ICL players are owed millions, says cricketers' union

Tim May, chief executive of the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA), has said the Indian Cricket League owes “millions of dollars” in outstanding payments to its players, officials and support staff and warned that the situation, if not resolved, could be damaging to the league.Essel Sports Private Ltd (ESPL), the ICL’s owners, recently served a notice on the ICC and the English and Indian cricket boards, but May has questioned how they intend to do so given their outstanding payments.”For a number of months, FICA (on behalf of a number of players from numerous countries) has been in discussions with the ICL in relation to outstanding payments to players, officials and support staff, relating as far back to 2008,” May said. “These outstanding monies amount to millions of dollars.”FICA and the players have constantly been informed by ICL, that they will meet these obligations on specified dates. Unfortunately these dates continually pass without any sign of payment to players, officials and support staff””The players are sick and tired of the broken commitments from ICL and the evasiveness of various ICL officials and now after exhausting all reasonable efforts to settle the issue amicably, they believe they have no other option than to contemplate legal action against ICL for the recovery of these payments.”The ICL was formed in 2007, a year before the official IPL Twenty20 tournament came into being, but was denied recognition – despite repeated requests and discussions – by the BCCI, other national cricket bodies and the ICC. The league went ahead for two years but finally decided to suspend operations early this year after all its players – around 150 Indian and foreign cricketers – preferred to take up a worldwide amnesty offered by the various official national boards. The ICL’s notice, dated November 16, demanded an injunction against each defendant for implementing the boycott on players associated with the unofficial league and unspecified damages to make up for the loss that ESPL suffered due to the ban after an inquiry. May was skeptical of such claims and raised the matter of the ICL management not meeting previous obligations to players and staff. He warned that even if the ICL won the case, it would have a tough time recruiting players.”In blunt terms, the players have lost trust in the ICL and the Essel Group,” he said. “No player will want to play in a league that has a history of treating players with such little regard. ICL need to re-establish formal communication with the players and settle these outstanding payments as a matter of priority if they are to recover the loss of faith of the player community.”Michael Kasprowicz, one of eight Australians owed millions of dollars by the ICL, rued the circumstances. “It’s a shame it’s come to this,” he told the . “We’ve constantly been promised payment on certain dates but still nothing has happened.”Jason Gillespie said it had been difficult to share his knowledge in Australia owing to resistance from Cricket Australia and state bodies. “Even a two-week coaching stint with South Australian Country next month has been questioned,” he said. “They want me to sign a form renouncing the ICL, but I won’t. It’s not like I’m banned or anything. I haven’t done anything wrong. And it’s not like I’m going to make money out of it.”

Man United fans fume at Bruce rumour

Some Manchester United supporters are fuming after the club’s former player Steve Bruce was linked with taking interim charge of the Red Devils.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left his role as United manager on Sunday morning following the demoralising 4-1 defeat at the hands of Watford in the Premier League.

The result leaves the Red Devils a whopping 12 points behind current leaders Chelsea, with their title chances effectively over after just 12 games.

The search for Solskjaer’s successor is now on, with some reports claiming that an interim manager could take charge until the end of the season.

According to The Athletic, Bruce is keen on taking the role, having been sacked as Newcastle United manager last month. The 60-year-old enjoyed a great playing career with the Red Devils, making 414 appearances and winning three Premier League titles during a glorious period in the 1990s.

However, his 23-year managerial career has not yielded a single trophy, while the highest Premier League finish he has achieved as a coach is 10th. He was also deeply unpopular on Tyneside, with many Newcsstle supporters lamenting his conservative tactical approach.

Younis says he continues enjoying captaincy

Pakistan captain Younis Khanhas said he is enjoying leading the side despite the semi-final loss in the ICC Champions Trophy and insisted it had not affected his own performance on the field

Cricinfo staff06-Oct-2009Pakistan captain Younis Khan has said he is enjoying leading the side despite the semi-final loss in the ICC Champions Trophy and insisted it had not affected his own performance on the field.”I’m enjoying cricket,” Younis said after reaching Karachi. “In fact all the boys are enjoying playing under my captaincy and that’s a good thing.”Younis was first made captain in 2005 in the absence of Inzamam-ul-Haq but announced his resignation for the 2006 Champions Trophy, only to reverse it the next day and lead Pakistan to a first-round exit in the tournament. He was favourite to take over the captaincy following Pakistan’s poor show in the 2007 World Cup but he turned it down, citing mental strain as the reason. However in January 2009, the board approached him again following a disastrous home series against Sri Lanka. This time Younis accepted and led Pakistan to a World Twenty20 title in England.Younis said the Champions Trophy exit was bitterly disappointing as he had wanted to gift his country the trophy that had been shifted from Pakistan to South Africa because of security concerns. He said there were many reasons for the team’s defeat to New Zealand, including his dropped catch, missed run-outs and poor umpiring but that finishing in the top four was a positive sign.”I will regret dropping it for the rest of my life,” Younis said. “Maybe the result could have been different had I not dropped that catch.”Allrounder Shahid Afridi felt luck had deserted Pakistan in the game against New Zealand but also said that they had made poor use of the Powerplays in the match. They scored only 35 in their batting Powerplay after taking it only in the 45th over and conceded 55 when New Zealand took theirs.

Flintoff begins recovery from surgery

The England allrounder Andrew Flintoff has undergone surgery to his injured right knee and is expected to be on crutches for a minimum of six weeks.Flintoff, who retired from Test cricket after England’s victorious Ashes campaign which culminated in a 197-run win over Australia at The Oval, underwent a routine arthroscopy and micro-fracture to two small areas in his right knee last night. The recovery period is expected to be lengthy. Prior to the operation, Flintoff identified England’s one-day series against Bangladesh next February as a realistic goal to recover from this latest surgery. And despite this latest setback, he remains determined to become the best one-day cricketer in the world.”The recovery will require him to be non weight-bearing for the first six to eight weeks post surgery,” the ECB said. “At the end of this six-to-eight-week period, the knee will be reviewed by his surgeon and the timescale for ongoing rehabilitation further determined.”Flintoff ended his Test career by helping England beat Australia in the fifth and final Test, clinching the series 2-1 and regaining the Ashes.

Aston Villa: Kortney Hause offers revealed

Aston Villa centre-back Kortney Hause was the subject of interest from the Premier League and Championship during the summer, The Athletic’s Gregg Evans writes.

The lowdown

With loanee Axel Tuanzebe ineligible to face his parent club, Hause was drafted into Dean Smith’s back three for Aston Villa’s trip to Manchester United.

And he marked his first Premier League start of the season with a memorable late goal, securing Villa’s first victory at Old Trafford since 2009.

The Englishman has been hailed as an ‘incredible squad player’ by club correspondent Ashley Preece.

His contract is due to expire at the end of the season, but crucially Villa have the option to extend it by a further year (via Transfermarkt).

The latest

According to Evans, ‘rival Premier League clubs’ made ‘tentative enquiries’ for Hause during the summer, but their interest didn’t progress any further.

Meanwhile, clubs asked in the Championship asked about a possible loan, but that was never thought to be ‘likely’.

The verdict

Even though Hause only started seven Premier League matches last season, it was hard to see Villa agreeing to let him go. Clubs need four senior centre-backs at their disposal.

And Smith’s willingness to change systems to a back three/five could herald more opportunities for the 26-year-old, potentially convincing him to stay put, if indeed he was considering whether a move away was best for his career.

In other news, this man came under fire for his performance at Old Trafford.

Abdulla credits IPL for career boost

Only in the infant stages of his international career, South African left-arm fast bowler Yusuf Abdulla has praised the IPL as a great launch pad. Abdulla, who made his Twenty 20 debut against Australia earlier this year, was rewarded for his outstanding performances in the domestic tournament and for Kings XI Punjab in the IPL with a call-up for the World Twenty20 beginning on June 5 in England.”I believe in learning wherever I go and the IPL is a good learning curve,” he told . “It would have been hard to make a squad of 15 otherwise; the IPL has helped, it has shown I’m capable of performing at a higher level.”I was very excited when I heard I had been chosen for the Twenty20 World Cup and it’s definitely still sinking in. It’s a big achievement for me and I can only think the selectors were looking at me in the IPL because I have not played much international cricket, basically just my debut.”Abdulla, 26, is currently the IPL’s joint second highest wicket-taker with 14 wickets in nine matches. He was called up after West Indies fast bowler Jerome Taylor was ruled out with injury. Punjab owner Ness Wadia cited Abdulla’s knowledge of his home ground Kingsmead – where the team play six games – as “critical” to success in the IPL’s second season. After two average games, Abdulla notched up figures of 4 for 31 against Royal Challengers Bangalore, among them the wickets of Kevin Pietersen and Jacques Kallis. His return of 3 for 21 against the Rajasthan Royals made him one of the top five leading wicket-takers in the tournament.Abdulla said support from his seniors helped him ease into a team of superstars. “The IPL is a big world event and there are a lot of international stars playing, so the level is very high. There were a bit of nerves before my first game,” he said. “I’ve learnt to back myself and the team has really backed me as well. Yuvraj [Singh] is a heck of a good guy and all the stars have been very welcoming. It’s great to have players like that around because it has made it much easier for me. I can rely on their advice and experience.”It’s been a big step and it hasn’t been easy because the margin for error at this level is very small.”

Warne's belief gave me confidence – Kamran

Kamran Khan tells Cricinfo how he kept his head during the tense finish in the tied game against Kolkata Knight Riders

Nagraj Gollapudi26-Apr-2009Kamran Khan slept well Thursday, hours after he had turned the match against Kolkata Knight Riders on its head in favour of Rajasthan Royals. Asked to bowl the final over against Kolkata, who needed seven runs for victory in Durban, Kamran forced a tie.Minutes later, he returned to his bowling mark with a smile on his face after his captain, and No. 1 backer, Shane Warne asked him to deliver the Super Over. Kamran managed to keep the marauding Chris Gayle from trampling him, limiting the target to a gettable 16 runs. Moments later, Yusuf Pathan charged Ajantha Mendis several times into the crowd to give Rajasthan their first victory in South Africa, which had looked improbable at one stage. But Kamran never had any doubt.Kamran, an 18-year-old left-arm fast bowler from Azamgarh in the north-Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, impressed Warne instantly after bowling one over against the Cape Cobras in a warm-up game, played couple of days before the IPL kicked off. Since then Warne has not stopped gushing about his new team-mate, who was spotted by Rajasthan team director Darren Berry at a talent scouting camp earlier this year.Kamran’s initiation has been smooth and in a matter of weeks he has become pivotal to Rajasthan’s bowling strategy, especially in the absence of last year’s key performers Sohail Tanvir and Shane Watson. Kamran said what has helped him settle down easily is the team’s belief in winning and Warne’s faith in each and every man in the squad – something that paved the way for Rajasthan to win the inaugural IPL.”We are a champion team and we need to perform like a champion team. That has been the message everyone has been talking about,” Kamran told Cricinfo from Cape Town after his evening prayers on Saturday. Of course, the fact that his captain has enough faith in him is not lost on Kamran. “Warne always keeps encouraging and motivating me. That, obviously, gives confidence. I felt very good that there is someone who has belief in me.”That support was the driving force behind Kamran’s excellent two-over spell at the end, the turning point, against Kolkata. The resolute Sourav Ganguly had brought Kolkata to the doorstep of victory, but Kamran, too, was not going to blink easily – the stage now was set for an interesting duel.

“For the last ball I set the field for a yorker. I was bowling to win the game and not a tie, but Ishant Sharma dug out that yorker well to run the single”Kamran Khan

“Warne had already signalled to me earlier that I would bowl the final over. So I was prepared. There was no pressure even if they needed only six runs. I had no plan except that I should get Ganguly out … I just needed to get his wicket. Before the penultimate delivery of the match I thought he [Ganguly] would want to finish it off without waiting for another ball. And when I saw him move to make room I bowled the length ball and he gave an easy catch. I was happy but not extraordinarily excited or anything like that for getting Ganguly, such a big wicket,” Kamran said.Warne praised the youngster’s “good ball”. But there was one more delivery to go. “For the last ball I set the field for a yorker. I was bowling to win the game and not a tie, but Ishant Sharma dug out that yorker well to run the single,” Kamran said with a chuckle.Kamran’s job wasn’t done yet; the Super Over remained. Wasn’t he drained after such a tight final over? “I was not tired and I thought I would be the one to deliver the Super Over. I was confident. And Warne told me to be ready.”Was there any special message from Warne? None. “He told me to enjoy cricket and not be serious about it. He said, ‘I like your smile and keep that when you bowl’. That lightened me up and helped me to focus.”Once back to the bowling mark Kamran did not panic. “There was no particular or special plan in my mind against Gayle. I knew the first ball would be a yorker. The second would also be in a block hole. He hit some good shots but I got lucky to get him on the final ball. Fifteen runs. I knew we had good hitters and that was not impossible. And when I saw Ajantha Mendis we knew [Yusuf] Pathan would win it for us – if he could stick for those six balls it would be easy.”

Leeds: Luke Ayling’s wife drops injury hint

Leeds United right-back Luke Ayling was filmed riding a scooter on Saturday by his wife on Instagram.

The Lowdown: Ayling limps off

Marcelo Bielsa was forced to deploy Ayling at centre-back alongside captain Liam Cooper on Friday evening against Newcastle.

The Whites drew 1-1 at St James’ Park and added two more players to the injury list, with goalscorer Raphinha and Ayling going off with knocks.

Ayling went down twice before eventually making way for Jamie Shackleton.

The Latest: Instagram post

Ayling’s wife, Poppy, posted a video on her Instagram story on Saturday afternoon, with the Leeds man riding a scooter alongside his daughter.

Poppy captioned the video as a ‘family walk’, so perhaps Ayling’s knock is worse than first feared and the £25,000-a-week defender is being advised not to walk following his injury.

@TalkingShutt took a screenshot of the story and posted the image on Twitter, leading fans to hypothesise that the scooter is to prevent him walking, while one supporter claimed the image ‘isn’t good news’.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-16/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Not ideal

Bielsa is without Pascal Struijk for two more games due to suspension, while Diego Llorente and Robin Koch have both been sidelined.

So, should Ayling’s injury be worse than first feared, it would be another setback for the Whites at the back.

Hopefully, Ayling decided to ride the scooter by choice and is feeling fine after his knock against Newcastle, however, you could certainly look at it with the same worry that some fans already have.

Only time will tell how serious it is, but it would’ve helped ease fears if Ayling was captured walking freely on social media.
