The controversial moment came in the 33rd minute at the Gtech Community Stadium, when Matthijs de Ligt went down injured but Taylor did not stop the game, allowing Kevin Schade to head the Bees into the lead. Speaking on Monday Night Football, however, the official was adamant he had made the right call.

Taylor said: "The main consideration was my responsibility is to decide if De Ligt is seriously injured or not. In this situation because he's sitting up I don't consider that serious and allowed the game to continue. It's probably more a foul on [Yoane] Wissa than the other way."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Premier League referees are generally asked to consider a serious injury as a knock to the head, otherwise the game will be allowed to continue. Brentford went on to win the game 4-3 and ensure they will finish above United this season.

Hazlewood doubt for South Africa series after suffering side strain

Josh Hazlewood is in doubt for the start of the series against South Africa after being ruled out of the second Test against West Indies in Adelaide with a side strain.Initially his withdrawal from the match was attributed to “general soreness” but further investigation revealed the side strain. He will return to Sydney on Friday for rehabilitation and be assessed again after the West Indies series.Michael Neser was recalled for his second Test, at the scene of his debut last year, meaning two changes to Australia’s attack with Scott Boland having replaced the injured Pat Cummins.Related

The first Test against South Africa starts in Brisbane on December 17. The situation has echoes of how last summer panned out for Hazlewood when he picked up a side strain against England at the Gabba and then missed the rest of the Ashes.”I feel for Joshy, he’s pretty understandably flat,” Cummins told . “It’s a low-level strain in his side. He was a little bit sore after the last Test match, had a bowl in the nets yesterday to prove his fitness and was a bit sorer than we’d all hoped.”Last week’s Perth Test was just Hazlewood’s second since the Brisbane outing against England having played just once on the tours of Pakistan and Sri Lanka – in Rawalpindi – with Australia then opting for two frontline spinners. The fact Australia have already lost two of their key fast bowlers early in the season highlights the challenges of managing them through a hectic schedule which sees five Test played in little more than five weeks. While the first-choice quicks won’t be involved in the BBL during January, there is not much of a break before they head to India for four Tests. Those fixtures were confirmed by the BCCI on Thursday with the opening Test beginning on February 9 in Nagpur followed by matches in Delhi, Dharamsala and Ahmedabad with the last Test starting on March 9.However, it is unlikely that Australia will field three frontline quicks and Cameron Green in all those matches. As was the case last season in Adelaide, Mitchell Starc was the first-choice quick who remained in the XI against West Indies. He has shown outstanding resilience over the last few years and played all ten matches against England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.Lance Morris, the uncapped Western Australia quick who is regarded as the fastest bowler in the country, had also been added to the squad ahead of the Adelaide Test.

-O atual momento do clube é OK, nada espetacular.

Ipswich must rue losing the "best CB outside of the top five leagues"

Ipswich Town have the distraction of the FA Cup to overcome on Monday when facing off against Nottingham Forest, with a surprise win at the City Ground no doubt boosting the Suffolk side’s bruised confidence.

Indeed, last time out in the Premier League saw the Tractor Boys lose dramatically to a Manchester United team reduced to ten men for all of the second half, leaving Kieran McKenna’s men deep in relegation trouble.

Ipswich Town managerKieranMcKennaapplauds fans after the match

His lowly team’s defensive fragilities have been their undoing all campaign long – even when his team have looked competent in forward areas – with January loanee Ben Godfrey failing to add any needed stability when thrown into action at the back.

Ben Godfrey's poor displays for Ipswich

Of course, it’s not all down to the Atalanta loanee as to why Ipswich have leaked so many goals this season, with the Tractor Boys shipping a concerning 57 strikes.

To add context, only Leicester City and Southampton occupying the bottom two spaces have given up more goals, but Godfrey has been responsible for ten of those hitting the back of the net from his limited game-time.

The ex-Everton defender had a hellish debut back on English shores versus Manchester City, with his relegation-threatened side losing 6-0 to the reigning top-flight champions.

Godfrey would last 64 minutes, but in that time he was on the pitch, he failed to register a single tackle, interception or block, with the Man City attackers surging forward with a certain swagger knowing the 27-year-old was way off the pace.

He was equally run ragged last time out at Portman Road when Ange Postecoglou’s rejuvenated Tottenham Hotspur came to town, with both of Spurs’ opening strikes in the mainly one-sided affair coming from Heung-min Son twisting and turning the ropey number 44 for fun, who only lasted one half of football this time around.

Ipswich must wish they could turn back the clocks to when they had this other loanee in defence, who has since gone on to cement himself as a staunch option for his current club on Europe’s biggest stage.

Former Ipswich loanee now one of the best in Europe

Ipswich has been home to a number of top loanees over the years, with the likes of Omari Hutchinson calling the club a temporary sanctuary last season, before then penning a permanent deal before the 2024/25 campaign got underway.

The relegation candidates must rue not winning the permanent signature of Cameron Carter-Vickers now, however. Indeed, the defender has gone from strength to strength since exiting Suffolk in 2018 after making 17 appearances in blue.

The USA international would show signs of his class during his brief loan stint at the club – with a respectable five clean sheets picked up in league action – but it’s safe to say he’s transformed into a crucial part of the Celtic jigsaw ever since making the switch to Glasgow from Tottenham.

From 23 league appearances this campaign, Carter-Vickers has helped himself to a hefty 13 clean sheets on top of averaging 5.6 duels won on average per contest.

However, it was in the Champions League against an intimidating Bayern Munich attack that he would win the tag of being the “best centre-back outside of the top five leagues” by the Athletic’s Alex Barker.

Looking at the table above, it’s clear that Carter-Vickers isn’t fazed by the bright lights of the big occasion – unlike Godfrey – with a valiant effort put in by the 27-year-old across both legs, even if Brendan Rodgers’ Bhoys did bow out as 3-2 losers on aggregate.

Previously hailed as “brilliant” for his efforts in Scotland by ex-Rangers player Andy Halliday, Ipswich would love to have Carter-Vickers back in his current pomp to shore up their porous defence.

But, they’ll have to make do with what they already have, hopeful that strong performances will come in their battle to beat the drop.

Amorim requests INEOS sign "exciting" £30m+ star with Gyokeres for Man Utd

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has personally requested two summer signings, including an “exciting” £30m+ winger, according to a report.

Amorim called into question

It was always going to be a difficult task to take on the Man United job, with the squad underperforming for such a sustained period, and it would be fair to say it has been a mixed start for Amorim at Old Trafford.

There is now a feeling some of the players have doubts about whether the former Sporting CP boss’ style of play will prove to be successful, and Gary Neville has also been critical of the new three-at-the-back formation.

“I thought it would get better when Ruben Amorim came in, the enthusiasm of him and the new system, the players would buy into and we’d see a bounce, but we’ve seen the absolute opposite and it’s got a lot worse.

“They (United) are obviously going to stick with Amorim. But the more you lose, the more difficult it is for the manager to convince the players of his idea.”

With the Portuguese coach unwilling to compromise on his principles, the only solution is to bring in new options who will buy in to his system, and a report from Spain has revealed he has now requested the signing of two players he knows very well.

Amorim is said to have personally requested INEOS sign Geovany Quenda and Viktor Gyokeres in the summer, and there is a feeling the opportunity to be a part of their former manager’s project could help lure the duo to Old Trafford.

Sporting CP's GeovanyQuendain action

The 40-year-old is keen to bring in players familiar with his style of play, meaning Gyokeres fits the bill, and there are even rumours a pre-summer agreement has already been reached for the Sweden superstar.

Quenda could be an "exciting" signing

Gyokeres has made a name for himself with his fantastic goal-scoring record in Portugal, and while Quenda is a little more obscure, there are plenty of signs he could also be a good addition this summer.

The winger is still only 17-years-old, but he has managed to force his way into the Sporting first team this season, picking up four assists in the league and receiving high praise from football talent scout Jacek Kulig after bagging his first goal.

Quenda’s emergence as a key player for Sporting at such a young age indicates he could be a fantastic signing for United, but it also means he will not come cheap, with a report revealing the teenager may cost £30m+.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Speaking to the Daily Star, the Wrexham co-owner claimed he'd watched the goal that sealed Wrexham's promotion from League One, scored by Sam Smith against Charlton, dozens of times. The north Wales-based club made history by achieving three successive automatic promotions, and Reynolds is still basking in the joy of the 3-0 win over Charlton in their penultimate game of the season.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Wrexham are making light work of their advance up the English football pyramid. Promotion from League One to the Championship has proved an extremely difficult task for similarly well-supported clubs like Portsmouth and Sunderland in recent years, but Reynolds and McElhenney's club have smashed through that barrier, becoming the first club in England's top five divisions to earn three successive promotions.

  • WHAT REYNOLDS SAID

Reynolds said: “I have not required an adult diaper yet. I think I’ve watched Sam Smith’s martial arts/judo kick maybe 50, 60, 70 times. It’s my version of a gigantic pile of cocaine. I’m just sitting there, watching that over and over and over again and enjoying every second of it. It is remarkable.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR WREXHAM?

Wrexham's rise through the leagues has been seriously impressive, but achieving promotion from the Championship to the Premier League will be another matter entirely. The level of wealth held by clubs towards the top of the second tier massively outstrips that of even Hollywood-owned Wrexham, and it remains to be seen how much more money Reynolds and McElhenney will pump in for summer transfers.

Ahead of milestone 100th Test, Warner vows to play like his old self

“I know when I’m at my best, I’m taking the bowlers on”, he said, two days out of Boxing Day Test

Alex Malcolm24-Dec-2022David Warner has vowed to go back to the future on the eve of his 100th Test as he strives to end his lean three-year run in Test cricket ahead of a massive 12 months for Australia’s Test team.Warner’s milestone has given him pause to reflect on what has got him to this point and what has made him the player he is. He is just 78 runs shy of 8000 Test runs, and only four openers in history have scored more than his 24 Test centuries. Yet he has not passed three figures in Test cricket since January 2020.But with his milestone match just two days away, he has vowed to play like the Warner of old as he searches for that elusive Test century.”I know when I’m at my best, I’m taking the bowlers on,” he said on Saturday. “It goes well and it flows with the team and the guy at the other end. Now I’ve probably gone a bit more responsible and trying to put the team into a good position without playing a bit rash.”If anything I can probably be a bit more aggressive and go back to the older me, take them on a little bit more. But I think that also is dictated from what wickets you are getting.”You don’t want to have a dig at the curators, but the last two years our wickets have been green. If I go out there play a cover drive and nick one, you guys [the media] will have a feeding frenzy.”But now I’m in good positions and I’m nicking off, that’s the nature of the beast. This might be a wicket where I can go out and play like the old me. So you have to adapt to those conditions that’s what I’ve been doing the last 18 months.”Warner’s assertion that he has been more circumspect is evident in his strike-rate over the last three years. It has dipped to 57.21 compared to his staggering career rate of 71.18. Even more concerning though is the runs. In his last 15 Tests and 27 innings he has averaged just 26.07 with only four half-centuries. His numbers are even leaner in 2022. He has not scored a half-century in his last 10 Test innings.Warner’s claim that he needs to be more aggressive doesn’t quite stack up against some of his dismissals in the West Indies series where he was out driving aggressively away from his body in three of his four innings. But he claims he has been out of luck rather than out of form from either a technical or decision-making standpoint.”You look at some of the chop-ons and I’ve been in great positions when I’ve been nicked off,” Warner said. “So there’s nothing you can actually do about that. That’s what happens in the game of cricket, it ebbs and flows.”People [were] writing me off in that one-day game here [against England] and I went out and scored a hundred on a pretty dicey wicket.”It is about making runs. You’re never out of form. They’re not the words that I use and they’re definitely not used in our change rooms. It’s about [being] out of runs. And for me, I’ve got those starts but I keep having a little bit of misfortune but at the end of the day it comes around and when it comes around it comes around fast.”Warner is hopeful it can come thick and fast on Boxing Day against a familiar foe. In celebrating his 100th Test this week he has been reminded of some of his great innings against South Africa, including his extraordinary 2014 tour that yielded three centuries against a world-class attack. While South Africa’s current attack hopes they have inflicted some psychological scarring on Warner in Brisbane, he has no such fears.”I think if you look at the attacks that I’ve faced over my career, I wake up every day going into the nets facing the best attack in the world,” Warner said.”I’ve faced guys that bowl 145kph every training session. So it’s not different for me. Am I scared going in those nets? 100% I’m scared. Going into the nets and facing those guys for the last decade has been a challenge in itself.”But going out there and knowing that I’ve put numbers on the board against some of the great attacks that South Africa has produced, they stay with me when I go out there. You speak about Cape Town [2014], that was probably my best whole batting performance from the batting perspective and a lot of good things happened to me when I played against the South African attack.”For me, it’s about as I said, come out here with a positive mindset and hopefully I’ll keep replicating that.”

Cummins, Hazlewood strikes leave Australia with a glimmer of hope for a result

Hosts set up Test by declaring after lunch on day four with Khawaja stranded on 195

Tristan Lavalette07-Jan-2023Stumps Australia quick Pat Cummins tormented South Africa with a sensational spell late on day four as the continued their bold push for a third Test victory at the SCG.At stumps, South Africa were still well short of the follow-on target after Cummins’ earlier declaration of Australia’s first innings. Four straight sessions had been lost due to rain, but Australia still believe they can secure a series sweep to book a spot in the World Test Championship final in June.Cummins fuelled their hope with the late wickets of Khaya Zondo and Kyle Verreynne to leave South Africa nervously placed with 98 overs to be bowled on day five. There is only a small chance of rain forecast in Sydney for Sunday.Amid gloomy conditions, Cummins produced an outstanding spell marked by inconsistent bounce from around the wicket. Having threatened with the short ball, Cummins bowled a gem of a full delivery to trap Zondo lbw for 39 after the batter unsuccessfully reviewed the decision. He almost replicated the delivery to Marco Jansen but the ball pitched outside the leg stump before hitting the pads. Looking like taking a wicket on almost every ball, spurred on by an enthusiastic crowd, Cummins from over the wicket had Verreynne caught at slip after producing a perfect length delivery. He had earlier picked up recalled batter Heinrich Klaasen, whose only previous Test match was against India in 2019, with a nasty short delivery that was gloved to wicketkeeper Alex Carey.A pumped-up Josh Hazlewood also starred with the wickets of skipper Dean Elgar and Temba Bavuma. Having been preferred over Scott Boland, Hazlewood repaid the faith of the selectors on his return after suffering a side strain against West Indies in the opening Test of the home season. He troubled Elgar in particular with vicious short-pitched deliveries, and eventually hit his glove to be caught behind. Elgar has only mustered 46 runs in five innings during a wretched series. He had survived a contentious low catch at slip after edging Hazlewood to Steven Smith, who flung out his right hand in a spectacular effort, but it was given not out on the soft signal.Initial replays seemingly showed the ball going straight into a full-flung Smith’s right hand. But further replays cast doubt over whether some of the ball brushed the turf and it was enough for third umpire Richard Kettleborough to uphold the not-out decision. It was consistent with Kettleborough’s decision-making – on day one, when Marnus Labuschagne edged to first slip where Simon Harmer claimed a low catch but replays proved inconclusive, Kettleborough had decided in favour of the batter too.Hazlewood in the final session dismissed Bavuma, who tamely edged a length delivery to end what had been a promising innings. He played aggressively at times and struck spinner Nathan Lyon for a couple of sixes before tea, but was left despondent after his dismissal for 35.ESPNcricinfo LtdLeft-arm spinner Ashton Agar bowled just seven overs and failed to threaten in his first Test match since 2017, and his first in Australia.Cummins’ declaration after lunch meant opener Usman Khawaja remained stuck on his highest Test score of 195. Frank Worrell and Sachin Tendulkar are the only other batters apart from Khawaja to have been in the 190s when their captains declared an innings closed.Matthew Renshaw was on 5 in his first Test match since 2018, after having tested positive for Covid-19 before play on day one. He returned negative rapid antigen tests yesterday and this morning. There was a pre-match ceremony dedicated to Glenn McGrath’s late wife, Jane, who died of breast cancer in 2008. It is traditionally held on day three but was moved because of the weather, and players from both teams were presented with pink caps.

Insider now believes Aston Villa will lead race to sign "incredible" star

Potentially stealing the transfer headlines once again, a Premier League insider has now backed Aston Villa to lead the race in pursuit of one particular attacking reinforcement this summer.

Aston Villa transfer news

After grabbing the spotlight by signing Marco Asensio, Axel Disasi and Marcus Rashford on loan as well as welcoming Donyell Malen and Andre Garcia on a permanent basis in the January transfer window, Aston Villa look destined to return to the market this summer.

A recent 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Crystal Palace certainly suggests that there’s still plenty of work to be done in the Midlands and the Villans seem to be well aware of that with the transfer rumours coming thick and fast.

Among those who have reportedly emerged onto Villa’s radar is Porto’s Samu Aghehowa, who could yet arrive to replace Jhon Duran following his January exit to Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr.

The young forward has enjoyed an excellent debut season in Portugal, potentially sparking a Premier League battle for his signature when the summer arrives. He’s not the only attacking addition on Villa’s radar it seems, however.

Aston Villa lining up summer swoop to sign "aggressive" want-away £20m ace

He’s a wanted man…

ByTom Cunningham Feb 27, 2025

Former Premier League scout Mick Brown now believes that Aston Villa will be in pole position to sign Ferran Torres from Barcelona this summer in a move that would bring the winger back to English football.

Aston Villa backed to enter pole position for "incredible" Torres

Speaking to Football Insider about Villa’s potential move to sign Torres, Brown said: “He’s got that Premier League experience with Man City and Villa would give him the chance to play more regularly than he is at Barcelona. Their contacts in Spain will allow them to do their work behind the scenes and probably move to the front of the queue to sign him.

“They could do with a right-winger in the summer, that’s somewhere Emery wants to strengthen. Bailey and his other options come into the side, they do what they do, but they’re not a shoo-in to play every week and that’s what they need.

“Emery wants a stronger option who can nail down his place in the side. He wants more firepower on that side as well, because their left-hand side is very strong with the likes of Malen, Rashford and others.

FC Barcelona'sFerranTorrescelebrates scoring their second goal

“Adding quality and balance on the right will make them even more lethal. So it’s definitlely a deal which makes sense for Villa and I think it’s one they’re going to work on.”

Previously praised for his “incredible sense of goal” by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, Torres desperately needs a return to English football. The Spaniard has started just seven La Liga games all season and is unlikely to win his place back anytime soon amid competition from Lamine Yamal and Raphinha.

At Villa, meanwhile, if Rashford does not arrive on a permanent basis, then Torres could instantly receive the role he has been looking for since leaving Manchester City.
