Pujara 'wants it more than any one of us' – Unadkat

In the Ranji final for the third time in seven seasons, Saurashtra are eager to win the title but not afraid of losing it, says their captain

Karthik Krishnaswamy in Bengaluru28-Jan-2019When Prerak Mankad drove Ronit More through mid-off and sealed Saurashtra’s place in the Ranji Trophy final, the Saurashtra dressing room broke into a victory chant.”Kagiso!” yelled a hoarse voice. “Rabada!” the others chorused. This happened some five times. It was an odd moment to celebrate the South Africa fast bowler.”No logic of course, it doesn’t make sense at all,” said Jaydev Unadkat, Saurashtra’s captain, when asked about it. “It’s something we picked up from the Bombay [Mumbai] crowd when we played Bombay. Some of them were shouting that way, just to boost their players maybe.”The fun-loving guys we have in our team, they picked it up for us and made a routine that whenever we won after that game, they’ve shouted like that. It’s just one of those fun moments we have after winning a game.”As the chant echoed around the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, a man who had faced 139 balls from Rabada in Test cricket, without being dismissed, shook hands with the defeated Karnataka players.ALSO READ: Synchronised clapping – the ‘punch’ that keeps Saurashtra goingIn the quarter-final, he had made an unbeaten 67 in a fourth-innings chase of 372. Now he had followed it up with an unbeaten 131 in a fourth-innings chase of 279. Saurashtra couldn’t have hoped for a bigger contribution from Cheteshwar Pujara when he joined them for the Ranji Trophy knockouts, having just returned home from a triumphant tour of Australia.

Doesn’t really matter what game, what level he’s playing, he just wants to be out there and win it for the teamJAYDEV UNADKAT ON CHETESHWAR PUJARA

According to Unadkat, however, Pujara’s contributions have extended far beyond just the runs he’s scored.”Can’t really have anyone better than him to have that influence,” Unadkat said. “The way he approached this game, or even the last game, he wants it more than any one of us.”That’s one thing I really love about him. Doesn’t really matter what game, what level he’s playing, he just wants to be out there and win it for the team. It’s really showing at the moment how determined he is to win it for Saurashtra. Helping me in the field, helping other batsmen on how to approach the game, not just in the middle but out of the game as well.”The guys have been really fortunate to have him in the side. He has been guiding the batsmen in the UP [Uttar Pradesh] game as well, that was one game where we got the confidence and it reflected in this game.”Even though we were 23 for 3, no one actually was out of belief that we can win this game, it was down to him. The character that he has, the image that he has. We’re lucky to have him in the team for sure.”Cheteshwar Pujara during a practice session•Ekana Cricket Media/ Randhir DevHaving come together after three wickets had fallen quickly, Pujara and Sheldon Jackson put on 214 for the fourth wicket to take the game away from Karnataka. They may or may not have had some help from an umpiring error when Pujara pushed at a Vinay Kumar outswinger on 34. There was a sound as ball passed bat – though on replays, without the aid of HotSpot or UltraEdge, it was difficult to say conclusively that the sound was the result of an edge – and umpire Saiyed Khaled turned down Karnataka’s appeal.A section of the 1000-plus-strong crowd at the Chinnaswamy began booing Pujara, and greeted him with chants of “cheater, cheater” when he walked off the field at the session breaks and at stumps on day four.Unadkat felt there had been a few debatable decisions through the match, going against both teams, but he sympathised with the umpires. He also felt Karnataka had let the contentious decisions affect them while Saurashtra hadn’t.”I think anyone can have a tough game. The ball was moving a lot, deviating from the wicket,” he said. “I’d just say that [the umpiring] has been neutral for sure… [Karnataka] thought it was out, we thought it was not out. There were a couple of other decisions as well, which went against us, and we didn’t really it take in our mind and play the game, which I think they did.”I’m really happy, don’t want to take any credit away from how we played this game, how we fought after being 23 for 3, and playing the way Cheteshwar and Sheldon played.”Even the second innings, when we bowled, it was one of those innings which I felt was really absorbing. We were all drained out after that third day of play. To be playing that kind of cricket against a side as good as Karnataka is what really matters to me rather than anything else in this game, and I wouldn’t want to focus on anything else.”Saurashtra will face defending champions Vidarbha in the final•Ekana Cricket Media/ Randhir DevThe chase of 372 against Uttar Pradesh in the quarter-final, Unadkat said, had filled Saurashtra with immense self-belief.”We cannot have better confidence than what we have at the moment,” he said. “Like you say, to actually do it twice (chase down testing targets) is down to how determined the guys are to win the title this year.”We spoke about it during the league phase and during the first knockout game as well. I kept saying after the last game as well, against UP. When they were 100 for 1 in the second innings and leading by 340-350 runs, that was the time when we still spoke. I spoke and Cheteshwar spoke, and we said, ‘It’s now or never’. It doesn’t really matter if we win or lose from here. We’ve worked hard throughout the season and we’re going to put in everything we have.”All 15 guys are really keen to win it for the team. The guys sitting outside as well. If you see how committed they were and how much zeal they were showing to win the game, it’s great. They were supporting every run we were scoring today, when we needed 55 runs.”You cannot ask for anything more from a team that has 15-16 players and the support staff. I think we are in a zone. It is helping us a lot. We are in a zone where we feel that energy from within. We don’t need anyone to really motivate us when we go out. When I speak or when Cheteshwar speaks, we just come into the zone when we are on the ground. That has actually helped us in the last couple of games because you can’t really do these things without having a belief that is actually so much stronger than having those doubts or pressure of winning the game. It’s just about that belief and determination the guys have from within.”When Saurashtra meet Vidarbha on February 3 in Nagpur, they will be playing their third final in seven seasons. Unadkat was part of the innings defeats to Mumbai in both the 2012-13 and 2015-16 finals. He said the team now was different, mentally, without the fear of failure.”Things have changed a lot from the time we played the last final,” Unadkat said. “We’ve got a very young side, compared to what we had then. We have three, four, or five guys who weren’t playing that game but are playing now and have done really well for the team. The atmosphere is pretty different. We were a bit desperate to win the title in those finals.”We are really eager to win it this time but we are not afraid of losing it. That is one change I can see between that final and how we’re approaching the game this year. The fact that we’ve won games like these. I think the confidence will be sky high. We’ve beaten Vidarbha this season on first-innings lead. So that’s going to play on their mind and we’d like to capitalise on that as much as we can.”Having said that, it’s the final and both teams will come out all guns blazing. Let’s hope for a great game. Both teams are looking good on paper.”

£16m Arsenal star deserves as much credit as their six scorers after Lens

As the Champions League anthem rang out around the Emirates Stadium on match day one of the competition, Arsenal fans rejoiced.

It had been a tough wait for more continental football at Europe's top table but oh how they've made a marker since returning to the competition.

Mikel Arteta's men haven't had a perfect record this season, notably losing away at Lens, but they have won every other match, including the return fixture with the Ligue 1 side on Wednesday night at home.

How Arsenal beat Lens

It was a scintillating performance from the Gunners who ran out 6-0 winners, just one goal shy of equalling their record win in the competition.

Kai Havertz, fresh from winning the game against Brentford last weekend, opened the scoring by prodding home from close range and then it was goal after goal from that moment onwards.

Gabriel Jesus then put two Lens defenders on the ground before sliding the ball home for a two goal advantage, with further goals from Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Martin Odegaard and Jorginho rounding off proceedings.

The Londoners led 4-0 after just 27 minutes played, before Odegaard's superb volley on the stroke of half-time made it five.

Unsurprisingly, Arteta's men were not as rampant in the second period, with Jorginho's late penalty after a handball ended the game in the best way possible.

It was a landmark moment for many in red and white, not least Havertz who arguably delivered his best performance in an Arsenal shirt yet, while Saka's goal and assist means he is now the leading contributor of goal involvements in the Champions League this term. Not bad for a youngster making his debut in the competition.

9/10 star delivers best Arsenal display yet in Gunners player ratings vs Lens

Arsenal romped to a 6-0 victory over Lens in the Champions League.

That said, there was one man who didn't get on the scoresheet but deserved just as much praise for his showing at the Emirates; Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Tomiyasu's performance in numbers vs Lens

The Japanese defender has had to be patient for regular opportunities during his time in the English capital.

When he first signed from Bologna in a bargain £16m move, Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solekhol memorably suggested that sources didn't know whether he was a right-back or centre-back.

Well, how that has come back to bite him. Indeed, Tomiyasu is perhaps one of the most underappreciated and under-the-radar members of this Arsenal squad.

That said, there is a reason Arteta once suggested that he thinks the full-back is one of the finest defenders he's seen.

Commenting on Tomiyasu earlier this term, the Spaniard said: "He can play in any position in the backline, any formation in the backline – we don’t have a player like him. His defending is probably one of the best that I’ve seen in many situations."

That has been seen first-hand in recent weeks, but the 25-year-old saved his best performance of the season – certainly from an offensive point of view – for Lens on Wednesday evening.

His athleticism and power is rather staggering. You wouldn't look at him and expect that to be the case. Indeed, Tomiyasu is an understated character but when tasked with defending a tricky attacker or running with the ball at his feet, he comes alive.

Truth be told, he didn't have a huge amount of defending to do in midweek, faced with just two defensive duels – of which he lost both – but going forward he was as good as anyone we've seen in that position at Arsenal down the years.

Tomiyasu became an "assist machine" – as per reporter Connor Humm – creating two goals for his troubles, the first of which was a miraculous cross-field ball.

Whether or not he meant it merely as a clearance, it was still a fabulous delivery to the left-hand channel where Martinelli was waiting. The Brazilian drove at the Lens defence before curling the ball beyond Brice Samba. Liquid football.

The second assist was just as nice. Supporting Saka down the right-hand side, the former Bologna man galloped forward like a champion horse before laying a dinked cross on a plate for Odegaard to slam home.

Substituted at half-time, it was a testament to just how important he has become to this Arsenal team, leaving the field with a 100% cross success, as well as supplying three key passes, the most of anyone on the pitch. That's quite something from a defender in a 6-0 victory, but it proved Tomiyasu is certainly not a one-trick pony. He offers just about everything you could want from a full-back.

Van Bronckhorst struck gold on Rangers gem who is now worth 40% less

Glasgow Rangers may not have enjoyed the best of starts to the current season, yet they secured victory in the League Cup final on Sunday to secure Philippe Clement his first trophy in charge of the Ibrox side.

It marks a stunning turnaround from where the club were in late September and the onus is for the Belgian to further strengthen his squad when the January transfer window opens.

Not only will he hope to bring a few players to Glasgow, but the 49-year-old coach will also be looking to build a sustainable player trading model in the process.

Michael Beale may have sold a few players during the summer, yet they weren’t the fees that Giovanni van Bronckhorst managed to rake in during his spell in charge of the club.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s transfer record at Rangers

The Dutchman perhaps didn’t enjoy the best record with regards to incomings, as many of his signings failed to really make an impression in Glasgow.

The likes of Aaron Ramsey and Amad Diallo failed to really get going at Ibrox during their six-month loan spells – the former notably missing a decisive spot kick in the Europa League final – while money was spent on Ben Davies, Ridvan Yilmaz and Antonio Colak; the less said about those the better.

Former Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

The two defenders are still trying to make a name for themselves at the Light Blues, while Colak was sold after just a solitary season in Scotland.

With regard to player sales, however, the Dutchman managed to sell a few players for big profits.

Nathan Patterson was the first to leave, moving to Everton for a transfer fee in the region of £16m and it was the record fee received by the Scottish club at the time.

During the summer transfer window in 2022, Van Bronckhorst managed to sell another two players for big fees. Joe Aribo joined Southampton for £10m before defender Calvin Bassey moved abroad to sign for Ajax.

The Nigerian defender had enjoyed a breakthrough campaign and the Dutch side paid a fee of £23m, a price that obliterated the record Patterson had set just a few months prior.

It looks as though the Gers hit the jackpot with this sale, as the current Fulham gem has seen his market value decrease since leaving Scotland.

Calvin Bassey’s statistics at Rangers

Following another failure to secure the Premiership title during the 2019/20 season, Steven Gerrard spent that summer bolstering his squad and one young talent to arrive was Bassey.

Aged just 19, he arrived from Leicester City and was looked upon as a solid backup option to Borna Barisic. Throughout the title-winning campaign, the defender made 15 appearances across all competitions and the onus was for him to establish himself as part of the starting XI during 2021/22.

The “explosive” starlet – as so dubbed by his U23 coach at Leicester, Steve Beaglehole – may have required an injury crisis during his second season to forge his way into the starting XI, but he took full advantage.

Former Rangers centre-back Calvin Bassey.

He made fleeting appearances at left-back under Gerrard during the early stages of the season, but it wasn’t until Van Bronckhorst arrived combined with an injury crisis that saw him move to the centre of the defence.

Overall, he played in 50 matches during the whole campaign and he forged a solid partnership alongside Connor Goldson as the Light Blues came so close to securing Europa League glory.

These displays on the continental stage clearly attracted interest from afar, and it was Ajax who were the most attractive proposition for the player.

Having shone when given a consistent run in the team, Bassey had certainly earned his big move, yet he hasn’t quite enjoyed the same sort of success since leaving Rangers 18 months ago.

Calvin Bassey's performances since leaving Rangers

During his spell at Ajax, Bassey struggled to cope with the pressure as he made 39 appearances in all competitions yet failed to inspire the team to any sort of silverware.

Calvin Bassey

Criticism for his displays was led by former midfielder Rafael van der Vaart, who said: "How is someone who played for Glasgow Rangers like Calvin Bassey going to be able to lead the defence at Ajax?

"Where was the Ajax youth system? Was there no one there better than him? Because if there isn't then you have a major problem. Sometimes it's better if you don't have any money because then you don't do crazy things. Then you wait for the right moment and occasionally take a chance. Instead, they spent 23 million Euros on Bassey.”

Harsh words indeed, and he lasted just a single season before joining Fulham this summer.

Bassey currently ranks just sixth in the Cottagers squad for tackles per game (1.4) in the Premier League, while also ranking in the same position for clearances (two) and interceptions (1.5) per game.

Not only that, but the defender loses possession on average 9.3 times per game along with keeping just two clean sheets during his 12 league appearances so far.

Calvin Bassey's market value in 2023

It appears as though Bassey is struggling to get to grips with Premier League football and this is evidenced by his market value decreasing.

Having cost Ajax £23m when they signed him from Rangers, the 23-year-old is now worth €16.2m (£14m) according to Football Transfers, which represents a 40% decrease from the fee the Dutch side splashed out on him.

Calvin Bassey at Rangers

In reality, the Gers would have loved to have kept a talent like Bassey at the club, especially as he could have continued his development in the centre-back position.

They couldn’t turn down an offer such as the one presented by the Eredivisie side and the club have clearly struck gold by selling the 6 foot 1 brute for such a lavish profit.

Clement will be hoping to do the same once he gets into his first transfer window as manager of the Gers and, by building an effective player trading model, he will be able to lure talented starlets to the club with the premise of developing them into future stars.

This in turn will allow the Belgian to sell them on for a profit which can then be reinvested back into the playing squad.

Mustafizur's three-run last over helps Rajshahi defend 135

How the game played outMustafizur Rahman’s superb death-overs bowling hauled Rajshahi Kings to an unlikely five-run win over Rangpur Riders, who had seemed to be cruising until the 19th over of their 136-run chase. Mustafizur tied down Farhad Reza for three balls, before Rilee Rossouw scampered through for a bye off the fifth ball.Rossouw, however, couldn’t force the game into a Super Over, as Mustafizur delivered a superb full ball that was squirted into the in-field for a single. Rossouw was unbeaten on 44 off 46 balls with three fours.Earlier, the faltering Kings were boosted by a 54-run fourth-wicket stand between Mohammad Hafeez and Zakir Hasan, who top-scored with an unbeaten 36-ball 42, that kept the Kings on track till the 14th over. But they lost their way thereafter, making only 39 runs in the last five.Turning points

  • Mashrafe slowing the Kings down by removing Soumya Sarkar in the sixth over, caught at long-on. Soumya had made an aggressive start, hitting two fours and a six in his 13-ball 18.
  • Ravi Bopara’s direct hit that ran out Mohammad Hafeez in the 14th over, after he and Zakir had helped the Kings recover with a 54-run stand following the three early wickets.
  • Mustafizur Rahman conceding only three runs in the last over, when Riders needed nine. He bowled three dot balls to Farhad Reza who, despite having a set Rossouw at the other end, kept swinging and missing.

Star of the dayMustafizur kept his reputation as one of the best slog-over bowlers in the world, conceding just seven runs in two overs when the Kings needed to defend 22 runs off the last three overs. The big missRossouw would rue taking a single off the first ball of the last over, as Reza spent the next three swinging and missing.Where the teams standThe defending champions Riders have lost their third game in five outings, while Rajshahi have picked up their second win in four games.

"Underrated" striker likened to Victor Osimhen wants Arsenal transfer

It's been reported this week that an "underrated" striker has his eyes on a move to Arsenal.

The strikers who Arsenal could sign

Widespread rumours have suggested that sporting director Edu and manager Mikel Arteta are eager to bring in a proven goalscorer and add more firepower.

Right now, Arsenal have just Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Jesus to choose from as their natural goalscoring options, leading to interest in some of Europe's most prolific marksman.

Fabrizio Romano says Arsenal want £80m star who's "similar" to Douglas Luiz

Arteta is eyeing a new midfielder.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 7, 2023

Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic is liked by Arsenal as one option, while some media sources have suggested that Napoli superstar Victor Osimhen could become a target for Arteta.

Another very enticing option for the Gunners is Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez. The Mexican is currently enjoying the season of his life with 18 goals in just 15 Eredivisie appearances so far, and some reports have stated that Arsenal are keen on signing Gimenez.

There are few candidates to shore up Arteta's attacking options, it would seem, but the one player who has been most regularly mentioned is Brentford star Ivan Toney.

Ivan Toney

The Englishman is expected to be back from his ban for alleged gambling breaches in mid-January, with Arsenal tipped as a very real landing spot in 2024. Arteta's side have also been urged to sign Toney by key Arsenal figureheads of past seasons, like former striker Ian Wright, who told the Stick to Football podcast that he's the last piece of the jigsaw.

“I believe that Arsenal in what we’re trying to do now – the margins are so small now – you cannot afford to miss those chances and not win those games," said Wright.

“The Toney links don’t go away because you can see that’s probably the last bit in the jigsaw. It’s obvious for everyone to see that this is the last piece. He will do it if it can be done.”

As per The Mirror, Arsenal may have been handed a boost in their pursuit of the 27-year-old.

Toney wants to join Arsenal in 2024

According to the outlet, and journalist Ryan Taylor, Toney is keen on a move to Arsenal next year amid Edu's hunt for a new striker. Little else is added beyond that bit of information, but Toney's eagerness to make the north London move could well hand them an advantage over competitors for his signature.

The striker, who scored 20 league goals last season, could seriously strengthen Arsenal's forward line with Football Transfers calling him a "similar" player to Osimhen.

Toney's been labelled "underrated" by Football Analyst Statman Dave as well. Brentford manager Thomas Frank is also a big fan of the forward, hailing his "remarkable" attributes.

“Ivan is amazing in many, many aspects,” Frank said.

“The way he copes with pressure and distractions is amazing. He’s been scoring goals, performing for the team and driving the team. He’s remarkable. I can only talk about the Ivan that I see every day around the place and he’s a fantastic person around the group."

Umpire Aleem Dar was unmoved, and after a short discussion Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne asked for a review – but Dar turned down the request on the basis that the visitors had taken too long to ask for it.Section 3.2.2 of the ICC’s Test playing conditions stipulate that: “The total time elapsed between the ball becoming dead and the review request being made shall be no more than 15 seconds,” and “If the on-field umpires believe that a request has not been made within the 15 second time limit, they shall decline the request for a Player Review.”According to the commentators on the SuperSport broadcast of the game, only 13 seconds had elapsed when Karunaratne asked for the review, and the TV umpire Ian Gould would have been in charge of timing the 15-second interval between the ball going dead and the review time limit.”The bowler’s end umpire shall provide the relevant player with a prompt after 10 seconds if the request has not been made at that time and the player shall request the review immediately thereafter,” read the playing conditions. Dar made no visible prompt to Fernando or the Sri Lankan players at the 10-second mark as SuperSport’s cameras followed him on the field of play.Had they been able to take the review, Sri Lanka would have had South Africa wobbling at 0 for 2 as replays showed that Amla would have been out lbw.Shortly afterwards, the umpires were into the action once again when Amla made a late move to leave a ball from Suranga Lakmal and ended up sliding a catch to Kusal Mendis at second slip off the face of the bat.The catch looked clean live, but Umpire Richard Kettleborough called for a TV review, giving a soft signal of “not out”. Replays showed that the ball had lodged straight into Mendis’ hands, and the soft signal was thus overruled by Gould.”If that is given not out, well, I’m walking back to the Caribbean,” said Michael Holding on SuperSport’s television commentary as replays of the catch were shown on the screen.”The Test match has not started well for the umpires,” he said. “First, 15 seconds reduced to 13, and now a soft signal of not out when it was clearly out.”

Hobbs not messing around: Wolves step in to sign new "monster" for O’Neil

Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly ‘stepped in’ to sign a new player in the January transfer window.

Wolves summer signings

The Old Gold had a busy summer off the pitch, with Gary O’Neil replacing Julen Lopetegui days before the 2023/24 season got underway. When it came to incomings and outgoings, O’Neil didn’t really have much time or resources to play with, although a number of new players were brought in.

On the pitch, there has been plenty of frustration, with Monday night’s 3-2 defeat to Fulham the latest setback for O’Neil’s side. The boss wasn’t happy with the officiating after the game either, saying on VAR:

"Maybe tonight [Monday] has finally turned me against VAR. I thought it would probably help but it doesn't seem to be. I'm managing a big football club here – the difference you're making to my reputation, the club's progression up the league, people's livelihoods is huge.

"It can't be with all the technology, in the best league in the world, it can't be OK. We should discuss the game really but unfortunately we have to discuss this."

Despite the on-field setbacks, sporting director Matt Hobbs appears to be planning for the upcoming winter window, where a new defender now seems to be on the radar for those at Molineux.

Sport Witness relayed a transfer update on Galatasaray’s Victor Nelsson and a possible move to Wolves. There have been claims suggesting that Wolves have now ‘stepped in’ to sign the centre-back after his representative made a trip to England to hold talks with interested parties. The report adds that Wolves are considering an approach in the New Year, with Nelsson falling out of favour in Turkey after admitting he’s not planning to sign a new deal with his current employers.

He began his career in his native country with Nordsjaelland and FC Copenhagen before making the move to Turkey in 2021. Since then, Nelsson has featured heavily for his employers and boasts plenty of senior experience as he is approaching 100 appearances for Galatasaray. (Victor Nelsson stats – Transfermarkt)

Previously labelled as a “monster” by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, Nelsson could come into O’Neil’s side and provide plenty of fierce competition to the club’s current centre-back options, Max Kilman, Santiago Bueno, Toti and Craig Dawson. (Wolves centre-backs – Transfermarkt)

However, there could be competition from fellow Premier League clubs for the defender, with recent reports suggesting both Arsenal and Tottenham are keen on signing Nelsson in 2024, so it appears to be one to keep an eye on heading into the New Year.
