Leeds fans react to Hasenhuttl’s comments on Che Adams

Ralph Hasenhuttl appears to have thrown the breaks on Leeds United’s pursuit of Che Adams.

The Austrian boss’ recent comments make it seem highly unlikely that the former Birmingham City man will be joining the Elland Road outfit this January.

“I cannot consider that I loan him out because I need every player, especially in the attacking position, we don’t have that many.” Hasenhuttl said about Adams.

However, despite these words, some Leeds fans haven’t given up hope of signing him.

We already knew that the Saints needed to have a striker through the door before they allowed Adams to leave the club, and some fans seem to think that a deal can still be agreed despite the manager’s comments.

Others were more pessimistic on the matter as they implored the club to move on quickly and not waste any time chasing a player who is seemingly unable to leave his current club.

One concern was that Leeds would end up like they did last January when fans were quick to blame a lack of investment from Andrea Radrizzani for the club’s failure to gain promotion.

Another section of the Elland Road faithful wanted the club to now look towards other targets.

Glenn Murray from Brighton and Andre Ayew from Swansea were both touted as options by supporters, but as of yet there have only been concrete links to the latter.

In other news, Marcelo Bielsa’s recent comments may indicate that Leeds only need one signing this month.

Jurgen Klopp is right to approach Merseyside derby with caution considering Everton’s new squad

Liverpool will be looking to make amends following their 2-1 Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain when they take on Everton in the Merseyside derby tomorrow.

Manager Jurgen Klopp, however, is wary of the threat Marco Silva’s squad poses, while playing down his club’s incredible record in this fixture at Anfield in the process.

The Breakdown

“Analyse Everton and then tell me it will be an easy game,” Klopp was quoted saying by BBC Sport. “It will be a proper fight but we expect that in the derby. That’s how derbies should be.

“He has the best squad. Since I’ve been at Liverpool, Everton was always really busy [in the transfer market] but now it’s the best-tuned squad.

“If you didn’t say that [Liverpool’s 19-year unbeaten record versus Everton at Anfield] I wouldn’t even think about it,” the German also added.

Only by full-time will there be a clearer picture of just how good this Everton squad really are. But on paper and looking at their recent games, everything points to this group of players being a strong one, as suggested by Klopp.

From defence to attack, there is quality all over the pitch. Kurt Zouma is a very solid defender on his day, Michael Keane’s form has improved drastically compared to last season, while Yerry Mina has looked like an absolute tank since coming into the Toffees’ starting XI.

Elsewhere, the likes of Andre Gomes and Richarlison have given Everton so much more technical ability further up the pitch.

Considering all of that, this is probably the strongest squad Everton are taking to Anfield in recent years, explaining Klopp’s warranted caution.

Moreno has his faults but Liverpool should give left-back new deal

Alberto Moreno should be handed a new Liverpool contract, despite dropping down the pecking order.

What’s the word?

The left-back position at Anfield is not currently up for grabs due to the fine form of Andrew Robertson.

After a slow start to his Liverpool career following last summer’s transfer from Hull City, the Scotland international became Jurgen Klopp’s first choice.

It was bad news for Moreno, who had to watch James Milner take his place in the previous season despite the fact that the experienced player is a midfielder.

Moreno is unlikely to get much game time, but the club should offer him a new contract when his current one expires at the end of the season.

Why?

Some Liverpool fans are probably scratching their heads at the suggestion given how ineffective Moreno has been in the past.

However, the Reds have a long season ahead and if they want to be fighting on all fronts, they need as much squad depth as possible.

That is something that the club have lacked before, so letting Moreno leave would give them one less man.

Even though the Spaniard is not quite up to standard, he can do a good enough job – particularly offensively – in the event of an injury or rotation.

Liverpool’s standpoint should be to keep him, but Moreno may want to consider his options if there is a chance of more game time elsewhere.

HYS: Should Jesse Lingard start vs Arsenal?

Jesse Lingard may not be the greatest technical talent Manchester United have ever produced, or even the greatest technical talent currently at Old Trafford, but there’s a reason every manager since Sir Alex Ferguson has found room for the attacking midfielder in their first-team squad.

Industrious, versatile, well-liked by his team-mates and developing a knack for scoring big goals, the England international certainly has his uses – as he showed against Watford on Tuesday night.

The Red Devils found themselves facing a Canaries comeback after going three goals up, but it was Lingard who ended any chance of missing out on the victory with a mazy run from his own half that ended in him sliding the ball beyond Heurelho Gomes.

After dropping Henrikh Mkhitaryan and publicly venting his frustrations with Juan Mata’s contributions against Brighton, that’s made Lingard – who Transfermarkt value at £10.8million – a pretty strong candidate to start against Arsenal at the weekend.

So, would you start the England international at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday? Let us know by voting below…

The worst of the worst: Manchester United transfers

“Why on earth did we buy them?” will be the words that ring out of Manchester United fan’s mouths when they look back at some of the players they’ve bought in the past, and perhaps the present.

The glory days of the class of ’92, the trophy-clad years of the late 2000’s. Both were memorable eras in the United timeline, but while those periods will be remembered best for the likes of David Beckham, Roy Keane and Ryan Giggs, there will be some less-than-memorable names amongst them.

Just as any club in the Premier League, some signings are just unfortunately destined not to work out, and with a club the size of Manchester United and the spending power they have, their ability to hand pick players from almost anywhere in the world makes them all the more susceptible to such failures.

Amongst those who have been part of that un-glorified group of United players that never made the bar are Bebe, the Portuguese starlet who appeared to have lied about his credentials on his CV; Massimo Taibi, the keeper who simply didn’t know the distance between his body and his hands and even big Belgian Marouane Fellaini, the much lamented midfielder part of the current crop under Jose Mourinho.

Who do you think has been the worst United signing however? Have your say in the poll below…

Arsenal have solved their striker crisis

It seems like a long time ago that Arsenal had a genuine world-class forward at their club, with Gooners having to endure years of Olivier Giroud, Nicklas Bendtner, Maroaune Chamakh and other sub-par options- although to be fair to Giroud, he has actually been a decent servant to the club and is better than a lot of people will make out.Anyway, the French striker will probably find it difficult to break back into Arsenal’s squad following his return from injury as Arsene Wenger has finally cracked the code in attack- and it turns out he had the answers at his disposal in his squad all along.

Alexis Sanchez has shone in a central role in Arsenal’s side this season and his superb first-half lob against Ludogorets in the Champions League this evening saw him continue a fine run of form in the competition. Scoring against Paris Saint-Germain and providing two assists in the victory over FC Basel, Alexis is proving to potentially by Theirry Henry 2.0 having moved into his new role from a wide position.

This isn’t anything new though, as Alexis’ involvement on the European stage has been superb for Arsenal. The Gunners have scored 13 goals in the past two seasons in the Champions League with Alexis Sanchez on the field and during that time, the Chilean has been involved in all but one of those efforts.

He’s not doing it on his own though, as after a decade in North London Theo Walcott is finally performing to the standard many expect from him. Supported by Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, the Englishman has been prolific this season and his numbers show that the Gunners now have two reliable attackers within their squad.

Chaos as MLS referees remarkably stood down for opening weekend of 2024 season after collective bargaining agreement rejected – with league forced to bring in late replacements

The MLS referees' labor union has turned down a new CBA offer and is now set to strike just four days before the start of the 2024 season.

MLS to begin 2024 with replacement refsPSRA rejects latest CBA offer from PROReferees set to strikeWHAT HAPPENED?

The Professional Referees Organization (PRO) and Professional Soccer Referees Association (PRSA) have failed to agree a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) ahead of the 2024 season. Now, as a result, PRO and MLS are set to begin the 2024 season with replacement referees on every level. PRO is the organization that employs referees for the league.

Their previous CBA expired on January 15, and they have been at the negotiating table since. Over a month's time, they came to a tentative agreement last week. However, when the PSRA members voted over the offer on the table, 95.8% of voters said "NO."

Starting February 18 at 12:01 AM, PSRA officials will be locked out and PRO will begin preparations for the first week of the season without their core officiating group.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWHAT MLS SAID

"It's extremely disappointing that the officials have voted against the tentative agreement on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement reached by the Professional Soccer Referees Association and the Professional Referee Organization," Major League Soccer executive vice-president of sporting product & competition Nelson Rodriguez said.

"PRO worked for months and addressed all the issues that were raised by PSRA’s bargaining unit. It is also unfortunate that the PSRA rejected PRO’s offer for a mutual no strike – no lockout commitment, which would have allowed all match officials to continue working during ongoing negotiations. PRO has informed us of its contingency plan for the upcoming MLS season, which includes utilizing experienced professional match referees supported by veteran VAR officials. We are confident in the comprehensive plan they have put in place."

WHAT PRO GM MARK GEIGER SAID

PRO general manager Mark Geiger said: "Time has been of the essence to conclude a fair deal and move forward together with renewed positivity ahead of our 12th year of supporting the growth of the professional game in the United States and Canada.

"We made meaningful progress during recent bargaining, agreeing to fair pay increases, and addressing many of the PSRA's concerns with respect to non-economic items. This represented approximately a 25 percent overall increase over 2023 when comparing salary, retainers, game fees, and benefits plus the addition of business class travel for the MLS Cup Playoffs. The result of the membership vote is disappointing.

"The PSRA has rejected a no strike/no lockout proposal from PRO through the 2024 MLS Cup, which, along with their public strike authorization, has created significant risk as the 2024 season begins. We are left with no choice but to institute a lockout and use qualified non-bargaining unit officials so that games can go ahead as scheduled."

Getty ImagesWHAT THE PSRA SAID

“We live for this game, giving it 100 percent of our dedication, experience, fitness and ability,” Peter Manikowski, president and lead negotiator for PSRA, said. “The skyrocketing growth of MLS has significantly increased demands on officials mentally and physically, and as such has increased demands on both our professional and personal time. Our members are asking not only for fair compensation at a time when the league is reporting record growth, but also for the ability to take care of themselves on the road and at home to continue officiating at the highest level that this sport demands.”

Manikowski also revealed that it is the belief of the PSRA that replacement referees do not have the qualifications to perform at the highest level of the game in North America.

“This game evolves rapidly and play happens quickly,” Manikowski said. “We think replacement officials generally do not have the current experience and level of fitness required to do our jobs. The sport and everyone involved — players, coaches and fans — deserve referees who are the best in North America at knowing the MLS game and its current rules and applications.”

A segunda-feira do Santos: foco no BR-20 e decisão política importante

No campo

No extracampo

Veja a entrevista completa.

A diretoria do clube apoia o sub-23?
