Liverpool eye "serious movement" in January and could sign "best Bundesliga defender"

Liverpool supporters are likely to be buoyed by some fresh remarks regarding the club’s January transfer business, as FSG line up a move for one of Europe’s brightest defensive talents.

Liverpool's centre-back issues under the spotlight

The Reds have looked flawed this season, with record signings Florian Wirtrz and Alexander Isak still bedding in and Mohamed Salah among those out of form, and they also look light on centre-back options.

Granted, Virgil van Dijk largely looks as good as ever, barring a recent dip, but he is 34 years of age and will need replacing eventually, while Ibrahima Konate has flattered to deceive and is injury-prone.

Joe Gomez is another player who is known for his fitness woes in his career, while highly-rated new signing Giovanni Leoni will cruelly miss the rest of the season after suffering ACL damage in the EFL Cup clash with Southampton.

Not only that, but Marc Guehi is now being linked with a move to Bayern Munich, and Liverpool’s failure to sign the Crystal Palace captain on deadline day is increasingly looking like a bitter blow.

The January window will give the Reds a chance to bolster their defensive options, with Bayern Munich’s Dayo Upamecano linked with a move recently, and now another Bundesliga player has been backed to come in.

Liverpool could sign another "phenomenal" England international with Guehi

He is having an outstanding period in his career.

ByHenry Jackson Oct 25, 2025 Liverpool "serious" about strengthening in January

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness, who is well connected on Merseyside and now reports for Football Insider, claims Liverpool could look to sign Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck in January, with “serious movement” expected in the market.

“He’s proven to be the best defender so far this season in the Bundesliga. He looks to be a real talent and he’s the right age at 25. Look, there is no doubt Liverpool are working overtime right now trying to fix this defence. They’ve got to push the boat out in January.

“It doesn’t look as though it’s going to be Schlotterbeck now, but he could still be one of the targets, certainly. I do expect to see some serious movement in January from Liverpool, and they’re going to be spending where they probably hadn’t planned to because there’s some some cracks appearing. They’re going to have to get that defence shored up.”

Nico Schlotterbeck for Borussia Dortmund.

A new centre-back does feel like a pressing matter for Liverpool, given the aforementioned options there, both in terms of form and fitness.

It often feels like a matter of time before Konate misses a chunk of action, and should Van Dijk pick up an injury, it would have the potential to completely derail the Reds’ season.

Schlotterbeck stands out as an impressive option alongside Guehi, but it remains to be seen if Dortmund let him go, and the likes of Arne Slot and Richard Hughes have a big decision to make when it comes to whether to wail until the end of the season for the ideal signing or not.

USWNT star Trinity Rodman reportedly weighing lucrative European interest as Washington Spirit future remains unclear

United States forward Trinity Rodman’s future with the Washington Spirit is reportedly uncertain as she weighs more lucrative offers from overseas. Saturday’s NWSL semifinal win over the Portland Thorns at Audi Field may have been her final home appearance, with her contract set to expire next month and extension talks stalling.

ImagnContract negotiations stall

Rodman, 23, widely regarded as one of the NWSL’s brightest stars and most recognizable American players, has attracted significant interest from European clubs since the summer. She has openly expressed her ambition to play abroad, telling ESPN’s Futbol W earlier this year that she “always thought about playing overseas at some point in my career,” adding that “it’s just a matter of when.”

However, efforts to retain Rodman within the Spirit or the NWSL have hit a roadblock due to the league’s salary cap restrictions. The NWSL currently enforces a $3.5 million salary cap per team for a roster of up to 26 players, limiting the financial flexibility of clubs to compete for top talent like Rodman. ESPN reported that Rodman’s agent has engaged directly with NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman to explore potential solutions, but no resolution has been reached.

AdvertisementEuropean clubs offer financial advantages

ESPN reported Rodman has received several serious offers from clubs abroad, particularly in England, where teams are not bound by salary caps and can offer substantially higher salaries. This financial freedom abroad presents an attractive alternative for Rodman, who is entering a pivotal stage in her career and seeking both competitive growth and financial security.

The lure of playing in Europe’s top leagues, combined with the opportunity to compete in prestigious tournaments such as the UEFA Women’s Champions League, adds to the appeal of a move overseas.

NWSL faces challenges retaining top talent

Rodman’s situation underscores broader challenges facing the NWSL as it seeks to retain elite American players amid increasing competition from European leagues. The league’s salary cap, designed to promote competitive balance and financial sustainability, has inadvertently constrained its ability to match offers from wealthier foreign clubs.

Napoli ready to activate Hojlund clause and now want £87k-p-w Man Utd star

Rasmus Hojlund is thriving out on loan at Napoli currently and a new update claims that a permanent switch there from Manchester United is already close.

The £87,000-a-week Dane found it tough to shine in a Red Devils shirt after joining in a big-money move from Atalanta, proving to be one of many disappointing young signings at Old Trafford in recent years.

Last season, Hojlund only managed four goals in 32 appearances in the Premier League, not offering enough consistency leading the line, and it felt right for him to enjoy a new challenge.

The 22-year-old was shipped out on loan to Napoli during the summer transfer window, and he is enjoying a far more fruitful time of things in Germany, already netting twice in five Serie A outings, and also bagging a couple of goals in the Champions League.

It remains to be seen if Ruben Amorim sees a long-term future for Hojlund at United, but a new update suggests that a permanent exit is far more likley than him returning to Old Trafford.

Napoli close to permanent Hojlund move and now want Mainoo

According to a key claim from Caught Offside‘s Mark Brus, Napoli now want to trigger the buy clause in Hojlund’s Manchester United contract once this season comes to an end. Talks have been held and a deal looks set to be finalised ready for the summer.

“Napoli are confident. They’re in a strong position with the buy clause and they’re ready to activate it. Talks have been taking place and it should be finalised soon, ready to formally go through at the end of the season.”

It is also stated that Napoli want to sign Man Utd midfielder Kobbie Mainoo in the January transfer window, with the England international “likely to push for a move away” from the club.

There is a certain risk in United allowing Hojlund to leave, considering he is still young, but they now have Benjamin Sesko in their ranks, suggesting that they have moved on from the Denmark international.

With all due respect to Serie A, it is a weaker division than the Premier League, so he is naturally standing out more – Scott McTominay was arguably the best player in the whole league last season, which speaks volumes – and he has struggled with the pace of English football.

Hojlund may simply be one of many transfers that just hasn’t worked out for United, but that’s not to say he can’t still enjoy a strong career for club and country. He possesses plenty of attributes, from speed to power, but his finishing is inconsistent and the Red Devils need a far more prolific figure to lead the line.

Carragher said Man Utd star was "terrible", now he's Amorim's key player

Manchester United now have a talent who has managed to transform his career at Old Trafford.

ByEthan Lamb Oct 30, 2025

Granted, Sesko is still finding his feet and hasn’t exactly been perfect yet, but the likes of Amorim and Jason Wilcox seem to be confident in him being an upgrade on Hojlund, and they need to be trusted after this recent improved run of form.

As for Mainoo, on just £25,000-a-week, it would be a shame to see such a talented homegrown player leave, but if United’s manager doesn’t see him as an important part of his plans, a move away may be best for all concerned.

‘We have to be smart with him’ – Graham Potter delivers disappointing Alexander Isak fitness update as Sweden and Liverpool striker struggles after Newcastle exit

Sweden boss Graham Potter says star striker Alexander Isak is not ready to play two full games during the international break. The £125m man has been struggling for fitness since leaving Newcastle for Merseyside. Potter did confirm the Liverpool star will play some part in his side's World Cup qualifiers; Isak has been named on the bench to face Switzerland today.

  • Isak still struggling for fitness according to Potter

Isak's season has been blighted by persistent injuries. His last performance for his club came during Liverpool's 5-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in October. The Swede was replaced at halftime. He returned to Arne Slot's match day squad but was an unused substitute for the 3-0 defeat away to Manchester City last weekend. That stop-start opening to life on Merseyside could well be a result of Isak's protracted transfer saga. The player did not report to pre-season training with the Magpies, as he looked to push through a switch to the Premier League champions.

That lack of game time has left Potter unable to call upon his best attacking asset from the off in his first game in charge. The ex-Chelsea, Brighton and West Ham manager suggested Isak would feature in some guise in Sweden's World Cup qualifiers against Switzerland and Slovenia, and that he had a strong week of training within the national setup.

Potter: Isak had "a good week"

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Potter said: "He's had a good week, he's available. But we have to be smart with him because he's been out for a while. He's not ready to play two matches for 90 minutes. We have to wait and see until tomorrow."

  • Isak fitness and added worry in uphill task for Potter

Isak's ongoing fitness issues will be an unwelcome issue for Potter to overcome as he seeks to rectify Sweden's disastrous World Cup qualifying campaign. The 50-year-old has been parachuted into the job on a four month deal, that will be extended if he can secure a playoff spot.

Sweden have taken just one point from their four qualifiers so far, with former boss Jan Dhal Tomasson given his marching orders after his side lost twice to Kosovo and Switzerland without scoring a goal. While automatic qualification is impossible, they can still finish second if they beat both Switzerland and Slovenia, and other results go their way. As things stand, Sweden would also earn a spot in the playoffs thanks to winning their Nations League group.

Potter's willingness to take on this mammoth assignment comes from his affinity for the country where he made his name as a manager. He took Ostersunds from the fourth tier to the top flight, winning the Swedish Cup and qualifying for the Europa League Group stages. Following his appointment, Potter said: "I am very humble about the assignment, but also inspired.

"Sweden has fantastic players who deliver in the best leagues every week. My job will be to create the conditions so that we as a team deliver at the highest level to take Sweden to the World Cup next summer."

Can Potter propel Sweden to the World Cup?

The first hurdle in Potter's way is Group B leaders Switzerland, who have taken 10 points from their games in Group B. They can secure automatic qualification for next summer's World Cup if they beat Sweden, and Kosovo fail to beat Slovenia. If the chips fall their way, Sweden could complete a miraculous comeback should they beat Slovenia on Wednesday.

Potter will also be without Viktor Gyokeres for both matchups, as the Arsenal striker is currently nursing a hamstring injury. He is also without Spurs playmaker Dejan Kulusevski, who is still months away from returning to action as he rehabilitates a knee injury.

For a side that has failed to score through their catastrophic campaign, being without either of their star marksmen or their premiere attacking midfielder could make Potter's gamble appear to be folly before it even really starts. That said, if he can turn this ship around, it will be a feather in the cap for a manager that has seen his stock fall precipitously after two failed reigns at Chelsea and West Ham.

Brilliant Bopara century powers Northants to Finals Day

Northamptonshire 154 for 4 (Bopara 105*, Clark 3-13) beat Surrey 147 for 6 (S Curran 69*, Scrimshaw 3-34) by 7 runs Former England all-rounder Ravi Bopara produced an explosive knock of 105 not out from 46 balls to stun Surrey and propel Northamptonshire Steelbacks to their first Vitality Blast Finals Day since 2016.The 40-year-old, a former Blast winner with Essex, turned back the clock with a magnificent display – posting his first Northamptonshire hundred as they fought back after losing two early wickets to post 154 for four in a rain-reduced contest at the Kia Oval.Surrey captain Sam Curran made a valiant attempt to rescue his side with a first half-century of the tournament, an undefeated 69 from 38 – but they came up short on 147 for six.Experienced seam pair Ben Sanderson (two for 24) and David Willey (one for 28) kept their cool in the death overs to clinch the Steelbacks’ success. An early evening downpour trimmed the contest to 14 overs per side and, having won a crucial toss, the Surrey skipper had no hesitation in opting to bowl when play finally began at 7.50pm.That choice was quickly vindicated by Jordan Clark (three for 13), who made the ball swing and removed both Steelbacks openers for ducks in a devastating first over before a flurry of boundaries by Tim Robinson got the scoreboard moving. The New Zealander clubbed 20 from 12, mostly from Tom Curran’s opening over, but tried to pull Chris Jordan’s first ball and perished to a top edge – passing the baton on to Bopara, who seized it eagerly.Runs flowed through the veteran’s combination of power, timing and precision, with Gus Atkinson’s single over disappearing for 18 before Bopara clipped Clark to the fence to post his half-century.Supported by Saif Zaib (17 not out from 12), Bopara hit the accelerator and dominated their unbroken partnership of 74 from 35, hooking Tom Lawes for four from the penultimate ball of the innings to bring up a remarkable 45-ball ton.Like the visitors, Surrey were two down early on as Ryan Patel swung his first ball into the hands of deep square leg and Lewis McManus, standing up to Sanderson, took a thin edge to dismiss Jason Roy.Ollie Pope (41 from 23) went on the offensive, cutting Willey for two fours and driving his namesake, leg-spinner Lloyd, for a straight maximum as he and Sam Curran accumulated steadily and kept the required rate within range. The pair added 74 from 38 before Pope top-edged a short delivery from George Scrimshaw (three for 34) to long leg and, when Dan Lawrence holed out two balls later, the home side still needed another 70 from 32.Curran kept them in contention, slamming Justin Broad over the cover fence and Laurie Evans banged successive fours off Scrimshaw before miscuing the next one to point.Sanderson returned to send down an over that cost him just five before Willey’s spate of yorkers left Surrey needing 19 – and, although Curran smote a Sanderson full toss for six – it was not enough.

Sean Dyche fuming at Bruno Fernandes moment in Man Utd draw at Nottingham Forest

Amad Diallo’s delightful volley continued Manchester United’s unbeaten run and extended Sean Dyche’s wait for his first Premier League win as Nottingham Forest manager.

United arrived on a run of three straight wins and Diallo’s late volley rescued a 2-2 draw, which was probably a fair result at the end of a helter-skelter encounter that the Red Devils went ahead in, albeit under controversial circumstances.

The City Ground faithful were left furioius at the decision to award the corner from which Casemiro headed home the opening goal, and Dyche also highlighted Bruno Fernandes’ placement of the ball outside the quadrant, speaking to Sky Sports.

“It’s not inconclusive, I’ve seen it back,” the 54 year-old said afer Nicolo Savona was adjudged to have taken the ball out of play.

He continued: “Funny enough I was talking to the powers at be, the referees, about the quadrant. We all watch it, you can see the ball is outside the quadrant from 80 yards away, but they allow it because it’s one millimetre with the ball hanging over the line, a bit like the goal line technology.

“So apparently today the assistant referee can see 70, 80 yards away, it’s got to change.”

Dyche’s men returned after half-time interval with the bit between their teeth and levelled three minutes after the restart. Substitute Yates clipped over a cross from the right and Gibbs-White held off Diallo to get away a header that crept inside the far post.

It looked like Savona would have the last laugh too, coolly scoring in the 50th minute. Another cross from the right took a deflection and looped up, with the ball bundled on as Jesus challenged with United players. The Italian was the beneficiary, taking a touch and finishing from six yards.

United tried to level and Fernandes came closest, seeing a hopeful long-range strike skip off the turf and hit the far post. Casemiro just failed to turn home the rebound.

Manchester United have found their next Amad

Jesus headed into the side-netting and Hudson-Odoi went close as Forest pushed to settle things, only for Diallo’s moment of magic to draw United level in the 81st minute.

Forest failed to effectively clear a corner and the Ivory Coast international unleashed a wonderful left-footed volley from the edge of the box that flew past Sels, sparking bedlam in the away end.

The goal was given after a VAR check and United pushed hardest for a winner, with Murillo stopping Diallo snatching victory in stoppage time.
