GVB sold "explosive" Rangers star, now he's worth more than Dessers & Cerny

Glasgow Rangers opted to remove Philippe Clement from his post in the Ibrox dugout earlier this year and Barry Ferguson came in to replace him as the interim boss until the end of the season.

The Light Blues, if you include penalty shootout wins, have won four of their five matches under the Scottish boss, who secured a dramatic victory against Celtic last time out in the Scottish Premiership.

Several players have caught the eye and made the most of the change in management in recent weeks, including Cyriel Dessers and Vaclav Cerny.

The Rangers players who have impressed under Barry Ferguson

The Wolfsburg loanee has been a star throughout the campaign, with 11 goals in the league, but he has scored three goals in five matches under Ferguson so far.

Vaclav Cerny

Cerny, who is currently valued at £7.5m by Transfermarkt, has provided a consistent threat in front of goal and his return to the Bundesliga in the summer will be a big blow for the Gers because of his goalscoring exploits.

Dessers, meanwhile, had scored one goal in six games at the end of Clement’s reign. Since Ferguson came in, the Nigerian forward has scored four goals and provided one assist in five matches, which shows that the new boss has helped him to rediscover his best form.

The experienced number nine is valued at £3.3m by Transfermarkt, which means that the two players are worth £10.8m combined, which is less than one former Gers star is currently worth.

The former Rangers star who is worth more than Cerny and Dessers

Whilst Giovanni van Bronckhorst was in charge at Ibrox, Rangers cashed in on versatile defender Calvin Bassey for a reported fee of £19.6m – selling him to Ajax in 2022.

The left-footed titan, who was once described as “explosive” by former coach Steve Beaglehole, made 65 first-team appearances for the Gers.

Calvin Bassey

After just one season in the Netherlands, Ajax moved on from the Nigeria international and sold him to Fulham for £19.3m, making a small loss on the centre-back, and his value on Transfermarkt at the time was just £12.5m.

As you can see in the table above, Bassey has been a regular starter in the Premier League for the Cottagers since the start of the 2023/24 campaign, whilst dominating opposition players in physical duels.

His form on the pitch for Fulham in the English top-flight has caused his market value to soar to an eye-catching £20.9m, as per Transfermarkt, which is a significant increase from the £12.5m it was at in 2013 and is more than the fees Ajax and Fulham paid for his services.

Market Movers

Football FanCast’s Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club’s star player or biggest flop worth today?

This means that his value has, although it has taken several years to happen, increased since Rangers decided to cash in on him after they made it to the Europa League final in 2022.

The Light Blues now look back and wonder if they did enough to extract as much value out of his sale as possible, as he is now worth almost twice as much as two of their current top-performing players – Cerny and Dessers.

£6m+ per year Amorim regular is unsettled at Man Utd and is set to be sold

A Manchester United regular under Ruben Amorim is unsettled at Old Trafford and is set to be sold by INEOS.

Man Utd regret signing player who could now leave

It looks set to be a busy summer in the transfer window ahead of Amorim’s first full season in charge, with the manager, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co ready to move on 10 Man Utd players this summer.

Talking earlier this month, Ratcliffe didn’t hold back on some signings in the past who the Red Devils are still paying for today.

“If you look at the players we are buying this summer, that we didn’t buy, we’re buying Antony, we’re buying Casemiro, we’re buying Onana, we’re buying Hojlund, we’re buying Sancho. These are all things from the past, whether we like it or not, we’ve inherited those things and have to sort that out.”

Manchester United have joined their arch-rivals in the race to sign a wanted figure.

One of those who Ratcliffe named, goalkeeper Andre Onana, has been heavily linked with an exit in recent weeks. In fact, there have been claims in 2025 that Man Utd regret signing Onana, who is on £120,000 per week, which works out at more than £6m per year.

He has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia with Man Utd set to sell the shot-stopper, and now, another update has emerged on Onana and Amorim’s thoughts on an exit.

Andre Onana unsettled at Man Utd and set to be sold

According to talkSPORT, Onana is ‘unsettled’ at Man Utd and has been for some time. Therefore, he is open to a move away from Old Trafford and the club are willing to let him go.

The report adds that the Man Utd boss ‘is not against selling Onana to bring in his own man between the sticks’ and there is serious interest in the Cameroon international from the Saudi Pro League.

The 28-year-old has been a regular under Amorim, starting every Premier League fixture this season, however, he has come in for criticism in the media for a number of errors he has made.

Former Man Utd forward Louis Saha didn’t hold back earlier this season when talking about Onana, saying: “If you don’t have a confident goalkeeper he has to be challenged. Those performances are unacceptable, it’s not normal!

“There is a need for every player at Manchester United – apart from Bruno Fernandes – to feel threatened with competition. No one has shown that they deserve anything in the next game. The manager can challenge and criticise them because it’s not good enough.

“Unless you can guarantee that you’re not going to make mistakes, you should not be considered as a guaranteed starter in any position. None of those players should be guaranteed anything.”

Now, it looks as if his days are numbered in Manchester, and it seems as if all parties involved are happy to part ways.

Yorkshire fined £400,000, handed points deductions following racism charges

Yorkshire have been fined a total of £400,000, and handed points deductions in both this year’s County Championship and Vitality Blast competitions, following the announcement of long-awaited sanctions from the Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC).The punishments relate to Yorkshire’s handling of Azeem Rafiq’s revelations of institutional racism at the club, for which they admitted to four amended charges at the original CDC hearing in February. In those, they accepted that their conduct between 2004 and 2021 had been prejudicial to the interests of cricket and had brought the game of cricket into disrepute. On Friday, the CDC panel – comprising Tim O’Gorman (chair), Professor Seema Patel and Mark Milliken-Smith KC – issued the club with an official reprimand, in addition to a £400,000 fine, an immediate 48-point deduction in the 2023 County Championship, and a four-point deduction from the 2023 T20 Blast.Neither points deduction is likely to make any material difference to Yorkshire’s on-field ambitions this season. They finished fifth in the North Group standings in the Blast, and so missed out on a quarter-final berth of a competition that concluded earlier this month, while they are off the pace for promotion in Division Two of the Championship, after managing one win in their first ten fixtures. The official breakdown of the fine is as follows:

  • £80,000 in respect of Charge 1 (the mishandling of Rafiq’s case);
  • £50,000 in respect of Charge 2 (the deletion and destruction of data);
  • £135,000 in respect of Charge 3 (not taking action relating to racist behaviour); and
  • £135,000 in respect of Charge 4 (the systemic use of racist language over a prolonged period)Of this sum, £300,000 is to be suspended for a period of two years.Responding to the CDC’s decision, Yorkshire issued a statement acknowledging that they accepted the sanction, but added that they were disappointed at the points deductions, echoing the concerns of their head coach, Ottis Gibson, who believed the club’s new regime should not be punished for past failings.”Following representations by the board at last month’s hearing, the CDC and ECB have today acknowledged the vast amount of work done by YCCC to overcome the cultural issues that existed within the club, which allowed racist and discriminatory behaviour to go unchallenged,” the statement added.”We are accountable for these issues, and we accepted four amended charges as part of a continued commitment to ensure we are able to move forward.”We are disappointed to receive the points deductions which affects players and staff at the club, who were not responsible for the situation. They have worked tirelessly on and off the field to rebuild Yorkshire into an inclusive and welcoming club that reflects the communities it serves. Greater clarity over our situation will allow us all now to look ahead.”There remains much to do, but we have made significant investments to put in place best practice processes and procedures, as well as driving equity, diversity and inclusion through a new framework and taking important steps to improve the matchday experience to encourage greater inclusivity and tackle discrimination. This is in addition to the real progress we have seen on our Performance Pathway, ensuring young cricketers from all backgrounds can take part regardless of their economic circumstances.”We look forward to continued dialogue with the ECB to ensure the financial penalty does not hinder our ongoing commitment to build on the strong foundations that have been laid. We remain focused on efforts to secure YCCC’s sustainability, ensuring the stability required to create a brighter future for all associated with Yorkshire Cricket.”Speaking after Yorkshire’s fixture against Division Two leaders Durham at Scarborough ended in a draw, with bad weather washing out days three and four, Gibson said: “At least next year we know where we stand. We have four games left in the Championship this season, and that’s 96 points that we can play for. We’ll try and win the next four games. That’s all we’re trying to do – win every game we play.”
  • Luis Reece 201*, Harry Came 141* complete Derbyshire shut-out of Glamorgan

Openers put on record-breaking stand to see home side to safety on final day

ECB Reporters Network28-Jul-2023Luis Reece and Harry Came wrote themselves into the Derbyshire record books and ended Glamorgan’s victory hopes as the LV=Insurance County Championship match at Derby ended in a draw.Reece and Came set a new county record opening stand of 360 with the pair batting through the fourth day to finish on career-best scores. Reece made 201 from 338 balls and Came 141 off 336 as Derbyshire firmly shut the door on Glamorgan to close 157 runs ahead having begun the day 125 behind.Glamorgan used nine bowlers without success on a day of fruitless toil for the promotion hopefuls who took 13 points while Derbyshire finished with nine. The visitors started the day still in with a chance of forcing victory and overcast conditions at least gave their bowlers some encouragement. But the pitch was certainly offering little and it soon became clear that another high-scoring Derby draw was the most likely outcome.Timm van der Gugten did find the outside edge in his opening spell but few balls beat the bat as Reece and Came played with the same discipline and concentration that had been a feature of their first-innings partnership. The hundred came up in the sixth over of the morning and represented a significant milestone as it was only the third time in Derbyshire’s history that there had been two century opening stands in a match.Glamorgan skipper David Llloyd, who will be playing his cricket at Derby next season, used five bowlers to try and breakthrough but to no avail.Reece completed his second hundred of the game from 177 balls and became only the 20th player to achieve the feat for Derbyshire in the Championship.Mitchell Swepson thought he had got Reece with the last ball of the session which struck him in front as he played back but the appeal was turned down which summed up a thoroughly dispiriting morning for the visitors. They may have reflected over lunch that when a prayer room which is currently being built on the ground is open, bowlers of all faiths will be queuing to get in given the nature of Derby pitches.Reece and Came scored 107 runs in the morning to leave their side only 18 behind and they continued to bat Derbyshire towards safety in the afternoon. The 200 stand came up in the 68th over and Came went to his second Championship century of the season when he hit Kiran Carlson’s offspin over mid on for his 12th four.It was another highly promising demonstration of application from the 24-year-old who, appropriately for the son of a vineyard owner, is maturing nicely.By tea, Derbyshire were 94 ahead and the only question was if Reece and Came could break the county’s record opening stand of 333 set by Reece and Billy Godleman against Northants in 2017.Glamorgan came out for the final session with Colin Ingram replacing Chris Cooke behind the stumps and Sam Northeast opening with his occasional off-spin. The milestone was broken when Reece drove Billy Root for a single and he reached his double hundred by cutting Zain-ul-Hassan for his 20th four just before the teams shook hands at 4.40pm.

Andy Flower takes over as head coach at RCB for three years

The contracts of Mike Hesson and Sanjay Bangar, director of cricket operations and head coach respectively, have not been renewed

Andy Flower has been appointed head coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore as the franchise looks to overturn a disappointing IPL 2023, where they failed to make the playoffs for the first time in four seasons. Flower has come on board on a three-year term to begin with. The decision follows a “comprehensive three-year performance review” following IPL 2023, where the team finished sixth and missed the playoffs narrowly. At RCB, Flower will reunite with Faf du Plessis, the captain, who he worked with earlier during his time as head coach of St Lucia Kings in the CPL.Flower replaced Sanjay Bangar, the former India allrounder, in the job after having also been in talks with Rajasthan Royals for a similar position under Kumar Sangakkara. The franchise is set to appoint a new director of cricket operations who will replace Mike Hesson. This could happen “over the next couple of months,” RCB vice-president Rajesh Menon said. The new director is expected to appoint the specialist coaches, which also puts a question mark over the future of the incumbents: Adam Griffith (bowling coach), S Sriram (assistant coach) and Malolan Rangarajan (lead scout and fielding coach).

“I recognise the work put in by Mike Hesson and Sanjay Bangar, who are two coaches I respect,” Flower said in an RCB statement. “I’m particularly excited to be reunited with Faf. We have worked very well together in the past I look forward to forging our partnership and relationship into something bigger and better.”Till the end of IPL 2023, Flower was head coach of Lucknow Super Giants. Under him, they made back-to-back playoffs in their first two years in the competition. In July, he was replaced by Justin Langer, the former Australia coach. Prior to his stint with LSG, Flower had been associated with Punjab Kings in the IPL.Flower comes on board with a decorated CV. A T20 World Cup-winning coach with England in 2010, the former Zimbabwe captain has also coached teams to titles at the PSL (Multan Sultans), ILT20 (Gulf Giants), and the men’s Hundred (Trent Rockets). With Flower in charge, St Lucia Kings reached the CPL final twice. Most recently, he worked with Australia as a consultant during the men’s Ashes.

Hesson had stepped into the role in similar circumstances as Flower in 2019, after RCB chose not to renew their contracts with Gary Kirsten, Ashish Nehra and Vikram Solanki following a last-place finish that season.Overall, Hesson led the team to three successive playoffs before the team fell away in their final must-win league game this year against Gujarat Titans. Bangar came on board in 2022, after Simon Katich’s exit as head coach, upon Virat Kohli’s recommendation. As reported earlier, the RCB management was deliberating changes to its coaching staff with the contracts usually up for renewal around September. The franchise is believed to have been keen to give Flower enough space and time leading into the auction.Menon also confirmed that the RCB women’s team will have a new head coach in place soon – Hesson performed the role in the first season of the Women’s Premier League. However, the management of the women’s team is “not likely” to come under the purview of the new director of cricket. “We wanted to have just the head coach and captain drive that ship.” RCB women finished fifth among six teams during the inaugural season.Three-time IPL finalists, RCB have never won the tournament. They last had a shot at the title in 2016, where they were pipped by Sunrisers Hyderabad in a close finish.

      WHAT HAPPENED?

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Mauricio Pochettino responded to Christian Pulisic’s recent comments, in which the U.S. star claimed that he had offered to join the national team for a pair of friendlies before opting to sit out the Gold Cup. Pulisic said the USMNT coaching staff declined the offer, saying, "It's the coach's decision, I fully respect that. I didn't understand it, but it is what it is."

Pochettino said Saturday, one day before the Gold Cup opener, that it was a very clear call.

“With Christian, he explained that he wanted to be involved in the two games and, knowing that, I respect and understand him,” Pochettino said. “I understand him, but I don’t need him to understand our decisions. My position is that I am 53, with a lot of experience in football, and I was a player before I was a coach. If you want to understand this, it’s really obvious.

"It’s easy to understand that I wanted a roster to prepare in those two games because, for me, the Gold Cup is a very important competition. It’s not a problem because you need to listen and communicate.”

Pochettino opted to keep a consistent group for both the friendlies and the Gold Cup. He said in a pre-Gold Cup news conference that players don’t need to understand every choice he makes as head coach.

      WHAT POCHETTINO SAID

Pochettino insisted it should be up to the national team staff to analyze players' fitness.

"Players don't need to understand or not understand that," Pochettino said. "Players need to listen and stick with our plan. They cannot dictate the plan because, if so, then we'd invert positions, no? It is obvious, and the most important thing is that we explain. We explained why we decided not to include him [Pulisic] in the two friendlies. And then if you have some problems, it's not a problem if you understand or don't understand.

"I think it's so clear that we say that we want to start training with the same group for two friendly games. And it's up to us to assess, to analyze if you need rest or not. We have a group of professionals in performance, doctors, coaches, all in the federation, that can assess it. We assessed Sergino [Dest], we spoke with Sergino, and we decided not to include him in the Gold Cup and not in the two games."

      THE BIGGER PICTURE

Pulisic said he hadn’t spoken to Pochettino since the AC Milan winger opted to skip the Gold Cup. Pochettino offered an explanation, emphasizing that he avoids showing favoritism and relies heavily on his staff to scout players with their club teams.

The USMNT boss also said his door is open and that, in his view, all players – including Pulisic – are on equal footing.

“The communication is good with him, just like with any other,” he said. “I have the same communication with him as with others. I do not prioritize. You can see he's the best player and, yes, he's a good player, but he needs to perform. And I'm not going to treat him differently than, say, Diego [Luna]. If he performs well, then he's the best and he'll have a place with the national team. But it's not that players are here because they want to play, or want this or want that."

While he wouldn't reveal specifics, Pochettino said his communication with Pulisic is not a concern.

“When I signed my contract with the federation, I am the head coach. I am not a mannequin," he said. "But this is how we are and that is my culture about football. I know that the communication has gone very well because, in March, I was talking a lot about the World Cup, a lot about the different things that I'm not going to discuss. Because, for me, it's private. But, yes, I have good communication with him.”

      WHAT NEXT FOR THE USMNT?

The USMNT will kick off the Gold Cup on Sunday against Trinidad and Tobago, and Pochettino is hoping that the start of the tournament will now allow the team to move on from all of the recent off-field drama.

"We are content with our decision," Pochettino said. "Our decision was to prepare for the Gold Cup and give the opportunity to the players who are going to be involved in the Gold Cup, and to prepare for this tournament. Yes, now we need to move on. I think it's a lot of noise, but it's not affecting us because I think we are so focused on this Gold Cup."
