Rangers’ £4.3m gamble is already proving to be better than Raskin

Glasgow Rangers perhaps delivered their finest victory of the season over the weekend as they dismantled an in-form Hearts side who had taken 28 points across their previous ten matches.

Not only did the Light Blues register another confidence-boosting win, but they scored five against the Gorgie outfit without reply, and it piled the pressure on Celtic ahead of their clash against Motherwell on Sunday.

They ended up securing a late win, but the Parkhead side were far from their best and Rangers now have the momentum for the first time in a while.

Much has been said about the recruitment of both teams over the previous few years, but Philippe Clement’s three January signings all scored against Hearts and this injection of freshness might just prove to be the difference in the chase for the Premiership crown.

One incoming in particular has already made such a positive impact that there is no doubt he could become one of the finest players in the squad over the next few years; Mohamed Diomande.

How much Mohamed Diomande cost Rangers

Prior to Christmas, Clement had to endure an injury crisis that deep at the club that he was forced to play Dujon Sterling – a natural full-back – in the heart of the midfield in a major domestic cup final, and it gave him an idea of just how much the squad needed to be bolstered.

Having added Fabio Silva to his side in the winter window, it looked as though the Belgian manager was going to focus on further strengthening his attacking options, but he pulled off a major surprise with a move for Diomande.

The Ivorian midfielder had starred for Danish side FC Nordsjaelland during the first half of the 2023/24 campaign, ranking in the top five among his teammates for big chances created and interceptions per game in the Superliga, and it looked as though Clement had secured a talented young maestro.

The 22-year-old was signed on an initial loan deal with an obligation to buy for a fee in excess of £4.3m, and it looked like a wise move for the Gers.

"I am really pleased to have been able to add Mohamed to our squad, and I am excited to see what he can bring to our team," beamed Clement after the announcement that he had signed.

"In our conversations and what I have seen of him as a player, I believe he will be a real asset to us, not only in what remains of this season, but in the seasons to come also.”

Mohammed Diomande

After just five matches, this statement from the manager is already coming true.

Mohamed Diomande's season in numbers

The midfielder was given just 16 minutes of action in his first two league matches, but between those games, he started in the 2-0 Scottish Cup win over Ayr United at Ibrox and gave the supporters a demonstration of his talents.

This earned him a first Premiership start against St Johnstone last weekend, and he certainly delivered a wonderful display when it was needed most.

Against the Saints, he opened the scoring with a fantastic low drive just before the interval, along with making two key passes, succeeding with 100% of his dribble attempts and winning every single one of the ground duels he contested.

This showed that not only can he be a threat going forward, but he also won't be bullied off the ball easily and can chip in from a defensive viewpoint, which could be crucial in tight matches between now and the end of the season.

Diomande was given another start against Hearts on Saturday, and he scored his second goal in a week to open the scoring once again, and it set the tone for a dominant display from Rangers.

Furthermore, he also won all of his ground duels while completing 86% of his passes, and it was another solid showing from the new boy.

His performances may certainly keep Nicolas Raskin out of the team, but could he even be better than the Belgian gem?

How Diomande compares to Nicolas Raskin

Following the win over Hearts, Rangers Review journalist Chris Jack hailed the signing and said that the call from Clement has certainly “paid off so far” with regard to bringing him to Ibrox last month.

Raskin has plenty of talent, yet fitness has disrupted his campaign so far during 2023/24. He has missed 18 games due to a couple of injury problems and failed to really build any momentum.

Rangers midfielder Nicolas Raskin.

The midfielder has scored just one goal in 20 appearances, while Diomande has two in just five games, demonstrating his positive instant impact.

The Ivorian has also registered more key passes per game (1 vs 0.8) than Raskin and succeeded with more successful dribbles per game (0.8 vs 0.6), showing that he certainly possesses a greater attacking threat than his fellow teammate.

Clement needed a player to come in last month and make an immediate impact, and Diomande has done just that, which could be the boost the Gers need to get over the finishing line.

The onus is now on the manager and his side to continue winning and putting in solid performances to fend off Celtic, while also potentially going far in the Europa League, although this would be a bonus.

Signing Diomande for just over £4.3m is already beginning to look like a major steal and if he continues to maintain his impressive start to life at the club, then he will become one of the first names in the starting XI as the season reaches its crescendo.

Could he be the driving force which sees the Light Blues end a three-year wait for the league title? Only time will tell.

Man Utd made to pay for ditching "amazing" star amid huge Shaw blow

Erik ten Hag must be sick and tired of all the injuries he has had to face and provide solutions for this season at Manchester United.

The Red Devils currently have six first-team players out with injuries, with four of those being defenders.

Manchester United's Lisandro Martinez.

Nevertheless, United's form has yet to be hindered by unavailable players in 2024, with the side unbeaten and winning their last four games in the Premier League.

That said, the most recent injury to Luke Shaw is a huge blow to the side, and it has the potential to be season-defining.

Luke Shaw's latest setback

Throughout his career, Shaw has dealt with numerous setbacks each season, missing an astonishing 210 matches over his nearly ten-year spell at United.

Unfortunately, this season hasn't been any different, with the England international missing 16 games from August to November. The recent game against Aston Villa saw Shaw removed at half-time as a precaution, but the United faithful were relieved to see him return to the starting XI just a week later.

However, the former Southampton man was replaced minutes before the interval away to Luton Town, which is always a worrying sign.

An update this week has confirmed that Shaw is likely to miss the rest of the season, which not only weakens United massively but also causes plenty of problems for the boss, who doesn't have a backup left back available.

United started the season with four left-backs: Tyrell Malacia, who's still injured; Sergio Reguilon, now on loan at Brentford after his short-term loan ended; Diogo Dalot, who isn't able to switch flanks due to the injury of Aaron Wan-Bissaka; and, of course, Alvaro Fernandez.

But he is now left with none other than 16-year-old Harry Amass, who – while seemingly a real talent and potential long-term Shaw successor – isn't perhaps ready to step up just yet.

Alvaro Fernandez was the one that got away

Fernandez has been a product of the United academy since 2020, after being signed from Real Madrid, where he has developed into an "amazing" talent, as per Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig.

The Spaniard really began to shine in the 2022/23 season when he joined Preston North End on loan. During the campaign, he played 39 times in the Championship, picked up four assists, and won the club's Young Player of the Year award in what was an extremely successful loan spell.

Alvaro Fernandez

In the summer, Fernandez joined Granada on loan to continue his development, but he only started five times in La Liga before being recalled in January.

Upon his return, Shaw was still the only left-back available for selection, and Malacia was on his road to recovery, but given the former's lack of reliability, it's difficult to see how Ten Hag came to the conclusion to send the youngster out on loan to Benfica for the rest of the campaign, where he has made six appearances.

With Victor Lindelof now becoming the first choice left back despite being a more natural centre half, United will undoubtedly be caught out down that flank, with Ten Hag left to regret his decision to let the 20-year-old go while counting down the minutes till Malacia or Wan-Bissaka's return.

Rodgers loves him: "World-class" player could be tempted to sign for Celtic

One major Celtic transfer target could now be open to moving to Parkhead, according to a new transfer update this week.

Celtic transfer rumours

The Hoops have got back to winning ways in recent weeks following a dip in Scottish Premiership form, with a late win at Motherwell on the weekend followed up by a 7-1 hammering of Dundee on Wednesday evening. Brendan Rodgers’ side still trail rivals Rangers at the top of the table, with the title race looking set to go down to the wire.

Celtic looking to complete “huge” transfer this summer

This comes after a recent £120m boost.

ByHenry Jackson Feb 25, 2024

Despite Rodgers’ focus being on matters on the pitch, it looks as if Celtic chefs already have one eye on the transfer market. Recent reports have even suggested that the Hoops could break their transfer record on one signing this summer, with the funds seemingly ready.

Loanee Adam Idah is believed to be open to a permanent Celtic transfer, whereas Charlton Athletic youngster Patrick Casey is also on the radar.

However, the club’s top target appears to be a new goalkeeper, with Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher of real interest. Celtic “would love” to sign the Reds ‘keeper, although previous reports said a deal could be hard to do regarding persuading him to head to Scotland.

Kelleher to Celtic update

Now, in a new update from HITC, Kelleher could be tempted to sign for Celtic due to ‘the prospect of regular first-team football north of the border’. They say that Kelleher is very high on Rodgers' wishlist, with the manager seemingly a big fan, but a deal may cost as much as £15m.

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

With Joe Hart set to retire at the end of the season, a new first-choice shot-stopper needs to come in, and the club have also watched Ugurcan Cakir of Trabzonspor, as per the report.

Kelleher has been second choice to Allison at Anfield in recent years but has played regularly in domestic cup competitions under Jurgen Klopp. He starred for the Reds against Chelsea in the EL Cup final on Sunday, winning his sixth major honour for Liverpool in the process.

Kelleher has also come in for praise from teammate Virgil van Dijk, who said on Sunday: “He should have got it (player of the match). I’m probably one of his biggest fans, I think.

“I have always said he is world class and he stepped up today, again. It’s good to see. He’s a good boy, good goalkeeper and that’s what we need at a club like Liverpool.”

Meanwhile, Klopp also waxed lyrical over Kelleher on the weekend, saying: "Caoimh was unbelievable. Such a mature performance. I say it often: we have the best goalkeeper in the world and the best Number two in the world. I’m so happy for him. Top game."

Therefore, knowing Kelleher could now be tempted to join Celtic is a boost for the Hoops, and a deal could be one to watch over the coming months.

Liverpool’s "exceptional" teen may be a bigger talent than Bradley

Liverpool are firing on all cylinders this season (recent dour defeat against Arsenal notwithstanding) and Jurgen Klopp will be delighted with his side's revival after the 2022/23 campaign.

Of course, the esteemed German is stepping down from his managerial position come summer but he is leaving the squad in a fine position to continue his work, with a high-class crop of seniors bolstered by a flow of youth talent.

Jurgen-Klopp of Liverpool

While Liverpool have not boasted the most continuous belt of talent from the formative fold over the years, there has been a discernible increase since Klopp's arrival, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott a few of the best-known.

The likes of Jarell Quansah and Conor Bradley have emerged this season to underpin this new level of production that stems from the transformative effect Klopp way back when, and the latest might have arrived in Trey Nyoni, who could bloom into one of the very best.

Trey Nyoni: profiled

Liverpool signed Nyon, born in 2007, from Leicester City last summer and while he is only 16, the attacking midfielder has made quite the impression on Merseyside.

Scoring three goals and supplying one assist from just four matches in the U18 Premier League, Nyoni has showcased his qualities in age-belying fashion and has even been named on the bench for the first team on five occasions, a remarkable feat for one so young.

Lauded for his "exceptional" displays by reporter Neil Jones, Nyoni is both elegant and imposing from his No. 8 role and boasts athleticism that allows him to beat his marker with ease.

An innate eye for goal only adds depth to a far-reaching skill set that could allow him to step up as the dream Dominik Szoboszlai successor in the future, the Hungarian signed from RB Leipzig for £60m last summer.

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai.

Szoboszlai has posted five goals and four assists for Liverpool so far and is an immense and technically brilliant attacking midfielder, ranking among the top 3% of positional peers for shot-creating actions, the top 6% for progressive carries, the top 8% for successful take-ons and the top 11% for blocks per 90, as per FBref.

Nyoni could emulate such skills down the line and given the potential at his feet, he might even prove to be a bigger talent than the 20-year-old Bradley.

A bigger talent than Bradley

The Premier League has a new sensation in Bradley, blitzing into gear last month and clinching direct contributions at an astounding rate: one goal and five assists from his past four matches in all competitions.

The right-back stepped up with Alexander-Arnold sidelined for most of the month and looks set to remain a valuable member of Liverpool's squad for years to come, having built on earning Player of the Season on loan with Bolton Wanderers in League One last year.

His blend of attacking and defensive qualities make him a tailor-made fit for Premier League football and there is no reason why he cannot rise to a prominent standing in Liverpool's squad.

Likewise, Nyoni has the natural ability to succeed for the Reds and given his precocious beginnings, not even 17 until the summer, he could surpass the Northern Ireland international and become one of Europe's major players down the line.

“Impossible” – Phil Hay comment reveals act of genius from Leeds and Farke

For Championship promotion-chasers Leeds United, the emergence of Archie Gray has without doubt been one of the stories of the season. Gray has started 30 out of 34 games under Daniel Farke in the league this season, including Friday's memorable comeback win over the leaders.

Only three Leeds players – Ethan Ampadu (3,060), Islan Meslier (2,843) and Georginio Rutter (2,788) – have played more second-tier minutes for the club than Gray's 2,707, and unsurprisingly, he leads the way for all teenagers in the division. His nearest challenger is Sunderland's Jobe Bellingham, and he's a considerable way back on 2,471.

Archie Gray for Leeds United.

While Gray broke through as a midfielder, he's mostly played as a right-back this season, lining up there 22 times in all competitions, including in the dramatic win against Leicester on Friday. Leeds had interestingly signed a potential competitor on the final day of the winter transfer window in the form of Burnley's Connor Roberts, who arrived on loan until the end of the season, and the Welshman announced himself in the best way possible against the Foxes, scoring off the bench after replacing Junior Firpo.

Now, some comments from Hay in the build-up to the match have emerged, and it looks like the 49ers ownership group – together with the manager – got their January decision making just about spot on.

Roberts forcing Gray to get "even better" – Hay

Speaking on The Square Ball Podcast before Friday's mania, The Athletic's Phil Hay said that people at the club were conscious of ensuring that Gray's development wasn't obstructed by any January addition. Signing a versatile veteran who can support the teenager rather than compete with him was the objective, and based on what happened on Friday night, they pulled it off to perfection.

“It was one of those things when they were looking for a right-back in January, I remember somebody at the club saying this, they were very conscious of wanting a good right-back, and they got Connor Roberts who is very good, but not wanting that to immediately compromise Gray’s minutes, they still wanted Gray to be in the team and him to be playing.

“Actually if anything, he’s got better since Roberts came in and made it impossible for Farke, it would have to be a fitness thing, to get Roberts into the team.”

Leeds 3-1 Leicester proves 49ers' transfer genius

Farke proved the owners' decision to target experienced support for Gray was an act of genius with what he did on Friday, bringing on the fresh legs of Roberts for Firpo, who was struggling, and shifting Gray over to the other flank.

The two combined to flip the game on its head, and Gray, who also provided an assist in the 4-0 win over Swansea City, has been phenomenal since Roberts arrived, showing precision in possession, knowing when to take risks and winning the vast majority of his individual battles.

In the end, it may be looked back on as the transfer that pushed Leeds on to become genuine challengers to what previously looked like a stroll to the title for the Foxes. With Roberts now fit and firing, the manager is free to use Gray exactly if, when and how he chooses, rather than being forced to run him into the ground week in week out at right-back only.

Ricardo Vasconcelos has signed a new five-year contract with Northamptonshire.Johannesburg-born opener Vasconcelos still had two years remaining on his previous contract but has penned the new deal to secure his place at Wantage Road until the end of the 2024 season.”It was an easy decision for me to stay here.” said Vasconcelos “Northants took a chance on me and picked me out of South Africa, so it was a no brainer for me to be loyal to the club that gave me a chance to live my dream.”Vasconcelos, 21, first appeared for Northamptonshire as a non-overseas player – he has a Portuguese passport – against Pakistan in 2018 before making his County Championship debut against Leicestershire later that year. He was on track for a thousand-run Championship season before an ankle injury ended his campaign early. At the time, he had amassed 750 runs at an average of 46.87 for the season.”The club has really shown ambition this year with some top-class overseas signings so hopefully that ambition pays off and we can get promoted and continue to improve in Div One next year.” Vasconcelos said.”The injury is coming along well, I’ve started walking again now so this is where the hard work starts, I guess, but I’m prepared to put in the work and come back stronger and fitter than ever for what hopefully will be a really good season for us in Division One next year.”I’ve been working hard to get back fit and I’ll be playing some club cricket in South Africa over the winter to make sure I’ve got some cricket under my belt before the start of the new season.”Northamptonshire are third on the County Championship Division Two table with three rounds remaining.

Morris' journey with Columbus Crew began in 2017 when he joined the Crew Academy. His talent and hard work quickly earned him a spot on the senior team. The Florida native signed a homegrown contract with Columbus in 2020, debuting impressively in a 4-0 victory over FC Cincinnati. During his rookie season, Morris appeared in 10 games, starting twice under former head coach Caleb Porter. Notably, he became the youngest player in MLS history to start in an MLS Cup final at just 19 years and 27 days old. Over his tenure with Columbus, Morris made 83 regular-season MLS appearances, including 67 starts, and contributed significantly with six goals and 14 assists.

Contact made: Man Utd eyeing move for "special" manager to replace Ten Hag

Manchester United have already made contact with a “special” manager to possibly replace Erik ten Hag this summer, according to an update from one journalist.

Erik ten Hag’s Man Utd future

The Red Devils recorded a much-needed FA Cup victory over Nottingham Forest on Wednesday evening to set up a mouth-watering quarterfinal clash at Old Trafford against rivals Liverpool. The competition is United’s last chance of silverware in what has been a disappointing second season under Ten Hag, who has lost 15 games in 2023/24.

Man Utd have made approach for £26m Spurs target who Jose Mourinho loves

ByDavid Comerford Feb 27, 2024

Finishing in the top four of the Premier League is still possible, however, it took a blow on the weekend following a late defeat to Fulham, which has resulted in plenty of speculation over Ten Hag’s future.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is already making wholesale changes off the pitch at Old Trafford and there have been rumours of a managerial switch in the coming months, with the new investor "not completely sold" on Ten Hag, according to The Manchester Evening News.

Zinedine Zidane and Julian Nagelsmann are thought to be options alongside Brighton & Hove Albion’s Roberto de Zerbi and Bayern Munich’s Thomas Tuchel, however, another name is now emerging.

Man Utd have already contacted Antonio Conte

According to journalist Rudy Galetti on Wednesday, Man United appear to have a three-man shortlist to possibly replace Ten Hag at the end of the season. Tuchel and De Zerbi are mentioned alongside former Tottenham manager Antonio Conte, with contact already made in recent months.

Conte has been out of work for almost 12 months now after leaving Spurs. The Italian, who plays a 3-4-3 system, was hailed by a number of Tottenham players during his time in north London, with midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg saying:

antonio-conte-transfer-gossip-tottenham-hotspur-romelu-lukaku-inter-milan-postecoglou

“Antonio is a special coach, with a special way of doing things, with a very high level of performing. There is always a time of adaptation, a time of understanding the sports side and also the personal side, and everything is coming together well.”

Meanwhile, defender Eric Dier said: “It’s special. When he talks to you, you can tell straight away his passion for football and intensity. The way he feels, you can’t help but feed off it, it’s energising. Every time he speaks, there’s such intent in it.”

This isn’t the first time Conte has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, though, with the manager an option for the Red Devils before appointing Ralf Rangnick back in 2021. Gary Neville didn’t think Conte was the right fit for United back then, so it would be interesting to see his view on a possible move now, should Ten Hag depart.
