Celtic have hit gold with "brilliant" star who’s now worth more than Jota

Celtic ensured that they will, at the very least, be in the play-off stage of the Champions League with a 1-0 win over Young Boys at Parkhead on Wednesday night.

The evening was, somewhat, spoiled, however, by the news that Kyogo Furuhashi was in advanced talks to sign for Ligue 1 side Rennes in a £10m deal.

Brendan Rodgers has since confirmed that the Japan international is expected to move on from Glasgow, having expressed his desire to complete a transfer away from the club.

The Northern Irish head coach also confirmed that Portuguese forward Jota is expected to seal a return to Parkhead, coming the other way from Rennes.

The fee Celtic are set to pay for Jota

According to Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph, Celtic are set to pay a fee of around £8m to sign the Ligue 1 forward, who left Paradise 18 months ago.

In the summer of 2023, shortly after Rodgers returned to the club, Jota joined Saudi Arabian side Al Ittihad in a deal reported to be worth £25m, but it did not work out for him in the Pro League or in Ligue 1, which has allowed the Hoops to snap him up for £17m less than what they sold him for.

As you can see in the graphic above, Jota was incredibly productive during his first two seasons with the Bhoys and could come in as a bargain signing if he can replicate that form this time around.

His current market value, given the fee Celtic are set to pay, is £8m, though, and the Hoops have some players in their squad who are worth even more than him, including Reo Hatate.

Celtic have hit gold with Reo Hatate

Three years ago, in January of 2022, the Scottish giants signed the Japan international for a reported fee of £1.4m from Kawasaki Frontale.

In the three years that the midfield maestro has been at Parkhead, Hatate has racked up 23 goals and 21 assists in 122 appearances for the club in all competitions.

The 27-year-old star, who was hailed as “absolutely brilliant” by Rodgers earlier this season, has been a bargain signing for the Scottish giants, as shown by the number of games played and goal contributions for someone who only cost £1.4m.

As you can see in the table above, Celtic have also hit gold with Hatate when you consider the way his market valuation, per Transfermarkt has soared over the past three years.

The Japanese dynamo has got to a point where he is currently valued at £9.3m, which is £1.3m more than the club are set to pay for Jota, who was a £25m star less than two years ago.

Talks held: Celtic keen on signing "incredible" star who'd help Idah shine

Celtic are reportedly interested in a swoop to bring the forward to Parkhead this month.

ByDan Emery Jan 24, 2025

Irrespective of how Hatate’s career at Parkhead goes on to end in the future, the Hoops won the lottery when they swooped to secure his services in 2022 and should look back on that deal with great pleasure.

Imagine him & Raskin: Rangers eye move for "impressive" Diomande upgrade

Fair to say, Rangers boss Philippe Clement has plenty of work to do in the January transfer window.

Ahead of the New Year’s Old Firm derby coming up at Ibrox on Thursday afternoon, the Gers are a whopping 14 points adrift run away league leaders and fierce rivals Celtic.

The last-gasp defeat at St Mirren on Boxing Day, followed by a 2-2 draw at Motherwell three days later, has cranked up the pressure on Clement, hence why he’ll be looking to recruit reinforcements this month.

Rangers interested in new midfielder

According to a report by reporter Ižak Ante Sučić for Germanijak, Rangers, as well as Club Brugge and AZ Alkmaar, are interested in signing Varaždin midfielder Leon Belcar.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

They add that the 22-year-old is contracted to the Croatian club until 2026, but that they plan to “make a lot of money on him”.

Varaždin president Dražen Vitez claims he is yet to receive any official bids for Belcar, only willing to sell his most-prized asset for in excess of €700,000 (around £580,000), with Karlo Lusavec’s move to Danish outfit Horsens being used as a benchmark.

So who is Belcar, and how would he fit into Rangers’ team?

Where Leon Belcar would fit in at Rangers

Belcar is a 22-year-old defensive midfielder, operating at the base of Varaždin’s back-line, starting all but one of their HNL matches this season, the only one he’s missed being as a result of a suspension.

Despite his defensive instincts, Belcar has scored three goals during this campaign to date, most-recently firing home from the edge of the area during a 2-1 victory over Šibenik in late November.

At international level, he’s earned six caps for Croatia’s U21s, although he won’t be adding to that tally, given that the Mladi Vatreni were heartbreakingly beaten by Georgia on penalties, thereby missing out on a place at this summer’s U21 Euros in Slovakia.

Instead, could Belcar spend 2025 acclimatising to life in Glasgow? Let’s see how he compares to Rangers’ two most-used central midfielders.

As outlined above, Nicolas Raskin comes out on top for most of the metrics included, but that should not be too surprising given his excellent form this season, with former Rangers defender Alan Hutton describing the Belgian as “brilliant”, adding that he has to be the first name on the teamsheet in midfield.

However, Belcar does compare favourably to Mohamed Diomandé, who’s made 28 appearances across all competitions so far, including starting seven of the eight Champions League or Europa League matches.

But this is exactly why Belcar – whose numbers are still “really impressive” in the eyes of Scottish football content creator Kai Watson – would be a success. He’s a different style of midfielder; Raskin excels out of possession, while the young Croat is at his best on the ball.

Rangers do have somewhat recent history when it comes to signing talent from the Croatian top-flight, with mixed success.

Following a Europa League qualifying victory over Osijek in 2018, Steven Gerrard was so impressed with what he saw he signed two of the White and Blues’ players.

Eros Grezda’s 17-game stint at Ibrox was, at best, unmemorable, but the other member of this double-deal was Borna Barišić, who would make 236 appearances for the Gers, becoming a cult hero, a key figure as they won the Premiership title in 2021 and then reached the Europa League Final the following season.

That same summer seven years ago, Nikola Katić joined from Slaven Belupo Koprivnica and, while he was far from a major success, his headed winner at Parkhead in December 2019 means he will never be forgotten.

Thus, Belcar could become the latest Croatian to make his mark in Govan.

He's like De Bruyne: Rangers could finally bin Dowell by signing £3.3m star

Not much sunshine on Neath as Glamorgan hearts are broken

Craig and Charlie Reid can rest easy. So can Somerset’s chief executive, Gordon Hollins, and so can many other supporters of Hibernian FC in Craigmillar, Sighthill and Muirhouse. Football’s finest anthem will not be appropriated to exalt the summer game. There wasn’t much sunshine on Neath today.Very little singing either, come to that, unless we count Lancashire’s one-word victory chant, which is about as tuneful as a drunk banging two bin-lids together. Unfortunately for their opponents, Lancashire’s cricket is more accomplished and altogether more worthy of the Reids’ proclamations. Their victory today, which maintains their excellent chance of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Royal London Cup, was achieved with 14 overs to spare as they overhauled 177, Keaton Jennings making an unbeaten 77 and the outcome never in serious doubt once Glamorgan’s batsmen had failed badly on a wicket that played well. But this was another proud afternoon for a cricket club which gave the game two England captains in Tony Lewis and Cyril Walters as the next page was written in the sporting history of a town where the Welsh Rugby Union was founded in the Castle Hotel in 1881.Related

  • Derbyshire knocked out of Royal London Cup after wash-out and points penalty

Religion is never far away in Neath. For all that the town seeks to transcend stereotype, there is still a Welsh chapel; there is still St David’s church, which lies within the rectorial benefice; and there is still the English Baptist chapel which does service as a food bank in a street that also boasts a tattoo parlour.Consumption and decoration came in rather different forms at The Gnoll. The Round Table ran the hospitality tent and they placed several round tables within it. In the public areas, there were representatives of local clubs: Cimla, Briton Ferry and Ynysygerwn and some wore their polo shirts or baseball caps. That said, it takes more than local enthusiasm to disturb Lancashire’s cricketers this year and the visitors’ chances were bolstered when they won the toss on a cloudy morning and opted to bowl on a pitch that had spent most of the previous 24 hours under cover while warm rain fell. We wondered how a new white ball might behave on it; we found out soon enough. At least, it did enough to catch the edge of Tom Bevan’s bat in the second over of the morning when the opener attempted a Waitrose drive at an Aldi point in the innings. And it helped Tom Bailey again in his next over when Sam Northeast was leg before wicket for just two. But any thoughts of a very low-scoring scrap were quickly dispelled by Colin Ingram, whose scorching square cut off Will Williams was an immediate rebuttal of the notion. Ingram collected two further fours later in the over but neither was as fierce. Indeed, they rather set the tone for a half-century marked by steady accumulation and a resolve not to let the bowlers settle.Other Glamorgan batsmen were not as clear-minded. Kiran Carlson batted well for nearly an hour before coming down the pitch to Will Williams and playing a curious cut-cum-slap that only nicked a catch. Chris Cooke made nine before his flat-footed drive gave Liam Hurt his first wicket and it needed Joe Cooke’s 53-run stand with Ingram to ensure Glamorgan had a total which impersonated respectability.Cooke made 43 of those runs and his seven boundaries, almost all of them thunderous, included three fours and a six off George Balderson, the mightiest blow arcing over the stand and into the adjoining rugby ground. Balderson settled the score in the same over, though when Cooke’s next attempted drive merely skewed off a thick edge to Danny Lamb at deep point. That wicket was the first of six to fall in 14 overs as Glamorgan collapsed from 129 for 4 to 177 all out.Having set himself to bat the innings, Ingram picked up Danny Lamb sweetly, all too sweetly, alas and was caught at deep square leg by Luke Wells. The tailenders soon returned to the conifer-shrouded pavilion, easy pickings for an all-seam Lancashire attack packed with bowlers who expect to prosper. The visitors’ pursuit was a gentle amble. Not too gentle, perhaps, for the spectator who was injured when a Glamorgan fielder tumbled into him when trying to prevent Wells’ third six, and painful for home bowlers who must have known quite early on that they were on the wrong end of a towsing. Otherwise, though, it was easy for Wells, who made 50 before he was leg before when attempting to sweep Carlson, and easier still for Jennings and Josh Bohannon, who put on an unbroken 97, with Bohannon’s pull off Andy Gorvin ending the match in the brightest sunlight of the day.Yet nobody left the Gnoll until Lancashire were within ten runs of victory, and this was more evidence that such occasions as this are treasured in a town where sport has often offered escape; a town where three successive Australian tourist teams played Glamorgan in the latter years of the last century; a town where, on darkening November evenings in the 1980s, cathode rays lit the small parlours on Saturday evenings and Paul Thorburn’s penalty goals hung in the air like a song.

Fulham now make contact about signing "fantastic" 27 y/o defender

Fulham have now made contact over the signing of a “fantastic” defender, but there will be competition for his signature from a number of Champions League clubs, according to a report.

Cottagers eyeing a defender

The Cottagers have had a quiet January transfer window so far, but Marco Silva is looking to get some new signings through the door over the next fortnight, setting his sights on a new defender.

FC Midtjylland centre-back Ousmane Diao has now been named as a potential target, as the Premier League side have been captivated by the youngster’s performances, and a deal could be relatively cheap, being valued at just £3m by the Danish club.

With Fulham’s nine-game unbeaten run coming to an end in their 3-2 defeat at West Ham United last time out, Silva may be even more determined to get a new defender through the door this month.

Fulham now considering offer to sign "dominant" gem they're captivated by

He’s one to watch…

ByTom Cunningham Jan 15, 2025

Foot Mercato have now revealed a player the Cottagers may target to shore up their defence, stating they have asked for information about Mainz 05 defender Anthony Caci, who has been impressing in the Bundesliga this season.

However, it may be difficult to get a deal done, as a number of top clubs are queuing up for Caci’s signature, with Aston Villa, Valencia, Borussia Dortmund and Benfica also being named as potential suitors.

As things stand, the German club are not in a position where they need to sell, as the 27-year-old is contracted until 2027, but it remains to be seen whether interest from some of Europe’s top clubs turns his head.

If a suitable offer is received, Mainz would be willing to sell the Frenchman, but it is unclear what sort of fee they would be looking to receive.

Caci could improve the Cottagers' backline

The Mainz full back received high praise for his defensive aptitude back in June.

However, the former Strasbourg man is also impressive in an attacking sense, as underlined by the fact he has picked up four assists in 17 Bundesliga games so far this season.

The “fantastic” full-back has predominantly featured at right-back, but he is also capable of playing on the opposite side, having made a total of 65 appearances at left-back throughout his career so far.

In that area of the pitch, the Forbach-born defender has amassed two goals and nine assists, once again showcasing his attacking talents. Fulham may be in need of a new left-back soon, as there is still doubt over Antonee Robinson’s future, amid interest from the likes of Liverpool.

Caci’s performances indicate he could be a like-for-like replacement for the American, given his ability on the front foot, and his versatility makes him an attractive option for Silva.

Hansi Flick's side has possibly been the best team in world football this season, and they are in line to challenge for the European treble. Ex-scout now claiming "rapid" 26 y/o is in advanced talks to join Wolves

Off the back of a new manager bounce under Vitor Pereira, Wolverhampton Wanderers are in advanced talks to sign a defensive addition according to former Premier League scout Keith Wyness.

Wolves transfer news

Undoubtedly in need of reinforcements this month, it could be argued that Wolves welcomed their most important signing of the season before the January transfer window could even get underway when they swapped Gary O’Neil for Pereira. Defeating Manchester United and Leicester City before earning a point against Tottenham Hotspur, the new manager has settled straight in to drag the Midlands club out of the bottom three in style.

Pereira’s job is far from complete, however, and reinforcements should still prove to be the key to survival this season with names such as Tim Kleindienst already mentioned in recent reports.

Borussia Moenchengladbach'sKoItakuracelebrates scoring their first goal with Borussia Moenchengladbach's Tim Kleindienst

The Borussia Monchengladbach star has reportedly caught the eye of those in the Midlands and could yet arrive to hand Jorgen Strand-Larsen the ultimate attacking partner. That said, it’s not just Pereira’s frontline that Wolves could improve.

According to Wyness, Wolves are in advanced talks to sign Kevin Danso from RC Lens this month. The former Everton scout has even gone as far as to claim that talks are further along than initially reported earlier this week and the 26-year-old is a “red-hot favourite” to join the club.

"Selfless" £45k-p/w Wolves star could also leave alongside Matheus Cunha

This would be a frustrating blow for Vitor Pereira.

2 ByTom Cunningham Jan 2, 2025

Wyness told Football Insider: “Our favourite agent, Mendes, wants to get back involved in Wolves. We could see him help them out in some way. Aside from that, there are lots of rumours about Kevin Danso coming in from Wolves.

“He seems to be the one, and talks are actually a little bit further on than we’ve been led to believe in the media so far. He’s the red-hot favourite to come in, because defence is the area they’ll be looking. Let’s wait and see what else they can do.”

"Rapid" Danso could finally solve Wolves' centre-back crisis

Although it has become clear fairly quickly that it was the right time to part ways with O’Neil, there’s no doubt that the summer transfer window far from helped his side. The former manager was left without adequate cover at centre-back after bidding farewell to Max Kilman and was soon forced to turn towards Mario Lemina out of position as a result. The end, at that stage, looked inevitable.

It’s a mistake that those in the Midlands have seemingly been quick to learn from since hiring Pereira and could yet welcome Danso to finally solve their centre-back crisis. Described as an “excellent progressor” and a defender with “rapid recovery pace”, the Lens man would be a much-needed addition at Molineux.

As the January transfer window progresses, the central defender looks set to be one to watch as Wolves instantly look to back new manager Pereira.

KKR name Chandrakant Pandit head coach

Takes over from Brendon McCullum, after having led Madhya Pradesh to their maiden Ranji Trophy title earlier this year

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Aug-2022Chandrakant Pandit, the former India wicketkeeper, has been appointed as head coach of Kolkata Knight Riders. He takes over from Brendon McCullum, who quit after a three-year stint to take charge of England’s Test team.Pandit, who played five Tests and 36 ODIs for India between 1986 and 1992, is a highly regarded coach on the Indian domestic circuit. He won the Ranji Trophy, India’s premier first-class competition, with Mumbai in 2002-03, 2003-04 and 2015-16, but perhaps his biggest claim to fame is the success he has achieved with lower-profile teams: his triumph with an unfancied Madhya Pradesh team last season came after similar results with Vidarbha – he took them to their maiden Ranji title in 2017-18, and then helped them defend it 2018-19. Pandit was also director of cricket at Rajasthan when they defended their Ranji title – again, only their second ever – in 2011-12.Related

Pandit’s signing with KKR is not expected to come in the way of his commitments with MP at least for the upcoming 2022-23 domestic season. An MPCA official confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that he will continue to helm the team across formats. This will be Pandit’s maiden stint at an IPL franchise. He will be KKR’s first Indian head coach, and will team up with his one-time Mumbai protege Abhishek Nayar (assistant coach) and Bharat Arun (bowling coach).Pandit will also reunite with KKR captain Shreyas Iyer, whom he helped transition from the Under-19s to the senior Mumbai team. Iyer’s breakthrough Ranji season in 2015-16, during which he topped the tournament aggregates with 1321 runs including a match-winning century in the final against Saurashtra, came under Pandit. At the time, a young Iyer had spoken warmly about the lessons he had learned in discipline and patience from a tactician like Pandit.”We are very excited that Chandu is joining the Knight Riders family to lead us through the next phase of our journey,” Knight Riders CEO Venky Mysore said in a statement. “His deep commitment to what he does and his track record of success in domestic cricket is there for everyone to see. We are looking forward to his partnership with our skipper Shreyas Iyer which promises to be an exciting one.”Chandrakant Pandit has now won six Ranji Trophy titles as a coach•ESPNcricinfo LtdOutside of his work at various domestic teams, Pandit has also been associated with the National Cricket Academy and the India Under-19s in the past. At the 2010 Under-19 World Cup, he was head coach of an India team that included players such as KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Harshal Patel, Mandeep Singh and Jaydev Unadkat, among others.During his time with MP, Pandit has worked closely with KKR allrounder Venkatesh Iyer. Following MP’s Ranji win, he detailed to ESPNcricinfo in an interview how he had worked on getting Venkatesh to move up the order to open, to telling effect.Pandit, known to have a taskmaster-like approach to coaching, has spoken in the past about how his methods may not necessarily work in an IPL set-up. In a recent chat with ESPNcricinfo, he had suggested that the paucity of time to work with players, the cut-throat nature of the tournament, and a result-oriented mindset, may not always work to his advantage.”I have heard from players and others who have been associated with the Knight Riders about the family culture as well as the tradition of success that has been created,” Pandit said in a statement. “I am excited about the quality of the support staff and the players who are part of the set-up, and I am looking forward to this opportunity with all humility and positive expectations.”KKR have won two IPL titles, in 2012 and 2014. Since then, the closest they came was when they reached the final in 2021, when they lost to Chennai Super Kings. This year, a slew of indifferent results in the first half of the season pushed them out of contention for the playoffs, and they eventually finished seventh on the ten-team table with six wins and eight losses.
