HYS: Who was Chelsea’s Man of the Match vs Southampton?

Chelsea have issued a champions response to their 2-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester United last week, giving Tottenham Hotspur what-for at Wembley in the semi-final of the FA Cup whilst re-asserting their dominance over their title rivals in the Premier League with a stunning 4-2 win over Southampton.

The six-goal thriller at Stamford Bridge was by no means an immaculate performance; sloppy defending at a set piece allowed Southampton back into the match after the Blues had already gone one-nil up, whilst concentration at the back slipped once again as former Chelsea youngster Ryan Bertrand grabbed a consolation goal in the closing stages.

Nonetheless, Chelsea were relentless going forward, carving Southampton open on four occasions with four high-quality goals.

Eden Hazard opened Chelsea’s account early on with a tidy finish, Gary Cahill’s powerful header re-established his side’s lead just before half time, Diego Costa nodded home from close range after the interval to grab his first goal in eight and the Spaniard doubled his tally late on, following some brilliant combination work between himself, Hazard and Pedro.

So, Chelsea fans, who was your Man of the Match from Chelsea’s impressive win? Let us know by voting below…

Five reasons Wayne Rooney must be dropped by Manchester United

Manchester United started their Premier League in pretty emphatic fashion against Bournemouth. Jose Mourinho’s first league match as the boss of the Red Devils saw a comfortable victory and, most worryingly, saw Wayne Rooney etch his name onto the scoresheet as he nears countless records.

The former Everton star has been the figure of hatred for many a football fan this year – more than any other year. His poor performances for England did not help his cause and his start to the campaign with Manchester United has been largely uninspiring.

Now, with the addition of Paul Pogba, Manchester United face a conundrum of sorts. Rooney’s role in the side is up for debate and Jose Mourinho faces his first really tough decision as the new gaffer. He must find a way to keep all of the large egos in the United squad happy, without denting his own significant self-loving.

Rooney must be dropped, yeah? I guess that’s the general consensus? Well, here are FIVE reasons why…

Stop the shoehorn

When you don’t really know a players best role, it’s pretty damn hard to justify their selection in the side.

Rooney has been an eight, a ten and a nine over the last 12 months and none of them look particularly natural any more. He does not deserve a place as a central midfielder, an attacking midfielder, nor does he deserve to play as centre forward whilst Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcus Rashford are fit.

It’s hard, but Rooney doesn’t really have a role in the side. When you are having to try and shoehorn him in, it’s probably a sign it’s not working.

Lad named Paul

Paul Pogba. The world’s most expensive footballer is not far away from his Manchester United debut and, as it stands, Wayne Rooney will be a member of the same eleven as Pogba.

Unless Rooney can play as the lone front man – which is questionable now – he is surely going to be a hindrance to Pogba. Pogba will need space and freedom to operate in midfield and, in many ways, needs to rule the manor.

Rooney might just prove to get in his way at times.

Ignore the name

On his recent performances, Wayne Rooney would not get in to the side if he was not such a club legend.

Of course this is the case for many players, and often it makes sense to keep the player involved, but Rooney is being treated like an integral starter. His role at the club as a leader will not have to diminish, but his form is not deserving of a starting berth and that should sink in eventually.

For the greater good

Rooney centre

The balance of any football team is more important than any individual; possibly with the exception of Lionel Messi.

If Manchester United are going to switch between 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3, it’s tricky to see how Rooney can fit in without compromising the balance of the side. The arrival of Paul Pogba means that at least one midfield berth is taken and, if sense prevails, that will be in a 4-3-3.

Could Rooney and Pogba play as the advanced pairing in a 4-3-3? No, probably not.

Energy? Nope…

For a player of his calibre, Wayne Rooney has oddly relied on his energy more than most of his talent.

His ability to cover yardage has been just as important as his technical gift and, when his fitness declines as it is, this leaves an issue. Rooney is no longer the all-action star that many thought could contribute in a box-to-box capacity and, for that reason, he is no an integral part of a Mourinho side.

Ander Herrera could play a similar role from deep to Rooney and, although he lacks much of the attacking nous, Herrera would offer an engine in midfield.

Alejandro Garnacho followed up his wondergoal against Everton with a brilliant opener for Manchester United in the Champions League.

Garnacho bags opener at GalatasarayPulls out another Ronaldo celebrationScores first Champions League goalWHAT HAPPENED?

Garnacho needed just 11 minutes to break the deadlock in United's must-win clash. The Argentine finished off a slick team move involving Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes by smashing the ball high past goalkeeper Fernando Muslera at his near post to make it 1-0. Garnacho then pulled out Cristiano Ronaldo's iconic 'calma, calma' celebration.

Garnacho's goal comes after his eye-catching overhead kick against Everton last time out. However, he was criticised for his Ronaldo-style 'Siuuu' celebration afterwards by Arturo Vidal. The former Barcelona and Bayern midfielder says Garnacho must "make his own name." The United youngster certainly seems to be doing that with his goalscoring exploits. His latest effort gave the Red Devils the perfect start in a must-win game for Ten Hag's side.

Garnacho is making himself undroppable on current form and will expect to be in the starting XI again on Saturday when Manchester United take on Newcastle in the Premier League at St James' Park.

Karim Benzema was made for the bright lights – unlike Chelsea! Winners and losers as lethal Real Madrid brush aside Blues

The Frenchman continues to torment English opposition, opening the scoring in his side's 2-0 win over Chelsea at the Santiago Bernabeu

Karim Benzema just loves playing against Premier League clubs.

The French forward opened the scoring in Real Madrid's 2-0 win over Chelsea on Wednesday night, meaning his last 11 goals in the Champions League have all come against English opposition. Imagine how many he'd score if he was playing against the likes of Wesley Fofana and Ben Chilwell on a weekly basis!

Vinicius Junior would run riot, too, in fairness. The winger danced through the Blues' back-line all evening and it was his shot which allowed Benzema to open the scoring, and his pass which Marco Asensio whipped into the bottom corner to seal victory for the home side.

This quarter-final tie is not yet over, of course. Chelsea could yet turn things around in the second leg at Stamford Bridge but that appears highly unlikely right now for two reasons: firstly, the Blues' abject form; and secondly, the continued presence of Benzema up front!

Below, GOAL runs through the winners and losers from another great night for the Ballon d'Or holder, who has now netted 20 goals against Premier League clubs in continental competition (only Lionel Messi has more!)…

  • Getty Images

    WINNER: Karim Benzema

He was always going to score, wasn’t he? Chelsea made it rather easy for Benzema to break the deadlock, but his positioning to create the tap-in opportunity should not be ignored. The French forward simply ghosted into the box, and was entirely unmarked as he turned the ball into an empty net.

Benzema was equally effective for the remainder of the contest, working in tandem with Vinicius to terrorise the Chelsea backline. He could’ve perhaps had a second in stoppage time, but will still be satisfied with his opener. And besides, he'll get another chance to add to his impressive haul against Premier League clubs when these two sides meet again in west London next week…

    LOSER: Joao Felix's finishing

How Chelsea would dearly love to have a No.9 of the quality of Benzema. The club's clueless new owners have spent a record-breaking amount of money since taking over last year and yet they've not got a single reliable goalscorer.

After all, anybody who was expecting loan signing Joao Felix to score freely for Chelsea was obviously deluding themselves. The Portuguese has never been prolific, neither for club nor country.

But nobody could have foreseen that his finishing would be this poor. When big chances have presented themselves, particularly in the Champions League, Felix has fluffed his lines time and time again. At this stage, it's not even surprising.

What shocking about his failure to score after being put clean through on goal early on was the dreadful lack of pace which allowed Eder Militao to catch up with him. Felix may have plenty of technical qualities but one really does wonder what top club would be willing to take the forward of Atletico Madrid's hands at the end of the season.

  • Getty

    WINNER: Vinicius Junior

Vinicius seems to do this every game these days. The winger tormented Wesley Fofana for 90 minutes, twisting Chelsea’s centre-back inside out with a series of cuts, feints and stopovers.

His neat run in behind led to the Madrid opener, while his electric pace stretched play for Los Blancos. He was good at keeping the ball here, too, and made the right decision more often than not.

That was exactly the case for Madrid’s second, when the winger fed a wide open Marco Asensio, who curled one into the bottom corner from outside the box. He tried to force it later on, and clearly wanted a much-deserved goal. But it was an absolutely tireless showing from a player that is somehow still getting better.

    LOSER: Wesley Fofana

Chelsea have overpaid for an awful lot of players this season but giving Leicester nearly £70 million for Wesley Fofana looks like a particularly dreadful deal. The centre-back's potential is obvious but he Frenchman is nothing like the finished article, as we saw once again at the Bernabeu.

Now, as outlined above, Vinicius Junior is capable of destroying even the most experienced of defenders but the easy with which he repeatedly breezed by Fofana was staggering. The one positive for the former Leicester City man is that he managed to stay on the pitch after picking up a booking inside five minutes, although that was mainly because he failed to get anywhere near the Brazilian thereafter.

It was on the back of “one or two mistakes” against England and West Indies that South Africa’s campaign turned sour, said Faf du Plessis after his team had secured victory over Sri Lanka. South Africa failed to defend 229 against England, then scored only 122 for 8 against West Indies, despite having come to the World T20 as one of the favourites. They were comfortable victors against Sri Lanka, however, restricting the opposition to 120 for 8, before running down that total with eight wickets and 14 balls to spare. As a result, South Africa finished third in Group 1, ahead of Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.”We played good cricket leading up to the tournament and we were consistent in the subcontinent, but a World T20 is a do-or-die tournament,” du Plessis said. “If you make mistakes, it’s not like a series where you can come back into the series. We made one or two mistakes against England and they punished us for it. Against West Indies, we made one or two mistakes as well. The teams in a T20 world cup are so close to each other, if you’re not on top of your game, teams will punish you. Tonight was a good example. Sri Lanka made one or two mistakes in their batting, and we capitalised.”Sri Lanka had moved to 45 for no loss in the fifth over, before Aaron Phangiso claimed two quick wickets to slow them. South Africa continued to strike after the ninth over, taking the last eight Sri Lanka wickets for 45 runs. Hashim Amla then led the chase with an unbeaten 56 from 52 balls. Du Plessis said it was disappointing that his team only put on their most complete performance after they had already been knocked out.”We’ve had signs of playing really good cricket through this tournament,” he said. “The England game was as good a batting performance as you will see, but obviously not a great bowling performance. Same thing with West Indies – we didn’t bat as well as we wanted to, although, on that wicket, 10 more runs would have been par. In both games we did one half of the game really well.”Tonight, bowling first – as a team that’s our strength – the bowlers did really well, and we chased down a small total, which is never easy on these wickets. It was really important for us to have a really good partnership to start off with. That was the only way the team will be in trouble – if they get wickets up front. So after the run-out, it was nice that we could make it a bit stable. It is very bittersweet to be going back to South Africa after the World T20. It was not where we wanted to be. We’ve only got ourselves to blame.”There is the possibility now that several of their older players may already have played their last World T20 match. Dale Steyn, AB de Villiers and Amla are all 32, and the next World T20 is scheduled for 2020.”The sad thing is that it’s now four years to the next World Cup – it’s not just two,” du Plessis said. “A few players here won’t be there then. That’s going to be the challenge now for the squad: to try and rest some of the senior players, to see if they want to go to the next World T20. With that you can breed some young players. There’s not a lot of T20 cricket coming up this year, so it will probably take a backseat.”

Odisha's nervous win relegates Saurashtra

A round-up of the Ranji Trophy Group B matches played on February 9, 2015

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Feb-2015
ScorecardOdisha survived several nervy moments and pulled off a slender two-wicket win to ensure that Saurashtra were relegated for the next Ranji season. Odisha needed to avoid a loss to stay away from relegation and finished fourth in Group B with six points from the win. Saurashtra needed an outright win and will now play in Group C next season.Odisha started the day on 128 for 2, needing another 155, and were nearly taken to 200 by Anurag Sarangi (83) and Govinda Podder (64). They stretched their partnership to 155 runs, the highest of the match, before Odisha’s stutter started. The stand was broken when Chirag Jani came round the wicket and trapped Sarangi with a sharp reverse-swinging delivery which the batsman left and was given lbw. Left-arm pacer Jaydev Unadkat dented Odisha from the other end when he also switched to round the wicket and bowled Podder three overs later, using sharp reverse swing.Unadkat persisted with the angle and was rewarded again when the ball crashed onto the stumps after keeping low to surprise Natraj Behara, who fell for a duck. Captain Abhilash Mallick eased some nerves for Odisha by pulling and driving Unadkat, halting the fall of wickets for at least ten overs. However, Siddharth Trivedi’s extra bounce drew an outside edge off Mallick’s bat for first slip, and Odisha slipped from 193 for 2 to 229 for 6.The No. 6 Biplab Samnatray fought hard at the other end, surviving 60 balls for nearly two hours, but he saw another wicket fall when Subhrajit Sahoo was also caught behind off Trivedi. Odisha were losing wickets but also trudging towards their target. After Sahoo’s wicket, they were only 40 adrift and Samnatray brought it down to 21 with Deepak Behera. However, Odisha got another scare when Samnatray pulled Trivedi from outside off for a skier to midwicket and Saurashtra were now only two wickets away from relegation.Deepak and Basant Mohanty finally steered Odisha home after the former crashed three fours. There was a chaotic mix-up between the two with only two runs required when Mohanty sliced a delivery to point and Deepak took off for a single to cross more than half the pitch. Luckily for him, the fielder missed a direct hit at the non-striker’s end as he dived to make his ground only to realise there was an overthrow opportunity which he ran for after losing his bat near the stumps.
ScorecardMaharashtra and Vidarbha both qualified for the quarter-finals despite the hosts’ six-wicket win in Pune. With six points from the win, Maharashtra finished second in the table and Vidarbha stayed on 24 points, level with Gujarat, but progressed to the knockouts on better run rate. Had Gujarat beaten Haryana by ten wickets instead of nine, they would have qualified instead of Vidarbha.Vidarbha were 274 for 6 at the start of the day and frustrated Maharashtra with lower-order contributions from overnight batsmen Urvesh Patel and Shrikant Wagh, and No. 9 Rakesh Dhurv. Wagh could add only 10 runs to his overnight 23 before Urvesh and Dhurv put on 88 for the eighth wicket. Dhurv’s patient 59, his first fifty of the season, featured eight fours before he was caught behind off Samad Fallah, who also took the last two wickets to wrap up Vidarbha for 391. Urvesh’s 87, which took nearly six hours, included 10 fours and Maharashtra were set a target of 164. Fallah finished with 4 for 65.The hosts were hardly bothered in the chase apart from the early wicket of Swapnil Gugale for 7 in the sixth over. Harshad Khadiwale (42) steered them towards 100 along with Kedar Jadhav (28) and Rohit Motwani (27), and even though three more wickets fell before they reached 150, Rahul Tripathi’s unbeaten 39 off 29 saw them home in the company of Ankit Bawne.
