New target: Leeds want to sign aerial monster with 10 international goals

In addition to pursuing a right-back, with a move for Burnley's Connor Roberts said to be practically done, Leeds United and Daniel Farke are also going after a centre-half on transfer deadline day. The Whites have been pushing for Ben Godfrey, but they saw their first loan offer for the Englishman rejected, and that may have led them to consider some alternatives.

Ben Godfrey for Everton against Burnley.

Alongside Sheffield United, Leeds made an approach for Bournemouth's Chris Mepham, but they were told that he's unavailable for transfer during this window. Elsewhere, the two Yorkshire rivals have been showing interest in Nottingham Forest's Joe Worrall, but it's unclear if the Premier League side's £6m valuation will put them off.

And now, both teams are in the frame for a third central defensive target, with one looking to stave off relegation and the other battling for promotion from the Championship.

Leeds and Sheffield Utd now set sights on Souttar

According to Football Insider, Leeds are interested in signing Harry Souttar in a "last-gasp" move. Farke has been keen to strengthen the heart of his defence throughout the window and views Souttar as an acceptable plan-b after the failed Godfrey bid.

Chris Wilder and Sheffield United have already made contact with Leicester over a possible transfer, but they can now expect to face competition from Leeds as the deadline nears.

Aerial monster Souttar beat Van Dijk

It was only a year ago that Leicester were paying an initial £15m, potentially rising to £20m with add-ons, to sign Souttar from Stoke City. He would make 12 Premier League appearances as they unsuccessfully tried to stave off relegation, but it appears that Enzo Maresca, appointed as the manager in the summer, isn't especially keen on the Australian.

He's only started one of the Foxes' 29 second-tier games so far, watching on from the sidelines for 14 full matches. With an 11-point cushion to the play-off places, Leicester don't need to worry too much about strengthening the sides below them.

Leeds could forget Manuel Benson by signing another Burnley star

When assessing Souttar, who'd previously played more than 60 games in the Championship at Stoke, the attribute that stands out is definitely his aerial ability. As you can see in the table below, he won a higher proportion of his headed battles (a whopping 86.4%) than any other player who contested a meaningful number in last season's Premier League. No wonder pundit Pat Nevin says it's as if he has a "magnet in his head".

Souttar is currently away at the Asian Cup with Australia, and scored in their 4-0 win over Indonesia in Tuesday's round of 16 tie to reach double figures for his country in just 21 caps. The Socceroos play South Korea in the quarterfinals on Friday, but Leeds and Sheffield United appear confident that won't affect his availability.

Boehly now already eyeing Chelsea deal for "dominant" defender over Man Utd

In what it a rarity these days, Chelsea didn't spend a single penny in the January transfer window, with their late focus instead on showing Armando Broja the exit door, allowing the young forward to leave on loan to Fulham for the rest of the season. When the summer transfer window arrives, however, the Blues are seemingly ready to steal the headlines once more.

Chelsea transfer news

After Chelsea made a late U-turn on the future of Broja, the forward completed a move to London rivals Fulham for a reported loan fee of £4m. The former Southampton loanee expressed his delight over the move, saying: “It feels amazing. I’m really happy to be here and I can’t wait to get started, meet the players and manager and play for the fans.

"The fans always play a big role and I can’t wait to go to Craven Cottage and meet them all. I’m going to work hard for the team and create a real bond. I’m really honoured and excited to be here.”

The Blues have now reportedly turned their attention to incomings and a potential defensive boost in the summer transfer window. According to reports in Spain, Todd Boehly and Chelsea are eyeing a move for Giorgio Scalvini from Atalanta this summer ahead of Premier League rivals Manchester United and Manchester City.

It remains to be seen just how much the Serie A club demand for the 19-year-old defender, but with his current contract not expiring until 2028, Atalanta are certainly in strong position to negotiate. Chelsea may need to sell before they can buy to comply with FFP rules too, according to football finance expert Stefan Borson.

Borson told talkSPORT: “In my mind, there’s certainly trouble on the horizon, and they will certainly fail FFP for the current season. Unless – and it seems to be very unlikely – that by June 30 this year they sell well over £100m of players. But the window they can now do that is going to be very small, because the season is going to finish and we’ve got the Euros.

"So if you look at someone like Gallagher, he’s going to be in the Euros from June 14, so if they want to ship him before June 30, they’ve got to move very quickly. And again, the likely buyers are going to know that Chelsea need to sell players.”

"Dominant" Scalvini can replace Silva

At 39-years-old, the curtain is coming down on Thiago Silva's illustrious career, leaving Chelsea in need of a replacement. And sticking to Boehly's trend of securing players for the future, Scalvini could be the perfect option. When compared to Silva, Scalvini's stats certainly represent a player who is capable of stepping into the Premier League next season.

Tottenham make contact to sign World Cup defender who Ange wanted at Celtic

Tottenham have apparently made contact over signing an "excellent" World Cup player who Ange Postecoglou has historically chased.

Spurs seal much-needed centre-back signing

Last week, Spurs put pen to paper on a £25 million deal to sign defender Radu Dragusin from Genoa – which gave the club a much-needed boost for the second half of 2023/2024.

The north Londoners were starved of alternative options to Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, as evident when the pair were unavailable for large periods before January.

Van de Ven has just returned from the hamstring injury which kept him sidelined from early November, while Romero was sporadically absent due to suspensions and injuries of his own.

Postecoglou was forced to play a makeshift pairing of Emerson Royal and Ben Davies at points, but history repeating itself looks far less likely in that respect with Dragusin's arrival at the club.

The Romanian made his debut off the bench in a 2-2 draw with Man United at Old Trafford last weekend, with Postecoglou explaining exactly why Spurs signed Dragusin beforehand.

"We spoke to as many people about him as possible and had him scouted again and I’ve been following him since we highlighted him," said Postecoglou.

"In my mind once we got down to the real detail, I thought he was the best option for us. Before the window opened we made the decision that Radu would be our number one priority. I like his defensive attributes, his physical attributes, I there's still a lot of growth in him.

"A lot of improvement in him. He's only 21, only had one year in Serie A, not even a full year and he fits the profile of the kind of players we want here."

However, despite Dragusin coming to north London, it is believed Postecoglou is planning to overhaul his defence further this year. It is believed Spurs have an interest in Napoli star Leo Ostigard, and Tottenham have also been linked with a move for Bologna star Riccardo Calafiori.

Now, as per Sky Sports Germany, another centre-back in Borussia Monchengladbach's Ko Itakura has admirers at N17.

Tottenham put out feelers for Itakura

According to the broadcaster, Tottenham have put out feelers over signing Itakura in 2024, with both Postecoglou's side and Liverpool "vying" for the Japan international.

Itakura, who featured at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, was actually chased by Postecoglou during his time at Celtic. The 26-year-old has only made seven Bundesliga appearances this season due to injury, but that hasn't deterred Tottenham who are said to be fans.

Itakura has also been called an "excellent" addition to the Gladbach defence by members of the press, since his arrival at the club in 2022 from Man City.

'You're pissed you're not playing' – Gio Reyna addresses 2022 World Cup snubs by USMNT boss Gregg Berhalter as he reflects on 'dream come true'

The Borussia Dortmund man played just over 50 minutes overall in the United States' four World Cup games in Qatar in 2022 – which then led him to butt heads with head coach Gregg Berhalter during and after the competition. While the details behind that are lengthy and complicated, the 21-year-old seems to be in a much better place when reflecting on that tournament more than 18 months ago.

When asked if the 2022 World Cup was fun, he told : "Uummm… it's one of those things, when you're in the moment, you wish you're playing, you're pissed you're not playing.

“I was 19 and I did get to play in a World Cup. Looking back, when my career is done — it's really a dream come true. And it was still a good experience with a good group of guys. So, it was awesome.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

In December 2022, Berhalter said – in an off-the-record interview that got leaked – an anonymous US player was "not meeting the expectations on and off the field" at the World Cup. While Reyna was not specifically called out, he later apologised for letting his "emotions" get the best of him, but was "disappointed" at public revelations about his alleged lack of effort at the World Cup. Fast-forward to the present, however, and it appears to be water under the bridge – with Reyna and Berhalter in a good spot together.

Rodgers could land lethal Kuhn partner in Celtic swoop for £3m marksman

Celtic did not enjoy a perfect first half of the season under Brendan Rodgers, who replaced Ange Postecoglou last summer, as they struggled in Europe and stuttered domestically.

The Scottish giants were knocked out of the League Cup by Kilmarnock in August and that put to an end any hope of replicating the domestic treble they achieved last term.

Rodgers currently has the side sitting top of the Scottish Premiership table with 17 wins from 22 matches and they are eight points clear of second place.

However, as you can see in the table above, their closest rivals have the opportunity to cut the gap to just two points if they win their games in hand.

The Hoops, who were knocked out of Europe as they finished bottom of their Champions League group, have decided that they needed to bolster their squad this month.

Celtic's attempts to improve the team in January

Rodgers has already made his first signing of the window with the addition of German winger Nicolas Kuhn from Rapid Wien on a permanent deal.

The former Ajax and Bayern Munich starlet arrived earlier this month for a reported fee of £3m to bolster the head coach's options on the flanks.

However, that does not look likely to be the end of the club's business this month as the Hoops boss is reportedly keen on up to three more signings.

Football Insider recently reported that the Northern Irish tactician has his eyes on a left-back, a goalkeeper, and a centre-forward to improve his playing squad.

Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland.

One striker who has been linked with a move to Parkhead in January is Hearts marksman Lawrence Shankland as journalist Graeme Bailey claimed that the club are considering a swoop for him.

However, the accompanying report from HITC claimed that the Scottish giants may face Premier League competition for his signature as the likes of Burnley, Sheffield United, Everton, and Crystal Palace are also keeping tabs on the impressive finisher.

Football Insider claimed that fellow Premiership side Rangers are also interested in a deal for the attacker but are likely to be priced out of a move for him until the end of the season.

Their report stated that the Jam Tarts are set to demand a fee of at least £3m for the attacker, which has taken the Light Blues out of the race for now.

It, however, remains to be seen whether or not Celtic are prepared to splash out £3m on the Scotland international before the end of the current window.

If Rodgers does win the race for his signature ahead of the second half of the 2023/24 campaign then he could land a lethal partner for Kuhn in the final third.

Nicolas Kuhn's creative brilliance

The Hoops snapped up the impressive forward off the back of an excellent first half of the season with Rapid Wien in the Austrian Bundesliga.

Kuhn is finally starting to showcase his quality at first-team level this term after he initially struggled to translate his superb academy form over to senior football.

As you can see in the table above, the left-footed whiz excelled at various top clubs but did not make the breakthrough in the first-team for any of them.

He then ended up at Rapid Wien in Austria and displayed his creative brilliance in the Bundesliga during the first half of this season, which led to a move to Parkhead.

Kuhn started 16 matches in the Austrian top-flight and contributed with five assists, 11 'big chances' created, and 1.8 key passes per game for his side.

The 24-year-old ace, who also scored two goals, averaged one 'big chance' created every 1.45 matches for Wien. Meanwhile, Luis Palma (11 in 17) has created one every 1.55 outings and Matt O'Riley (six in 21) has produced one every 3.5 games in the Premiership.

This suggests that Kuhn could be an outstanding creator during the second half of the season for Celtic if he can translate his performances over to the Scottish top-flight.

The stats that show why Shankland could thrive alongside Kuhn

Rodgers could provide the German wizard with a prolific centre-forward who has the quality to make the most of the big chances he can create by snapping up Shankland from Hearts for £3m.

He is currently the top scorer in the Scottish Premiership with 13 strikes to his name for the Jam Tarts – three more than O'Riley in second place.

Hearts attacker Lawrence Shankland.

The Scotland international has racked up 13 goals in 21 league outings for his club, and seven of those goals have come in his last six outings.

Shankland's finishing has been particularly impressive as the 28-year-old forward has only missed five 'big chances' and scored 13 goals from an Expected Goals of just 9.05.

His outstanding efficiency in front of goal is not a flash in the pan, either, as the Scottish marksman also scored 24 goals from an xG of 15.93 in the division during the 2022/23 campaign.

This means that the impressive Celtic target, whose finishing was described as "unbelievable" by pundit Kris Boyd, has plundered 37 goals from an xG of 24.98 for Hearts in the Premiership since the start of last season.

Therefore, Shankland is a phenomenal finisher who does not waste many opportunities to find the back of the net, which is illustrated by his outstanding record in front of goal over the last 18 months.

Now, imagine how many goals the £3m-rated whiz would score with the likes of Kuhn, Palma, and O'Riley creating 'big chances' on a regular basis for the prolific striker.

He could thrive at Parkhead with the service that the club's creative wizards can provide, which is why the Hearts captain could be a lethal partner for Kuhn in the final third.

Rodgers could create a new dynamic duo at the top end of the pitch by bringing Shankland in as his second signing after the German forward.

Stuart Broad's bowling advice keeps Jackson Bird on a wire

Fast bowler has all the attributes for English conditions, but lessons learnt from previous trips may stand him in good stead

Daniel Brettig18-Jul-2019Watch Jackson Bird bowl in Australia and most swiftly reach a similar conclusion: perfect for England. Tall, accurate and generating bounce and movement both ways, he has long been among the most consistent performers down under, as demonstrated by his recurring presence around the fringes of the Test team in a decidedly strong era for pacemen.Take Bird some 20 hours’ flying time to the other side of the world, however, and his seemingly well-grooved skills have tended to desert him. He struggled for impact in his one Test here, at Durham in 2013, and two county stints in 2015 and 2016 at Hampshire and Nottinghamshire tallied 34 wickets in 11 games at an average near enough to 40, while also giving up more than 3.5 runs per over.Nevertheless, Bird has continued to front up, earning a berth on the Australia A tour and thus a chance at Ashes selection by hoarding 50 wickets at 22.22 for Tasmania in 2018-19, after 37 at 21.81 the previous summer. Ahead of the internal trial match between two Australian sides that will provide the selectors with the final information they need to cut 25 players down to 16, Bird knows he is duelling for, at best, one remaining bowling spot with the likes of Peter Siddle, Chris Tremain and Michael Neser. When he takes the Dukes ball in Southampton, he will do so with the words of no less a Dukes exponent than Stuart Broad in his mind – they are worth recounting for all of Australia’s Ashes aspirants. “I’m probably not trying to swing the ball as much as I used to,” Bird said. “I’ve fallen into the trap over here a couple of times when I’ve come and played county cricket as well, to just focusing on swinging the ball rather than bowling the right length and I think that’s what’s cost me really.”I’ve spoken to a lot of guys that have played cricket over here, in either Ashes or guys I’ve played with, guys like Stuart Broad and stuff like that, and they just say you’ve got to bowl the right length that’s going to hit the top of the stumps or hit the knee roll [on the pad] and if the conditions suit it will swing anyway.”That’s all I’m trying to focus on doing and I think in the spells where I’ve bowled a bit full or been too expensive it is probably for that reason, so the spells that I’ve bowled well in I’ve been hitting the wicket and hitting the top of the stumps – it’s a good blueprint going forward.”The memories Bird has accumulated from numerous England trips should give him a decent chance of squeezing into the Ashes squad, although he was realistic about the fact that while many of the group assembling in Southampton on Thursday were already nailed on, he was very much in the group on the edge of things.

It might be a team rule, can’t fraternise with the opposition! It’ll be pretty funny I reckon, especially after a couple of weeks on tourJackson Bird on the team dynamics for Australia’s inter-squad match

“I assume there’s probably only one spot available, if that, for the fast bowlers, so I’m enjoying my time over here,” Bird said. “We’ve got a good bunch of guys that have had a good couple of weeks in this Aussie A stuff and we’re all looking forward to getting down to Hampshire.”I felt pretty good, I think I’ve improved from Arundel last week, so made a couple of good strides over the last week. I probably went for a couple of runs in my first spell but I thought I brought that back nicely and bowled a good spell in the middle of the day and, yeah, was pretty happy with the hit-out.”Anytime you come up against a Lions team, it’s a good hit-out, and this game was no different. There were a couple of guys in their Test squad against Ireland that were playing, so it’s good to bowl to a few of their batters who are on the fringe as well, in case they do get picked in the Test squad and you do play against them, at least you’ve got a bit of experience against them. You can never take that too lightly.”Frustration at Cricket Australia over the quality of county opposition rolled out for warm-up games on previous Ashes tours has manifested itself in the pitting of the two Australian sides against one another in Southampton next week. While the selection of the teams is a mystery, Bird revealed that the groups will be training separately, a likely necessity due to the sheer size of the group otherwise.”We don’t really know what the teams are going to be and how they’re going to pick the teams so that’ll be interesting to see what happens there in the next couple of days,” Bird said. “I think we’ve got a bit of an idea of what’s going to happen, I think were training separately and stuff like that, so we’ll at least try and make this game as competitive as possible.”It’s the only red ball hit-out for a couple of the guys that have been playing in the World Cup. I think those games can drag on a bit if they’re not taken too seriously so hopefully it’s 100% the whole time.”And with all players and staff crammed into the one hotel, that could make for some intriguing dynamics at the breakfast bar, among other places. “It might be a team rule, can’t fraternise with the opposition!” Bird joked. “It’ll be pretty funny I reckon, especially after a couple of weeks on tour, there’s going to be a few blokes who’ll cop it from other blokes I reckon, airing a bit of their grievances over the tour. It’ll be good fun.”

"24 hours" – Medical update as Aston Villa agree fee for Morgan Rogers

Middlesbrough forward Morgan Rogers has been the top priority for Aston Villa and their manager Unai Emery this month, and while the player himself has expressed excitement at the idea of making the move, it's descended into something of a saga.

Morgan Rogers in action against Aston Villa.

On Monday, it emerged that Villa had been unsuccessful with a third offer for the winger as Boro held firm in their asking price. Michael Carrick's side communicated their demands at the outset and have simply been waiting for the Premier League club to meet them. Rogers had told the club he wanted the transfer, but there was still "work to do", more than a week on from the previous bid. At long last, though, it appears a decisive breakthrough has been made.

Villa finally reach Rogers agreement

Now, according to journalist Keith Downie at Sky Sports, Villa have agreed a fee to sign Rogers from Middlesbrough. It will be a package worth up to £16m when add-ons are included, making him the second-most expensive Premier League addition of the month behind Spurs' Radu Dragusin (£27m).

Boro will regard this as "very good business", especially given that they only paid £1m to sign him last summer, but the main emotion for Villa will be relief. Rogers is now due to undergo a medical "in [the] next 24 hours" with a view to completing the transfer before Thursday's deadline.

Villa complete perfect window but concerns linger

Assuming all goes to plan from here, Emery will be delighted with what Villa have done this month, because they've addressed both of the positions where he felt the squad was light. The manager wanted another right-back to compete with Matty Cash, and Red Star Belgrade's Kosta Nedeljkovic will be able to do that when he arrives in the summer.

The late transfer Aston Villa could seal to replace Jacob Ramsey

Unai Emery is eyeing up a move for a new attacker before the deadline.

ByTom Lever Jan 30, 2024

He was also after another body on the flanks after walking away from a summer move for Jack Harrison, and Rogers will fit that bill while also offering him an additional central option too. The only concern for Villa is that they've now committed to another considerable outlay when they were already coming under increasing pressure to balance the books.

Villa will need to sell players before the end of June to comply with the league's Profit and Sustainability Rules, and that could see them lose Jacob Ramsey, although Emery regards an exit for Jhon Duran as preferable. We'll see whether the signing of Rogers prompts any late departures, or whether Villa wait until the summer to address the issue.
