    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Augusto initially joined Inter on loan from Monza but joined the club permanently in 2024. Because of the club's managerial change, in which Simone Inzaghi was replaced by Christian Chivu, the 26-year-old could become available. He is capable of playing as a left wing-back, a left midfielder, and as a centre-back, and would cost around €30 million (£25.5m/$35m) this summer.

Arsenal have already agreed deals to sign Kepa from Chelsea, as well as Christian Norgaard from Brentford and Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad. The club are also reported to be scouting a striker, as they chase Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres. Adding Augusto too would be a real coup as the club aim to finally make the step from runners-up to Premier League champions.

Augusto is playing for Inter at the Club World Cup, making three appearances thus far. He also made 29 league appearances, scoring three goals, as Inter finished runners-up in Serie A; he also played 37 times the season prior as they were crowned champions. Gunners scouts will next be able to watch him against Brazilian side Fluminense in the Round of 16 on Monday.

Sam Hain 'made peace' with idea England chance might never come

Hain marked international debut with 89 off 82 after prolific domestic form finally rewarded

Every generation has a cricketer that is the best of the bunch to never play for England. A decade ago it was James Hildreth, now it’s Sam Northeast, but tomorrow it will never be Sam Hain.Having “made peace” with the idea that his chance for England may never come, Hain, 28, scored a fluent 89 off 82 balls on ODI, making a strong impression as he looks to force his way into the international set-up Dawid Malan style. Safe in the knowledge that he’s not starting as first-choice, but aware that as long as the runs flow, so too will the opportunities.”I know how good English cricket is,” said Hain, who moved to the UK from Australia at 16 to sign for Warwickshire.”The depth is unbelievable. I actually made peace that I might never, ever get the chance but that doesn’t mean I lacked ambition. When I was younger, I probably searched for playing for England too much. And it took me away from the real process of things and the journey that I’ve been on over the last 10 years. I’m just happy to get a chance.Related

Twos to the fore for England, as Scrimshaw's struggles inject the intensity

Jacks, Hain, Rehan star for England as Scrimshaw comes through a dicey debut

“The last few years I guess I’ve tried to find a reason why I play [and] it’s because I really love it. It’s why I started, so I just find that over the years it’s just helped me ride the highs and lows a little easier.”The much touted statistic that follows Hain around is his record-breaking List A average that sits at 58.56. According to the spreadsheets, this man is the best in the country at this. And yet England never gave him a go until now.Simply put, this was because cricket’s old adage that it’s “not how, but how many” when it comes to run-scoring is obsolete. A statement of received wisdom that, in terms of accuracy, sits somewhere alongside the earth being flat and your mum thinking you’ll drown immediately if you get into a swimming pool less than half-an-hour after eating a biscuit. It’s a falsehood that Hain knows all too well, with the quantity of runs coming from his bat across his career never being the issue, but instead the quality of them. He went undrafted in the first two Hundred drafts despite his reputation as a borderline white-ball phenom, and it was because of a pedestrian T20 strike rate that sat at 126 until the end of 2020. In his own words, the omission was a “kick up the backside” and spurred the change in approach that was the first brick in the wall towards an England debut.”That forced my hand a little bit,” Hain said, reflecting on his change in approach when at the crease. “To actually delve into my game more so than ever.”Hain has always had a 360 game, he just used to be more circumspect in its adoption. Now, and more to the point, for a number of years, those shackles have gone. Nevertheless, it is somewhat of an oddity that Hain, as the Patron Saint of the Forgotten Format, earnt his ODI debut on the back of his change in T20 form. The days of the List A to ODI pipeline existing in England are long gone. Hain, even with – or more accurately, because – of his remarkable run-scoring in List A cricket has seen opportunities in the format dry-up.”We don’t actually play a lot of 50-over cricket if you’re involved in the Hundred,” said Hain, who has played just five List A matches in the last four years. “And you actually forget how much time there is to bat.”Thankfully for Hain, he remembered in time to turn what had been a nervy, stuttering start of just one run from his first 11 deliveries, into a fluent innings that carried England to 300 and beyond. While on 1, Hain slashed a ball that flew through the hands of a diving backward point for two runs, and the next ball he skipped down the wicket and launched the ball for four over mid-on. On such fine margins, international careers are born.”I tried to keep my emotion in check as much as possible,” said Hain, who had the added bonus of his Australia-based dad, Bryan, being in the crowd thanks to him coincidentally being in Europe for the rugby World Cup.”Anyone who says they’re not nervous on a day like this would be lying,” Hain added. “There’s nerves there and that’s because I really care. I really I’ve waited a long time for an opportunity and I am grateful for it.”I wanted to do really well not only for my family, but for all the people that have supported me over the years. I was waking up around 12, two and four [in the morning]…probably the worst I’ve been. I moved over here at 16 and your international debut is something you want to try to make as memorable as possible, but I was at peace whether I scored runs or not. I just really wanted to take in the day for what it was.”

Kerr's calm century sees New Zealand through in tense chase

New Zealand 210 for 4 (Kerr 100*, Halliday 37*, Malta 2-41) beat South Africa 209 (Kapp 72, Devine 3-33, Tahuhu 3-43, Kerr 2-43) by six wickets (DLS method)A calm and composed Amelia Kerr took New Zealand over the line with an unbeaten century after they were set a target of 210 in 45 overs, in Durban, on what their captain Sophie Devine called a “tricky surface”. It was a consolation win for New Zealand as hosts South Africa had already won the series by claiming the first two ODIs. But two points took New Zealand to the top half of the Women’s Championship table, where they are now fifth and South Africa second, behind India.Even though South Africa lost a fired-up Marizanne Kapp after she had bowled just three overs in the chase – her heart rate spiked up and she left the field as a precaution. CSA had later said she was “doing well and resting in the changeroom” – they will also rue the fielding lapses, dropped catches and missed run-out chances that might have changed the result. New Zealand’s batters, led by Kerr’s fourth ODI century, cashed in on the slip-ups and got home with ten balls to spare. After opting to bowl, New Zealand had the hosts in a spot of bother when their quick bowlers Hannah Rowe, Lea Tahuhu and Devine combined to reduce South Africa to 43 for 3 in the 12th over. When it looked like in-form captain Laura Wolvaardt and Kapp were going to keep them steady, Devine sent Wolvaardt back for a 54-ball 24 with a drag-on while playing her trademark drive. From there, Kapp not only salvaged the innings but pushed along at a brisk pace even though wickets fell around her.She was mainly assisted by Chloe Tryon, playing her 100th ODI, in a fifth-wicket stand of 58 and then by Sinola Jafta for a partnership of 41 for the seventh wicket. Once Jafta was caught behind off Tahuhu, Kapp also edged behind, for 72 off 73 off Kerr, with the score on 188. South Africa were soon bowled out for 209 in 44.3 overs.Morning showers had turned this into a 48-over game at the start, a further interruption in the middle reduced it to 45 overs a side and since the hosts were all out, New Zealand had to chase 210 and not a revised target.South Africa started their defence in strong fashion when Suzie Bates, playing her 300th international game, was caught at midwicket by a diving Tazmin Brits off Masabata Klaas for 9. The ease with which Kerr and Devine then put on 64 for the second wicket, taking them past 100 in the process, made it look like the visitors would stroll to the target. But Nonkululeko Mlaba’s double-strike and Maddy Green’s duck added a twist. Devine and Green were both victims of misfortune: the New Zealand captain tried to push a seemingly innocuous ball to the covers, but it kept low and rolled onto her stumps. In the next over, Green danced down the track and went for a drive, she missed it as did Jafta but the ball bounced off the wicketkeeper’s gloves and hit the stumps. Georgia Plimmer’s cut, away from the body, offered a simple catch to point off Mlaba. It had New Zealand tightly placed 127 for 4, having lost 3 for 21 in the previous 49 balls. The wickets added to a boundary drought that lasted over 12 overs, but Brooke Halliday broke the shackles in the 31st over. The fifth-wicket stand saw off a tense phase with Kerr surviving a close lbw shout, off Tryon, and Halliday’s chip down the ground falling just short of mid-off in the same over. Halliday soon survived a run-out chance as well, thanks to a full-length dive. She got another life when Klaas put down a sitter at midwicket in the 41st over. By now, Kerr had reached a solid 87 with the help of 11 fours, most of them coming behind square and through the covers, and she, with Halliday, had ensured the asking rate never crossed six an over for most of their partnership. And when it did, Halliday smacked Klaas for three fours in an over before Kerr got to 99 with a four next over and tapped the ball towards point to pinch the single that completed her match-winning century along with the game.

–Fixtures | Squads | Points table | Tournament IndexTop Story: Fabulous Fakhar pulls off stunning chase to keep Pakistan aliveAgainst all odds, Pakistan somehow remain alive in this World Cup. In a game where they turned in one of their most ordinary bowling displays in World Cup history, a century from Rachin Ravindra and 95 from the returning Kane Williamson saw New Zealand amass 401 – their highest World Cup total – to leave Pakistan on the ropes. But an astonishing counterattack from Fakhar Zaman saw him smash an unbeaten 126 in 81 balls to keep Pakistan up with the DLS asking rate with the threat of rain looming for much of the second innings. And when the rain did arrive, Pakistan were comfortably ahead of the rate they needed to be, pulling off a win that levels them on points with New Zealand and puts a semi-final berth within realistic grasp.Click here for the full reportMatch analysis: The sweet sound of Fakhar’s sixes makes unreal realFakhar Zaman tonned up in the 20th over•ICC/Getty ImagesFind yourself the clip first. Match Report: Defending champions England knocked out as Australia march towards semi-finalsIt’s over. And that’s not simply the worst World Cup defence in the history of international sport.Everything that, for eight heady years, had been taken for granted about England’s white-ball batting has vanished without trace, as if some Hollywood baddy had pinched a sports almanac(k) from the future and set the dials on the team’s Delorean for the 2015 World Cup. We’ve re-entered an epoch of endless, desperate failure – the miracle of 2019 lost forever to some branch-line of the space-time continuum.England’s sixth defeat – by 33 runs in Ahmedabad – in seven games was in turn Australia’s fifth win in five, with which they have marched clear of a hard-chasing pack to tighten their grip on a semi-final berth. It was marginally less supine than some of England’s losses – thanks to another spirited bowling display led by Adil Rashid and Chris Woakes, who also rallied gamely at the death with the bat, and another compelling but all-too-brief sighting of Ben Stokes in #HeroMode.Click here for the full reportMatch analysis: Straighter, faster, flatter, Zampa2:02

Why has Zampa been such a threat?

It was Jos Buttler who finally tried to hit him off his length, skipping down and looking to launch him over long-off, as if trying to rekindle the spirit of that heady night in Dubai. Instead, it was Adam Zampa who came out on top, roaring as loud as he could in celebration as Cameron Green took a simple catch. He was so consistent with his stock ball that any deviation from it seemed to bring a wicket. The ball that got Ben Stokes might have been his worst of the night, sliding down the leg side and swept tamely to short fine leg; he tossed one up full to Moeen Ali, who slog-swept him out to deep midwicket. He finished with extraordinary figures of 3 for 21, the cheapest spell of his ODI career by a distance. Rohit Sharma and Temba Bavuma will have that question in their minds as India take on South Africa in a top-of-the-table clash at Eden Gardens on Sunday.South Africa love to bat first. Their top order invariably sets the platform for the middle to go big. Batting first in this World Cup, their totals have been 428, 311, 399, 382 and 357. On each occasion, they won by more than 100 runs. While chasing, though, they lost to Netherlands and narrowly escaped, with a one-wicket win, against Pakistan. For India, it’s the opposite. Leao will not be leaving Milan this summer, despite strong interest from Bayern Munich and Barcelona. During his unveiling as Milan’s new head coach, Allegri confirmed that the Portuguese winger remains a core part of his plans. Leao, who has three years left on his contract, has been the subject of repeated transfer speculation, but the club are standing firm.

“Rafa can do excellent things next season,” said Allegri when asked about Leao during a press conference. “I’m sure I can bring out that extra something he’s been missing. I’m glad he’s stayed, he’s now more responsible, more mature, and has all the qualities to become one of the best.

"I hope to help him perform even better. He is approaching the age of maturity, so I think he is more responsible as a boy. I met him, I spoke to him and I think there are the conditions to do well."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Barca have shown long-standing interest in Leao, especially after being rejected by Nico Williams for the second straight summer. But despite a strong relationship with Leao’s agent Jorge Mendes, Barca will now have to look elsewhere for a left winger, with Luis Díaz and Marcus Rashford being considered instead. Meanwhile, Bayern were keenly interested in the left winger, but he refuted the rumours recently.

Hayden calls for Green to open, Labuschagne to be left out

The former opener accepts the change is unlikely, but does not think having Smith and Labuschagne together works

Andrew McGlashan20-Oct-20235:06

Should Australia change their batting order to be more effective?

Matthew Hayden believes that Australia need to make a change at the top of the order and give Cameron Green a license to play with freedom as opener in place of Marnus Labuschagne who is currently at No. 4.Leading into the ODI World Cup it appeared Australia had moved on from pairing Labuschagne and Steven Smith together in the middle order, but when Labuschagne returned amid various injuries with some stunning innings in South Africa, followed by Travis Head’s broken hand, he found himself at the tournament and in the XI.So far, albeit from a small sample of three innings, Labuschagne has Australia’s best average of 37.66 but is striking at just 64.57, which is in contrast to the form he brought into the competition when in eight matches against South Africa and India he had averaged 60.14 with a strike rate of 97.67, leading to praise from coach Andrew McDonald and national selector George Bailey for the increased tempo in his game.Related

Going short in the middle overs: for Cummins, it's a risk worth taking

“I don’t think it does,” Hayden told ESPNcricinfo when asked if pairing Smith and Labuschagne together works. “I don’t think they’ll change things either. To me, they have got a front anchor out and a back anchor out and the innings goes nowhere because they are both well and truly stable.”It’s fine to have one stabiliser, I think it’s really important to have a mind like Steve Smith at the top of the order when you start to set totals or chase totals, you need that computer mind, but when you have two of them in a row I think it creates pressure through the top six so I’d make a change there.”Green was dropped following the opening game against India amid a period where he has struggled to find form with the bat, but Hayden argued that opening could free the shackles with Mitchell Marsh moving to No. 3 followed by Smith at four. Smith has always said No. 3, where he averages 52.60 in ODIs, is his preferred spot.Cameron Green has struggled for form since the IPL•Getty Images

“Give him a licence, Cam Green at the top,” he said. “To me, he’s a kid who hasn’t necessarily found his tempo in any format of the game but what we saw here during the IPL is that Mumbai Indians just sent him out and said, kid, just smash it.”He’s got huge levers, got great scoring abilities. Not so good when it comes to playing spin through the middle but by that stage if he’s smashed Pakistan for 70 or 80, he’s done his job.”Mitch [Marsh] won’t like to come down to three because he’s had great success in his ODI career opening but soon enough you are going to get [Travis] Head back in there so ultimately Mitch is going to bat three, so make the change, create the initiative, do something different rather than sit and wait.”In a subsequent conversation on ESPNcricinfo’s Match Day show between Hayden and India batter Cheteshwar Pujara, there was the suggestion that with the reality being that Labuschagne would be retained, he needed to be urged to play with more aggression.”I still feel he has the ability to stabilise the innings,” Pujara said. “We saw in the last game [against Sri Lanka], when Steve Smith got out he was the one who could anchor the innings. I would say, rather have a word with Marnus and if you feel like he needs to be a bit more positive then I think he has the experience of playing in Indian conditions and that’s why I’d still prefer him ahead of Cameron Green.”Hayden added: “If you are going to pick Labuschagne, [say] you have a certain number of balls and our expectation is that you go for it, play a bit more proactively. It’s not like anyone is doubting Labuschagne and the way he goes about his cricket, he’s a terrific cricketer, no doubt about it, but it’s a World Cup and you need to win key moments and for me, he’s hoping he’s getting runs rather than proactively getting them.”Australia are expected to go with an unchanged XI against Pakistan in Bengaluru and Travis Head is due to join the squad over the weekend as he continues to recover from the broken hand sustained in South Africa.
