O time começou mal, erramos muito tecnicamente.

Finn has faith in ability to adjust

Steven Finn believes he is ready to step up the intensity as England build towards the first Test in Brisbane later this month

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Nov-2010Steven Finn believes he is ready to step up the intensity as England build towards the first Test in Brisbane later this month, and expects the crowd at Adelaide for Thursday’s second warm-up match against South Australia to play their part in trying to unsettle an unusually issue-free England squad.England’s victory in their opening first-class warm-up match in Perth last week was the first time in 45 years that they had launched an Ashes tour with a win, and Finn played an important part in that effort, having overcome a tricky first spell to return decent match figures of 3 for 115 in 34 overs.”We copped a bit of abuse at the WACA last week in that last innings,” Finn told reporters in Adelaide. “It’s something we’re prepared for, we’ll embrace and we’re going to try to enjoy. Friendly banter is good – to make sure we’re accessible as people, we’re human beings as well, and everyone’s got a sense of humour.”You can see the funny side when people are chirping you. It’s part of what we have to expect as international cricketers, and to be able to deal with that is important.”While he couldn’t claim to be entirely happy with his efforts, Finn was nevertheless pleased that he was able to adjust his length to suit the WACA wicket, having started the game with a length that was far too full for the conditions. By the final day, however, he had settled into a decent rhythm that boded well for future challenges.”I slid around in the footholds in the first innings a little bit – but I don’t want to make excuses,” said Finn. “I’m not the sort of person who is going to sit there and say it was because of the footholds I was bowling full.”It might have contributed. But I didn’t bowl well in my first spell and went for three or four an over – which is something I don’t want to do in Australia. I adapted and managed to bowl better lengths. It’s important that process happens quicker in future.”With 32 wickets in his eight Tests to date, and with an imposing 6’8″ frame that ought to be well-suited to Australia conditions, Finn has been earmarked as a vital part of England’s attack, even though he has never before set foot in the country. With that in mind, he is trying not to worry about getting everything right at once.”I was happy with how I bowled towards the end of the first innings,” he said. “It was that first spell that I wasn’t happy with at all. But I’m 21 years old, and understand that I’m going to be inconsistent every now and again. But it’s important that I don’t settle for that and I try to make myself better each time I go out and bowl – and learn every time too.”England are expected to name an unchanged side for the South Australia match, with Alastair Cook the only major concern form-wise, following his scores of 5 and 9 at the WACA. However, England’s coach, Andy Flower, dismissed any doubts, saying: “It’s one game, two innings. I think he’s going to do well.”

Figueirense quer time forte no estadual e na Copa do Brasil

West Indies under pressure to turn the corner

Match facts

June 18-22, 2010
Start time 10.00am (14.00GMT)

Big Picture

Will Darren Bravo make his Test debut and make a difference to an under-performing middle order?•AFP

Seven games into the tour and West Indies still don’t know how to beat South Africa, irrespective of the format. This West Indies team is a pale shadow of the one that fought bravely in Australia just a few months ago. Injuries to key players like Ramnaresh Sarwan and Fidel Edwards may have pegged their fortunes back a bit, but unfortunately, the other senior players look a deflated bunch. The intimidation from Chris Gayle is missing, so is the stodgy resistance from Shivnarine Chanderpaul.Their capitulation for 102 in the first Test at Trinidad was a sorry sight, after their bowlers did a decent job to restrict South Africa to 352. Nelon Pascal is not a batsman, but his dismissal in both innings – attempting a one-legged Caribbean style hoick – was a comical, yet depressing sight if you were a West Indies supporter. Besides him, the specialists at the top were out bowled shouldering arms, Narsingh Deonarine’s first-innings dismissal a case in point. Such shots don’t give confidence that the team is out there to fight it out.Despite that abject display, an unchanged team was named for the second Test. With the A team away in England, there wouldn’t have been a large pool of players to pick from. The best they can do is to slot batsmen in positions they’re more familiar with. Given their poor form, a draw at St Kitts will be as good as a victory. For inspiration, they need to run tapes of the Adelaide Test late last year when Chris Gayle carried his bat in the second innings to put his team in front.South Africa on the hand have fewer worries and credit should go to the way Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel have forged such a deadly combination with the new ball. The slow pitches in the Caribbean haven’t made them any less lethal. They showed what the home side lacked – bowlers with raw pace. The visitors, apart from catching up with the World Cup action at home, also celebrated their national youth day by coaching youngsters at a clinic at Warner Park.

Watch out for…

Chris Gayle: The West Indies captain was talked about at length during the one-dayers on how his performances have a direct influence on the way the team plays. If he fires, the side’s uplifted, but if he doesn’t, the rest throw in the towel. Ideally, at least one among the others in the middle order will have to put his hand up and cover the slack. If Gayle has to show more responsibility, he can adopt a change in approach and shed his attacking instincts a bit. If he minimises the risks, he can bat longer and drop anchor, allowing the rest to bat around him. The Adelaide Test is an example of the recent past. Gayle has done it before and now it’s his chance to lead by example.Paul Harris: His role in Trinidad was made redundant with Steyn and Morkel hogging most of the wickets. He was preferred to Johan Botha for the Test, despite not being in sparkling form in the last few Tests. If the pitch takes turn, Harris could play an important role. Coach Corrie van Zyl identified some technical problems in Harris’ action and said he would work on it to help him get more turn.

Team news

Kemar Roach, probably the fastest bowler in the region, was retained after missing the first game and the assumption is he has recovered from an ankle injury. If he’s fit, he should walk in, replacing either Pascal or Ravi Rampaul. The under-performing middle order will worry West Indies, so there’s a chance for Darren Bravo to come in place of probably Deonarine. Brendan Nash could be pushed down the order to No.5, where he’s more comfortable.West Indies (likely) 1 Chris Gayle (capt), 2 Travis Dowlin, 3 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 4 Darren Bravo/Narsingh Deonarine, 5 Brendan Nash, 6 Dwayne Bravo (vice-capt), 7 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 8 Sulieman Benn, 9 Shane Shillingford, 10 and 11 two among Ravi Rampaul/Kemar Roach/Nelon PascalSouth Africa are likely to play the same team. van Zyl said Harris will not be replaced by any other spinner.South Africa (likely) 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Alviro Petersen, 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 AB de Villiers, 5 Hashim Amla, 6 Ashwell Prince, 7 Mark Boucher (wk), 8 Paul Harris, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Morne Morkel, 11 Lonwabo Tsotsobe

Pitch and conditions

The short boundaries at Warner Park could lead to a high-scoring Test, if the pitch is conducive enough. Rain intervened in Trinidad and showers are forecast for St Kitts too.

Stats and Trivia

  • This venue has hosted only one Test so far, between West Indies and India in 2006. Centuries by Daren Ganga and Sarwan took West Indies to 581 and the bowlers put India under pressure, restricting India to below the follow-on target. West Indies opted to bat on and the game drifted towards a draw.
  • West Indies last beat South Africa in an international match in 2007, the Port Elizabeth Test. Since then, the losing streak stands at 17, across all formats.
  • There are milestones to be achieved – Jacques Kallis needs another 89 for 11,000 Test runs, Graeme Smith another 88 for 7000 runs and Gayle another 73 for 6000 runs.

Quotes

“Before the first Test, we spoke about the fact that we were going to be tested, not having played Test cricket for quite a while. In a three-Test series the next match is just as crucial. We can’t afford to take our foot off the gas at all.”
Graeme Smith“The batsmen can improve and a few of those 50s and 60s should have been centuries. I was impressed, however, with the manner in which we fought back after losing three wickets late on the first afternoon.”
“We have to believe in ourselves and play good, hard cricket. We have to try and make the necessary adjustments for the next Test match.”

Newcastle transfer news on Botman

Newcastle United will reportedly now ‘try again’ to sign Sven Botman in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Centre-back wanted

Given that the St. James’ Park faithful have been linked with the likes of James Tarkowski, Abdou Diallo and Nico Schlotterbeck in recent days, it is clear that they are now after a new central defender.

They have conceded no fewer than 42 goals in the Premier League so far this term, the joint-highest in the top flight along with bottom-placed Norwich City, and so a new centre-back to come in and help shore up the defence would be ideal for Eddie Howe as he looks to keep his team up.

The Latest: Botman bid

As per Fabrizio Romano, Lille have now ‘turned down’ a bid worth €35m (£29.2m) from the North East club to sign Botman, and they are planning to keep him, despite their ‘difficult’ financial situation.

However, the Italian football journalist and transfer expert has also revealed that the Tyneside outfit will ‘try again’ to sign him, although AC Milan are also interested in his signature.

The Verdict: Get it done

Given the Magpies’ defensive woes, it is imperative that they bring a new centre-half in, and fast.

Dubbed as a ‘machine’ who ‘doesn’t make mistakes’ by Lille teammate Jose Fonte, Botman could well be the answer, and given that he has played at the highest level, winning the Ligue 1 title last season and playing in the UEFA Champions League this term he would certainly elevate the quality in the side.

Nonetheless, at just 21 years of age, the Netherlands international has the world at his feet, and so he would be a real coup for the Magpies.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Tottenham’s Douglas Luiz interest

Tottenham are preparing a £32m offer for Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz.

That’s according to The Daily Mail, and, as to be expected, a number of Villa fans have been reacting to the news on social media.

Luiz has just 18 months remaining on his Villa Park contract and has recently been linked with a move to Arsenal. However, it seems as if their rivals, Spurs, are now looking at the Brazilian with the deadline fast approaching.

According to The Daily Mail, there is a sense of panic around Tottenham after missing out on numerous targets, with the club now preparing a £32m bid for Luiz.

They add that Spurs look set to fail with their pursuit of the central midfielder too though, who Steven Gerrard is keen to keep.

Reports prior to this update suggested that Villa were set to open talks over a new contract for Luiz, and Tottenham’s interest may well speed up that process.

Villa fans react

@villareport relayed The Daily Mail’s claim regarding Luiz on Twitter. This is what these Villa supporters had to say in reply, with reaction mixed over a possible exit.

West Ham: Fans erupt at Jesse Lingard claim

According to reports by The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Jesse Lingard has decided that he will not be leaving Manchester United in January.

The journalist wrote that the player has chosen to remain at Manchester United and intends to battle his way into interim manager Ralf Ragnick’s plans, ruling out a move in the upcoming January transfer window.

This comes after The Mirror reported (via The Independent) that West Ham were looking to bring in the 29-year-old on a permanent deal in the January window.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Lingard has played just 87 minutes of Premier League football this season, having come on as a substitute in each of his eight appearances. The attacking midfielder is set to enter the last six months of his contract after talks over a new deal at Old Trafford failed to progress during the summer.

The Englishman enjoyed a fantastic spell on loan at West Ham for the second half of the 2020/21 season, where he scored nine goals and produced five assists in 16 appearances for the club.

These West Ham fans erupted at the news

Ornstein took to Twitter to reveal Lingard’s decision to stay at Man United, amidst all of the transfer rumours linking the player to both West Ham and Newcastle.

A number of Hammers fans erupted in response to the news, with many in dismay following the previous rumours of a potential London Stadium return for the 29-year-old. Here’s what some of them said, with one describing Lingard’s stance as “baffling”:
