Wolverhampton Wanderers: Tim Spiers delivers verdict on Patrick Cutrone

The Athletic’s Tim Spiers joined broadcaster Jacqui Oatley on another episode of The Molineux View podcast to discuss what happens to Wolverhampton Wanderers’ man on loan, Patrick Cutrone.

The 22-year-old forward is currently out on loan at Fiorentina but it’s still pretty unclear what will happen to him at the end of his deal, with the recent events largely complicating all matters in football.

But Spiers believes nothing will change with his contract and once he plays a certain number of games for the Italians, they will be obliged to buy him from Wolves.

Here’s what he said for The Molineux View podcast (17/3/2020): “It’s written into the contract they’ve got to play a certain number of games. So at the moment, Cutrone’s is an option to buy. And it becomes an obligation if he plays a certain number of games. So that’s written into his contract. And I don’t see that changing.”

Cutrone has so far played a total of nine games for his new team, bagging one goal and assisting another one under his belt in the process as well though the future is obviously uncertain.

Rangers: Fans discuss Davie Cooper’s strike against Aberdeen

Rangers fans were discussing Davie Cooper’s strike against Aberdeen during the League Cup final back in 1987.

In a pulsating encounter, Gers found themselves a goal down inside the opening nine minutes after a strike from Jim Brett. However, Cooper soon had them on levels terms after striking a quite sensational free-kick into the top left-hand corner (via Rangers). It proved a crucial equaliser as the Glasgow outfit went on to lift the trophy following a 5-3 win on penalties.

One fan labelled the free-kick as ‘stunning’.

Overall, the former Scotland international had a quite sensational career with the Ibrox outfit, making over 550 appearances and scoring 79 goals during his 13 seasons at the club (via Fitba Stats). He was lauded by former colleague Derek Johnstone, who claimed Cooper was the best player he ever played with. Supporters were left talking about his famous strike against the Scottish outfit as they took to Twitter to react to a club post. Here is a selection of tweets:

Gers fans, is this one of the best free-kicks you’ve ever seen? Let us know your thoughts below!

Everton’s Theo Walcott stays amused with obstacle course

As the days pass during lockdown, footballers could be forgiven for growing bored and fed up with the new life they find themselves in, but instead it has sparked creativity amongst some.

Various social media challenges have kept players occupied and given them a chance to display their football skills, while the likes of Wolves’ Luke Matheson have tried their hand at other activities, such as baking.

Theo Walcott has also come up with his

/B-NYg0enmmf/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link” data-lasso->unique mode of entertainment, and he has created an obstacle course in his own garden made up of various household equipment.

In typical fashion the course poses a variety of challenges, which is credit to the winger for his inventive work, though he did complete it with ease – which is perhaps to be expected.

He videoed himself completing the course alongside the Mission Impossible theme tune playing in the background, with Walcott attempting to recreate the best moves of Tom Cruise in the movie franchise.

It will be intriguing to see if his creativity catches on. He has asked fans what they have been up to so he may look to replicate what they have been doing in order to pass the next month without football.

In more negative news, one Everton player has recently got in trouble for breaking recently implemented rules…

Tottenham fans react to Issa Diop link

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for West Ham United defender Issa Diop.

According to an exclusive report from TEAMtalk, the French defender has told the east London outfit that he wants to leave the club this summer.

Spot the fact from the fib: Are these Premier League records true or false?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Spurs are leading the race for his signature but Manchester United and Everton are also keeping tabs on the situation.

The 23-year-old defender has been a regular at the heart of the Hammers’ defence this season, featuring in 23 Premier League matches and scoring three goals in the process.

With plenty of scope for improvement and experience in England’s top flight to boot, it’s perhaps little surprise that Jose Mourinho is interested in a transfer swoop.

In response to reports, plenty of supporters endorsed the club’s interest and suggsted he would be a brilliant addition to the defensive unit.

One fan, meanwhile, claimed he’d rather see RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano arrive at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Here’s how the fans reacted to the club’s link with Diop…

Sheffield United: Blades fans rave over footage of John Fleck’s son

Loads of Sheffield United supporters reacted to a tweet from the club’s official Twitter account sharing a clip of John Fleck’s son demonstrating an unbelievable first touch.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, many football clubs have resorted to keeping their fans entertained with an array of hilarious clips and iconic montages, and the Blades posted a video of the midfielder’s child practising his skills in the back garden.

After arriving at Bramall Lane from Coventry City on a free transfer in July 2016, Fleck has helped Chris Wilder’s side spring from the lower regions of League One all the way to the upper echelons of the Premier League, scoring 5 goals and providing 2 assists in 25 appearances in the English top fight this season. The 28-year-old has won 2 caps for the Scottish national team so far and he is currently valued at £5.85m via Transfermarkt.

Unsurprisingly, loads of SUFC fans replied to the club’s post, with many urging the board to “sign him up” and offer him a contract, with one fan pleading with Prince Abdullah bin Musa’ad to “sign him up.”

West Ham and Southampton target Joakim Maehle drops transfer hint

Reported West Ham United transfer target Joakim Maehle has spoken about his future at Belgian club Genk, in an interview with Danish publication Ekstra Bladet.

What did he say?

The Danish defender has attracted plenty of interest as a result of his displays for Genk, with West Ham, Southampton and Crystal Palace all linked with his signature.

The Saints reportedly made an £11.5million bid for the full-back in January and it is expected that a number of clubs could return for him this summer.

Speaking this week, the 22-year-old did little to quell talk of a potential move and West Ham will certainly have taken note.

“The interest from Southampton was concrete, but their bid was not high enough,” Maehle told Ekstra Bladet.

“But I still believe that one day I might end up in Southampton and the Premier League.

“My agent doesn’t tell me everything, but as I said, only Southampton have really been in the picture.”

Good move

West ham have a questionable record in the transfer market in recent years, but this looks like a move that could work out.

Maehle is a young defender with plenty of potential and would ideally add to the young core that the club are looking to develop.

At £11.5m he is still relatively affordable in a transfer market that will undoubtedly be affected by the global economic situation, so this could prove a smart pick-up.

In-form Australia aim to pass strong Caribbean test

Match facts

September 22, 2012
Start time 1930 local (1400 GMT)

Big Picture

Australia and West Indies entered this tournament with vastly different expectations placed upon them. Although the Australians were quietly confident, plenty of people saw their form, ranking and not-so-settled side as an indication they would struggle. West Indies came in as one of the tournament favourites, the first time in a long while that they have been considered such a strong chance. Australia have already overcome Ireland and should West Indies do so as well, both these sides will progress to the next stage. But West Indies don’t want to be placing themselves under any unnecessary pressure when they take on Ireland so victory in this, their first match, is important. Not that Australia will be a pushover – the teams drew 1-1 when they met for two T20s in the Caribbean earlier this year.Everywhere you look in the West Indies line-up there are men seemingly made for T20. Chris Gayle at the top of the order. Kieron Pollard in the middle. Dwayne Bravo, Darren Sammy and Andre Russell. The best player in the IPL this year, the offspinner Sunil Narine. And the highly under-rated legspinner Samuel Badree, who has the best economy rate of any bowler in T20 history (with a minimum qualification of 300 balls). Badree goes for 4.59 an over, on average. If every bowler in a team managed that, the opposition wouldn’t even rack up a hundred. But for all of their star power, West Indies haven’t really turned their potential into results. In the past year, they have won four T20s and lost four. Overall, they are the only ICC Full Member besides Bangladesh to have lost more T20s than they have won. Much greater consistency is what they will require to go all the way in this tournament. For Australia, the opening victory against Ireland has provided a handy bit of breathing space and they know that victory against West Indies will put them through to the Super Eights. There have been minor health worries for the veteran spinner Brad Hogg and the fast bowler Mitchell Starc over the past couple of days, but both are still in contention to take their places against West Indies.

Form guide (completed matches, most recent first)

Australia WWLLW
West Indies WWLWL

Watch out for

On the ICC’s rankings for T20 international allrounders, it is Shane Watson and then daylight. Against Ireland on Wednesday he showed why, with 3 for 26 and 51 from 30 deliveries, ensuring there were no nasty surprises for the Australians in their opening game. Notably, he also made important contributions in both T20s against West Indies earlier this year in the Caribbean, and his 69 in the first match was the highest score in the two-game series.Australia are aware of their potential weakness against high-class spinners with hard-to-read variations – Saeed Ajmal showed that in the UAE recently – and Sunil Narine fits that category. He baffled the Australians during the ODIs in the West Indies earlier this year, although they managed to survive against him in the T20s that followed. Australia’s coach Mickey Arthur believes attacking Narine might be the best approach. “He’s always going to be a factor, like Ajmal for Pakistan and [Ajantha] Mendis for Sri Lanka,” Arthur said. “I think if we can put him under just a little bit of pressure, that’s something we haven’t been able to do with the spinners, we’ve always been a couple of wickets down, so we haven’t been able to attack Ajmal, or Narine in the West Indies where it turned massively.”

Team news

Australia had a couple of minor concerns in the lead-up to the match, with the veteran spinner Brad Hogg having missed training on Thursday due to a headache and flu-like symptoms, while Mitchell Starc also sat out due to gastro. Xavier Doherty has rejoined the squad having made a quick dash home to be at the birth of his child, while Clint McKay and Ben Hilfenhaus are the backup fast men in the squad. However, the captain George Bailey on Thursday played down the possibility of Starc and Hogg missing the match.”They’re all right,” Bailey said. “Training is quiet without Hoggy, [but] he’s pretty good and from all reports Starcy was certainly on the mend. We’ll make a call.”Australia (possible) 1 David Warner, 2 Shane Watson, 3 Michael Hussey, 4 George Bailey (capt), 5 Cameron White, 6 Glenn Maxwell, 7 Matthew Wade (wk), 8 Daniel Christian, 9 Pat Cummins, 10 Mitchell Starc, 11 Brad Hogg/Xavier Doherty. The West Indies selectors have plenty of options and their final decision will depend on how they believe the side should be balanced. Dwayne Smith and Chris Gayle appear likely to open and there is the possibility of a dual spin attack with Narine and Badree likely to enjoy working on the pitches in Sri Lanka.West Indies (squad) Chris Gayle, Dwayne Smith, Lendl Simmons, Johnson Charles, Darren Bravo, Marlon Samuels, Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Darren Sammy (capt), Denesh Ramdin, Andre Russell, Samuel Badree, Ravi Rampaul, Sunil Narine, Fidel Edwards.

Pitch and conditions

The pitch at the Premadasa was hard on the opening day of matches there on Wednesday, and there were runs available for the batsmen. It is expected to remain reasonably hard for the early stages of the tournament.

Stats and trivia

  • West Indies could find themselves a little rusty if they are forced to chase in this match, for they have batted first in their past eight T20 internationals. The last time they chased was against India in Trinidad last year, the only time in the past two years West Indies have batted second
  • Chris Gayle’s strike rate of 153.47 in the World T20 is the highest amongst players who have batted at least ten World T20 innings

Quotes

“It’s good to come into the tournament and have people show us the kind of respect and admiration to rate us among the top teams.”
“They are one of the best fielding sides around in the world and that counts for a lot in T20.”

Focus on internationals in NCL kick-off

Defending champions Rajshahi Division will hog half the attention when they take on Dhaka Division in Mirpur in one of four opening-day matches in the National Cricket League on Saturday. The other half of the attention will be on several Bangladesh players who are expected to play the first two rounds of matches after the Bangladesh Cricket Board made their NCL appearances obligatory ahead of the West Indies series. The most notable appearance would be that of Tamim Iqbal, captain of Chittagong Division that takes on Dhaka Metropolis at the Shaheed Chandu Stadium on the opening day. Tamim hasn’t played in the domestic first-class competition for the past five years. In fact, Chittagong haven’t availed his services since he made his Test debut, the last time being in November 2007. Tamim is not the only one however.Mushfiqur Rahim, Abdur Razzak, Mashrafe Mortaza, Rubel Hossain and Shakib Al Hasan have also been largely unavailable for the NCL over the past five years, all having played less than ten games each. Among these, only Razzak played last season while Mahmudullah, Nasir Hossain and Shafiul Islam didn’t play a single NCL game in 2011-12.Injuries in the case of Mortaza over the last few years and Rubel last season notwithstanding, scheduling difficulty has been the most used justification to explain the no-shows. Most of these players are touring or involved in an international series at home when the first-class tournament is on, but it has been seen on several occasions that the players themselves have been unwilling to play the less glamorous competition.Shakib, who hasn’t been named in the initial Khulna Division squad, will complete his Kolkata Knight Riders campaign in the Champions League Twenty20 on October 21 so he could be expected to make his first appearance for Khulna since December 2008 in the second round of matches from November 2. He played eleven games for Worcestershire in the 2010 season, but hasn’t played domestic first-class cricket anywhere since then. The lack of international-level cricketers in the NCL has upset the image of first-class cricket, and to an extent done disservice to the country’s Test fortunes. A long-term solution is hardly on the horizon though later this season the franchise-based first-class tournament could see a lot of these players. Tamim, however, is likely to be playing Twenty20 and two first-class matches in New Zealand at the time.Despite sharing the focus with the appearance of the Bangladesh cricketers, Rajshahi would be expected to make a winning start as they are the best prepared team having been in training for more than six months. Dhaka Division on the other hand are the least prepared, having held a short campaign for only two weeks leading up to the tournament.Sylhet and Chittagong have also followed Rajshahi’s route of preparation this season but Dhaka Metropolis, Rangpur Division, Barisal Division and Khulna Division have maintained tradition like the Dhaka Division side.In the other two first-round games beginning on October 20, last season’s runners-up Khulna Division play at home against Barisal Division while Sylhet Division play away to Rangpur Division.

Suggested Solutions: How can Liverpool shoot back to form vs United?

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool’s 0-0 draw with Bayern Munich on Tuesday becomes a more respectable result when more thought is given to it but, to Jurgen Klopp and his players, the stalemate will have been a disappointment.

The Reds had a handful of golden chances to tilt the tie in their favour ahead of the second leg in March but their finishing was uncharacteristically woeful, with Sadio Mane particularly guilty – the Senegalese scuffed wide from six yards out after the ball fell to him in the box.

Unfortunately for the Merseysiders, there is no respite after that tough game – they face bitter rivals Manchester United in the league this weekend and must bounce back from their Champions League setback. How, though, can the Anfield outfit ensure they instantly return to the level of form that has put them at the forefront of this season’s Premier League title race?

Use Henderson to bypass midfield

Jordan Henderson’s passing was extremely impressive on Tuesday night and the England international would have recorded one of the assists of the season had Mohamed Salah managed to get more power on his toe-poke once the Liverpool captain looped an inch-perfect, long ball over the top of Bayern’s defence.

While the 28-year-old might not have Paul Pogba’s power, pace, dribbling skills or haircut, his eye for a pass and industry can be huge assets for the Reds if utilised properly.

Since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s arrival at Old Trafford, United fans have become familiar with the sight of Pogba regaining possession in his own half and pinging balls in behind towards an on-rushing Marcus Rashford, whose recent lethality in front of goal has seen the pair strike up a dangerous partnership.

Liverpool have their Rashford in Salah and their Pogba in Henderson. They must look to out-counter their opponents at every opportunity and bypass the midfield.

Play 4-2-3-1

Klopp has strayed away from his favoured 4-3-3 this season, experimenting with a 4-4-2 and a 4-2-3-1 – if he wants to put another blot on Solskjaer’s United résumé, he must elect to line his players up in the latter on Sunday.

The formation offers far more defensive security and, if Henderson is to start – which he should after playing so well on Tuesday – he will need some help in the middle. The timely return of Virgil van Dijk from suspension means Fabinho can return to his natural position at the base of midfield and the Brazilian’s bite will be essential if the Reds are to negate Pogba.

Get Daniel Sturridge in the game

If Liverpool gained anything from their draw with Bayern, it would be that they need a top-class striker who can put the ball in the back of the net nine times out of ten as, for all their quality, the front three tend to need a hatful of chances to score – luckily enough, they create as many, but in the big games they will get far less.

Mixed fortunes for English sides in the Champions League so how far off are they from dominating Europe’s top table? The Pl>ymaker FC squad discuss in the video below…

Sturridge, whether Liverpool fans like it or not, is the most natural finisher at Anfield and Klopp should give the 26-cap international a shot up front – with Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane around him – at some point in the game.

Divock Origi came off the bench against Bayern but perhaps Sturridge should be the man Klopp calls on in Liverpool’s hour of need. He often only needs half a yard to score and against United, that might be all they are afforded at times.
