Crystal Palace must secure move for Pepe

Crystal Palace are plotting a summer move for FC Porto winger Pepe according to Portuguese outlet A Bola, via Sport Witness, and have reportedly already ‘collected information’ on the player.

The 25-year-old Brazilian joined the Portuguese outfit from Gremio last summer and is also subject to interest from Arsenal, having scored six goals and registered five assists in 40 appearances across all competitions this term. Moreover, Pepe reportedly has a €70m (£59.4m) release clause, which could cause Palace a real issue.

However, the 25-year-old would undoubtedly be a quality addition to Patrick Vieira’s squad.

Palace should sign Pepe

Vieira has had an excellent first season as Crystal Palace manager, with the Frenchman subject to doubts regarding whether or not he would be able to keep the Eagles in the Premier League.

The 45-year-old has added plenty of bright young talent at Selhurst Park, with the south London outfit certainly a more exciting prospect going into next season, but there are still some areas of the squad which have ageing personnel or could do with extra quality in depth.

The Eagles have strong options out wide in Wilfried Zaha, Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze, but they could certainly do with more options in case of unplanned absences.

Moreover, there have been concerns that Olise could be lured away from Selhurst Park after just one season, with the 20-year-old’s current contract reportedly including a £35m release clause, although there are works behind the scenes on handing the French youngster a new deal to extinguish any fears regarding his future.

Therefore, adding Pepe to his ranks would certainly be a wise from Vieira, although the winger’s goal contributions don’t justify an asking price anywhere near £59.4m. At 25, he is at an excellent age where he already boasts ample experience but still has huge potential.

The £13.5m-rated Brazilian averages an 84% passing accuracy whilst providing 1.1 key passes per match. Moreover, he completes 1.3 dribbles per game at a 56% success rate whilst being right footed, as opposed to Olise being left-footed.

In the Premier League this term, the 20-year-old has completed 1.1 dribbles per match at a 45% success rate whilst having a slightly lower passing accuracy at 81% and averaging 0.9 key passes per game.

Although Zaha will be at the top of the pecking order after his 13 Premier League goals this term, having other options would certainly improve Crystal Palace’s squad depth, with Pepe being a player that Vieira could certainly adore given his evident talents.

Gilchrist to captain Kings XI Punjab

Adam Gilchrist, the former Australia wicketkeeper, will be the captain of Kings XI Punjab for the fourth season of the IPL, the Punjab coach Michael Bevan has said. Bevan said Punjab bought Gilchrist, who led Hyderabad to the trophy in the IPL’s second season, specifically for his leadership skills. Gilchrist was bought on the first day of the auction for $900,000.”The main reason we picked him was because he is the captain,” Bevan, who was appointed Punjab coach four days before the auction, said. He also brushed aside any fears of form or fitness issues Gilchrist might have considering he is the second oldest player in the IPL at 39 years. “Even if he is not at the peak of his career, I still feel as a leader he has a lot to offer. In Twenty20 cricket you are not asking the guy to strike at 120 in the opening position. You are asking for guys to strike at 140 or 150 and Gilly is the type of player who can turn in three or four match-winning performances over the season.”It was Gilchrist who contacted Bevan, with whom he played alongside in the 1999 and 2003 World Cup winning sides, as soon as he heard the news. “He pretty much rang back straightaway and has been involved in the team-building process in the auction after that. That is a great sign; him lending his experience with some of the players he has played with. As a coach, you want your captain immersed in what we are trying to achieve.”Gilchrist was the first player bought by Punjab, on January 8. They proceeded to buy 10 more players, with only four Indian players, the backbone of any IPL team, adding wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik, batting allrounder Abhishek Nayar, legspinner Piyush Chawla and seamer Praveen Kumar.Bevan reckoned spending big money on some of the Indian players might have been a gamble, but he did admit he was new at the IPL poker table. “I was not sure paying two million for a really good player would pay off, but we will wait and see.” Punjab had at their disposal a purse of $9 million, but came out of the auction with $2.17 million left unspent. Though he did not say it plainly, Bevan confessed Punjab might have erred in not risking more money on players. “Perhaps we misread the market a little and misread the pricing. There was some fever-pitch bidding, with Indian players going for sky-high prices which we never expected.”Even though he knew Indian players would go for pretty high prices because there were only 48 of them, Bevan was surprised by how much some of the younger players got. “There was always going to be a premium on the Indian players. We were happy to go with some good solid younger players, but even they went for lots of money.”Punjab lost out on several players whom they started to bid for, only to be outbid by other franchises. Mahela Jayawardene, who played for them in the first three seasons of the IPL, was bought by Kochi for $1.5 million after Punjab had made a $1.4 million bid. They bid the same amount for Yuvraj Singh, Punjab’s captain in the first two seasons and their icon player, only to lose him to the new Pune franchise for $1.8 million. They also lost bidding wars for Australia allrounder Cameron White, India batsman Rohit Sharma, and allrounder Irfan Pathan, who was part of their team for the first three seasons.Bevan pointed out that the team owners had decided to stick to a certain budget. “As a coach you also got to go with your budget constraints and hence we had to work out the pricing. It is all part of the big picture. It is just not having the ability to get anyone you want.”Punjab will now have to fill up the rest of their squad with the uncapped Indian players and India Under-19 players.Bevan admitted that taking over as the Punjab coach is the most high-profile job he has ever done, and said the fact he entered late into the piece meant he was a little bit nervous before the auction. But he remains confident of Punjab’s prospects because of the presence of Gilchrist.

Liverpool: Jones makes Rice transfer claim

Liverpool will be among the clubs interested in signing West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice when the summer transfer window opens, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The lowdown: Contract rebel

A recent report from The Guardian has claimed that the 23-year-old has rejected a third offer a new deal at the London Stadium and is ‘open’ to a move away at the end of the season.

With Rice under contract until 2024 (Transfermarkt), Hammers boss David Moyes has previously placed a £150m price tag on the England international, who previously came through the Chelsea academy.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-29/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Amidst growing interest from Manchester City and Manchester United, the Reds have now been tipped to show their own admiration for Rice…

The latest: Jones makes Rice transfer claim…

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones claimed that Liverpool will be weighing up a possible swoop for the 29-cap England ace.

The journalist stated: “Of course, they’re going to be interested in Declan Rice because if Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea have had that player on their radar, then you kind of at least have got to consider whether you’re going to need him.”

The verdict: An unnecessary expenditure

Currently, Jurgen Klopp has Fabinho as the only recognised senior defensive midfielder within the Anfield squad, although Jordan Henderson, James Milner and youngster Tyler Morton have all deputised in the role at times this season.

Nonetheless, the powerful Brazilian midfield general has enjoyed a stellar campaign, with five goals and four assists in 44 appearances across all competitions; and despite the lack of natural options in that position, spending anything like the mooted £150m on Rice simply isn’t a realistic prospect for the Reds.

Instead, as the two Manchester clubs potentially do battle for the 23-year-old’s signature, Klopp and incoming Anfield sporting director Julian Ward are more likely to set about pursuing an affordable alternative.

Using the FBRef comparison tool, statistically this term, 21-year-old Nice starlet Khephren Thuram-Ulien is the closest match to Rice, whilst Liverpool’s own Fabinho also appears in the top 10.

West Brom must secure Anderson transfer

West Bromwich Albion have had a rather dismal season in terms of trying to escape the Championship and win promotion back to the Premier League.

With 44 league games played, the Baggies have won 16, drawn 13 and lost 15, showing just how unpredictable they can be.

In those games, the team have scored 47 goals and conceded 45 along the way.

One figure, in particular, that hasn’t contributed much to their campaign is Kenneth Zohore.

After appearing in West Brom’s two opening league games of the season, the striker hasn’t been in the squad since.

With seven league games to his name for the U23s, the 28-year-old has found the back of the net five times.

Having been described as “lazy” in the past by Neil Warnock, Zohore has, in fairness, had troubles with injuries that have kept him out of action.

Despite this, the attacker could well be in the firing line during the big overhaul that Steve Bruce has spoken about for the upcoming summer transfer window.

With that in mind, one player the Baggies could look to bring in as a potential replacement for Zohore, should the club feel the need to let him go, is Elliot Anderson.

Recently linked with a move to West Brom, Anderson has been on loan with Bristol Rovers this season from Newcastle United. During his time there, the attacker has scored six times and delivered three assists in 19 League Two appearances.

To further highlight what a dangerous player he is going forward on the pitch, only two other players for Rovers have managed to rack up more shots at goal than Anderson (63).

Praised for his “superb” performances for his current club by Joey Barton, the 19-year-old could be an ideal addition to Steve Bruce’s side as a young attacking prodigy aiming to play as much football as possible.

With the report linking the Baggies with the player claiming that Newcastle want their youngster to get some experience in the Championship next season, this could put West Brom in a good position to secure his signature.

Moving forward, securing a deal for the Newcastle prodigy should definitely be in West Brom’s thinking for the summer, especially if they could be able to get an option to buy him if they do get him on an initial temporary loan basis.

Spurs: Italian report makes Martinez claim

According to a report from the print edition of Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport (via SempreInter), Tottenham Hotspur are among the leading contenders to sign Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez.

The lowdown: Spurs’ interest

Spurs have been continually linked with a move for the 24-year-old for some time and it appears that the interest remains heading onto the summer transfer window.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The reigning Serie A title holders could once again cash in on a big name having sold Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea in 2021 for an eye-watering £97.5million (Sky Sports).

This time it could be Tottenham that benefits as manager Antonio Conte eyes up a reunion with Martinez…

The latest: Italian media names three suitors

As per Gazzetta dello Sport (via SempreInter), the Lilywhites, alongside Atletico Madrid and Barcelona, ‘have emerged as the main candidates’ to sign the Argentina international.

It’s claimed that the Nezzarruri will demand a fee in the region of  €60-70million (£50-58million) for the man once hailed as ‘spectacular’ by Lionel Messi.

Furthermore, the interest from N17 is believed to be increasing as Tottenham transfer chief Fabio Paratici attempts to reunite Martinez with Conte after the 37-cap ace netted 40 goals under the Italian’s tutelage at the San Siro.

The verdict: At all costs

This is a deal Spurs should be desperate to complete regardless of Harry Kane’s situation at the club this summer.

Martinez has often operated in a strike partnership, most notably alongside Lukaku, and therefore would likely have no issues linking up alongside pass master Kane for the Lilywhites.

So far this season the Argentinian has scored 17 goals and provided three assists in 41 appearances across all competitions including a UEFA Champions League stunner against Liverpool.

Signing a player of this pedigree for the mooted asking price would be a superb piece of business.
