Arsenal’s Joe Willock produced an impressive display against Dundalk

After giving some of his fringe players the chance to shine on Thursday night, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta would no doubt have been happy with what he saw.

The Gunners ran out comfortable 3-0 winners over Dundalk in the Europa League, making it two wins from win to start off their journey in Europe.

And one of the team’s goal-scorers on the night – Joe Willock – had a particularly impressive game in the middle of the park.

The England U21 international was joined by Mohamed Elneny in central midfield, and with the Egyptian tasked with holding and screening the defence, Willock was allowed to join in with attack.

That licence to roam forward was partly why he got himself on the score-sheet, receiving the ball inside the penalty area after an Arsenal counter-attack, before unleashing a fierce drive into the roof of the net.

Despite the fact some of his stats seem very questionable – he lost possession 20 times and lost 13 of his 14 duels – his overall energetic presence and willingness to take risks would have been pleasing for Arteta.

Speaking after the game, Willock himself said that he was pleased with his contributions, saying: “I thought I did well, I thought I contributed with a fair amount. That’s what I want to do, I want to score goals, create goals and to get an assist and a goal, I’m really happy to do that. I just want to push on and do it more in the Premier League.”

The £45k-a-week earning starlet will be hoping that his performance against Dundalk gives Arteta some food for thought going forward.

Tottenham Hotspur: Christian Eriksen ‘offered’ to Spurs in deadline day transfer twist

According to a report from Football Insider, Spurs have been offered the chance to re-sign star playmaker Christian Eriksen – gifting chairman Daniel Levy an opportunity to secure the return of another club legend on loan alongside Gareth Bale, with Inter paying 50% of his £200,000-per-week salary.

It has been quite the transfer window for Tottenham even before deadline day, with the club securing deals for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Matt Doherty, Joe Hart, Sergio Reguilon, Carlos Vinicius and the sensational return of icon Bale.

Now, Football Insider report that Spurs could land yet another Lilywhites legend in ex-playmaker Eriksen – as Inter Milan are keen to offload the Dane in a bid to trim their wage bill.

While this rumour would appear unlikely given Tottenham’s business in the attacking areas, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano hinted to the Last Word on Spurs podcast last month that Levy had asked about taking him back – as per one of his sources at the time.

However, while there may have been past intrigue, Spurs have already landed Vinicius and Bale as stellar further attacking options – with the only incentive to swoop being the lack of a creative midfield player.

Star man Dele Alli, who has been linked with a move away this window, looks more and more likely to remain – and it’s now debatably a long shot that Spurs will take the Serie A giants up on their offer to take Eriksen back, given Alli’s presence.

Described as ‘amazing’ by ex-Lilywhites boss Mauricio Pochettino, the Danish star’s quality would certainly help Spurs in their quest to win a trophy, but Levy would still have to fork out £100,000-per-week wages.

As per recent reports, Tottenham need to offload players in an effort to offset heavy spending, so it now looks unlikely Levy would be willing to pay Eriksen’s large salary.

Leeds target Dan James wants Old Trafford stay

With just a couple of weeks to go in the transfer window, Leeds United still have work to do.

The Whites may have won two of their opening three Premier League games, but there are areas the club still want reinforcements in, with one of those being a new winger.

The Yorkshire outfit have been linked with a number of wide players this window, with their pursuit of Ryan Kent being highly publicised, but the most recent player they’ve reportedly been tailing is an old target, Daniel James.

Leeds famously failed to sign the winger in January 2019, but The Sun claimed last week that they were planning to go back in for him.

However, it seems as though that deal won’t come off as Sky Sports are now stating that the youngster has told Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that he wants to stay and fight for his spot in the team.

The report also states that Leeds have made a loan offer for the former Swansea City man, and while a move doesn’t look likely at the moment, Sky state that the situation could change depending on whether or not Man United make any more signings in the coming weeks.

With United apparently still chasing Jadon Sancho, the situation may end up changing on that front, but as of right now, James wants to stay at Old Trafford.

Coventry: BoyleSports announced as new shirt sponsor; lucrative deal could help Mark Robins’ transfer plans [Opinion]

Coventry City manager Mark Robins has been handed a financial boost as his preparations for next season continue to take shape.

The Sky Blues boss produced the goods last season as he guided his side to the League One title and promotion to the Championship. In preparing for next season, significant signings have been made to bolster his squad in an attempt to cement themselves as a second tier club.

Gustavo Hamer and Julien Dacosta were two of the first players to arrive at the club, whilst Marcel Hilssner has also been joined by former Aston Villa youngster Callum O’Hare and Ryan Giles.

With the new season fast approaching, Robins has now been handed a cash boost with BoyleSports becoming the club’s main sponsor, which will see their logo in the front of the playing kit and adult replica kits.

The new deal is the club’s highest value front of shirt sponsorship deal in more than a decade and, while the exact figure was undisclosed, it was reported as a ‘significant deal’, as per Coventry Live.

“We’re very pleased to welcome BoyleSports to Coventry City as our new shirt sponsor and principal club partner,” said Coventry chief executive Dave Boddy.

“This is a significant deal for the football club and will provide much needed and significant revenue for the club, helping to support Mark Robins and the team in preparation for the upcoming Championship season.

“BoyleSports have already shown great enthusiasm about their new sponsorship and supporting the Sky Blues, and we look forward to working with them.”

Robins’ excellent transfer business this summer could now be followed by a couple of more signings, with the club’s finances set to be boosted by the BoyleSports sponsorship deal.

With the aforementioned players joining the Sky Blues, Robins has added quality in several positions throughout the pitch, although his centre-forward options are still a little thin on the ground with only Amadou Bakayoko, Maxime Biamou, Jordan Ponticelli and Matt Godden in the squad.

Brighton & Hove Albion: Alexis Mac Allister is "ready" to impress for the Seagulls, says Graham Potter

Brighton youngster Alexis Mac Allister is “ready to go” and “itching to play football” after an abortive start to his career at the Amex Stadium, according to Graham Potter.

The Seagulls return to Premier League action when they host Arsenal on Saturday and the manager gave a positive update on the 21-year-old Argentina midfielder.

Potter told Brighton & Hove Independent: “He’s not really been able to integrate himself or adjust to British culture as much as he would like, because for the first few weeks of lockdown he was stuck in his flat.

“But he’s a professional and determined guy and came back in really good shape, like the rest of the players. He’s itching to play football. He’s had a tough introduction to life over here. But he’s got a smile on his face and he’s ready to go.”

Mac Allister was signed by Brighton back in January 2019 but spent last year on loan in his homeland with Argentinos Juniors and Boca Juniors, with one goal and two assists in 13 games for the latter.

The twice-capped Argentina international returned to England at the start of this year and has thus far played only once for the Seagulls, coming on as a substitute for the final 10 minutes of the goalless draw at Wolves in March.

He showed some impressive flashes during that cameo at Molineux, registering one shot and putting in three crosses, and could well have built on that appearance had it not been for the coronavirus-enforced postponement of the Premier League a week later.

Brighton have not been the most fearsome of attacking forces in the Premier League this season – Neal Maupay is their only player to score more than three goals in 2019/20, while Leandro Trossard is their leading assists provider with four (as per TransferMarkt).

There could be a niche for someone to step up and add a greater impetus in the final third and hopefully Mac Allister can be that man. He may only be taking the first baby steps in his Brighton career now but he might yet prove to be a timely addition to the side as they bid to secure their Premier League status for another season.

Newcastle United: Agent of Allan Saint-Maximin gives worrying update on his future – Opinion

The agent of Allan Saint-Maximin has given a rather worrying update on the future of the Newcastle United ace, as he has claimed that his client would like to play in the UEFA Champions League, according to Calcio Napoli 24.

As per the outlet, Kurtys Saint-Maximin, who is his brother as well as his agent, told the publication that he does not know where the future of the 23-year old lies but admitted that he would like to play in Europe’s elite competition.

Indeed, this could be worrying for members of the Toon faithful, as they are very unlikely to be able to offer him that for the next season at least given their current position in the Premier League table, and if the proposed takeover of the Tyneside club falls through, then Champions League football may well be a long way away.

In addition, other clubs who have qualified for the competition for the next campaign may well come in for Saint-Maximin given just how well he has performed so far in this term, and the possibility of playing in the Champions League may arguably be too much to turn down. Paris Saint Germain have already been reported as a potential destination, as have Arsenal (Le10Sport).

The Frenchman has arguably been very impressive so far in the top flight, scoring three goals and four assists in 22 games, while also creating eight big chances and averaging 4.6 successful dribbles and 1.3 key passes per match (via Sofascore).

The winger is surely going to attract some interest from big teams in the upcoming summer transfer window, and it will be up to the Magpies as to whether they can keep hold of him.

Tottenham Hotspur: Another European club joins hunt for Pochettino favourite

Tottenham star Jan Vertonghen will not be short of suitors ahead of the transfer window, as another team have thrown their name into the mix.

According to Fotomac, Galatasaray are targeting Vertonghen in the summer as they are looking for replacements for Christian Luyindama and Marcao.

The Tottenham defender will become a free agent in a matter of weeks, amid interest from Serie A sides Inter Milan and Fiorentina.

The Turkish newspaper, as relayed by Sport Witness, claims the Lions are scouting for alternatives.

Galatasaray are ready to offer Vertonghen’s representatives a two-year-contract, reportedly worth €2m per year, which roughly equates to £1.78m.

Although the Belgian was a favourite of former boss Mauricio Pochettino, featuring in over 200 games for the Argentine, his deal is set to expire at the end of June.

The Premier League announced last month that clubs are able to offer extensions to out-of-contract players as a result of the economic uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus crisis.

However, Mourinho decided to call off talks with Vertonghen’s agent, and it seems the Belgium international is ready to explore his options as a free agent.

After arriving at White Hart Lane from Ajax in 2012, the 33-year-old has formed a solid partnership with Toby Alderweireld, playing in more than 300 games for the Lilywhites, scoring fourteen goals and creating seven assists in all competitions.

The Evening Standard recently revealed he plans to remain loyal to Spurs and will at least finish this season as he will be unable to play for another club until next term.

As it stands, the Turkish side’s offer falls short of Vertonghen’s wage demands. The Times reported that Fiorentina have hit a stumbling block over his £3.5m-a-year wages.

Nevertheless, the veteran is in hot demand as the transfer window approaches.
