Rankin earns plaudits after victory

It took less than an hour for Warwickshire to wrap-up victory on the final day of their Championship match against Somerset.

Boyd Rankin earned praise from both sides after his efforts against Somerset•Getty ImagesIt took less than an hour for Warwickshire to wrap-up victory on the final day of their Championship match against Somerset. When Nick Compton’s obdurate resistance was finally ended – Compton, with only the hapless Charl Willoughby for company, was caught on the long-on boundary just five short of his second Championship century of the season – it left Warwickshire requiring only 23 runs for victory. They raced to the 10-wicket win in just 20 deliveries. In truth, this game was defined on the first afternoon. An unusually hostile spell of fast bowling from Boyd Rankin ensured Somerset were unable to take advantage of winning the toss on a flat pitch. Generating sharp pace and gaining steep bounce from his towering six feet, seven inch frame, Rankin also found enough swing to claim three wickets for four runs at one stage. It was a point not lost on Somerset captain, Marcus Trescothick afterwards.”Rankin just blew us away,” Trescothick admitted. “It was a really good spell of hostile fast bowling – right up there with anything I’ve faced this year – and it was too good for us. He was easily the fastest bowler on either side.”It’s the best I’ve seen him bowl. He’s up there in terms of pace, but it’s his bounce that really causes the problems. And now he’s swinging the ball, too. He hit me four times – that doesn’t happen very often – and I just couldn’t pick him up. There was nothing wrong with the pitch – it was a bit slow, if anything – and the sight screens are fine. He’s just improved massively.”Trescothick is no stranger to fast bowling, of course. So to hear him talk in such terms of the 26-year-old Irishman is noteworthy. England have quite a pack of tall fast bowlers at present, but if Rankin keeps performing like this, he’ll force himself into contention.Trescothick also credited Rikki Clarke as being “a very clever bowler.” That may surprise a few but the four wickets Clarke claimed in Somerset’s second innings take his Championship tally this season to 30 at just 21 apiece. He’s quietly become a bowling all-rounder. And a very good one.It might be stretching a point to suggest that Warwickshire should now be considered genuine title contenders. The way that Durham and Lancashire blew them away undermines that theory. But Warwickshire have now won five games this season – as many as when they won the title in 2004 – and, at full strength, have a battery of seamers to rival any side. The one worry is the slightly disappointing form of Chris Woakes. By the very high standards he has set himself, Woakes has yet to find his best form this season.Ashley Giles, Warwickshire’s director of cricket, rated the performance as his side’s “best of the season” and had particular praise for Ian Westwood, who made the top score in the match in recording his first Championship century since September 2009.”Losing the toss could have ended with us facing a big deficit, but we were hugely disciplined throughout,” Giles said. “Westwood has had a tough time, so I’m overjoyed for him. From the outside, people don’t see the whole package a guy offers a team, but Ian is a pleasure to work with and really deserves his success.”Giles also had praise for Rankin. “He’s a big bastard,” Giles said, both simply and accurately. “And facing him upsets teams. He has a presence about him and you can see them talking, and worrying, about him.”We always knew he had the attributes: the height, the pace and the bounce. But now we’re seeing him become more consistent. That’s largely because he’s fitter now. In the past he was always in and out because of injuries.”Somerset’s season is now at something of a crossroads. Tipped by many as prospective champions at the start of the season, they’ve lost half of their first eight games and, on this form, look a side more likely to finish nearer the bottom than the top of the table. Their mis-firing middle-order, perhaps cosseted by the flat tracks of Taunton, is simply not performing in these post-heavy roller days.”We’re getting off to good starts, but then it’s clear to see where we’re going wrong,” Trescothick said, referring to his side’s middle-order woes. “We’re probably just lacking a bit of experience in the middle-order and losing Zander de Bruyn [to Surrey] is part of that. We can’t afford to keep losing.”Tellingly, Ashley Giles admitted he was “a little surprised” at how intimidated some of Somerset’s batsmen appeared to be by the pace of Rankin and Clarke.Meanwhile, the game marked the end of an era. By the time the next Championship game begins, in the best part of a month, Warwickshire hope to have moved into their new pavilion. The hand-over date – the day the club take possession of the new facility from the builders – is just one week away and there appears to be an enormous amount of work still to be completed. With 380 builders working at the ground today, however, the club are still confident that they are on track.

Bresnan likely to miss Sri Lanka series

Tim Bresnan is likely to miss the three-Test series against Sri Lanka after suffering a torn calf muscle

ESPNcricinfo staff16-May-2011Tim Bresnan is likely to miss the three-Test series against Sri Lanka after suffering a torn calf muscle. He had already been ruled out of Yorkshire’s County Championship match against Lancashire in Liverpool and a scan revealed the full extent of the injury. It is a recurrence of the problem he picked up during the one-day series in Australia, which forced him to fly home to be fit in time for the World Cup. The latest injury occurred during the Championship game against Hampshire last week where Bresnan was on course to bowl Yorkshire to victory after taking 3 for 18.”A rehabilitation and recovery programme will be established in the coming days following further medical assessment,” said an ECB statement. The Hampshire match was Bresnan’s first Championship outing of the season following a winter where he played a key role in the Ashes success and became England’s senior one-day paceman at the World Cup. He earlier impressed with the bat, making 87 to haul Yorkshire out of trouble in the first-innings and hint at the all-round role he could play for England.Even a fit Bresnan may not have featured in Cardiff, though, because England have plenty of pace options to select from. Stuart Broad, who missed the last three Ashes Tests through injury, is expected to slot back into the side while James Anderson and Chris Tremlett were outstanding against Australia. However, the selectors are likely to want some pace-bowling cover in the squad and that will mean an opportunity for one of the England Lions bowlers to step up. Steven Finn and Ajmal Shahzad will both play against Sri Lanka, while Jade Dernbach and the fit-again Graham Onions are also in the squad.

Ex-Celtic hero loves PFA Team of the Year

Former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie is ecstatic that six Hoops players have made it into PFA Scotland’s Team of the Year for 2021/22.

The Lowdown: Hoops dominate Team of the Year

The Hoops are on the verge of being named the new Scottish Premiership champions, taking a six-point lead with them into the final three matches of the campaign.

Celtic’s dominance has now been recognised, with the news that Cameron Carter-Vickers, Josip Juranovic, Tom Rogic, Callum McGregor, Jota and Kyogo Furuhashi are all named in the Team of the Year.

All six have enjoyed superb seasons, playing a huge role in Ange Postecoglou’s side being so close to title glory.

The Latest: McAvennie reacts to news

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie couldn’t hide his delight at the news:

“I can’t believe it, if you told me six players would make it into the team of the year at the end of last season, I wouldn’t believe it. The team we had last year was rotten. In such a short time Ange has turned it around.

“If you look at those six, Juranovic, Jota, Kyogo and Carter-Vickers all came in this season. I can’t believe that. Four brand new signings all in the team of the season, it’s just, wow.

“That is down to Ange as well because he brought them in. He is the one to thank in all this.

“McGregor and Rogic have improved so much as well, all of them deserve it. I know it doesn’t really mean much but it’s just another sign for the incredible year we have had and hopefully it’s a good sign for the future.”

The Verdict: Richly deserved recognition

To see over half of the Team of the Year dominated by Celtic players is just reward for their efforts, with Postecoglou getting huge amounts out of his squad in his first season at Parkhead.

Carter-Vickers has been an influential figure on loan from Tottenham, averaging 4.1 aerial duel wins per game, while Rogic and McGregor have brought class and fight to the midfield.

Meanwhile, Jota has been another inspired loan signing, chipping in with 18 goal contributions in the league – nine goals and assists each – and both Juranovic and Kyogo have also done their bit for the cause at right-back and in attack, respectively.

Rangers transfer news on Antony

Glasgow Rangers are reportedly now following Brazilian youngster Antony as Giovanni van Bronckhorst targets his first signing of the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Busy summer?

In his first summer transfer window at Ibrox, van Bronckhorst will want to put his own stamp on the squad, and so there should be expected to be plenty of incomings and outgoings before the new season starts.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-3/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Teddy Bears have recently been linked with a loan move for Billy Gilmour, but the likes of Alex Lowry, Joe Aribo and Filip Helander are reportedly attracting interest from the Premier League.

The Latest: Rangers following

As per A Bola, the Light Blues, as well as Basel, are now following young forward Antony ahead of a potential move in the summer.

Described as an ‘offensive weapon’, the Gers have ‘collected some notes’ on the versatile talent as they look to start their business straight away.

The Verdict: Exciting

It certainly is exciting for the supporters that the club seem to be looking at summer recruitment already, despite the season not being over.

A Brazilian who is just 20 years of age, Antony is an interesting albeit relatively unknown prospect, having scored two goals while on loan at Arouca in the Portuguese top flight from Corinthians.

Capable of playing virtually anywhere in the attack, from second striker to both wings, RFC will be hoping to add more depth to the squad once the window officially opens, and perhaps the young South American could be a good start.

Mallett hammers Australian spin, but backs Hauritz

The elite spin of Graeme Swann could be the difference between England and Australia in the upcoming Ashes series, according to one of Australia’s most successful Test offspinners, Ashley Mallett

Brydon Coverdale14-Oct-2010The elite spin of Graeme Swann could be the difference between England and Australia in the upcoming Ashes series, according to one of Australia’s most successful Test offspinners, Ashley Mallett. He believes the selectors should throw Steven Smith in to the side to help Nathan Hauritz, who took six wickets at 65.00 during his disappointing tour of India.Hauritz was barely a threat against India’s strong batting line-up and on the final day of the series, he bowled to a field so defensive that Shane Warne aired his frustration via Twitter. There were also reports of conflict between Hauritz and the captain Ricky Ponting over the line he should bowl, and in the second innings in Bangalore he conceded more than a run a ball.In Hauritz’s defence, few Australian spinners have thrived in India, where even Warne battled for 34 Test wickets at an average of 43.11. One of the best performers was Mallett, who, in five Tests in India claimed 28 victims, and he said the presence of Swann in England’s attack was one of the factors that would go against Australia in the Ashes.”The way it’s shaping I reckon England are going to win the series pretty easily,” Mallett told ESPNcricinfo. “They’ve got a genuine No. 1 spinner, a pretty good attack and they’ve got a pretty good balance in their batting. They’ve got to be favourites.”[Hauritz] has always had a very good temperament, but whether he’s world-class, that’s another thing. They’re crying out for a spinner that’s genuine Test class at the moment. Steve Smith has got to play. I’d play him as a batsman anyway, in front of [Marcus] North, against England.”Mallett said using Smith as a second slow bowler would be a good way to continue his transition into Test cricket without the pressure of being the lead spinner, after he made his first two appearances against Pakistan in England in July. And Mallett believes Hauritz deserves further opportunities, especially with “not much” high-quality spin on the domestic scene.”I think they should go with Hauritz,” Mallett said. “He’s bowled steadily without being an absolute world-beater. He’s been a good support bowler and has kept it pretty tight. He bowled well in England and bowled well last summer in Australia. Okay, he’s had a few downers in India but we’re not playing India in India, we’re playing England in Australia.”The difference in conditions should lift the spirits of Hauritz, who picked up his first two five-wicket hauls during last summer’s home series against Pakistan. Although India is traditionally regarded as the perfect place to bowl spin due to the favourable pitches it is not always as simple as it seems, as the left-armer Ray Bright found during Australia’s 1986 tour.”It’s not all that easy,” Bright said. “You’ve got the heat and humidity, which make gripping the ball difficult. At times the lack of pace and bounce in the wicket makes your margin of error very minimal, so at times you have to bowl tighter length and lines to get through that.”And traditionally India have been magnificent players of spin bowling. They’re used to playing good quality spin bowling all the time and they’re quick on their feet, whether it be going forward or back, so they make you change your length quite often. That can be a difficult part of bowling in those conditions.”Bright, who sees plenty of Australian domestic cricket in his role as a Victoria selector, described Hauritz’s efforts in Test cricket over the past two years as “outstanding”. However, he also believes the national selectors missed an opportunity in Bangalore to give Smith more exposure at the highest level, given that the Border-Gavaskar Trophy was already lost.”He [Smith] needs to bowl a lot more and this is the problem – they take him to India and he doesn’t bowl in matches,” Bright said. “He could have been playing Shield matches but they’ve taken him over there and sat him on the bench. For the development of a spin bowler, you don’t get any better by not bowling.”Both Hauritz and Smith will remain in India over the next couple of weeks for Australia’s one-day series, before they return home to acclimatise back to Australian conditions ahead of the Ashes. England will have just as much opportunity to warm up, with three tour games scheduled before the first Test.

Chennai brace for stiffer test

Chennai Super Kings can expect a tougher encounter against Wayamba

The Preview by Siddhartha Talya14-Sep-2010Match factsWednesday, September 14

Mahela Jayawardene will want to make up for his duck in Wayamba’s opening game against Warriors•Manoj RidimahaliyaddaBig PictureThere were a couple of surprises in the first phase of the Champions League Twenty20, but Chennai Super Kings emerged with their reputation unblemished after a clinical victory over Central Districts in Durban. Chennai’s opponents for Wednesday’s clash in Centurion, Wayamba, have been quite understated in the build-up to the tournament but promise to present a stronger challenge to the IPL champions. They were beaten by Warriors in their opening game but not before overcoming a horrid start with the bat and creating several chances in the field. Some of their experienced crew, including Mahela Jayawardene and Farveez Maharoof, however, failed to perform, and they’ll be the focus in their attempt to stay in the hunt in this competition.Chennai’s ruthlessness with the ball, on show against Central Districts, will be hard to replicate. Muttiah Muralitharan and R Ashwin shared four wickets in miserly spells. But how they cope in this tournament against a side more accustomed to handling such variations remains to be seen. For Wayamba, the worry remains their pace attack comprising Maharoof, Chanaka Welegedera and Thisara Perera; they conceded 82 in 8.2 overs between them, a performance that does not augur well for a contest against a power-packed batting line-up.Team newsWayamba have pace allrounders Isuru Udana and Shalika Karunanayake in their squad and they could feature in the team’s calculations should they choose to replace any of their seamers. Legspinner Kaushal Lokuarachchi had an off day against the Warriors, conceding 25 in two overs, and could prompt the team to revisit its pre-match plans.Wayamba (possible): 1 Mahela Jayawardene, 2 Jeevantha Kulatunga, 3 Mahela Udawatte, 4 Jehan Mubarak (capt), 5 Kushal Perera (wk), 6 Thisara Perera, 7 Farveez Maharoof,, 8 Rangana Herath, 9 Shalika Karunanayake, 10 Isuru Udana, 11 Ajantha Mendis.Given their comprehensive win against Central Districts, Chennai could go in with the same XI.Chennai (possible): 1 M Vijay, 2 Matthew Hayden, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 S Badrinath, 5 MS Dhoni (capt and wk), 6 S Anirudha, 7 Albie Morkel, 8 Doug Bollinger, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Muttiah Muralitharan, 11 L Balaji.Watch out for…The success of Doug Bollinger has been one to savour for Chennai. He was one of their star performers during their IPL triumph with 17 wickets in eight games at 17.25 and is a huge asset with his persistence and combativeness with the new ball. He picked up 2 for 10 in his team’s tournament opener and will target the Wayamba top order with some of its bigger names searching for form after the first game.Mahela Jayawardene fell for a second-ball duck against the Warriors, a rarity in his stint for Wayamba as well as Sri Lanka in the opening slot. He remains best-equipped to handle Chennai’s pace arsenal up front as well as their spin threat. Watch out for his face-off, if we come to that, against the other half of one of the most successful bowler-fielder combinations in cricket.Key contestsBat v Spin: Ajantha Mendis and Rangana Herath conceded just 43 in eight overs against the Warriors while Murali and Ashwin tasted success in Chennai’s opening game. Wayamba will be relying heavily on their slow bowlers given the lackluster show their seamers put forward against the Warriors. But against a bunch of batsmen with a penchant for finding the ropes, the ability of Mendis and Herath to contain the scoring faces a stern test.Stats and triviaJeevantha Kulatunga is Wayamba’s highest run-getter in Twenty20 cricket with686 in 23 games at 40.35. His average is the best in the team followed by Mahela Jayawardene with 31.28. Thisara Perera is the highest wicket-taker with 28 in 23 games at 17.84. Isuru Udana averages 14.12 for his 25 wickets in 15 games.Albie Morkel will be playing his 129th Twenty20 game on Wednesday, keeping him tied with Victoria captain David Hussey for the most Twenty20 matches played.Quotes”Most of our boys know how to handle him”

Everton fans slam Townsend vs Aston Villa

Many Everton fans were left slamming the display of Andros Townsend in their game at home to Aston Villa in the Premier League at Saturday lunchtime.

The winger struggled to make any sort of real impact on the match, and was subsequently hauled off for Anthony Gordon in the 56th minute.

He failed to record any shots on goal, and was accurate with only one of his five crosses, while he only managed to make one key pass and was successful in just 53% of his passes (SofaScore).

Townsend also gave possession away on no fewer than on 18 separate occasions in total, one of the highest in the team, despite only playing 56 minutes, while defensively he struggled up against former teammate Lucas Digne, losing out on five of his duels.

These members of the Goodison Park faithful slammed his performance on Twitter, with one supporter of the Merseyside club even going as far as to claim that he was a ‘passenger’:

Tyron Henderson back at Middlesex for Twenty20

Tyron Henderson, the South African allrounder, has rejoined Middlesex for the remainder of the Friends Provident t20 campaign

Cricinfo staff25-Jun-2010Tyron Henderson, the South African allrounder, has rejoined Middlesex for the remainder of the Friends Provident t20 campaign. Henderson, who had a previous spell with the club in 2008 and 2009, will help cover for an injury-hit bowling attack.Having arrived in London earlier this week, Henderson proved his fitness we two outings for the Middlesex second team which included hitting 80 off 31 balls against Surrey at Beckenham. Henderson was the final-over hero for Middlesex when they won the 2008 Twenty20 Cup against Kent at The Rose Bowl, although he had a limited impact for Rajasthan Royals at IPL3 having been brought for $650,000.”Injury to Iain O’Brien and Shaun Udal, and the ECB’s decision to withdraw Steven Finn from all cricket has given Middlesex’s bowling an inexperienced look,” said Angus Fraser, the managing director of cricket. “The predicament also places a heavy workload on a couple of bowlers who have already bowled a lot of overs this summer.”With this in mind it seemed sensible to bolster our bowling resources, and there are few more experienced and skilful t20 bowlers than Tyron. In 2009 it was reassuring to watch Tyron bowl at crucial stages of matches and we all know how hard and far he can hit a cricket ball. On his day he is a high quality limited over cricketer.”Meanwhile Neil Dexter, the recently appointed captain, and allrounder Gareth Berg have been given new three-year deals by the club. Dexter will take over the leadership following Shaun Udal’s resignation now that Adam Gilchrist’s spell with the county has come to an end.Berg, meanwhile, has been rewarded for some impressive all-round results after averaging 51.18 with the bat in the first half of the Championship season and taking 24 wickets at 34.75 to go with a batting average of 44.66 in the CB40.”That Neil has been appointed captain for the second half of the season highlights how highly he is regarded by everyone at Middlesex,” said Fraser. “He has been in excellent form with the bat and is one of the most elegant and classy players in the country. His bowling in one-day cricket is becoming highly effective too.”When I returned to Middlesex in many people’s eyes the jury was out on Gareth. But over the past season and a half he has become one of the country’s leading all-rounders. He holds a pivotal role in our side and when Gareth plays well we tend to. The most encouraging thing is that Gareth is getting better all the time and there is still plenty more to come.”
