There it is. A special hundred. A fifth in T20Is. That’s massive. Makes room again, Omarzai tries to slip one wide, but Rohit gets under it and clears the man at point. Rohit feels India were not 'brave enough' in Hyderabad chase

Rohit Sharma feels India were not “brave enough” in their second innings and they “overall failed as a team” as they went down by 28 runs in Hyderabad.”When you are put against a wall, you need to show character and you need to be brave enough, which I thought we weren’t,” Rohit said on the official broadcast after India went 1-0 down in the five-Test series. “We wanted to take some chances… we didn’t take chances with the bat. But that can happen.”With India taking a massive 190-run first-innings lead, the idea that England would finish on the winning side was more than a bit far-fetched. However, Ollie Pope produced an epic 196 off 278 balls to take England to 420 in their second dig and gave them a 230-run lead, which proved just enough.Related

Rohit said that Pope’s knock was “probably the best” he had seen in Indian conditions by an overseas batter, but felt that the target was by no means ungettable on a surface not doing too much.”You got to take your hat off and say ‘well played’ to Ollie Pope. That was some serious knock,” Rohit said. “Having gotten the lead of 190, we thought we were very much in the game, but then… exceptional batting, probably the best that I have seen in Indian conditions by an overseas batter.”Ollie Pope played a brilliant knock. I definitely thought 230 was gettable, there wasn’t too much in the pitch, but we didn’t bat well enough to get to the score.”This is only the third time overall – and the first time at home – that India have lost a Test match after securing a first-innings lead in excess of 100 runs. Was India’s bowling to blame for the loss in Hyderabad then?”I went and checked where we bowled [after the third day], and I thought we bowled in the right areas,” Rohit said. “When you finish the day, you analyse: what went well, what didn’t go well, and things like that. We went back and saw things; we spoke about [them] and I thought the bowlers executed the plan really well.”Hard to look at one or two things. Overall we failed as a team. I thought after the first innings of their batting and our batting I thought we were very much in the game. We didn’t bat well enough to get to that score [in the second innings].”Rohit also had praise for India’s lower-order batters, who hung around to give them hope late on the fourth day. India were at 119 for 7 in the 41st over and a swift end was on the horizon. But KS Bharat and R Ashwin strung a 57-run stand off 130 balls for the eighth wicket. Even Jasprit Bumrah and No. 11 Mohammed Siraj hung around for 37 balls, adding 25 runs, but could not take the game into the final day with Siraj falling in the last over of an extended day to give Tom Hartley his seventh wicket of the innings and spark celebrations in the England camp.”I wanted them to take the game to the fifth day; 20-30 runs anything is possible,” Rohit said. “The lower order fought really well, and showed the top order that you need to fight it out. It is the first game of the series. I hope the guys can learn from that.”

La Liga under pressure to reschedule Real Madrid's opening La Liga game as players' union appeal to judge

Real Madrid and Spain’s players' union want the season opener postponed as concerns mount over inadequate rest following the Club World Cup campaign.

  • Real Madrid and AFE request season opener delay
  • La Liga resists, citing compliance with existing vacation agreements
  • Sole Competition Judge to make final decision

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

According to , La Liga is under renewed pressure to postpone Madrid’s 2025-26 season opener against Osasuna after the AFE (Spanish Footballers' Association) and the club formally appealed to the Sole Competition Judge. Both parties argue that Madrid players are at risk due to insufficient rest and preparation time following their participation in the final phase of the Club World Cup. La Liga, however, opposes the delay, claiming that all legal vacation requirements have been met.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Madrid’s players will only receive the minimum three-week vacation period outlined in their collective agreement, without the standard three-week preseason. The AFE contends this violates Spain’s Workers' Statute and Sports Law regarding occupational safety. While La Liga maintains that no formal commitment was made to delay the match, both AFE and Real Madrid cite a lack of flexibility that could jeopardise player health after a star player cuts their holiday short. Osasuna, meanwhile, has shown no objection to a rescheduling.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

AFE first raised this issue with La Liga in March 2025 and reiterated on May 16 that they would not sign the agreement unless there was a provision for preseason rest. The union argues that without at least three weeks of preseason, players are at risk of injury.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MADRID?

The decision now lies with the Sole Competition Judge, who will rule on whether the opening matchday should be postponed to allow Madrid’s squad more rest. If the appeal is upheld, La Liga may be forced to adjust its calendar before the 2025-26 campaign begins.

Desai triggers dramatic Karnataka collapse to lead Gujarat to narrow win

Desai, the left-arm spinner, picked up seven wickets as Karnataka went from 50 for 0 to 103 all out

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Jan-2024

Siddharth Desai’s seven-wicket haul took Gujarat to victory•Siddharth Desai

Left-arm spinner Siddharth Desai helped Gujarat snatch six points from Karnataka in a thrilling morning in Ahmedabad, where his seven-for scripted a stunning six-wicket win by defending 109 in the fourth innings. Karnataka were cruising at 50 for 0 in under 10 overs before Desai took six wickets in a row that turned the game around.Karnataka soon slipped to 62 for 4, 77 for 7 and were bowled out for 103.On a pitch where the ball turned and bounced viciously, Desai troubled Karnataka by going around the wicket – wide of crease at times – and added to the pressure with close-in fielders. Karnataka started the final innings strongly, with Mayank Agarwal, the only centurion of the match, and Devdutt Padikkal scoring quickly. Desai had opened the bowling alongside medium-pacer Chintan Gaja, but the task looked beyond them as Agarwal and Padikkal raced away. Agarwal scored 19 in 29 balls, with four fours, and Padikkal was in a hurry, hitting 31 from 29 balls with four fours and a six.But Desai broke through with Agarwal’s wicket in the tenth over, and then got rid of Padikkal and Nikin Jose in his next over. Suddenly, Karnataka were 56 for 3. Time wasn’t the issue, and with the likes of Manish Pandey, R Samarth – who had opened in the first innings – and Shubhang Hegde to come, it wasn’t a worrying situation yet.

Desai was on a roll, though. Pandey fell for a duck to become Desai’s fourth victim, and he added Sujay Sateri and Vijaykumar Vyshak to his tally by the 18th over of the innings, leaving Karnataka tottering at 74 for 6.Gujarat captain Gaja had removed himself from the attack after bowling just two overs, bringing Rinkesh Vaghela, the offspinner, who got into the act by sending back Samarth and Hegde, who had scored 27 in 37 balls. Desai then got rid of Rohit Kumar – the third duck in the innings – to complete his haul, before Vaghela got his third, Prasidh Krishna, in the 27th over to finish off the game. The day had started well for Karnataka, as had most of the match till they got to 50 for no loss in their second innings. Gujarat, overnight on 171 for 7 – after having conceded a 110-run first-innings lead – were bowled out in 12.2 overs of action, adding 48 runs along the way. Those were critical in the end analysis. The win lifted Gujarat to the top of the Elite Group C table, with two wins in two games giving them 12 points.

Raising cash for Isak? Liverpool set to bring in more transfer funds as Reds agree £15m fee with Lyon for young midfielder Tyler Morton

Reported by Fabrizio Romano on X, negotiations are at their "final stages" between the Reds and Lyon over a transfer for 22-year-old Morton, who is set to move to Ligue 1 for £15m after making just 14 senior appearances for Liverpool.

The sale of academy product Morton will represent pure profit for Liverpool, who continue to act smartly in raising money for further exploits in the transfer market. A record-breaking move for Alexander Isak remains a possibility, although there have been suggestions the Reds may walk away from negotiations after Newcastle United rejected their opening £120m ($158m) bid.

DID YOU KNOW?

Merseyside local Morton joined Liverpool aged seven and made his competitive debut for the club in September 2021. He has since enjoyed loan spells with Blackburn Rovers and Hull City before being reintegrated into the Reds' first-team squad last campaign. Morton made just five appearances in all competitions last season and none in the Premier League in his "toughest season mentally", but was an impactful member of Lee Carsley's victorious Under-21 Euros squad and assisted the winning goal in the final.

Liverpool may look to follow up the sale of Morton with further exits for players like Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott. The saga surrounding Isak may continue for the remainder of the summer.

How Man Utd can afford blockbuster transfer for a new striker WITHOUT needing to sell members of their 'bomb squad' – explained

Manchester United have committed to £133.5 million worth of new signings but appear to be successfully navigating what had previously been thought to be PSR limitations.

  • Man Utd pursuing Sesko deal
  • Previous PSR concerns allayed
  • Transfer not dependent on sales
Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

A proposed deal for £70m ($93m)-rated RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko has been thought to be moving forward, although Newcastle have not given up amid claims in his native Slovenia that he will choose the Magpies. After bringing in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo for big money earlier in the summer, it was expected that further United signings would hinge on offloading Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia to create room under Premier League PSR. But that may not actually be the case, which is helpful given a lack of progress.

  • Getty

    THE EXPLANATION

According to the , there are a few things that play into the club's hands. Rashford is the only member of the so-called 'bomb squad' to leave, only on loan. But Barcelona are covering all of his burdensome salary, immediately taking £14m ($19m) off the books for this season. With Rashford and Antony similarly out on loan in the second half of last season, money was also saved then. United had a quiet January when Patrick Dorgu's £25m ($33m) arrival was the only incoming transfer and the hugely expensive 2022 signings of Casemiro and Antony were long enough ago that they aren't part of the new three-year PSR cycle. Payments for Cunha and Mbeumo are going to be spread over multiple years, and even the brutal mass redundancies among non-football staff are said to have helped raise the PSR ceiling because of the saving.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The report adds that United still intend to sell the remaining four 'bomb squad' players and expect movement closer to the transfer deadline on September 1. Chelsea remain linked with Garnacho, while Borussia Dortmund have emerged as a Sancho suitor after Juventus' interest was paused. Overall, the club still feel they must sell some senior players for the sake of the finances by next summer.

    WHAT NEXT?

If United can push ahead with a Sesko approach and beat Newcastle to the punch, Ruben Amoorim could have a very different forward line this season, with Cunha and Mbeumo predicted to operate as split No.10s behind a central striker. Club officials have just shy of two weeks to complete a deal if they want Sesko to be involved from day one of the Premier League campaign.
