Eve Jones seals Lancashire dominance as Somerset falter on home soil

Kate Cross claims two key wickets, including Heather Knight, to set up seven-wicket victory

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay27-Apr-2025Lancashire produced a convincing display with bat and ball at Taunton’s Cooper Associates County Ground to beat Somerset by seven wickets and extend their winning start to the Metro Bank One Day Cup women’s competition.Inserted on a green-tinged pitch, Somerset slumped to 89 for 6 in the face of incisive bowling from Kate Cross and Hannah Jones, who returned figures of 2 for 27 and 2 for 23 respectively. Alex Griffiths top-scored with 46 and added 56 for the seventh wicket with Amanda-Jade Wellington to threaten a meaningful recovery, but Emma Lamb bowled well at the death to claim 2 for 30 and help restrict the home side to 205 for 9.Eve Jones and Lamb then confirmed Lancashire’s superiority in a match-winning opening stand of 151 in 28.1 overs to render the outcome a foregone conclusion. Jones posted an assured 97 from 11 balls with a six and 14 fours, while Lamb contributed 52 in an innings that spanned 68 deliveries and included a quartet of fours.Seren Smale and Fi Morris saw the job through as the red rose county reached their target with 13.1 overs in hand to register a second win in as many matches in the 50-over competition. For their part, Somerset were left to reflect ruefully upon their first home game of the professional era.Ellie Threlkeld won the toss, opted to field and watched from behind the stumps as her new-ball seamers made short work of Somerset’s much-vaunted top-order. Talismanic batters Heather Knight and Sophie Luff both fell in single figures and in identical fashion, pushing half forward to deliveries outside off stump from Cross and offering regulation catches behind. Undone by late movement, fellow England international Fran Wilson was bowled by Tara Norris as the home side slipped to 36 for 3 inside 14 overs, their most experienced batters already back in the pavilion.Having pulled Norris for six to get off the mark, Charlie Dean was bowled in the act of cutting by slow left armer Hannah Jones, who then pinned Katie Jones lbw in the crease, raising the number of batters to fall short of double figures to five. When the hitherto obdurate Emma Corney, who had chiseled 35 from 79 balls, pushed a delivery from Dani Collins to deep mid-off and set off for a risky single, she was brilliantly run out by Grace Potts, whose pick up and throw scored a direct hit, reducing Somerset to 89 for 6 in the 32nd over.Overseas all-rounder Wellington inspired a fightback, hoisting successive balls from Norris over the square leg boundary to put Lancashire on the back foot for the first time. She repeated the feat against Emma Lamb, her third six raising a hard-hitting half-century stand in 43 balls in partnership with Griffiths, who made 46 from 58 deliveries. Wellington holed out to deep mid-wicket off the bowling of Lamb for a 20-ball 26 and, when Griffiths was bowled by Collins soon afterwards, the red rose county were back in charge.Somerset’s lower order continued to fight hard and an unbroken alliance of 30 for the last wicket between Chloe Skelton (24 not out) and Laura Jackson (13 not out) pushed the score beyond 200 to at least give the home bowlers a chance.Lancashire openers Lamb and Eve Jones afforded the reply solid foundations, adding 50 from 73 deliveries to see off the new ball threat of Ellie Anderson and Jackson. Pinning their hopes on spin, Somerset soon turned to Dean and Wellington, only for Jones to hit the latter back over her head for six on her way to an imperious 73-ball half century.Lamb gave half chances to Dean at cover point off Wellington and Katie Jones behind the wicket off Skelton, but survived to see the hundred partnership come up, the second 50 having come at a run-a-ball. Introduced at the River end, Skelton’s off spin proved expensive as Jones and Lamb warmed to their task, advancing their partnership to 132 after 25 overs. Lamb moved to her 50 from 63 balls and the partnership passed the 150 mark as Somerset skipper Luff rotated her spinners without reward.Wellington eventually made the breakthrough, removing Lamb lbw, while Anderson had Jones held at short third man three runs short of her hundred as Somerset at least salvaged some pride. Dean removed Katie Mack, but it proved too little too late as the visitors cruised to victory.

A temporada 2018 acabou.

Refiro-me ao Flamengo.

Australia can be first upset of many – Murtagh

Tim Murtagh is hoping to take his chance for international cricket with Ireland, starting with the visit of Australia to Belfast

As a travelling spectator during the last Ashes series, Tim Murtagh watched James Anderson’s dismantling of Australia’s batting with no little awe. Called up to play for Ireland against the Australians in an ODI in Belfast on June 23, Murtagh now has the chance to emulate Anderson – and he has happy memories of a past meeting with Michael Clarke and company to aid his search for wickets.Murtagh, 30, qualified for Ireland via his grandparents, leaving the move until a point in his career when he knew that an England call-up was out of the question. He had played for England at Under-19s level in 1999 but his medium-fast swing and seam has not caught the attention of the ECB since. England’s oversight is Ireland’s gain, at a time when Murtagh feels he is putting the ball more or less where he wants to.”I played Under-19s and I had no contact or been selected for any squad after that, so my chance is gone now, it probably disappeared a few years ago,” Murtagh told ESPNcricinfo. “They’re a very strong team, but certainly having grown up through the age groups, starting at Surrey and moving to Middlesex, I had ambitions to play for England. But it’s obvious they didn’t want to utilise my services, so the Ireland thing came in. I probably should’ve done it a few years ago if I’m honest. It’ll be a great opportunity to play international cricket.”I’m a much better bowler now than I was four or five years ago … all bowlers get to a certain stage where you start to know your game a lot better than you did as a youngster and just feel more confident because of that. Over the last few weeks my bowling has felt in really good rhythm, so hopefully leading into that Australia game I’m peaking at the right time. The last couple of years I’ve bowled better than at any stage of my career, so that’s some confidence I can take into the game in Belfast.”Murtagh’s interest in the England team extended to a visit to Australia for the Ashes of 2010-11, where he watched Anderson intently. Clarke, Ricky Ponting and others struggled to counter Anderson’s swing and accuracy, leaving Murtagh with hope that he could do something similar on what may prove to be a seaming Stormont pitch, given the rain that has drenched the UK and Ireland so far this summer. Murtagh is also bolstered by a tour match during Australia’s 2010 ODI visit, in which he deceived Clarke and Ponting and returned a snappy 3 for 43.”Any time you get Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke, guys like that out, it sticks in your memory,” Murtagh said. “It was a game I enjoyed. It was their first game in England for that ODI tour and they were a little rusty, and hopefully it will be more of the same [this time]. The Aussies will have come from back home from a series in the Caribbean, so it’ll take them some time to adjust back to English conditions and hopefully that’s something we can exploit in the game in Belfast.”They’re world-class players, but if we can catch them a little bit on the hop, it does take time to get used to conditions, especially with the amount of rain and dampness we’ve had around in the early part of summer, it might just take them a little bit of time to get used to that. We’ll have a team meeting and go through specific plans to all these guys, we’ve been sent footage of all the players from Cricket Ireland just to have a look through and start thinking about it.”Ireland’s summer is building towards the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka, but there is also the 2015 World Cup beyond. Murtagh said the team he had joined in camp in Dubai earlier this year was growing from a group “punching above their weight” to one that will become a genuine international force. The match against Australia will provide a useful measure of that growth.”The last few years watching them, they’ve punched above their weight and taken down some pretty big scalps in world cricket,” Murtagh said. “I think now having spent a bit of time out with them in Dubai, they’ve got some genuinely top-class players. I know from first-hand experience Paul Stirling, who’s at Middlesex as well, is I think one of the best T20 players going around at the moment and I’d be very surprised if someone doesn’t snap him up in the IPL in years to come.”We’ve got two games against Afghanistan in the summer as well, after the Australia game, and the points in those games will go towards that 2015 World Cup. Those are two very important games. Irish cricket wants to compete on the biggest stage now, qualifying for the T20 in Sri Lanka later this year is a massive thing, but that tournament in 2015 will be a massive thing as well. There’s some genuine top-class players that can perhaps prove a few people wrong and provide a few upsets in the years to come.”

'This phase will make team stronger' – Dhoni

MS Dhoni believes that this challenging period, during which India have slumped to six straight loss in away Tests, will help him and the team as a whole build character

Sidharth Monga at the SCG06-Jan-2012MS Dhoni believes that this challenging period, during which India have slumped to six straight loss in away Tests, will help him and the team as a whole build character. “In sport you are not destined to only win,” he said when asked of how difficult it has been to cope with the trough, especially following his early success as captain. “You’ll lose at times. You will face difficult times. That improves you as an individual, and as a skipper.”If everything comes easily to you, then you don’t really appreciate the kind of hard work that goes into it [winning]. This is a phase where I think the team will get stronger. Of course it won’t reflect in the result right now, but overall it will really help us know [recognise] the importance of winning and what needs to be done to keep the winning phase going.”There is nothing to hide behind now. India came to Australia with fit players, the best 17 available to do the job – Praveen Kumar’s absence being an exception – and had time to acclimatise, but they have lost the first two Tests. They competed for three days in the first Test, but were always behind in the game after the first session in Sydney. Dhoni reiterated the obvious fact that both the batting and bowling departments had failed.MS Dhoni goes philosophical: “You’ll lose at times. You will face difficult times. That improves you as an individual.”•Getty Images

“If you see the last two series, including this one in Australia, we didn’t score enough,” he said. “We didn’t put enough runs on the board. Of course, to win Tests taking 20 wickets is very important but also we need to give that cushion of extra runs on the board, so that the bowlers can plan the opposition out.”It is a bit of a worry, but the good thing is we saw the batsmen score runs in the second innings. Of course it was not good enough to save the Test, but we have seen in the last couple of Tests, everybody has scored at least a fifty. That gives us an indication that we need to convert those [starts] into big innings.”It needs mention here that four of those fifties came in Sydney when pitch had flattened out, and when the bowlers’ intensity was obviously down since they had a 468-run lead behind them. If anything was going to save India, it was big hundreds. The big hundreds were all scored by Australia, which has brought Dhoni’s captaincy under immense scrutiny. Especially criticised is his almost formulaic spreading of the field in Melbourne, at the first sight of the Australian lower order. Dhoni spoke about it.”Usually, when you come out of India, there comes a phase where the ball doesn’t do much, and there is not much for the bowlers,” he said. “That’s the time where we need to improve. Not only as a skipper for me, [but] the plans need to be executed really well. Because you have a few fields in mind, if the bowlers stick to that plan and execute well, it looks very good. But once it starts going wrong, it looks very difficult to manage.”What could have been done is, bowl a line where you attack a particular target, a particular area, so we force the batsman to go through the covers, and invite him for a drive. If he commits a mistake we will have slip fielders to catch him. If it starts to reverse then change the plan a bit, look to have fielders on the leg side, try to bowl as straight as possible. It’s about execution also. With more exposure that’s what the bowlers must have learned in the last couple of games. We have looked to attack a bit more with Zaheer [Khan] because he is our main wicket-taking bowler. We don’t want him to look to contain any batsmen as such.”When told that Zaheer’s economy-rate was actually the best among the Indian bowlers, and asked if attacking and taking wickets wasn’t the best way to slow the runs down, he said: “You have to back it up with good bowling. He [Zaheer] is someone who bowls very well according to the field. It’s something that can’t go just one way. You can’t have four or five slips throughout the Test match. Ultimately you have to score what the opposition scores too. It’s a combination of both. You have to come up with strategies, what works the best. It’s a balance between getting wickets and what kind of partnership the opposition is getting. If they score very quickly you may have an attacking field but it will be difficult to get the amount of runs they score.”It’s all stacked up against Dhoni the captain, Dhoni the batsman, and his team. The series can’t be won. The Border-Gavaskar trophy can technically be retained. Looking at how things stand now, though, avoiding a whitewash will be an achievement. Dhoni said the team needed to take some time off cricket. On that account the team has done well to lose inside four days, giving them extra time away from the cricket.”They [the players] have got a fair amount of exposure to the Australian bowlers in the last two Test matches,” Dhoni said. “What is important is to switch off from the game. You don’t really want to overdo it. There may be a few individuals who want to spend a bit more time on the field, but I feel it’s always important to switch off from the cricket. That really helps you de-stress a bit, and come back in a positive state of mind. I feel that rather than spending more and more time practising, what we need to do is spend some time off the field with some recreational activity and get some time off cricket.”

Fitness main concern before ODI selection

India’s laundry list of injuries in the Test series in England will test the selectors when they assemble on Saturday to pick the team for the limited-overs leg of the tour. India’s fitness levels, and the selectors’ perceived tendency to go by the players’ word on their fitness, have come under sharp criticism in the wake of India’s 0-2 deficit in England, and the possible loss of the No. 1 Test ranking that India held for 18 months. The fresh list of injuries includes those to Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh, and Zaheer Khan is yet to recover from his hamstring injury. Virender Sehwag’s shoulder is yet to be tested since his surgery. One piece of good news for India is that Ashish Nehra has recovered from the finger injury that ruled him out of the World Cup final and the IPL. Nehra has submitted his fitness certificate to the BCCI and has made himself available for selection for the Twenty20 match and one-dayers in England. Nehra told he was fully fit and was training in Bangalore. The wisdom behind selecting a squad so soon – the limited-overs games begin on August 31 – is not apparent. Yuvraj and Harbhajan have been advised a recovery period of four and three weeks respectively, making them doubtful starters, but the selectors could have waited for the third Test – starting August 10 – to see how Zaheer and Sehwag go.If Yuvraj is not selected, it could give Yusuf Pathan another chance after he managed just 42 runs in five ODIs in the West Indies. A left-field choice could be Ajinkya Rahane, who has been a massive scorer in domestic tournaments. Rahane furthered his case with a second-innings century in the Emerging Players Tournament last week.If Harbhajan doesn’t make it – or in case he is dropped after his dismal show in the Tests – Amit Mishra should join R Ashwin in the spin department after Mishra’s strong showing in the West Indies. Praveen Kumar and Munaf Patel are sure to be two of the seamers, with Nehra likely to take a spot as well. Depending on the fitness of Zaheer one or two of Ishant Sharma, Sreesanth and R Vinay Kumar could make the squad.Parthiv Patel is likely to be the reserve wicketkeeper.Likely squad: Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni (capt & wk), Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Yuvraj Singh / Ajinkya Rahane / Yusuf Pathan, Parthiv Patel (wk), Munaf Patel, Praveen Kumar, R Ashwin, Amit Mishra / Harbhajan Singh, and three out of Ishant Sharma / Zaheer Khan / Sreesanth / R Vinay Kumar / Ashish Nehra

Celtic must axe Boli Bolingoli this summer

Celtic were crowned Premiership champions this month to cap off what has been a successful domestic campaign for the Hoops and Ange Postecoglou.

With 29 wins, six draws and just three defeats in the top flight, the Bhoys ended up scoring 92 goals along the way and only conceded 22 times.

However, one man who didn’t contribute much to their title-winning season is left-back Boli Bolingoli.

Celtic signed the defender from Rapid Vienna in the summer of 2019 in a deal worth a reported £3m.

The Belgian featured in a mere eight matchday squads for the Hoops across all competitions this season and only played in two games.

In 2020, the defender effectively threw his Celtic career under the bus when he broke the government’s guidelines during the pandemic by not quarantining after a trip to Spain, which led to him being charged by the SFA.

Having been called “arrogant” by newspaper columnist Bill Leckie for his actions, the 26-year-old has reportedly been training on his own in Belgium for the past number of weeks, which doesn’t say much for his chances of redemption at Parkhead.

According to a recent report from Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph, Celtic will be looking to move the full-back out of the club on a permanent basis this summer, which to us feels like the right decision for all parties.

To further highlight Bolingoli’s downfall, his market value was listed at £2.7m by Transfermarkt in February 2020, whereas it now stands at £1.35m, highlighting a drop of 50%.

Taking all this into account, it’s safe to say that Celtic’s deal for the Belgian has turned into a disappointing one up to now.

If Postecoglou can finally get the player out the door for good and his £15k-per-week wages off the club’s books, this would pave the way for them to bring in a suitable and hopefully reliable replacement.

With that in mind, reports have already emerged linking the Hoops with a summer swoop for Hammarby left-back Mohanad Jeahze.

Should the club secure his signature, it could well be the final nail in the coffin for Bolingoli’s chances of having any sort of a future in a Celtic shirt.
