Liverpool linked with Raheem Sterling move

Even though Liverpool wingers Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane have contributed 12 out of the 22 Premier League goals the Merseyside club have scored so far this season, it seems as though the Reds have their eye on signing another attacking wide player to add to their squad, one that would be very familiar to the fans.

What’s the news?

According to Germany-based journalist Christian Falk (via Sport Witness) Liverpool are one of the club’s interested in signing Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling next summer.

That’s if he ends up leaving the Citizens after recently saying he would be open to a move away at some point.

Anfield return?

Before he moved to City in 2015 from Liverpool for a reported fee of £49m, Sterling had made 129 senior appearances for the Reds in which he scored 23 goals and provided 25 assists in the process after making 22 appearances for their U18 side.

Since joining the Manchester club, Sterling, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £300k-per week according to Spotrac, has gone on to make 304 appearances for City across all competitions, racking up a total of 115 strikes and 89 assists, winning a whole host of trophies along the way, including the Premier League title.

Despite being labelled as an “outstanding” player by former Reds defender Jamie Carragher, we feel that quite a number of Liverpool fans would be unhappy to see Sterling make a return to Anfield.

After he departed Merseyside, a host of supporters refused to take things lightly, brandishing the attacker a snake. That was despite claiming he’d left the club to develop, which he seems to have done given the goals and assists he’s totalled as well as the major honours.

Fortunately for Liverpool fans, Sterling has admitted he would open to a move abroad if he were to leave the Etihad next summer. Thus, there is a sense that a return to Liverpool probably won’t happen, especially with City likely to be unwilling to give away one of their best-attacking talents to a Premier League rival.

Moving forward, we think Liverpool should stick with Mane and Salah for the foreseeable future and not bring Sterling back to the club.

Wolves fans hail Connor Ronan goal

A number of Wolves supporters have hailed loanee Connor Ronan after he scored a stunning goal for St Mirren against Rangers on Sunday.

Wolves were unable to record four Premier League wins in a row on Saturday, falling agonisingly short of achieving that goal. Bruno Lage’s side drew 1-1 away to Leeds United, with Rodrigo’s penalty in the dying seconds earning Marcelo Bielsa’s team a point.

Away from the Midlands, Ronan had a productive weekend at St Mirren, even though he ended up on the losing side  at home to the Scottish Premiership champions.

The 23-year-old midfielder, who joined on loan earlier in the year, scored a wonderful long-range effort to put his side ahead [clip shared via Talking Wolves on Twitter], netting from all of 30 yards.

It was a great individual moment for the youngster, who has been loaned out frequently in the last few years, playing for the likes of Portsmouth, Walsall and Blackpool, among others. The last of his 13 Wolves appearances came four years ago yesterday.

Wolves fans hail Ronan’s strike

These Wolves fans on Twitter erupted over Ronan’s “absolute zinger” of a goal against Rangers, with many hoping that he will get a renewed chance at his parent club.

Everton and Aston Villa want Harry Winks

Many Everton fans have been left fuming as some transfer news emerged on Harry Winks.

As per Caught Offside, a source from Tottenham Hotspur has now claimed that it will be a fight between the Toffees and Aston Villa to sign the midfielder on loan in the January transfer window.

Brighton and Hove Albion have also shown an interest, but it looks like it will be a battle between the other two Premier League clubs for his signature.

It can be argued that Winks would not be an upgrade on Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure in the centre of Everton’s midfield, given that he has averaged fewer tackles and dribbles than the Toffees duo in the Premier League so far this season.

Also, he has only managed to score four goals and make just five assists in 179 games over all competitions for Spurs (Transfermarkt).

These Everton supporters fumed as the transfer news on Winks was shared on Twitter, with one even going as far as to claim that the Spurs midfielder is a ‘terrible player’:

Gold drops exciting Skipp claim

Speaking in a football.london Q&A, reliable reporter Alasdair Gold has backed an exciting Tottenham Hotspur claim involving Oliver Skipp.

The Lowdown: Skipp set for new deal?

As per recent developments, it appears the impressive Spurs starlet could now be handed fresh terms at N17 after a brilliant start to 2021/2022.

Indeed, as per The Athletic, Tottenham ‘would like’ to extend Skipp’s current contract which, as it stands, is set to expire in June 2024.

The midfielder wowed on loan at Norwich City last season and has gone on to become a fixture in Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.

The Latest: Gold backs exciting claim…

Now, speaking in a football.london Q&A, Gold has backed this claim when asked by a supporter if Spurs could extend his deal.

“I think it’s just a matter of time,” he explained.

“He’s a key starter now and he’s only going to get better. He loves it at the club and is a far more developed player than the one who signed a four year deal 15 months ago, so I think that will be sorted sooner rather than later.”

The Verdict: Get it done now…

The Englishman has been one of Tottenham’s bright sparks over what has been a mixed start to Nuno’s debut campaign as manager.

Making the third-most tackles per 90 on average for Spurs in the Premier League, the tenacious youngster has also been a composed and assured presence in front of the back four – managing an eye-catching 90.5% pass accuracy (WhoScored).

Called ‘remarkable’ by Canaries boss Daniel Farke after his stint at Carrow Road, tying him down to fresh terms is arguably a necessity and Gold’s claim certainly comes as an exciting one.

Rangers eyeing John Souttar

An update has emerged on Hearts centre-back John Souttar, regarding long-standing interest from Ibrox giants Rangers.

What’s the talk?

According to the Mail on Sunday, via the Daily Record, Rangers are long-term admirers of the Hearts central defender, who is being targeted by Championship side Stoke City ahead of the January transfer window.

He is out of contract at the end of the season and will be free to speak and negotiate pre-contract deals with any clubs outside of Scotland in January.

Imagine him & Goldson

Ross Wilson must act upon Rangers’ interest in Souttar by launching a bid for the centre-back in the January transfer window. They could tempt Hearts into sanctioning a cut-price permanent deal for Souttar as they run the risk of losing him on a free transfer if they do not decide to cash in on him midway through the campaign.

The Gers will need to compete with Stoke for his signature, who could reach a pre-contract agreement with him, but the allure of competing for trophies every season instead of playing in the second-tier in England could be enough to persuade Souttar to arrive at Ibrox.

Steven Gerrard could land a dream centre-back partnership with Connor Goldson and Souttar if Wilson is able to strike a deal with Hearts. Souttar has proven his quality in the Premiership for Hearts this season, with an average SofaScore rating of 7.20, winning 63% of his duels on the pitch.

Former Hearts boss Craig Levein also once lauded Souttar as the best centre-back in Scotland and hailed his ability to play with the ball at his feet. He said:

“I’ve known him since he was 12 years old and he’s just got better and better. When he came here from Dundee Utd, we just needed to give him time.

“He’s grown into the player that I hoped he would be and for me he’s the best centre back in Scotland.

“Just for the fact that he can do wonderful things. His passing of the ball Saturday was fantastic, but he is also now capable physically of competing with any centre forward. His pace is very, very good and he’s strong, focused and aggressive.”

Goldson, meanwhile, has also averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.20 in the Premiership this term. Interestingly, he has also won 63% of his duels, which means that he has mirrored Souttar’s form in the top-flight. Both players are showing their class for their respective clubs and could form an imperious central defensive partnership if they play alongside each other.

Forwards would fear playing against Goldson and Souttar as the pair have proven that they have the quality to put in top-class performances at this level, which is why they could form a dream defence for Gerrard in January. This is precisely why Wilson must work hard to bring the £3.1k-per-week beast to Ibrox in the winter window.

Spurs legend drops big Ndombele take amid exit talk

Tottenham Hotspur legend Graham Roberts insists that Tanguy Ndombele simply does not have the ability to make an impact in the Premier League.

The midfielder is reported to have informed Spurs that he would be open to an exit from the club in this transfer window.

He has subsequently been linked with a potential move to Bayern Munich, and noted transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the club are trying to find a way to move the France international out before the transfer deadline.

Ndombele has struggled for consistency during his time at Spurs and has yet to play for the club this season.

The 24-year-old made 33 Premier League appearances last term but he completed the 90 minutes just six times.

In total, he scored three goals and registered two assists, and Roberts believes that Ndombele needs to move to a club in a European league, as he does not have the required attributes to succeed in England.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “I think the way he plays the game, I think he has a lot of talent, but he can’t cover the ground. The Premier League is too powerful for him, it’s too physical and quick.

“You have to play every game to a high standard and I just feel that when you see midfield players running past him, that can’t happen, and for me he would be better off in the Italian league or the Spanish league or the French league.”

Nielsen explains Ponting's tactics

Tim Nielsen, Australia’s coach, has launched a lengthy defence of the fourth-day tactics that have landed Ricky Ponting in the firing line from a wide range of commentators and former players. At stumps on Sunday, before much of the criticism had occurred, Nielsen said he did not for a moment believe Ponting had failed to push hard to win the match.Nielsen has had more than two days to reflect on Australia’s decision to use part-time slow bowlers after tea on Sunday, at a time when a quick end to India’s innings could have given Australia a gettable chase. In his blog on Cricket Australia’s website, Nielsen wrote on Tuesday that he felt compelled to defend Ponting.”Ricky had to take a number of things into consideration and having the prospect of a suspension for slow over rate hanging over his head was only part of it,” Nielsen wrote. “It’s all well and good to now say that he should have kept bowling the quicks at any cost but the question I ask is what sort of leadership is that as a captain of Australia? Is it all right to break the rules as long as you win without worrying about the consequences?”Some of the harshest comments on Sunday came from Allan Border, the former captain and a current Cricket Australia director, who said on air: “I’m glad Ricky can’t read my mind right now because he’s not going to like it.” Nielsen said he was particularly disappointed that much of the criticism had come from inside Australian cricket’s “family”.”Whether it be commentators, past Test captains or board members that make those comments, they help shape popular opinion and it really does make it hard for the bloke who is out there trying to make decisions on the run.” Nielsen was keen to point out that Ponting had stuck with his most successful bowler, the offspinner Jason Krejza, and the plan was to let Krejza attack while tying down the runs at the other end.”Unfortunately it’s not like our fast bowlers had taken wickets on call throughout the series,” Nielsen said. “When Jason is bowling, and his figures suggest he is giving up four, five, six runs an over at different times, it’s really hard to keep the game from getting away when you’re giving up runs from both ends.”We bowled our first selected spinner for the tour in Cameron White, who had done a good job of restricting the run-rate during the first three Tests while taking very timely wickets (dismissing Sachin Tendulkar twice). Unfortunately, this time it wasn’t successful, but if it had been I think those in the media would be singing Ricky’s praises.”
