Moussa Sissoko on fire again as Mousa Dembele sale fades into obscurity

[ad_pod ]

Is the current version of Moussa Sissoko secretly a completely different player cloaked in a foolproof disguise, or has Mauricio Pochettino really pulled off a miracle which hasn’t been seen since the resurrection of Jesus Christ himself? It’s a genuine question; the scale of the combative French midfield’s transformation is as mind-blowing as it is unprecedented.

A player who was once ritually slated as one of Tottenham’s worst ever signings started in central midfield on Tuesday night against Manchester City, just over one year on from when Mousa Dembele left supporters in a sensationalist frenzy on social media and beyond with a magnificent performance away at Juventus.

Following such a technically astute performance – one epitomised by the Belgian’s seamless ability to collect the ball in pockets of space, bulldoze through the midfield, caress through balls forward and equally defuse the Old Lady as they meandered forward – it was no surprise to see fans across the world lauding his influence.

A combination of defensive destruction and playmaking poise compelled spectators to hail the influence of a truly unique player. But that fixture represented the pinnacle of 2018 for Dembele and, with just months remaining on his contract, Daniel Levy made the decision to cash in for £11 million in January.

The chairman’s business brain was never going to turn down such a financially appealing deal, but with the club’s top-four ambitions now hanging by a thread it’s one which threatens to leave a feeling of profound regret lingering over a new stadium which was designed for epic Champions League nights.

In Sissoko, however, Spurs have an unlikely miracle-worker in place to ensure the club squeeze into Europe’s elite club competition for the third straight season. Against Manchester City the 29-year-old was typically diligent in his endeavours to recover possession. He set the tone for his performance in the first-half by galloping across to dispossess Raheem Sterling with an exquisitely timed slide tackle, lunging in with the vigour that would have left hearts in mouths in times gone by. But success was never in doubt.

Supporters have become accustomed to his immaculate ability to read the game, clean up infront of the back-four and distribute forward with a technique that arguably makes Dembele look like he’s playing a different sport.

Whatever Sissoko lacks aesthetically he more than makes up for in terms of his all-action productivity. He finished Tuesday night’s encounter with a passing accuracy of 96.7%, while he also made two key passes, three tackles and two interceptions, per Whoscored: a complete display from the midfield lynchpin.

It is fixtures of the magnitude of a Champions League quarter-final which sceptics of his exponential improvement would have identified as those where his weaknesses would be unmasked. Instead, Sissoko bossed the game alongside Harry Winks and suffocated a tepid David Silva in a well-disciplined showing.

Marauding gallops forward were sacrificed to enhance the robustness of his defensive shield and creative responsibility was instead bestowed upon the shoulders of Christian Eriksen, who sent a fresh come and get me plea to Real Madrid after weeks of conspiring to stifle interest from the Spanish capital.

Alongside Harry Winks a partnership is flowering which nobody could have seen coming. Dembele who?

Levy is often depicted as the pantomime villain and questions will undoubtedly resurface if Spurs fail to secure Champions League football this season, but the fact mutters of Dembele’s name were scarcely heard against City prove his decision is close to being vindicated.

Sissoko’s performance against the champions was another huge step towards getting Levy out of jail for his controversial January call.

Another level still needs to be found in Manchester next week.

Tottenham: Demands Mauricio Pochettino must make this summer

How do Spurs do it? Title contenders one week, and the next we see them fighting to stay in the top four. It has to take its toll on everyone at the club. Still, with the season almost over, all of Spurs’ fans will be glad that Mauricio Pochettino looks (as per the Daily Mail) like he will stay for next season.

However, with the former Southampton coach looking content in north London, there is no doubt that he will have a few things he needs changing in order to try and finally get his hands on some silverware. Along with the new stadium FINALLY opening up in a couple of weeks, Pochettino will surely be hoping that next season he will have the correct backing to ensure it isn’t a first season calamity in the new ground.

For every Tottenham fan reading this, that’s the biggest fear, right? Not adapting to your new home.

With that in mind, we are going to take a look at a couple of requests the 47-year-old could make in order to bring some real success to the club.

Stop the wage cap completely

One of, if not the biggest, way that Spurs have managed to save so much money in recent years has been due to the fact that they have had a wage cap, meaning no player can earn little more than £100,000 a week (as reported by the Evening Standard in 2017).

As much as this has been a positive for the Lillywhites, it has also been their doom, with players from all across the world earning a lot more than that (would be nice, wouldn’t it?) there really is no surprise that there haven’t been many incomings in recent times.

Only recently has Daniel Levy began to allow more money to go into wages, with stand out star Harry Kane, and a few more earning over the capped price. Going forward, Pochettino and Spurs fans alike will be hoping that the cap can be completely abolished in order to help signing a higher calibre of player.

Transfers, Transfers, Transfers

No doubt one of the biggest wishes Pochettino and any Tottenham fan would have over the upcoming summer window. Over a year since a new face walked into the club, it really has to be time we see some money spent to bring in a new player. Indeed, we can only imagine how big the wish list has become, watching other teams in the league spending money like it’s going out of fashion.

Should Pochettino make these demands, it could be a very strong and exciting season for Spurs. New players, new stadium, new challenges.

Is next season the season we see silverware head to North London once again? With these demands, it could well be.

Man Utd fans rave over Odion Ighalo cameo

Manchester United stormed to victory on Sunday afternoon, not only bolstering their chances of making the Champions League next season but also earning their first derby double over their arch-rivals, Manchester City.

Anthony Martial opened the scoring in the first half by meeting Bruno Fernandes’ deft chip from a free-kick before Scott McTominay capitalised on a massive Ederson blunder to fire home the winner in injury time to seal all three points.

It keeps the Red Devils within touching distance of Chelsea in fourth place, and fans were left raving about the impact of Odion Ighalo after his second-half cameo role.

Here’s what has been said…

Ighalo was described as “absolute class” and “excellent” while one supporter claimed he had been “different gravy” and “brilliant” since joining the club on loan in January.

It was the 30-year-old’s seventh appearance for the Red Devils, where he has already contributed three goals but he is yet to find the net in the Premier League, per Transfermarkt.

Some fans would like to see the Nigerian kept at the club past his current spell, brandishing him as “priceless” while a further member of the Old Trafford faithful couldn’t think of the last time they had a forward that held up the ball as well as him.

Another believed it would be a “no-brainer” while he was also labelled as a “beast”.

There were even comparisons made to United players past and present – one suggested Ighalo was far better than Martial will ever be with another adding that he was “infinitely” better than Romelu Lukaku.

The Verdict: Should Wolves sign Hwang Hee-Chan?

Wolverhampton Wanderers appear set for a busy January transfer window.

A couple of months ago, BirminghamLive reported that the club wanted to make central additions in both midfield and in defence and just last week, manager Nuno Santo pretty much confirmed this by revealing his intentions to bolster his squad.

The latest player to be linked is Hwang Hee-Chan, who is a striker for Austrian outfit RB Salzburg. The Telegraph believe that the Korean has become one of the club’s prime targets next month, although, there’s a possibility that he’s loaned back to his current club for the remainder of this season.

It is also thought that he has a release clause with figures between €20m and €25m being touted (£17m-£21.2m) but is it a wise move? or the wrong one?

Wolves currently have just two senior strikers amongst the first-team setup, Raul Jimenez and Patrick Cutrone, the latter of which they signed in the summer from AC Milan for £16m and has rarely featured this season, starting just three Premier League games.

Here’s what the writers at Football FanCast believe…

Matt Dawson

“While Wolves don’t necessarily need Hwang Hee-Chan in January, possessing Patrick Cutrone and Raul Jimenez at their disposal, it could be incredibly shrewd to sign the South Korean and then loan him back with a view to finally playing him in 2020/21.

“Nuno’s men need to build on the quality they have and signing a player who has continuously delivered in the Champions League is a no-brainer, regardless of the players they already have in their squad. The forward has netted three goals and also registered three assists in his six European outings this term. Two of those goal involvements also came against Liverpool, so he’s got a prior history of performing against Premier League opposition.

“The main positive for Wolves would be his creativity. Having laid on seven assists in the Austrian Bundesliga, he could be someone that gets even more out of Jimenez. No one in the current squad at Molineux has created more goals this season. He’d be a very smart signing.”

Viji Jeevathayalan

“It’s a real testament to how brilliantly Raul Jimenez has settled into life at Wolves, that the club’s £16m summer signing of Patrick Cutrone has barely started in the Premier League season. The latter has played just 12 minutes of football in the Molineux side’s last seven games in the top-flight. So why on earth should the club be thinking about signing yet another striker in Hwang Hee-chan? Jimenez is the undisputed number one option for Nuno Espirito Santo, and Hwang’s arrival would simply see him rot on the bench. It would be a tragic waste of money. The RB Salzburg forward has shown that he is a good player through his displays in the Champions League this year – he has scored three times and provided five assists. But Wolves have no need for him at the moment, and they should just keep the faith in Cutrone.”

Danny Lewis

“This would be a pointless signing for Wolves to make, considering Patrick Cutrone hasn’t really had that much of a look in, despite getting seven goal contributions from eight starts and 14 substitute appearances across all competitions. Hwang Hee-chan has shown that he is a talented player through his performances in the Champions League, but even so, it would be a waste of money and quality to have him fighting with Cutrone to be the main back-up striker to Jimenez. Wolves would be much better off spending that money on a centre-back or centre-midfielder.”

Lewis Blain

“This move should be a no-brainer for Nuno Santo and Wolves. The Korean’s record, as mentioned above, speaks for itself. If the club truly want to become regulars on the European stage and at the top end of the Premier League for years to come, then they need serious strength in depth, and that will only come with additions like this. Currently, the Portuguese boss heavily leans on Raul Jimenez with Patrick Cutrone suffering from a lack of game time, but that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t add Hwang Hee-Chan to his armoury. He brings Champions League experience and the sort of dynamism that no other player has at the club – you only have to look at the way he span Virgin van Dijk into next week earlier this season to see that. Pull out all the stops, Fosun.”

Leeds fans bash Baker after first league start

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Leeds fans have been reflecting on their win over Reading, and they’re not very impressed by Chelsea starlet Lewis Baker.

Leeds fans are very excited for Izzy Brown to return from injury but his fellow Chelsea loanee, 23-year-old Baker, is getting absolutely crucified after his first league start.

Marcelo Bielsa gave Baker the nod as one of the advanced midfielders playing just behind Kemar Roofe on Tuesday, but withdrew him at half-time after a poor first 45 minutes.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”335560″ player=”12034″ title=”FIFA Awards”]

The Whites were able to grab all three points courtesy of Stuart Dallas’ second half strike, but Reading certainly made life difficult for the hosts.

Baker registered one shot, zero key passes and zero successful dribbles, and the England Under-21 international was reportedly spotted leaving the stadium immediately after the full time whistle.

Victor Orta’s transfer dealings are now under the spotlight once again, as nearly all of his recent captures are either injured or performing poorly.

Philipp Max would suit Tottenham’s system down to the ground

Tottenham remain hot on the heels of the league leaders following an excellent start to the Premier League season.

Spurs made history by becoming the first side since the transfer window was created in 2003 not to add a single player to their squad. Mauricio Pochettino placed his trust in his current roster of players and instead handed out long-term contracts to his key players. Fears that Spurs would be left behind by their rivals were quickly eased with Tottenham winning three of their opening four fixtures.

The transfer window may be closed, but many Spurs players are still being linked with an exit. Moussa Dembele is being rumoured with a move to China while Toby Alderweireld still has less than one year on his contract amid interest from Manchester United. Danny Rose could also leave the club after a move to PSG fell through in the final week of the window.

Should Rose depart, Tottenham should make a move for Augsburg defender – Philipp Max. Valued at £15.3m by Transfermarkt, the 24-year-old enjoyed a stellar season in the Bundesliga last year and reportedly attracted interest from Everton who instead signed Lucas Digne from Barcelona. When the window reopens, Tottenham should aim to bring him to North London.

Max scooped a remarkable 13 assists from defence last season, breaking the Bundesliga record for defenders, highlighting the threat he poses from the left flank. With a world-class finisher like Harry Kane in the box, his assist tally would only increase. Max also created an incredible 75 chances last season meaning the England captain would be licking his lips at the thought of his arrival.

The German would be a serious upgrade on Rose that Pochettino would be foolish not to consider.

Pundit backs Tottenham Hotspur to edge out Liverpool

Tottenham Hotspur have an opportunity to extend their unbeaten run in the Premier League to seven matches with a win over Liverpool at Wembley this weekend, and Paul Merson thinks that they will do just that.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men have had an enjoyable few days following an impressive performance against Real Madrid in the Champions League.

The North London outfit managed to keep the Spanish giants at bay thanks to some heroic goalkeeping from Hugo Lloris.

[ad_pod id=’leo-vegas’]

In the end, the match finished 1-1, which put the club in a strong position to move into the last 16 stage.

On Sunday, Tottenham face a Liverpool side that ran rampant against their Champions League opponents Maribor on the same night.

Jurgen Klopp’s men earned a 7-0 win – the biggest ever away victory in the tournament by an English club.

Merson believes that both Spurs and Liverpool are strong going forward, but the Reds’ defensive frailties gives the hosts the edge.

The former Arsenal midfielder said in his Sky Sports predictions that Tottenham would win 3-2.

“Massive game. I’m going for a high-scoring clash, 3-2 to Tottenham. I think both teams going forward are great. I have watched Spurs at Wembley, and they’re not the same team. They used to tear teams apart at White Hart Lane, flying out of the traps and blowing teams away within 20 minutes. You watch them at Wembley and the build-up is slower, pedestrian. But I think this is a good game for them, because Liverpool will have a right go and need a win.”
