BCB sells worldwide media rights for $20.02 million

The BCB has sold its worldwide media rights for the next six years, until April 2020, to Gazi TV for the price of $20.02 million

Mohammad Isam16-May-2014The BCB has sold its worldwide media rights for the next six years, until April 2020, to Gazi TV for the price of $20.02 million. The company won the rights after quoting an offer price slightly higher than the $20 million floor price set by the board.Gazi TV became the only contender during the open bid on Friday, after another company, Mediacom, quoted a lower price. BCB president Nazmul Hassan said the board was satisfied with the outcome, as it could have been worse.”There was an open bid this morning after which the board had to take a decision in a meeting,” Hassan said. “There were two participants, one of whom didn’t meet our floor price so they became automatically ineligible. Gazi TV has paid just more than our floor price, and their papers have been okayed. As they have no financial problems, we are giving them this work. BCB will receive from them $20.02 million (net) without production cost.”I don’t look at history, but we are satisfied. We believe that we received [the bid] according to the current market situation. If nobody had taken part in the bid, it would have put us in an embarrassing position.”There were several questions during the press briefing about the Gazi TV’s links with the BCB. Gazi Golam Murtoza, the vice-chairman of Gazi TV, is a BCB director and chairman of the tournament committee. Gazi TV’s chairman, Gazi Golam Dastagir, is also a former BCB director. However, Kazi Inam Ahmed, the BCB’s marketing committee chairman who handled the media rights, said Murtoza had stayed out of any discussion on the media rights.”We want to be clear that, during the entire process our committee worked on, the BCB director who is related to the Gazi family has signed legal papers that said he will not be present during any board meeting where we will discuss the TV rights deal,” Ahmed said. “We have ensured that our process remained transparent, and since everything took place through open bidding, there was no chance of corruption.”The BCB’s last long-term deal was with Nimbus between 2006 and 2012 after which Channel 9, Gazi TV and Masranga TV have been given rights separately for home series since October 2012.

Doolan glitters but Hughes abides

If Alex Doolan is favoured to be Australia’s No. 3 batsman against South Africa in the forthcoming Tests then at least Phillip Hughes is running him to a close finish

Daniel Brettig in Johannesburg07-Feb-2014If Alex Doolan is favoured to be Australia’s No. 3 batsman against South Africa in the forthcoming Tests then at least Phillip Hughes is running him to a close finish. Doolan and Hughes demonstrated their attributes but also their foibles in the squad practice match at the Wanderers, right under the nose of the coach, selector and umpire-for-a-day, Darren Lehmann. The posting of Doolan at three meant a demotion for Shane Watson, who batted for around an hour at No. 6 before succumbing to the nicely modulated spin of Nathan Lyon on a surface that had been used by the hosts for their own preparatory fixture over the preceding three days. But Doolan’s certainty of a Test debut was eroded somewhat by a brief if breezy stay that contrasted with Hughes’ less attractive but notably more dogged and substantial occupation in the afternoon.Potchefstroom’s poor weather and the availability of a pitch at the Wanderers created the curious sight of the Australians trying their best to play a match with the 15 players at their disposal. Lehmann, Craig McDermott, John Davison and Dene Hills umpired, while Brad Haddin, David Warner and a local intern shared the gloves. Mike Young subbed in for one dicey over from Ryan Harris using only his baseball mitt and, as the day drew to a close, Lehmann could be seen prowling the covers. He had cause to ponder his batting order for the Centurion Park Test, a long-time fortress for South Africa’s pacemen. Despite entering the tour with few runs of any kind behind him – let alone relevant ones – in the Big Bash League, Doolan has been groomed for the role from the moment the tourists’ plane touched down in Johannesburg. He has repeatedly batted immediately after Chris Rogers and David Warner in the net practice roster and on Friday walked to the centre of the empty “Bullring” at the fall of the first wicket.Looking unhurried in defence and assured on the drive, Doolan glided to 25 against Harris, Mitchell Johnson and Peter Siddle, before shouldering arms to a James Pattinson delivery that seamed back at him and tilted back off stump. It was an innings typical of much of Doolan’s career, which until the past two seasons had been characterised by pretty performances that often ended before becoming substantial.Doolan first choice for first drop – Hughes

Phillip Hughes has no illusions about where he stands in the pecking order for Australian batting spots, all but conceding Alex Doolan will get the nod at No. 3 despite Hughes’ feisty 83 in the intra-squad practice match at the Wanderers.
“[Alex] was obviously selected before me, so myself coming over late I basically know where I stand, but I’m happy to be in the squad,” Hughes said. “I’m not sure what they’ll do, if I play or don’t play, to be here to help the boys is a good thing. All you can do is be ready if I do get that opportunity.”
The maturing of Hughes’ game was evident in his innings, which commenced slowly in the unfamiliar post of No. 7 before blossoming later. “You’ve got to judge the situation of the game. Early on I took a fair few balls to get going, I really wanted to get the pace of the wicket and it was that type of wicket where it was doing a little bit,” he said. “It was a really good hit out today for everyone to be out in the middle, there’s no better place to play than out there. Far better than the nets.”

Nonetheless, Australia’s planners have seemed wedded to the idea of drafting in Doolan against the South Africans to try to replicate some of his better first-class innings. These included a commanding century to guide Tasmania’s successful chase of a significant fourth-innings target against New South Wales in November, and a pristine, unbeaten 161 against Graeme Smith’s tourists in 2012.His aesthetically pleasing gait at the crease is a world away from Hughes’ idiosyncratic and endlessly tinkered technique, but the latter’s unquenchable appetite for runs and centuries (three in Tests, 24 in first-class matches, three this summer for South Australia) has kept forcing him back on to the selectors’ horizon. Occasionally edging, and eluding one beseeching lbw appeal from Siddle, Hughes hung around longest of all the batsmen despite coming in at No. 7. He did not reach a century, departing lbw to Johnson. For the evening session he was accompanied by Johnson, who struck the ball with the clarity of man still flushed with Ashes confidence, and Haddin. Others did not fare quite so well. Rogers was out to a good one from Harris, shaping in then seaming away, while Warner and Michael Clarke each perished to presumptuous swings at the first ball of a Lyon spell. Steven Smith was given out caught behind for a duck by McDermott but seemed understandably reluctant to leave so soon.Of the bowlers, Harris, Johnson and Siddle were precise, swift and persistent respectively, their places assured ahead of the rest. Pattinson did have his moments, moving the ball at a fuller length while McDermott looked on from his umpiring perch, and may well come into contention should a fourth seamer or reinforcement be required during the Tests.Selected scores: Hughes 83, Watson 34, Doolan 25, Clarke 22, Warner 22, Lyon 3-60, Harris 2-19, Pattinson 2-42, Siddle 1-34, Johnson 1-44

'Deceptive' Shami earns praise

Mohammed Shami, the India fast bowler, has drawn praise from both captains, MS Dhoni and George Bailey, for his performance in his first game of the ODI series in Ranchi. Bowling consistently around the 140 kph mark, Shami ran through the Australia top order with a first spell of 6-1-21-3, accounting for Aaron Finch, Phillip Hughes and Shane Watson.”Shami is deceptive,” Dhoni said after the game was washed out with Australia having posted 295 for 8. “He bowls quicker than you would think. What was important was he bowled full and the wickets he got, he was hitting the bails. That shows he was bowling the right length on this pitch. And at the death he was getting the yorkers in pretty consistently.”Bailey, who revived Australia after Shami’s burst in the company of Glenn Maxwell, also said the fast bowler did a fine job. “He bowled very well,” Bailey said. “He’s someone we haven’t seen in the series and he was a little bit quicker than what we expected. He certainly got a bit of movement off the seam. That’s something to be pretty aware of for the rest of the series. That’s obviously what’s going to be coming at us.”Shami himself did not think there was too much help from the pitch, although he did generate some bounce and movement off the seam and in the air under overcast skies. “Nothing special in the pitch,” Shami said. “We were bowling first and there will be something for the fast bowlers when the wicket is fresh. There was not much bounce or carry. It was a little better before the rain but once it rained, the pitch slowed down a lot.”The plan was not to give any room to the batsmen and make them play at the ball. The pitch in the beginning was assisting fast bowlers and we bowled accordingly.”Shami also said he had been spending more hours in the gym to increase his pace, but added that speed was also an outcome of the conditions. “How fast we bowl mostly depends on the conditions available,” he said. “If there is some assistance, you get inspired to bowl quicker. As we saw today, if there is some swing, some movement, you put in the extra effort.”

Corresponde a quase 10% do orçamento do ano.

Rudolph leads Titans to victory

Jacques Rudolph missed a half-century but his 49 helped Titans beat Cape Cobras by six wickets to move to second place in the Ram Slam T20 Challenge in Benoni

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Mar-2013ScorecardJacques Rudolph missed a half-century but his 49 helped Titans beat Cape Cobras by six wickets to move to second place in the Ram Slam T20 Challenge in Benoni. Chasing 117, Titans lost opener Tumelo Bodibe in the second over when he was bowled by Beuran Hendricks, but Rudolph held one end and steered the chase comfortably. He added 42 runs with Roelof van der Merwe for the second wicket and 35 for the third before being dismissed by Azhar Mahmood. Another wicket fell soon after, but Albie Morkel and David Weise completed the chase with eight balls to spare.Cobras, who were put into bat, didn’t start well. they lost both their openers for just 14 on the board inside five overs. Their run-rate remained slow as Morkel and Ethy Mbhalati bowled economical spells and picked up two wickets each. It was only due to a late charge from Wicketkeeper-captain Dane Vilas, who scored an unbeaten 59 off 44 balls, that Cobras were able to cross the 100-mark.Alfonso Thomas, the Titans captain, admitted later that it was a good toss to win on a pitch that was sticky and two-paced.

Buoyant Irfan relishing top-flight cricket

The attention may be on Yuvraj Singh, but Irfan Pathan has been quietly scripting a comeback story of his own

Andrew Fernando in Colombo14-Sep-2012

“I’m really happy with the way things are going and the zip that I’m getting off the wicket”•AFP

Four days before the World Twenty20, Irfan Pathan seems lighter. It’s not just that he looks leaner in a tight-fitting India practice shirt than he has been since his last major injury; it goes deeper than that. It’s in his disposition, the way he quips at the start of each question before answering it in earnest. Smiles, delivers each sentence with poise; his expression giving away that he is loving every moment of being inside that shirt, even when he is off the field. It’s a lightness of being, and it’s infectious. A state of mind he says he had to find to cope with frustration of his stuttering international career.Even before a back injury ruled him out for eight months in 2010, Irfan had been in and out of the national team for reasons of form and fitness. He arrived on the international scene with the pressure of being expected to be the next Kapil Dev, and perhaps he allowed that to wear him down mentally in his younger years, as his body continued to break down just as he had seemed to build some momentum in his performances. Now, though, those expectations are the farthest thing from his mind, he says. He has learnt to let go, learnt to take each match in isolation and to simply be grateful for the good days.”This is what I’ve learnt throughout the year,” he says. “I love playing, but sometimes you just put too much pressure on yourself by thinking about performance. Eventually you have to come down to the level where you love the game and you just play.”Irfan was part of the squad for the ODI tri-series in Australia early in the year, but could not convince the selectors to give him another extended run in the national team. Perhaps long-standing perceptions of him as an underachiever and too slow a seamer to be effective at the international level, were taking their toll on the opportunities provided to him.”A lot of people talk about my pace, but I’m generally never bothered. I’m not an out-and-out quick bowler. Everyone has their own gifts and I have my strengths and weaknesses as well. I’m really happy with my seam position, and I’ve done a lot of work on that. I’m really happy with the way things are going and the zip that I’m getting off the wicket.”That “zip” saw him become one of the leading wicket takers in India’s ODI series against Sri Lanka in July and August. It was a series he wasn’t initially picked for, but was drafted in when Vinay Kumar withdrew through injury. He was still fairly pedestrian in terms of pace, but what brought Irfan results was working out his opponents and bowling to a strategy.Upul Tharanga is one of the best cover drivers in the Sri Lanka team, but Irfan turned his opponent’s strength into a weakness in the fifth ODI when he pitched one slightly shorter and wider of off stump and drew the batsmen into an aerial stroke with short extra cover in place. He had tried the same ploy in the previous over and been creamed for two fours through point, having missed his length. Irfan stuck to his plan, though, and gleaned the reward. He was a man marked out for his raw talent as a 19-year-old, but eight years later, the canny tricks of experience are what are bringing him results.”I’ve tried to learn a few tricks in terms of thinking out the batsmen. The more experience I have, the better I’m getting in terms of that. I think that long term, that’s what I want to keep working on.”For now, Irfan is just happy that this latest comeback has lasted this long. “I will do whatever the team needs,” he says. Batting at three or as low down as nine, bowling with the new ball or the old, he’s simply visibly ecstatic to be part of the team at all. Having shed the ambition and expectation that crippled large parts of his career, Irfan has made things simpler for himself.Yuvraj Singh’s return to international cricket has hogged the headlines, but quietly, in the background, Irfan has been scripting a comeback tale of his own. He will hope this one will be his last.

Benign pitch, bloodyminded batsmen ruin SL gamble

There was neither juice in the SSC pitch nor brittleness in the visitors’ batting as Pakistan went on to score 300 in the first innings of a Test for the first time since January 2007

The Report by Sidharth Monga30-Jun-2012
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Mohammad Hafeez came back to form, and made it a big one•AFPSri Lanka ventured, but didn’t gain. When they won the toss, they could have easily strapped their pads on and added to their already impressive records on the SSC sleeping beauty. However, they chose to try to exploit whatever juice there might have been in the first session and to put pressure on a batting line-up that has proved brittle on this tour. Milking rocks has proved easier. There was neither juice in the pitch nor brittleness in the visitors’ batting as Pakistan went on to score 300 in the first innings of a Test for the first time since January 2007. Mohammad Hafeez quietly played himself back into form before hurtling along to his personal best, also his first score of more than 37 on this tour. Taufeeq Umar allowed Hafeez the gift of inconspicuousness as he plundered 65 out of the 78-run opening stand. Hafeez then shared the booty with Azhar Ali, letting him get his eye in after the golden duck in Galle, as he himself looted 85 off 98 in the middle session. He was 20 off 73 at lunch. As for the early juice, a grand total of one ball beat the bat in the first session, and another edge fell well short of second slip. It was always going to be a risk putting a side in, and Mahela Jayawardene might even be hauled over the coals for that, but he genuinely felt this was the only way to push for a result on his notoriously lifeless home pitch. Sri Lanka did the same against Australia last year, but back then they were behind in the series.Be that as the pitch may, the importance of this effort for Pakistan can’t be overstated. Sri Lanka’s decision to field first on a batting beauty despite a lead they could sit on says a lot about the regard they held the visiting batsmen in. Pakistan needed a solid response. And solidly they began, surprisingly against Nuwan Kulasekara and Angelo Mathews, and not the quicker Nuwan Pradeep.Smart stats

Mohammad Hafeez’s 172 is the highest score by a Pakistan batsman against Sri Lanka in Tests played in Sri Lanka. Overall, it is the seventh highest by a Pakistan batsman against Sri Lanka.

Hafeez’s personal best is the seventh highest by a Pakistan opener in an away Test. It is also the third highest by an opener in Tests at the SSC.

Since 2000, no other Sri Lankan venue has had as many centuries as the SSC (50 hundreds). The SSC is second only to Lord’s on the list of venues with the most centuries since 2000.

The 256-run stand between Hafeez and Azhar Ali is the third highest for Pakistan against Sri Lanka. It is also the third highest for Pakistan for the second wicket and the highest against Sri Lanka.

The partnership between Hafeez and Azhar is the third highest at the SSC and the highest at the venue for the second wicket. The highest at the SSC is the 624-run stand between Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene.

The double-century stand between Hafeez and Azhar is also the second highest by a visiting team in Sri Lanka, after the 258-run stand between Michael Hussey and Shaun Marsh in Pallekele in 2011.

This is only the second time since 2005 that 300-plus runs have been scored on the first day at the SSC. The previous time was when Sri Lanka made 312 for 2 against India in 2010.

Pradeep’s extra pace, when introduced in the sixth over, meant the keeper could stand back but also that the batsmen could drive him through the line. Hafeez didn’t bring the car keys in the first session, but Taufeeq repeatedly drove on the up. It was no coincidence that the openers came good for Pakistan. They have enjoyed, and deserved, rare faith for a Pakistan opening pairing. This is the 17th straight Test they are opening in, easily a Pakistan record. They have responded with five century stands, another record for Pakistan, and today’s was their sixth half-century association.Spin in the first hour was an expected sight, but Suraj Randiv created little impression. When Mathews came back, Taufeeq greeted him with three fours in the 18th over. The third of those brought up the half-century, out of a team score of 62. Taufeeq grew more adventurous, hit three more quick fours before edging a short delivery from Mathews, which was smartly taken by Prasanna Jayawardene when standing up to the stumps. A gift more than reward.Hafeez, 12 off 55 then, and Ali saw off the next 24 minutes without incident. It is likely Hafeez didn’t have a proper lunch because he feasted on the bowling after the break. It was as if he had spent the 40 minutes successfully looking for car keys. For when he came back he repeatedly charged down to the spinners, lapped them fine, and forced them to bowl short. And when they did pitch short, Hafeez was quick to smash them square. Even Pakistan’s nemesis Rangana Herath didn’t pose a threat.Hafeez brought up the half-century with a punch wide of point, and you could almost hear a sigh of relief. Ali, 13 off 35 then, and wearing a cap as opposed to Hafeez’s helmet, steadily picked up pace without doing anything that would draw attention to him. You want such innings once in a while.Hafeez didn’t mind the attention as he continuing lofting, lapping and punching unchecked. He miscued once, but Randiv saw that slice clear Kulasekara who ran back from mid-on. Hafeez was 65 then. In due time he brought up his century with a dink around the corner, and went down for the sajda.Circumstances continued to tease Sri Lanka; in the last over before tea, Hafeez edged down the leg side only for replays to show Mathews had over-stepped. Salt met wound when Hafeez pulled Mathews for four in the same over, Hafeez’s 12th boundary of the session. Azhar, on the other hand, scored so slyly even the scorers at the ground missed one of his singles, and informed him of his fifty when he had reached 51.The next challenge for the batsmen would be the new ball, and the two added 94 more after tea in the 23 overs before the event. Hafeez reached his first 150, and Ali was 20 short of a third century. Pakistan approached the new ball with caution, which might have slowed down the arrival of landmarks. Hafeez managed the third-highest score for a Pakistan batsman on the first day, Ali finished eight short of the century, but the two broke the record for the highest second-wicket partnership against Sri Lanka. The DRS debate made its obligatory reference when Simon Taufel seemed to have missed a thin edge from Hafeez in the 88th over, but everyone will agree that even the most advanced technology might struggle to bring life to the SSC track.
