With key fast bowler Anrich Nortje still missing with a hip injury, South Africa have bolstered their seam attack for the upcoming three-match ODI series against India by calling up Marco Jansen. The 21-year-old left-armer made his international debut at the Boxing Day Test in Centurion, where he picked up five wickets across the two innings, making good use of his 6’8″ frame on a pitch that offered quite a bit of uneven bounce.South Africa ODI squad

Batters: Temba Bavuma (capt), Quinton de Kock (wk), Zubayr Hamza, Janneman Malan, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Rassie van der Dussen, Kyle Verreynne

Allrounders: Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius

Fast bowlers: Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, Wayne Parnell, Sisanda Magala

In: Temba Bavuma, Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen, Kagiso Rabada

Out: Junior Dala, Daryn Dupavillon, Reeza Hendricks, Ryan Rickleton and Khaya Zondo

Quinton de Kock, who is currently on paternity leave, will be back in time for the first ODI of the series on January 19. The South Africa wicketkeeper has retired from Test cricket to spend more time with his family but he remains committed to the team’s cause in the limited-overs arena.Temba Bavuma captains a squad of 17 members which includes Wayne Parnell, who made his comeback to international cricket in November after a spell in England where he was a Kolpak player. Opener Zubayr Hamza, who scored a half-century on debut during the aborted series against Netherlands, has also been retained. But Junior Dala, Daryn Dupavillon, Reeza Hendricks, Ryan Rickleton and Khaya Zondo were all left out as South Africa brought back several first-choice picks who were rested last time around.Related

'It's hurting, and it's hurting badly' – Pollard places blame on batting group after defeat to Ireland

Despite result, West Indies captain is pleased with the performances of Odean Smith, Romario Shepherd and Shamarh Brooks

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Jan-2022A 2-1 ODI series defeat at home to Ireland marked “a very, very sad day” for West Indies cricket according to Kieron Pollard as he pulled up his batters for failing to post good enough totals.”I can safely tell you that it’s hurting, and it’s hurting badly,” he said after the decider in Kingston, which West Indies lost by two wickets.”Obviously it’s no secret. Disappointed the way that we played. Disappointed the way we batted throughout the entire series. That is the main reason why we would have faltered,” Pollard said. “We weren’t able to put enough runs on the board. The one game where we were scored 269, we were able to get over the line. But 229 and 212 at this international level is totally unacceptable.”Related

'I'll take this one on the chin' – Brooks stoic after missing ton

Asked whether the problem with the batters was technical or psychological, Pollard pointed in both directions, and beyond.”I think it is a combination of everything. I think, overall, holistically, I think we have a batting problem, with all the words as you mentioned – mentally, technically, being able to assess situations, conditions, and play appropriate shots that is needed at that point in time,” he said. “Again, as I have stated, it’s not just the 11 guys that are here, or the 15 guys that are here, it’s around the Caribbean, and we continue to, sort of, reward a guy going to Super50 and score a couple of hundred runs and then, you know, he has to play, or he has to get into the team.”We chop and change different individuals at different times, but I don’t think we are actually addressing the real problem. But, having said that, it’s always easier to, sort of, cast blame or put the responsibility on the guys that you are seeing. And as I said, as a leader, and as a leader of this team, obviously I can take that mantle and I can take that responsibility that we haven’t done well and that is not something we can hide from.”But as I have said before, it’s not just here, it’s overall across all formats, if you be totally, totally honest.”Even before the series had started, Pollard had criticised the West Indian players’ attitude towards fitness, calling it “an issue that has been plaguing us for the last couple of years”. Shimron Hetmyer, in fact, missed the series after failing to meet the expected standards. The problem, according to Pollard at least, goes deeper.Shamarh Brooks’s 93 helped West Indies win the first ODI•AFP/Getty ImagesThat said, West Indies had a few reasons to be happy. Shamarh Brooks, on ODI debut, hit 93 in the first match and totalled 137 from three innings at a strike rate of 86.16. Odean Smith contributed handy, and quick, runs while also doing well with the ball. Romario Shepherd’s 3 for 50 in the first game was impressive too.”Very, very proud of those two individuals [Smith and Shepherd],” Pollard said. “They have come in and they have shown, in the last series in Pakistan and even this series here, that they want to be at the international level. Obviously they are a bit rough on the edges – I am talking about somebody like an Odean Smith. But you can see the raw talent and… what we see around the world is that persons take that sort of raw talent and good players and make them into great players. That is something we need to do with some of the individuals that we have here. But are we willing to do that?”Romario, he has come in, diligent, hard worker, honest worker, does whatever the team requires, and he shows that he wants it. So well done to these two guys.”And Brooksy, coming into this series, getting a 90 and missing out on a hundred, (then) a 40-odd, missing out today – again, well done to him, but we need to be hungry in order to grab our chances. He would have been one who hadn’t gotten a chance and he had the perfect opportunity here to cement his place. And to the other guys – we need to work harder.”West Indies’ next engagement, again at home, is against England – a series of five T20Is from January 22-30.

Andre Russell arrives to reinforce Melbourne Stars

Melbourne Stars have continued to shore up their injury-plagued roster with West Indies allrounder Andre Russell the latest big-name signing. On the back of the Stars adding Pakistani quick Haris Rauf, 33-year-old Russell returns to the BBL for the first time since 2017 when he played the last of three seasons with Sydney Thunder.During that period, he scored 296 runs from 17 innings marked by a massive strike rate of 166.29, while he took 23 wickets at an economy of 7.97.Coincidentally, Russell’s five-match stint with Stars is set to begin against Thunder at the MCG on Friday. He is currently completing his mandatory 72 hours quarantine after flying into Sydney having played in the Abu Dhabi T10 competition.”To have someone of Andre’s quality play for the Melbourne Stars is a huge signing for our club,” Stars coach David Hussey said. “I can’t wait to work with him in the time that he’s here and look forward to his debut on Friday night.”Russell’s match-winning ability, which has made him a coveted T20 player worldwide for years, was evident when he smashed an unbeaten 90 from just 32 balls to power Deccan Gladiators to the title in Abu Dhabi. However, he had little impact with bat and ball at the T20 World Cup as defending champions West Indies exited with just one win. Russell scored just 25 runs from five innings and claimed three wickets in his return from a hamstring injury sustained in the second leg of the IPL.If Russell can recapture his best, it might help resuscitate Stars who are already under pressure after a record 152-run opening loss against two-time defending champion Sydney Sixers at the SCG.Stars were without Marcus Stoinis, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Joe Burns while towering quick Billy Stanlake is set to miss the entire season due to a back injury. The high-profile Stars surprisingly missed the playoffs last season and have yet to win a BBL title.

Liverpool willing to pay £25m for Man City target compared to Lionel Messi

Liverpool appear to be in a race with Manchester City as the pair eye up an impressive teenager ahead of a 2025 move, according to a fresh report.

Liverpool spoiled for choice in attack

Arne Slot’s arrival at Anfield has hardly seen the Reds miss a beat as he seamlessly took over the squad left by Jurgen Klopp, with the Reds making just a single outfield signing over the summer, much to the frustration of their fanbase.

Juventus forward Federico Chiesa was the only arrival, signing a four-year deal worth £150,000 a week. However, he has made just a single Premier League appearance to date and missed the international break with Italy through an unspecified injury, continuing a running theme across his career.

Nonetheless, his presence bolsters an already brimming array of options in attack for the new Liverpool boss. As it stands, Mohammed Salah, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz appear to be his preferred trio, but he can also call on Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliot as well as Chiesa when fit, in what appears to be the deepest attack in the Premier League.

There may still remain question marks over Nunez’s long-term future at the club, however, with the Uruguayan yet to truly deliver on the potential he promised during his time in Portugal, while Mohamed Salah will be out of contract this summer and has long been a target for Saudi Arabia.

Now, the Reds have been linked with a move for a teenage gem who drew comparisons to Lionel Messi as they look to rejuvenate their ranks.

Liverpool and Man City chase Premier League forward

That is according to a report in Spain, which claims that Liverpool and Manchester City have both sat up and taken notice of the performances of Brighton loanee Facundo Buonanotte this season.

The Argentine broke through at CA Rosario Central under the management of former Man City striker Carlos Tevez, and he revealed that the teenager reminded him of his one-time teammate Messi.

“I watch football and it’s been a long time since I’ve seen someone play who gives me as much pleasure as Buonanotte. When he brakes and accelerates, he reminds me of [Lionel] Messi. He is at a very high level.”

Bought by Brighton, he was sent on loan to Leicester City for the 2024-25 campaign and has already played a starring role for Steve Cooper’s side, grabbing three goals and two assists in the first stage of the Premier League season.

He drew plenty of praise from his current manager too, with Cooper explaining “He’s aggressive, a risk-taker with the ball and for a creative player he really puts in a defensive effort as well”.

Now, those attributes have attracted attention, with the report claiming that both Man City and Liverpool are “showing interest” in the youngster. It is added that the Argentine “could leave Brighton” next summer, but that the Seagulls would “not let him go for less than 30 million euros” (£25m), a fee that it is claimed both Manchester City and Liverpool would be willing to pay.

Under contract until 2028, Buonanotte could see that price tag increase should he continue to impress, but given the logjam of talent in Brighton’s attack, could he be forced to look elsewhere for regular football?

Mascherano told reporters: “Messi is the soul of this team. You saw this on the pitch. He is a kid playing and he doesn't want to lose. So for us it's a big big advantage. So we just need to keep him with this spirit. Because it's not just what he does on the pitch.

“It's what he translates to his team-mates and all that he does with his 37 years. He's not just playing in attack, he helps us in defence, running the centre-back, running the whole midfield. So he's magnificent.”

Maresca may have unearthed Chelsea’s own Saka in "superstar" teen

Chelsea may have spent a vast fortune since Todd Boehly took control of the club in September 2022, but they must not lose sight of the wonderful young talent that is coming through the academy.

The Stamford Bridge side have produced plenty of amazing players from their academy throughout the years, proving that the chequebook doesn’t need to be flashed during every single transfer window.

Chelsea’s most successful recent academy graduates

During the summer transfer window, the Blues sold Conor Gallagher to Atlético Madrid for a fee in the region of £34m.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher

The year before, Mason Mount, who had just a year left on his contract at the club, joined Manchester United for £60m. This is close to £100m profit made on two players who made their way through the youth academy before making an impression in the first team.

Reece James is another player who has shone for the Blues, going on to make over 150 appearances for the club since making his debut.

Reece James for Chelsea.

These three players alone prove that the Chelsea academy is a popular breeding ground for talent and there is no doubt that Maresca has plenty of teenagers to work with in the future.

Indeed, one has proved capable of making the step up to first team level as Tyrique George started Chelsea’s tie against Noah in the Europa Conference League in midweek.

Tyrique George could be Chelsea's own Saka

The winger was given the opportunity to showcase his skills from the starting XI in Europe, and he certainly looks like the real deal.

The Blues may have secured an easy 8-0 win against their opponents, but more importantly, it was giving chances to the likes of George which would make Maresca happy in the long term.

Starting on the right wing, the teenager exuded talents similar to Bukayo Saka as he terrorised the opposition defence throughout the clash. Not only does he have an eye for a killer pass, making four key passes, but the winger also created two big chances, attempted a dribble and delivered two crosses during his spell on the pitch.

It was a performance of maturity from the youthful attacker which could convince Maresca to use him in the next European tie, that’s for sure.

Dubbed a “superstar in the making” by a prominent content creator, George has all the required attributes to be a success at Chelsea.

Saka came through the Hale End academy at Arsenal to become one of the most feared wingers in the world, scoring 62 goals and grabbing 60 assists across 240 games for the Gunners.

Tyrique George

If George is given more chances in the first team between now and the end of the season, there is no reason why he cannot become Chelsea’s own version of Saka.

Maresca seems to trust him and time will tell with regard to how good he can become.

Arteta must now drop Trossard & unleash Arsenal’s "unplayable" talent

Arsenal host Liverpool at the Emirates tonight, in what is undoubtedly Mikel Arteta’s side’s biggest challenge of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign so far.

The Gunners will be looking to return to winning ways after falling to defeat against Bournemouth last weekend, in another outing ruined by an early dismissal.

Centre-back William Saliba was originally cautioned for dragging down striker Evanilson, but after an on-field VAR review, the Frenchman was given a straight red card.

He will subsequently miss this afternoon’s meeting, making the task a little bit harder for the Gunners if they are to inflict just a second league defeat of the season on Arne Slot’s team.

Numerous big decisions await the Spaniard, including who to replace Saliba with, but he may also be tempted to drop one player after his performances in the last seven days.

Why Arteta must drop Trossard against Liverpool

Leandro Trossard has had a week to forget on the pitch, all starting in the defeat against Andoni Iraola’s side at the Vitality last weekend.

The Belgian was the player who played the poor pass into the path of opposition striker Evanilson, which led to Saliba’s dismissal – undoubtedly costing Arteta’s side all three points in the process.

However, he was included from the off against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on Wednesday night, but once more failed to justify his selection.

He stepped up to take the penalty during the second 45, but his effort was denied as he failed to get on the scoresheet and help the Gunners secure a more comfortable victory over the Ukrainian outfit.

Given the nature of the fixture this evening, Arteta can’t be carrying any passengers who are struggling and lacking confidence – something which has been evident in the 29-year-old’s displays over recent weeks.

As a result, he could drop to the substitutes bench once again, handing an opportunity to one player who has deserved a start in recent months after his emergence in North London.

The man to replace Trossard against Liverpool

17-year-old midfielder Ethan Nwaneri has been nothing short of sensational for the club’s first team in recent times after his breakthrough over the last couple of years.

He made his Premier League debut in the 2022/23 campaign as a 15-year-old, making him the youngest player in the competition’s history – showcasing the trust placed in him by Arteta.

Nwaneri has already bagged two goals for the first team this season in the Carabao Cup tie against Bolton Wanderers at the Emirates, earning him increased minutes off the substitutes bench.

The Hale End academy star, who’s previously been dubbed “unplayable” by former Gunners star Jack Wilshere, has also impressed for various youth levels over the last 12 months, scoring ten goals in 13 appearances in the Premier League 2.

Although the game is one of the biggest of the season, Nwaneri would massively relish the opportunity to make his full Premier League debut in such a fixture – potentially adding a different dimension to the Arsenal side.

It will be a tough ask to secure all three points after Liverpool’s start and the current suspension situation at the back, but regardless, Arteta has shown time and time again that he’s able to make the right choice for these decisive moments.

49ers to lose second Leeds chief in Elland Road restructure after Steinsson

Following the earlier exit of technical director Gretar Steinsson, the 49ers are reportedly set to lose yet another Leeds United chief to force a restructure away from the action at Elland Road.

Leeds set to off-pitch change

The Whites have only just lost Steinsson, as reported by The Athletic’s Nancy Froston, with the former technical director now set to transition into a new position with the 49ers’ operation. Those at Elland Road will reportedly replace the departed chief internally rather than seek a fresh option outside of the club. Whether that proves to be a wise decision remains to be seen, however.

His exit comes at a time when Leeds need stability in pursuit of promotion back to the Premier League at the second time of asking. Things are only set to become more complicated following Steinsson, however, with another departure reportedly on the cards.

According to TeamTalk, Leeds are now set to lose head of recruitment Jordan Miles amid a major reshuffle at Elland Road. Leaving the 49ers with plenty to think about, it will reportedly be football advisor and consultant Nick Hammond and football operations Adam Underwood who step up their respective roles and take more responsibility behind the scenes.

Journalist shares what he's heard out of Leeds on Manor Solomon's future

He’s yet to score for the club…

1 ByTom Cunningham Nov 8, 2024

Miles’ reported exit follows a difficult summer in which Leeds lost a number of key men and were forced to turn towards the transfer market. Welcoming the likes of Ao Tanaka and Largie Ramazani, Miles could consider the window job done amid such difficulties in what proved to be his final flurry of signings at the club.

Leeds reshuffle comes at a bad time

If Leeds were to undergo such change then they should have done so before the Championship season or summer transfer window had a chance to get underway. Now running the risk of turning the attention away from Daniel Farke’s side, the 49ers must hope to have got things right. On the recruitment front, the Whites’ most difficult task came in the summer, but that doesn’t take away from the importance of the January transfer window.

If Farke’s side still find themselves behind in the race for automatic promotion by the time that the winter window arrives, then Hammon and Underwood should be tasked with reinforcing the Leeds squad.

Already, the likes of Lewis O’Brien have been linked with moves to Elland Road in 2025 in what could quickly become the first task on the list of those now in charge of recruitment in Yorkshire. The midfielder is currently on loan from Nottingham Forest at American outfit LAFC where he has discovered his best form to earn the attention of English football once again.

Another midfielder would certainly be a wise addition, but it remains to be seen whether Leeds’ reshuffle will enjoy such success on the recruitment front without Steinsson or Miles.
