Former West Brom star Jonathan Greening reacts to Darren Moore’s sacking

[ad_pod ]Former West Bromwich Albion star and ex-teammate of Darren Moore, Jonathan Greening, has reacted on Twitter following the sacking of the 44-year-old on Saturday, and it’s fair to say he isn’t happy.

The west Midlands outfit decided to wield the axe on the former centre-back following the 1-1 draw against a lowly Ipswich Town at The Hawthorns at the weekend, which left them nine points adrift of the automatic promotion spots with 10 fixtures remaining.

While the Baggies still lie in fourth position in the Championship, one point from the previous nine – and successive defeats against fellow top-two contenders Sheffield United and Leeds United – meant that Moore paid the price.

Albion owner Lai Guochuan will now be looking to make an appointment that results in the club returning to the Premier League at the first time of asking, but it is looking more and more likely that they will have to do it via the play-offs unless there is a massive slip from either leaders Norwich City or Marcelo Bielsa’s Yorkshire outfit.

Greening took to Twitter to have his say on the decision, and he wrote: “Absolutely embarrassing decision from an owner who hasn’t a clue about football.”

The 40-year-old clearly thinks the wrong call has been made, and it was a very surprising one when you see how West Brom are doing compared to the other two teams that joined them dropping down to England’s second tier – Stoke City and Swansea City.

That said, Guochuan clearly wants promotion this term, and if he didn’t feel that Moore could deliver then you can’t blame him for making a change – even if it is a controversial one.

Manchester United: The dark side Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s fairytale

The problems are seemingly mounting for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. After a dream start, the last two defeats to Arsenal and Wolves, who knocked them out of the FA Cup, have stung his team’s booming confidence and there’s a low feeling amongst the squad, with the Sun claim Solskjaer accused his United players to reverting to their ways under Jose Mourinho.

Ah, the Manchester United of old.

Solskjaer will now need to rebuild his side’s confidence, but more importantly, get his own head in the right place. While the international break is perfect to rethink his approach for the remaining games, the Norwegian’s been struck with even more bad news throughout this week. Anthony Martial, Luke Shaw, Nemanja Matic and Romelu Lukaku all pulled out of their respective international teams citing injuries and the dark clouds to have gathered over Old Trafford in recent weeks don’t look to be going away.

As if injuries hadn’t hampered his momentum enough already! As some crucial games, including a UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona, approaches, he’ll need a fully fit squad in hand to battle on the two remaining fronts. Indeed, constant injuries force him to reshape United’s system every now and then, causing disbalance and confusion which led to the back-to-back defeats.

It’s his disappointing rotation which has been a cause for concern in recent weeks and he cannot afford to improve upon that with more players getting injured. Despite all his positivity, he must be a frustrated man inside to be dealing with all these problems after that dreamy night in Paris.

If the injury troubles don’t end soon, Solskjaer’s wheels could completely fall off come May. He might still be favourite for the job amongst the supporters, but the Norwegian needs to keep his emotions in check and hope his essential men regain fitness to help finish United’s season on a high note.

The Chalkboard: Jan Vertonghen should be Tottenham’s first choice left-back

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham’s full-back options certainly aren’t what they used to be. Gone are the days of the marauding Danny Rose and Kyle Walker flying up and down the flanks to great effect, such as they did in the 2016/17 season when Mauricio Pochettino’s men pushed Chelsea for the title.

What’s changed?

Nowadays, Spurs are perhaps at their weakest in the wide defensive areas. All three of Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker-Peters and Serge Aurier have failed to make the shirt their own this season when given the opportunity, but it is over on the left where there is a solution right under Pochettino’s nose.

Rose and Ben Davies have failed to perform consistently this season, just like their peers over on the right – it was the England international Rose whose individual error led to Southampton’s equaliser on Saturday, before Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men went on to win.

Kieran Trippier’s own goal against Chelsea looks even funnier up close. Just ask Thogden in the video below…

Every full-back just seems to have a mistake in them, and not one of them seems to be hugely trusted by Pochettino.

What’s the solution?

Jan Vertonghen. The ever-dependable Belgian international has played at left-back on three occasions this season, and has starred everytime.

Most recently, the former Ajax man played in the position against Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of the Champions League last 16 tie, where he was awarded the WhoScored Man of the Match award for his showing.

The 31-year-old grabbed a well-taken goal against the Germans, set up Heung-min Son for the opener with an inch-perfect cross, and also managed to help himself and his colleagues in defence to a clean sheet against one of Europe’s most free-flowing attacks.

He is an expendable figure at centre-back purely because Pochettino also has Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez to call upon, and whilst the pair are still at the club, Spurs should be using Vertonghen at left-back.

The Chalkboard: Adama Traore impresses at wing-back with Matt Doherty rested

[ad_pod ]

Wolverhampton Wanderers starting XI regular Matt Doherty was left on the substitutes’ bench for the 2-0 win against Cardiff City on Saturday with winger Adama Traore starting in his spot at right wing-back, and his position could now be under serious threat.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Nuno Santo decided to take action following the 1-0 defeat against Huddersfield Town in midweek by making five changes for the visit of the Bluebirds, with a report in The Express & Star suggesting that Doherty was one of the players that was rested, rather than dropped.

Summer addition Traore has found first-team minutes hard to come by this term with the majority of his outings being cameos from the substitutes’ bench, but he was finally given a rare chance after being named in the manager’s side.

The 23-year-old may have been slightly nervous beforehand about playing a role that requires plenty of defending, but it certainly didn’t show on the pitch as he excelled.

Doherty in danger?

He could well be.

We’ve found Raul Jimenez’s No. 1 fan and… it’s a little scary. Check out the video below to see for yourself…

The 27-year-old has started all but two of Wolves’ 29 Premier League fixtures during the current campaign, with the only other time he didn’t make the XI being in the 4-3 win against Leicester City in January.

On that occasion he came straight back in, but it might not be so simple for him this time around.

Santo may have had some slight doubts as to whether Traore could adapt defensively, and while the west Midlands outfit weren’t up against the greatest of opposition he still did an impressive job before returning to his favoured wing position early in the second half.

The Spaniard can finally give Doherty the competition for his spot that has been severely lacking and probably led to some complacency on the Republic of Ireland international’s part.

Got a job on his hands: Villa fans react as Bjarnason turns down chance to leave

[ad_pod ]

Icelandic international Birkir Bjarnason turned down the chance to leave Aston Villa in the last transfer window in a bid to stay and fight for his place, according to Birmingham Live.

It was thought that Villa were trying to move him on because of fears over financial fair play with the midfielder on a wage of £30k a week. However, despite interest from Fenerbahce he wanted to stay.

Reacting to the news on Twitter, supporters of the Villans shared a mixture of views on the out of favour star.

Some praised him, explaining it was good to have players with that sort of attitude in the team, but at the same time claimed it would be difficult to get in ahead of the likes of John McGinn and Jack Grealish.

One came to the conclusion that he’ll likely leave in the summer, with competition for places in midfield healthy.

The 30-year-old has been out of favour with manager Dean Smith and has started just 11 times in the Championship this term. The last of those starts came back in January.

Here’s what Villa fans have been saying about the experienced international.

Get him out! Crystal Palace fans want Roy Hodgson gone after FA Cup exit

[ad_pod ]

Crystal Palace fans have angrily taken to Twitter after being knocked out of the FA Cup by Watford at the quarter-final stage, with an opportunity to play at Wembley lost after a spineless performance.

Roy Hodgson’s men were in poor form last week as they lost a huge game against arch-rivals Brighton on their own turf, and followed that lacklustre performance up with another gutless showing at Vicarage Road on Saturday.

In this era of ‘big 6’ dominance, has finishing 7th become as good as winning a trophy? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have their say in the video below…

The Eagles lost 2-1 thanks to goals from Etienne Capoue and Andre Gray, despite a well-taken Michy Batshuayi effort getting Palace level midway through the second half.

Naturally, the Palace fans are getting restless after watching their season peter out into nothing other than a boring fight against relegation. Additionally, the south London-based side also have the second worst home record in the league this season, which only adds to the supporters’ frustration.

The general feeling is that Palace are standing still and making no progress under Hodgson, and fans of the Eagles on Twitter want the 71-year-old gone…

2 clear reasons why Wolves can challenge for the top four next season

Wolves took a fabulous point away from Stamford Bridge today as they held Chelsea to a 1-1 draw.

But for a moment of magic from Eden Hazard too, Wolves would have been heading back up to the Midlands with all three points, but it was once again a fine display on the whole from Nuno Santo’s men.

Wolves have been something of a breath of fresh air to the top flight this term, and we here in the Tavern feel that with a few tweaks here and there, they could well be challenging for the top four in the coming couple of seasons.

Santo is doing a superb job, and it got us thinking a bit more in depth about if Wolves can indeed challenge for those top four spots.

With that, we looked at TWO reasons why Wolves can challenge for the Champions League places from as soon as next seaso…

They’re a well drilled unit

One thing Santo has got his team doing is playing to a system which suits and all the players are recognisable with.

This means they can grind out points just like they did today by sticking to a game plan.

With a bit of added quality to the ranks, this is a solid foundation to build on going forward and could prove very fruitful for Wolves in the long run.

They’ll spend if they need too

Backed by mega rich owners, Wolves won’t be afraid to splash the cash if they feel Santo can get them into the Champions League spots.

They’ve already shown that they are willing to go into the European market and make big money plays, and they might well just do so again.

A top striker, and another midfielder wouldn’t go amiss, but they certainly have the financial muscle to compete if needed.

West Brom: Please stay as far away from Sam Allardyce as possible

The search for a permanent manager continues at West Bromwich Albion.

Fun, right?

Obviously, they’ve rewarded Jimmy Shan’s impressive start by seemingly, but unofficially, extending his temporary deal until the end of the season to give themselves some time to search for a new manager.

While there’s always a chance for Shan to pull off an Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, he’ll surely have to win Premier League promotion for that. However, there’s a good chance even after that they’ll want a more experienced figure. So, the latest man to be linked with the job is the controversial Sam Allardyce after the former England manager hinted on talkSPORT he would possibly be keen, though appointing him could be a disastrous move.

Big Sam might have a respectable CV, yet his recent work has undone his good reputation, making him look like a relative dinosaur. Ever the controversial sacking as the Three Lions’ manager, he producing polarizing results back in club football. Last time out at Everton, Big Sam might’ve saved them from relegation, but made them play the worst football possible.

Were the Toffees ever really going to go down? Probably not.

In the Premier League, the Merseyside outfit were ranked 20th in total shots on goal, 19th for shots on target and 16th for passing accuracy (stats via Sky Sports). Despite having a luxurious squad, he made the fans endure some shocking, negative football during his short stay at Goodison Park.

At West Brom, where the fans now expect incisive attacking football after the awful Tony Pulis years, that isn’t acceptable.

The owners need to be assertive in not bringing in Allardyce. He’ll take them many steps back, get them playing boring, dirty football which they’ve been fighting against.

Keeping an insider in Jimmy Shan is a much better option as he’ll retain the Baggies’ values, something Big Sam will work against into ruining West Brom’s reputation.
