Saka was incensed after being denied a penalty in the last-minute of the 2-2 draw, as he sprinted through on goal and appeared to make contact with Manuel Neuer, before going to ground. He was not given the spot-kick, though, with the referee seemingly deciding that he had dived. The Arsenal winger continued his protests after the final whistle as a dramatic game ended in chaotic scenes.

Saka did actually score in the game, opening the scoring with a brilliant curling effort, but that was cancelled out by a Serge Gnabry goal and a Harry Kane penalty. Leandro Trossard equalised in the second half, leaving the tie evenly poised ahead of next week's return leg.

Sky Sports: Man Utd make £86m defensive “hero” top target for next summer

Manchester United have identified an overseas defender as their number one target ahead of next summer, but a reliable journalist has revealed that it won't be cheap to bring him to the Premier League.

Man United's current backline options

The Red Devils have Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans as their natural options at centre-back as it stands, but there’s a chance that at least two of them could be heading for the exit door in the near future.

Both Lindelof and Evans will have reached the expiration of their deals at the end of the season (Man United contracts), so should they not put pen to paper on fresh terms, Erik ten Hag will have to enter the market to find suitable replacements in case they depart.

He will be hoping to feature prominently at Euro 2024.

Benfica’s Antonio Silva has worked his way through his club’s various youth ranks to get promoted to their first-team, where he’s so far made a total of 61 senior appearances to date (Transfermarkt – Silva statistics), and his recent form has caught the eye of chiefs.

The Old Trafford side have sent scouts to watch the Portugal international on several occasions this season, and whilst recent reports claim that Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi is the club’s top target for January, the 20-year-old is the player wanted later in 2024.

Man United want Antonio Silva in summer 2024

Taking to X, Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg revealed that Man United's number one candidate is Silva, but with a hefty release clause to his name, the hierarchy will have to empty their pockets should they want to get a deal over the line next summer.

He wrote: "News Antonio Silva: The 20 y/o central defender from SL Benfica is the absolutely top target for ManUtd for summer 2024!

"#MUFC already keen on contract details and the plans of the top talent €100m [£86m] release clause next year! Benfica expect him to leave the club next summer. Contract until 2027. He completes nearly 94% of his passes."

Ten Hag could land "hero" in Silva

Standing at 6 foot 1, Silva provides a real physical presence at the heart of a backline, which he’s proven so far this season as he’s currently averaging 3.6 clearances and 2.8 tackles per game in Liga Portugal (WhoScored – Silva statistics).

The Viseu native is also extremely calm and composed in possession, where he’s recording an outstanding 93.7% pass success rate, so he’s not only strong getting rid of the danger but also when he has the ball at his feet, controlling the game from the back.

Benfica’s “hero”, as dubbed by football scout Jacek Kulig, has had a taste of what it’s like to be successful having secured three pieces of silverware during his time with Roger Schmidt’s side, so he'll possess the winning mentality required to succeed at Man United.

Chelsea must unleash "magnificent" teen gem alongside Washington

Chelsea host Blackburn Rovers in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup this evening and it is imperative that the hosts avoid any slip-ups.

The Blues have endured a season so far that has been littered with inconsistency, showing glimpses of a side that cost over £1bn to assemble, but also crumbling under the heavy weight of their lofty transfer fees.

With Mauricio Pochettino needing to shift the doom and gloom surrounding Stamford Bridge, anything other than a victory against the Championship side will undoubtedly lead to many questioning his future.

Chelsea team news vs Blackburn Rovers

In this results-driven business, Pochettino hasn't been helped by factors that are out of his hands and having to deal with several injuries to senior players is one of them.

Chelsea will be without eight players this evening, including Mykhailo Mudryk, who pulled out of the 2-0 defeat against Brentford due to a similar muscle issue.

Armando Broja, Ben Chilwell, Christopher Nkunku, Romeo Lavia, Trevoh Chalobah, Carney Chukwuemeka and Wesley Fofana are also out, while Chilwell has travelled overseas to step up his rehabilitation from a hamstring injury.

Ben Chiwell Chelsea

With a huge trip to table toppers Tottenham Hotspur to come on Monday night, the Argentine is likely to make a few changes to the side that lost to Brentford and utilise the full depth of his squad.

The main area that requires the most surgery is in attack. Chelsea have been toothless in the final third this term, scoring just 13 times in ten matches in the Premier League, but given they are light on options in forward areas, Raheem Sterling and Noni Madueke are likely to flank Nicolas Jackson, or Pochettino could go rogue and unleash 18-year-old Deivid Washington from the off.

The Brazilian came off the bench to make his first appearance for the club on Saturday and against Championship opposition, now could be the perfect opportunity to award him with his first start.

A complete forward, who possesses the killer instinct, great off-the-ball movement, timing, intelligence, and flair in the final third, as per football talent scout Jacek Kulig, the youngster could use those attributes to devastating effect by terrorising Blackburn's defence.

Washington isn't the only teenager vying for a starting spot, however, with defensive midfielder Lesley Ugochukwku in line to partner Conor Gallagher and Enzo Fernandez in midfield to offer Moises Caicedo the chance to rest.

Why Lesley Ugochukwu should start against Blackburn Rovers

A destructive and ball-winning midfielder, who arrived from Rennes for £23.2m in the summer, Ugochukwu has played in every minute of Chelsea's Carabao Cup victories over Wimbledon and Brighton & Hove Albion.

The 19-year-old, described by journalist Antonio Mango as "magnificent", offers an intimidating presence on the pitch due to his 6 foot 3 frame and has an aggressive approach to his game, flying into tackles and using his extreme physique to bully the opposition.

Lesley-Ugochukwu-Chelsea

The Frenchman, who has made the seamless transition from centre back to defensive midfield, utilised the above attributes along with his exceptional work rate and stamina for Rennes last term, making 26 appearances in Ligue 1.

For a young player, transitioning into a new role, Ugochukwu impressed across an array of his defensive and passing metrics when compared against his position peers in the division last season, ranking in the top 16% for blocks, top 24% for aerials won, top 22% for interceptions and top 17% for pass completion per 90, as per FBref.

Clearly an imposing figure on the pitch, Ugochukwu has showcased that in abundance across his two performances in the Carabao Cup, making 2.5 tackles per game, 6.5 ball recoveries and 2.5 duels won, via SofaScore.

With that said, Pochettino should continue trusting the teenager to put in exceptional displays, especially in this competition, by starting him ahead of Caicedo this evening.

Leeds have "exciting" academy star who’s scoring at a faster rate than Piroe

Leeds United are loving life in the Championship at the moment, recent wins against Norwich City and Huddersfield Town showcasing Daniel Farke's men at their very best – coming from behind at Carrow Road in dramatic fashion to beat the Canaries 3-2, whilst a barnstorming 4-1 win at home over the Terriers was far more straightforward but equally as entertaining.

Joel Piroe continues to lead the line for the Whites, but it's the displays of Crysencio Summerville in recent weeks that have got supporters purring in West Yorkshire.

The Dutch winger helped himself to four goals in total versus Norwich and Huddersfield, the 22-year-old arguably Leeds' star-man now after a mass exodus from Elland Road this summer saw players such as Tyler Adams and Luis Sinisterra depart.

With the first team firing on all cylinders – Leeds third in the current Championship standings – it'll be even more pleasing for the die-hard Whites masses that youth players such as Sean McGurk are excelling for the U21's who could go on to be heroes themselves at senior level.

Currently scoring at a faster rate than Piroe, McGurk is already being tipped for greatness when he eventually pulls on a first-team jersey.

His performances at youth level have been electric, considering Piroe's own blistering goalscoring form.

Piroe's numbers this season

Leaving Swansea behind for pastures new in the Whites, the 24-year-old has not regretted swapping the Swans for Leeds at all.

Scoring five goals in 14 starts for his new employers to date in the second tier, the Dutch attacker stood out in particular in Leeds' 3-0 win over Millwall with two of those goals coming in the clash at the Den.

Leeds forward Joel Piroe

Netting both opportunities he put on target with cool precision, the ex-Swansea Player of the Year winner singlehandedly helped his outfit pick up only their second Championship win of the season at that point.

Piroe's effectiveness has lessened in recent encounters – the Dutchman only netting once in his last six – but he's still picked week in, week out by Farke in the attacking ranks.

McGurk, however, continues to be deadly for Leeds at U21 level, the ex-Wigan Athletic attacking midfielder crucial for his Premier League 2 side.

McGurk's numbers this season

The 20-year-old has received plenty of praise from the football world off the back of his impressive performances and raw potential, McGurk himself even stating – when first signing for Leeds – that he would be best described as an "exciting" player to watch.

He certainly has been exciting for the Whites this campaign in the Premier League 2, scoring at a faster rate than Piroe even whilst playing primarily behind the forwards in a central attacking midfield role.

McGurk has six goal contributions in total, including four goals in seven outings alongside two assists – a better scoring rate than Piroe's return of five in 14.

Last time out, he helped his team race into a 2-0 goal lead against Liverpool U21's – scoring within the first few minutes himself, before assisting number 9 Mateo Joseph.

The game would finish 2-2, but McGurk was a key performer again with his current displays suggesting that he could be given a first-team opportunity soon.

With Leeds developing the likes of Kalvin Phillips and Lewis Cook through their Academy who have gone on to have established careers at top-flight level, they'll hope they have another gem in McGurk who becomes a star at senior level for the Whites.

Cricket Australia's culture review: the day in ten points

The main points from a day where the problems facing Australian cricket were laid bare

Daniel Brettig29-Oct-2018

Australia captain Tim Paine and vice captain Josh Hazlewood present the player review at the CA press conference•Getty Images

– Independent reviews of Cricket Australia and the Australian men’s team, conducted by Simon Longstaff and Rick McCosker, found that in chasing higher performance on and off the field, the governing body and its showpiece team lost sight of the spirit of cricket.- The pursuit of higher performance on the field and more efficient governance off it was linked to the Argus review of team performance and the Crawford/Carter review of governance, both delivered in 2011.- These reviews helped enhance a CA system that resulted in record financial returns and reasonable amounts of success from weaker national teams than those of the preceding era, but also a developing culture of arrogance and control, both at the national and team performance level and also the governance and stakeholder management level, with state associations, the players’ association and corporate partners and broadcasters.- The spirit of cricket, deemed intrinsic to previous editions of CA’s strategy, was omitted from the 2017 edition, replaced by a ‘How We Play’ statement that talked of “smashing the boundaries” among other things. At the same time a set of guiding principles for the men’s national team ‘The Australian Way’, made no mention of respect for opponents or umpires.- Survey respondents pointed out that CA has become “arrogant” and “controlling”, and that the national team had countenanced forms of cheating as “playing hard to win”, while the wider organisation had allowed for instances of bullying under the cloak of “tough negotiations”.Cameron Bancroft and Steven Smith leave the press conference where they admitted to ball tampering•Gallo Images/Getty Images

– The review stated, “One of the most significant findings of this review is that the perceived causes of the ball-tampering incident at Newlands significantly overlap with the perceived current state of cricket in Australia. That is, the evidence suggests that Newlands was not an aberration – a cultural ‘outlier’.”- It went on, “Rather, it is an extreme example of a latent tendency growing out of the prevailing culture of men’s cricket in Australia – especially (but not exclusively) at the elite level. As it happens, this fits with the opinions of keen observers of Australian cricket who report, with considerable regret (and perhaps the benefit of hindsight), that the events in Newland were ‘disappointing but not surprising’.”- The review goes on to outline a set of “shadow values and principles” that more accurately define CA, as opposed to the ideals expressed in the Australian Cricket Strategy and its ‘How We Play’ section. These include things like: “COMMAND AND CONTROL, “ONLY RESULTS MATTER”, “AUSTRALIA NEEDS US TO WIN, “POPULARITY MATTERS”, “INDIVIDUAL FIRST”, “COMBATIVENESS AND AGGRESSION IS GOOD”, “UNLEASH THE BEAST”, “KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN”, and “WE’RE GREAT ON DIVERSITY”- A series of 42 recommendations made by the review include the forming of a permanent Ethics Commission for Australian cricket with three members on the panel, the twice annual meeting of an Australian Cricket Council comprising CA, states, the players and the umpires, and rapid action to improve relations between CA and the ACA. CA has accepted these recommendations.- Among the recommendations CA has not accepted are the removal of Test and ODI players from consideration for the T20 team to allow them to play more state cricket, and the suggestion that the Minutes of CA board meetings be made public. CA’s chairman David Peever has insisted he will retain his position until the state associations tell him otherwise and that the bans of David Warner, Steven Smith and Cameron Bancroft will not be overturned.

Sarfraz should be relieved of Test captaincy – Mohsin Khan

Mohsin Khan, freshly installed as the head of the PCB’s new cricket committee, wants Sarfraz Ahmed to be relieved of the Test captaincy, a suggestion that will do little to calm an already turbulent start to the committee’s existence. It is also a suggestion that the board chairman Ehsan Mani has shot down.Announced publicly only on Friday, Mohsin’s appointment had the PCB apparently distancing itself from the Justice Qayyum report on match-fixing, in a bid to convince him to work with Wasim Akram. Misbah-ul-Haq and former women’s captain Urooj Mumtaz are the other members of the committee. It then emerged that only a week before the committee was formed, Mohsin had called Mickey Arthur a “stupid donkey” on a show on TV, an assessment that could presumably make the three meetings in a year the committee will have with the coach a little awkward. On that same show, Mohsin had first aired the opinion that Sarfraz should not be Test captain, an opinion he remained true to when talking to on Tuesday evening.”I have said it before and I will say it now too,” Mohsin, who is associated with the channel as an expert, said “with Sarfraz I was saying you got a new guy in, don’t put the burden of three formats on him. It will take such a physical load on him, T20s, ODIs and then Tests if he is captain he will not get any mental relaxation.”I had said make him T20 and ODI captain and in Tests, put in a senior player for a year, year-and-a-half which will give him [Sarfraz] time, allow him to relax and groom himself as a leader, to get some confidence.”Mohsin pointed to Pakistan’s haggard performances in the Asia Cup, which appeared to have taken a toll on Sarfraz.”Sarfraz’s body language was so down. I felt sorry for him that he’s had so much pressure put on him, with T20s, ODIs and Tests. There’s no doubt he is so talented and it’s not as if he is 35-36. He is young, he has a lot of time. That was my view before and it is now as well.”It is a more sympathetic take than it may come across as; the burdens of captaincy in every format have weighed heavily on Sarfraz, who until recently was in the midst of a poor run with the bat as well as in uncertain form with the gloves. But the timing of his remarks will raise eyebrows. Sarfraz has just led Pakistan to a Test series win against Australia – where he finally managed some big scores – and then oversaw a resounding 3-0 whitewash in the T20I series. That result, incidentally, has been sidelined by the news the cricket committee has been making.Mohsin and the committee do not have the power to remove Sarfraz from the Test captaincy, only to make a recommendation to Mani, the chairman. And that is something Mohsin will be doing.”Yes, absolutely,” he said. “I have spoken to Ehsan Mani, the final decision will of course be his but I will give him the suggestion. Whatever suggestions I give, it will not be out of personal interest. I will only suggest those things that will help make Pakistan better on or off the field.”This New Zealand series, it has Tests, ODIs and T20s, it will give us a better picture of how much mentally stronger Sarfraz has become. I will repeat – I only say this because he is still young and he doesn’t need this much pressure on him. He needs some relief time because wicketkeeping itself is such a difficult job.”Mani will not be taking that suggestion on.”I have full faith in Sarfraz as Pakistan captain,” Mani told ESPNcricinfo. “He is the Pakistan captain, that is completely unambiguous. He is the Pakistan captain today, there is no other consideration or thought in anyone’s mind. He has the absolute support of the board.”Mohsin’s comments, no matter the nuance, are unlikely to enamour him to Sarfraz, which means he will have managed to annoy both coach and captain less than a week into his job. Arthur has been understandably unimpressed by Mohsin’s remarks about him, and is believed to have asked for an apology. That has left the PCB scrambling to find a way for the pair to move on from this, with a first meeting between the two likely to be in front of Mani.On Tuesday, the board was forced to clarify their stance on the Qayyum report, insisting that the “work of Justice Qayyum is acknowledged and appreciated by PCB and there is no truth in the perception… that the report has been dismissed by the PCB.”In the same statement, the board added that it “maintains a zero-tolerance policy on corruption.”
