the most of the recommendations that were sent his way about Van Dijk, leaving the Midlands club to have nothing but nightmares about what could have been.In other news: WBA heading for disaster over “powerful” 30-goal “diamond”, supporters will be fuming

Sheffield Wednesday now halve takeover price in boost for Mike Ashley

Sheffield Wednesday have now reportedly halved their asking price to sell the club, with one “consortium” back in the race to complete a takeover as a result.

McEvoy drops out of Sheffield Wednesday takeover race

Having initially set a soft deadline of December 5, Sheffield Wednesday’s administrators will be frustrated that a takeover of the club is yet to be completed. The saga is simply rolling on, as if the Owls’ downward spiral towards League One following their point-deduction when they first entered administration earlier this season.

Off the pitch, it has been a waiting game. But on the pitch, the players have suffered the consequences. To make matters worse, manager Henrik Pedersen could now be facing an injury crisis ahead of a transfer window that is incredibly unlikely to feature extensive additions, if any at all.

As for the takeover itself, reports claimed last week that Mike Ashley and the Storch group were leading the race to buy the club until fresh rumours emerged that John McEvoy had dropped out of contention as part of the latter.

The Storch group have reportedly found a new partner, but it remains to be seen whether that will be enough to jump ahead of Ashley. The former Newcastle United man has been a consistent name in the takeover race and could be on his way back to English football.

It’s not over yet, though. According to The Star’s Joe Crann, Sheffield Wednesday have now halved their asking price down from around £30m to as little as £15m, opening the door for a previously interested party to re-enter the race.

Sheffield Wednesday bidder returns at new price

Keen to attract other candidates, the Owls have lowered their price. As a result, as per Crann, “at least one consortium” who were previously interested in buying the club are now set to re-enter the race.

The Star reporter said on X: “Understand that offers less than the mooted £30/35m are now set to be considered when it comes to the sale of Sheffield Wednesday, with at least one consortium who was formerly interested set to step back into the mix. Around £15-20m could be enough.”

Sheffield Wednesday set to make "critical decision" as takeover bid launched

The Owls are yet to name their new owners.

ByTom Cunningham

This is also a major boost for Ashley, who had reportedly submitted the lowest bid out of the remaining candidates. Now that the Owls have lowered their price, his offer may well be deemed acceptable.

It’s certainly an unexpected twist, but one that administrators may have deemed necessary to finally welcome a new era at Hillsborough. As the new year approaches, there simply must be some good news on the horizon for Sheffield Wednesday fans.

Championship relegation is inevitable and another point-deduction could still arrive, yet new owners would at least spark belief that the future could be so much brighter.
