Chelsea could now bid for £100,000-per-week Osimhen and Toney alternative

Journalist Miguel Delaney of The Independent has claimed that a Chelsea bid is now possible to sign one surprise Premier League striker, with Al-Ahli reaching agreements for Brentford striker Ivan Toney and Napoli's Victor Osimhen.

Chelsea and Al-Ahli in battle for Toney and Osimhen

The Saudi Pro League side have reportedly agreed moves for both Toney and Osimhen, with the former's potential Middle East switch amounting to around £40 million and the latter's totalling £57 million plus add-ons.

Toney is apparently set to undergo a medical at Al-Ahli after agreeing to join them, despite Chelsea eyeing the England international as an alternative to Osimhen and making an approach for him earlier this week (Sky Sports).

Fabrizio Romano claims that the Saudi side will only sign one of Osimhen or Toney, with the former agreeing personal terms but still hasn't given his definitive 'yes' over joining them, giving hope that Chelsea could still strike a deal for the Nigerian.

"Victor Osimhen has still NOT given the green light to Al Ahli on terms despite club-to-club agreement," said the journalist on X.

"Osimhen, still talking to Chelsea while #CFC delegation in Napoli trying to find a way until the end. Meanwhile, Al Ahli have agreed deal with Toney and Brentford."

It is also unclear as to what will happen with Al Ahli's medical for Toney if the 25-year-old does end up fully accepting a move to the Gulf, with his future up in the air as Chelsea submit their own bid for bid for Osimhen this morning.

Napoli star Victor Osimhen

"The Al-Ahli offer to Osimhen is a €30m salary on a four-year deal," wrote reliable journalist Ben Jacobs on X.

"There are €40m in bonuses on top taking the total package to €160m. Al-Ahli also prepared to sanction a release clause. Osimhen has agreed to terms but is waiting to see whether Chelsea counter. Al-Ahli offer to Napoli has been accepted. It is €68m plus add-ons taking the total package close to €80m."

In the event Chelsea cannot land on either Osimhen or Toney, Delaney writes that they may have an alternative in the Premier League.

Chelsea could make late move for Dominic Calvert-Lewin

As per the reporter, Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin is that man.

Amid the striker domino involving Al-Ahli, Toney and Osimhen, it is believed a late Chelsea swoop for Calvert-Lewin is "not impossible" if they cannot agree a deal for either of the former two.

The £100,000-per-week forward reportedly commands a £40 million price tag, according to Sky, but perhaps the Toffees could even charge more given the last-minute nature of a move and Chelsea's apparent desperation for a new number nine. The Englishman has scored 68 goals in 249 appearances for Everton in all competitions.

Chelsea closing in on deal for Euro 2024 star after tabling new £43m bid

Chelsea are closing in on an agreement for a Euro 2024 player after submitting a £43 million total bid for him, with Todd Boehly and BlueCo definitely not done in the transfer market ahead of deadline day on August 30.

Neto's arrival has also cast doubt on the future of winger Noni Madueke, with Newcastle linked in the last week and Chelsea reportedly open to selling the 22-year-old. Eddie Howe's side have already contacted Madueke's representatives, according to some media sources.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are still in the market for a striker, and talk over a move for Napoli star Victor Osimhen has refused to go away. The west Londoners had agreed a £35 million transfer for Atletico Madrid's Samu Omorodion, but that collapsed at the eleventh hour due to contractual issues (Sky Sports).

This has resurrected a potential move for Osimhen, with Napoli's interest in Romelu Lukaku closely intertwined, as both clubs contemplate deals which would see the two forwards trade places.

“Osimhen is a possibility that Napoli presented to Chelsea after they already thought of Osimhen at the beginning of the window … they left the conversation because the package was too expensive,” said reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano to CaughtOffside this week.

“But then Napoli presented this opportunity again to Chelsea during talks for Romelu Lukaku. But as I always mentioned, from what I’m hearing, Osimhen doesn’t want to reduce his salary, €11million net per season, and Osimhen doesn’t want to go on loan. This is the idea of the player – only a permanent transfer or loan with obligation. So kind of permanent transfer.

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen

"We will see what happens with Osimhen. But I always had a feeling that this is something for the final weeks or days of the window.”

Amidst all of this, there is also Chelsea's widely reported talks over a deal for Joao Felix.

Chelsea close to agreeing Felix signing after £43m bid

The Blues turned towards Felix after missing out on Omorodion, in a complex transfer domino which could reopen the door for Conor Gallagher to join Atletico Madrid.

According to Atletico insider Rubén Uría, via Sport and Get Football News Spain, Chelsea are now close to an agreement over signing Felix, after Maresca's side submitted a fresh £43 million bid – including add-ons.

This new proposal is apparently closer to what Atletico chiefs ideally want for the 24-year-old, who featured for his native Portugal at the Euros. Felix spent last season on loan at Barcelona, and half of the 22/23 campaign on loan at Chelsea, where he managed four goals in 20 appearances across all competitions.

Five clubs line up move for £200k-p/w Arsenal ace Arteta called "important"

Arsenal could be set to wave goodbye to one of their stars as five clubs circle for his signature, according to a recent report.

Arsenal begin season strongly

Mikel Arteta's side sit fourth in the Premier League over the international break as they look to go one better than their back-to-back runner-up finishes this time around.

Taking maximum points from their opening two games against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa, they held onto a 1-1 draw with Brighton in their most recent outing after Declan Rice was shown a controversial red card with his side leading 1-0 at the time.

Now, they must face Tottenham Hotspur in a fiery north London derby without their record signing, while summer addition Mikel Merino is also sidelined through a shoulder injury, which leaves Arteta short of options in the middle of the pitch.

It is likely to see a pairing of Jorginho and Thomas Partey behind Martin Odegaard, though both Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori have shown the technical ability to play in midfield if required. Another option would be to replace Rice with Kai Havertz, and opt for a much more attacking side with just one "defensive" midfielder on the pitch.

But attention in some quarters remains on transfers despite the UK window shutting amid renewed transfer links surrounding Jorginho and Kieran Tierney. And some are already plotting for the summer of 2025.

Five clubs chase Arsenal man

That comes as CaughtOffside report that five clubs are chasing Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey next summer as they look for a cheap move. Partey was linked with a move away from north London over the summer, but stayed despite reports of Saudi interest.

Quizzed on his midfielder at the end of last season, Arteta dubbed him a "top player" and admitted that Arsenal "need him".

“He’d better have his head here, because we are playing for big things. That’s what we expect. We need him. He’s a top player and important for us, you could see the other day on the pitch the impact that he can have for us.”

Asked about a new contract, Arteta added: “He's our player, he's got one more year's contract and I'm really happy with him.”

But no contract has yet been forthcoming, meaning that Partey is down to the final 12 months of his £200,000 a week deal in north London, a deal that puts him among the club's top earners.

And a report claims that "he’s on the radar of some big names in Europe", with Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona all named as potential destinations alongside Saudi sides Al Hilal and Al Ahli.

Perhaps crucially, it is added that Juventus hold "the most concrete interest" and are ready to offer him a three-year contract in Turin, an offer he is unlikely to see in north London.

Having yet to string together an injury-free campaign during his four years at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal may well decide they are best cutting their losses on the £45m signing, and his departure could allow them to sign a younger profile in his position.

Debut double helps Devon Conway enter Test batters' rankings at No. 77

Devon Conway has made a big entry in the ICC rankings for batters in men’s Test cricket, his 200 in his maiden innings – against England at Lord’s – taking him to No. 77 with a record 447 rating points, the highest for a New Zealand batter on debut and the third-highest ever on debut.Conway, also ranked fourth in the T20I batters’ rankings, became only the seventh batter to make a double-century on Test debut, and two of the men who had reached the milestone before him, Tip Foster and Kyle Mayers, are the only ones to enter the rankings with more points: Foster, whose 287 at Sydney in 1903 remains the highest Test score by a debutant, had 449 (retrospectively), and Mayers 448.Related

Another debutant, England’s Ollie Robinson, also had a good game, returning 4 for 75 and 3 for 26, and that helped him enter the bowlers’ table at 69th place. He was more than handy with the bat too, scoring 42 in the first innings, and that put him in 91st position in the batters’ rankings. Robinson, however, will not be able to add to the good work right away, as he is currently serving a suspension pending an ECB disciplinary hearing into some of his historic tweets.New Zealand, riding on Conway’s double, put up 378 in that first Test against England, and their position was further strengthened by a six-wicket haul from Tim Southee in England’s first dig, which ended at 275. With no play possible on the third day because of rain, England managed to hold on for a draw, but Southee’s haul – his second six-for at Lord’s – pushed him to a career-best No. 3 in the bowlers’ rankings.England’s first innings was headlined by Rory Burns, who scored 132 in close to eight hours, and that moved him up 21 places to 22nd position.

Amorim has blamed United's poor display against Bournemouth on nerves, as his side were thumped 3-0 at Old Trafford. Dean Huijsen opened the scoring with a header from a set-piece, before Justin Kluivert scored a penalty; Antoine Semenyo rounded out the rout just after the hour, and Amorim has now attempted to explain his side's performance.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

United are languishing in 13th in the Premier League table as a result of their defeat, and have won just two of their last five games. Amorim believes that they have to gain more confidence in front of goal if they are to be successful under his management.

  • WHAT AMORIM SAID

Amorim told reporters: "If you look at the game, we were not conceding anything before the first goal, we had opportunities. If we manage to score the first goal then the game should be different. We want to score but we are too nervous. We have to fight this.

"After the penalty, we need to control the game better because we know this situation is really hard. We have to control better this moment.

"We have to focus on the job and not what you feel in the stadium. It's the only way I know how to focus my players. We have to suffer again but we will try to win. We will do it until the end."

United play Wolves on Boxing Day before a clash with Newcastle rounds out the year.

Journalist claims 49ers being pressured by Leeds star thanks to Radrizzani

Leeds United are still feeling the full effect of deals made by Andrea Radrizzani despite him having left the club last summer, it has been reported, with players still relying on his old policies.

Whirlwind two years for Leeds United

Following an ill-fated attempt to utilise the US market on the pitch through the use of Jesse Marsch, Weston McKennie, Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson, Leeds were relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

A month after their drop down to the Championship was confirmed, Radrizzani sold his stake in the club to 49ers enterprises in a deal worth £170m which saw several high profile US sportsmen take up minority stakes.

However, contract decisions made by Radrizzani continued to haunt the Yorkshire side; the likes of Jack Harrison, Marc Roca, Diego Llorente, Max Wober and Rasmus Kristensen were all allowed to leave on loan via clauses in their deals rather than play Championship football, while Tyler Adams had a release clause set at less than the fee paid for him 12 months earlier.

The result was a tricky season for Daniel Farke, in which he almost secured promotion despite the upheaval, and their heavy spending continued to plague them over the summer as they were forced to sacrifice academy talent Archie Gray to comply with financial fair play regulations.

Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter were also handed release clauses in their contracts which were activated by West Ham United and Brighton respectively, leaving Leeds short in attack at the beginning of the season. Now, those questionable deals are having longer-felt effects than expected.

Leeds ace wants special contract clause

That comes amid talk of a new deal for goalkeeper Illan Meslier, who is down to the final two years of his contract at Elland Road as things stand. The Frenchman has been a stalwart between the posts for the Whites since he arrived in Yorkshire in 2020, joining from Lorient.

In that time, he has made close to 200 appearances, and despite some questionable performances he has more than justified Leeds' initial outlay. Now 24-years-old, he is at a crossroads in his career, and former CBS journalist Ben Jacobs has revealed what the hold up on a potential new deal is.

And it once more goes back to the previous regime, with Meslier keen to receive a similar deal to those before him.

“The 49ers enterprise’s approach is very much that their hands have been a bit tied contractually, and anyone that they negotiate with, they want to try and remove that clause", Jacobs explained.

“But of course, from the player’s point of view, if you knew the clause existed for others, or you signed a new long-term deal, and I think this is particularly the case, from what I hear, with Meslier, that the player may want to protect themselves against the fact that if Leeds don’t go up, they’re stuck on a long-term deal, and maybe they feel their development is elsewhere. "

While relegation and non-promotion release clauses are nothing new or specific to Leeds, it does seem as though Radrizanni's heavy-handed use of them could well have some unforseen knock on effects for the 49ers group.

Kane Williamson, the New Zealand captain, has been ruled out of the second Test against England at Edgbaston because of a persistent elbow injury.Williamson had to miss an ODI series against Bangladesh earlier this year because of the same problem, which also caused him to miss the start of the 2021 IPL for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Tom Latham, the regular vice-captain, will lead the team in Williamson’s absence, as he did against Australia at the SCG in January 2020 and West Indies in Wellington in December.Related

Williamson ruled out of Bangladesh ODIs with elbow injury

“It’s not an easy decision for Kane to have to miss a Test, but we think it’s the right one,” Gary Stead, New Zealand’s head coach, said. “He’s had an injection in his elbow to relieve the irritation he’s been experiencing when he bats and a period of rest and rehabilitation will help maximise his recovery.”The injury is not expected to rule him out of the World Test Championship (WTC) final against India, which starts on June 18 at the Ageas Bowl. “The decision has been made very much with the ICC World Test Championship final at Southampton in mind and we are confident he will be ready for that match,” Stead added.”I’m sure he’ll be back [for the final],” Latham said. “From our point of view, it’s a precautionary thing. We’d love him to be available for this game but obviously we’ve got the eye on the final in a week’s time, so for Kane, it’s about giving himself the best opportunity to be fully fit and available for that game. The decision was made for him to rest and get that right for what we have coming up.”He’s fantastic as a captain. It’s well-documented how his personality and his calm nature out in the middle has been vital to this group. He’s very relaxed – doesn’t get too high, doesn’t get too low which I think has been great for this side in recent years. He’s obviously a wonderful leader and we’ve seen that throughout his captaincy career.”Williamson will be replaced in the New Zealand side by Will Young, the top-order batter who won both of his Test caps to date in the home series against West Indies in December.Young prepared for the series by playing four County Championship matches for Durham, scoring hundreds in two of his three most recent innings. He will bat at No. 3, with Latham and Devon Conway continuing to open the batting.”He’s been here a few weeks earlier [than the rest of the squad] and was playing cricket,” Latham said. “He had an opportunity back in our home summer and is coming off runs for Durham which is always nice when you get selected, especially in these conditions, so it’s another exciting opportunity for Will to put his hand up and try to put that performance on the board.”Trent Boult is set to play in the second Test•Pool/AFP via Getty Images

Latham also confirmed that Trent Boult will return to the side, with Mitchell Santner missing through injury, though he was yet to reach a final decision on the side before training on Wednesday afternoon. Ajaz Patel and the uncapped allrounder Rachin Ravindra are the two candidates to replace Santner, while Matt Henry, Doug Bracewell and Jacob Duffy will also be considered as New Zealand look to manage their seamers’ workloads ahead of the WTC final.”It’s a case-by-case situation,” he said. “There is an eye to what we have coming up in a week’s time but on the other hand this is obviously such an important game for us. We’ve got training now and then we’ll have a look at the wicket and have those conversations around what best suits the playing XI tomorrow. We’ve got a big squad to pick from.”While New Zealand’s thinking has clearly been influenced by the proximity of the WTC final, Latham said that the squad were not taking the opportunity to win a series in England for the first time since 1999 for granted.”Beating England is higher on our priority list [than the WTC final],” he said. “We’ve got such a great opportunity to come here and try to play our brand of cricket and put on a performance that we’re proud of. Yes, there is an eye to the final in a week’s time, but our focus is solely on this game and the next five days.”To win away from home is not an easy thing around the world nowadays, and if we can put the performance on the board that we know we’re capable off, fingers crossed that will give us a good chance to be successful after the five days.”Joe Root, England’s captain, acknowledged that Williamson’s absence was a big loss for New Zealand, but insisted that his team would be “respectful” of a side that has demonstrated its depth by qualifying for the WTC final.”He’s a big gun, No.1 in the world,” Root said. “He’s one of those players you spend a lot of time thinking about how you’re going to keep him quiet and get rid of him early. It will be a huge loss for them but we’re also very respectful that New Zealand have a strong squad and are involved in the WTC final because they have strength in depth.”We saw last week a debutant coming in and getting a double hundred. We’ve got to make sure we’re clear on our plans, clued up on whoever replaces him so we can find ways of keeping him quiet and dismissing him.”
