Sri Lankan cricketers to leave IPL on May 5

The Sri Lankan cricketers playing in the 2011 IPL have been asked to report to Colombo by May 5 to prepare for the tour of England. The squad is due to depart for England on May 10 whereas the IPL goes on until May 28.”For the past two months or so they [the Sri Lankan players] have been playing one-day and T20 cricket and it is time they switched on to playing the longer game,” said Duleep Mendis, who replaced Aravinda de Silva as the new chairman of selectors after the World Cup. “The first half of the English summer is not going to be easy and we want the players to report for training and to concentrate on getting used to the change of playing white balls to red.”Eleven Sri Lankan cricketers are involved in the IPL, including Tillakaratne Dilshan, who is likely to lead Sri Lanka in England after Kumar Sangakkara resigned after the World Cup. Dilshan plays for Royal Challengers Bangalore along with fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep.Former captains Sangakkara (Deccan Chargers) and Mahela Jayawardene (Kochi Tuskers), Suraj Randiv and Nuwan Kulasekara (Chennai Super Kings), Dilhara Fernando and Lasith Mallinga (Mumbai Indians), Angelo Mathews (Pune Warriors) and Muttiah Muralitharan and Thisara Perera (Kochi Tuskers) are the other Sri Lankan players in IPL.Sri Lanka begin their tour of England on May 14 and play three Tests, five one-day internationals and a Twenty20 international.

Australia wait on World Cup injured

Australia’s World Cup squad will get on a plane on Wednesday with injuries a concern, but the coach Tim Nielsen hopes the selectors don’t risk sending too many unfit men to defend the title. Ricky Ponting (finger), Michael Hussey (hamstring) and Nathan Hauritz (shoulder) have all been racing to prove their fitness for the tournament, while some of their potential replacements are also struggling, including Xavier Doherty (back) and Shaun Marsh (hamstring). The squad heads to India this week and their first practice match is on Sunday against India in Bangalore, eight days before their opening game of the tournament proper, against Zimbabwe. Hussey said on the weekend that he would find it difficult to be fully fit for the first couple of outings, while Hauritz, who dislocated his shoulder during the recent ODIs against England, was bowling in the nets last week and said he had no doubt he would be fit for the World Cup.But while Australia might be able to carry one injured player at the start of the tournament, it’s risky to allow too many men to board the plane at less than 100% fitness. Nielsen said he believed the squad could not take such a chance with the World Cup on the line.”I can’t afford to have two, three or four guys that we’re uncertain about,” Nielsen said. “It means we’ve only got 11 fit ready to go at the start. That’s the quandary we face. What is the role the players who are injured play? Do we have back-up for that position? If we have an injury to somebody in the team at the moment is the injured person the next cab off the rank or the only possible replacement or do we have other options? All those things will be thrown into the mix.”One positive is the progress being made by Ponting, who missed the Sydney Test after aggravating his broken finger during the Boxing Day Test. Ponting had surgery on the little finger on his left hand after the Melbourne game, and by the time the World Cup opener arrives it will have had nearly seven weeks of recovery time. He hasn’t returned to fielding yet, but believes he could play if the Australians had an important match tomorrow.”I’m a lot better now than I was last week,” Ponting said on Monday night at the Allan Border Medal ceremony in Melbourne. “I’ve been back in the nets this week, I’ve had three good hits and a bit of time out there. It’s probably a bit more advanced than I thought it would be.”The spin position shapes up as one of the more serious issues, with Steven Smith also battling a hip muscle injury, along with the problems that are troubling Hauritz and Doherty. Smith’s injury shouldn’t be a major concern, though the more serious situation with Hauritz, added to the likelihood that Hussey won’t be fit for the start of the World Cup, leaves the selectors with some headaches.”We’ve got our fingers crossed for both those guys,” Ponting said. “Their injuries couldn’t have come at a worse time for us, looking forward to the World Cup. They’re both very senior members of our side. We’ve got our fingers crossed for both those guys and I know the physios and doctors have been doing a lot of talking today about those two. Hopefully they come up.”The coach Nielsen said it was a delicate balancing act: “If we’re going to replace them we’re going to have to rule them out of the tournament full stop. That’s the first question we’re going to have to answer. Are they going to take any part in the tournament in a timeframe that’s going to work for us?”Once we make that decision then it’s, okay, if we are going to replace them, is the replacement ready to go straight away or are we better off taking the named player and they might be ready at the same time? All those different things that come into the equation.”Australia have two warm-up games before the World Cup begins in earnest, and they have six pool matches before finding out if they have progressed to the next round. Australia are in a group with Pakistan, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Canada and Kenya.

Railways seal quarter-final berth

With most of the quarter-final spots decided on the third day itself, it was a fairly insipid fourth day in the last round of the Ranji Trophy. Railways reached the knockout phase for the first time in six seasons after completing an easy win over Bengal. Mumbai, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are familiar names in the quarter-final line-up, while Haryana repeated last year’s success and reached the knockout phase. Baroda are in the next round as well, for the first time since they reached the semi-finals in 2007-08. Uttar Pradesh have been the major disappointments of the season, failing to get out of the group phase for the first time in four years, while Saurashtra, who reached the semi-finals in 2007-08 and 2008-09, barely escaped relegation. Assam and Himcahal Pradesh will be plying their trade in the Plate League next season.

Group A

Railways completed a miserable Ranji Trophy season for Bengal with a victory by an innings and 10 runs at the Karnail Singh Stadium in Delhi. The hosts needed less than an hour to wrap up proceedings, with the last four batsmen failing to score. Three of them perished in similar fashion, edging the ball to the keeper off Jai P Yadav, who finished with 5 for 20, as Bengal crumbled to 134 all out. The win earns Railways, who finished second in Group A behind Mumbai, a trip to Baroda for a quarter-final encounter.Having made sure of a place in the quarters, Tamil Nadu declared on 240 for 6 against Gujarat, who then limped to 115 for 4 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. S Badrinath led the hosts with 84, while legspinner Salil Yadav had enough time to claim 4 for 96. Tamil Nadu will now take on Haryana in Lahli for a place in the semi-finals. Badrinath’s innings took him to the top of the season’s run charts.

Quarter-finals (December 24-27, 2010)

  • Baroda v Railways at Vadodara

  • Haryana v Tamil Nadu at Rohtak

  • M. Pradesh v Karnataka at Indore

  • Rajasthan v Mumbai at Jaipur

A strong rearguard action rescued Delhi from 69 for 5 against Mumbai at the Roshanara Club Ground in New Delhi, and took them to 242 for 6, but it was an academic exercise as they had already been eliminated from the tournament. Delhi dismissed the remaining two Mumbai batsmen for the addition of just six runs to their overnight total, but were never in with a chance as they had to chase over 550 to win the game. Aavishkar Salvi did the early damage for Mumbai, taking two wickets, and it took a 106-run seventh-wicket partnership between Sumit Narwal, who raced to an unbeaten 79 from 72 balls, with nine fours and four sixes, and Rajat Batra, who ground out a patient 57 from 147 balls, to make sure Delhi ended their season with at least a draw. Mumbai move on to play Rajasthan, who progressed from the Plate League, in Jaipur.

Group B

Having already sealed Uttar Pradesh’s fate on the third day, Karnataka got in some useful batting practice on the last day at Green Park in Kanpur. Stuart Binny continued his batting form, getting his second century in three matches, as Karnataka finished the day on 537 for 4. He was supported by Ganesh Satish who made 100 not out. Binny’s 127 off 157 balls took him to 331 runs for the season in three games at 66.20. Satish’s century was his first of the season. Karnataka will travel to Indore next to play Madhya Pradesh in the quarter-finals.

Man United look to sign Christian Eriksen

Manchester United have appointed Erik ten Hag as their new manager to join Old Trafford this summer, and it is now reported he has his eye on a Premier League player he would like to join with him.

What’s the latest?

According to the Daily Star, Manchester United are plotting a move for former Spurs star, Christian Eriksen, who is currently on a six-month contract with Brentford and is set to become a free agent at the end of the season.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-man-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-more-nunez-ten-hag-nkunku-richarlison” title=”Read the latest Man United news!”]

The report suggests that it is the new manager who has identified the player as a target, with Ten Hag believing that the 30-year-old would be the perfect signing to launch his revolution at the club after working with him at Ajax when he joined their training outfit following his cardiac arrest last summer.

Instant masterclass

There is no doubt that Ten Hag could make an instant impact and get Old Trafford rocking if he can convince Christian Eriksen to join the side, following his impressive performances in Thomas Frank’s side since his return to professional football and the Premier League.

The £13.5m-rated ace who was hailed “top class” by teammate Pontus Jansson, has made a huge improvement to Brentford’s form after the side went into freefall when they lost seven out of nine league games in January and February.

Since his first Premier League start this season against Norwich City on the 5th of March, Brentford have not lost a single game the Danish star has played in, picking up five wins and one draw when he has played the full 90 minutes in the team, scoring one goal already in seven appearances from his central midfield position.

That has taken his top-flight goal tally in England to a whopping 52, something that provides evidence of his important knowledge of the division.

There is no coincidence that the side have regained their winning form and saved themselves from a relegation fight this season following Eriksen’s influence and inclusion in the team, and that kind of positive influence and presence on the pitch is exactly what Ten Hag will be looking to bring to Old Trafford next season.

Described as “special” by Mauricio Pochettino and as a “wizard” by reporter Josh Wright, he’d certainly be a fantastic first acquisition in the new era at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are not the only ones desperate to snap up the phenomenal free agent this summer with Antonio Conte also planning to make a move to bring him back to Tottenham Hotspur, so Ten Hag will have to offer Eriksen a role in his new-look team that he won’t be able to refuse this summer if he stands any chance of signing him.

He has won this award – named the David Shepherd Trophy – for the second time in successive years. The other nominees in the category were Steve Davis, Tony Hill and five-time winner Simon Taufel.Dar, 42, was voted by the captains of the ten full members of the ICC and the eight-man elite panel of ICC’s match referees for the period August 24, 2009 to August 10, 2010. Their choice was based on his decision statistics and officiating skills over the past 12 months. After collecting his trophy from match referee Chris Broad, Dar said: “I think the fact that I’m still playing cricket in Pakistan makes me a good umpire. In the last four times I’ve played cricket I’ve scored centuries so I definitely think that has helped.”

Newcastle transfer news on Dybala

Newcastle United have reportedly now held talks to sign Paulo Dybala in the summer.

The Lowdown: Progress

The Argentina international will leave Juventus at the end of this season after failing to agree a new contract in Turin.

It had been reported last week that the St. James’ Park faithful have ‘moved’ for Dybala, with his preference to move abroad from Italy.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-5/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

However, that had not gone ‘beyond the show of interest’, with other clubs like Arsenal also in the mix for his signature.

The Latest: Talks

As per Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness), the North East club is one of a number of teams who Dybala’s representative has now talked to, as they went on an ‘extensive tour’ of both England and Spain to see what teams had to say.

HIs representative is now expected back in Turin ‘in the next few hours’, where they will discuss with Dybala about the information that they gathered.

The Verdict: Sign

Dybala is out of contract in the summer, and so to sign him on a free transfer would represent an absolute bargain.

Currently rated at £36m by Transfermarkt, he has previously been lauded as ‘world-class‘ by former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson, having won five Serie A titles with Juve and recorded over 200 combined goals and assists for club and country.

Nonetheless, at 28 years of age, the Argentina international is in his prime, and so now is the perfect time for the Tyneside outfit to snap him up. Signing a high level player for no initial transfer fee is a masterclass whichever way you look at it.

Leeds ‘definitely’ want to sign striker

Leeds United will ‘definitely’ target a new striker this summer to provide cover and competition for Patrick Bamford.

That’s according to transfer insider Dean Jones, who was speaking to This Is Futbol.

The lowdown

Bamford enjoyed a fine 2020/21 season upon Leeds’ return to the Premier League, scoring 17 goals, providing eight assists and – crucially – featuring in every single game (via Transfermarkt). However, this season he has been ravaged by injury, limiting him to just seven starts out of a possible 32 in the top flight.

An ankle injury kept Bamford out from the end of September until the start of December, and he then suffered a hamstring problem upon his return against Brentford. Having returned to the fold in March, he was forced off in the win away to Wolves and has missed the team’s subsequent two games (via Transfermarkt).

Amidst these woes, Leeds have often turned to summer signing Dan James – who is predominantly a winger – to lead the line, and the Welshman has only scored four goals.

The latest

Jones has said that Leeds believe they need a more effective centre-forward ‘backup’ for Bamford and have made it a priority ahead of the summer transfer window.

He told This Is Futbol: “Leeds are definitely going to look to sign a new striker. I think irrelevant of whether Bamford is fit or not. We’ve seen that you have to have backup for him.”

The verdict

Bamford’s availability was excellent in 2020/21 but his injury nightmare this season has exposed a hole in Leeds’ squad, so who could they potentially sign to strengthen their centre-forward ranks?

According to a recent report from TEAMtalk, the Whites have entered the race to sign Ben Brereton Diaz from Blackburn Rovers. The £9m-rated Chile international has been prolific for the Lancashire club in the Championship, bagging 20 goals in 34 appearances so far this season.

In addition to his goalscoring, the 22-year-old offers an ‘extraordinary’ work rate, according to his manager Tony Mowbray, so he could potentially be a favourite at Elland Road if he were to join Leeds and carry across that industrious trait.
