Somerset support growing restless

The scorebook does not lie, although here, surely, was the exception. It stated that Marcus Trescothick, the pre-eminent county cricketer, was out for a pair against Sussex, which equated to his fourth duck in succession. To stretch credulity even further, Nick Compton, also out without scoring in the first innings, was dismissed for a single figure score by the same bowler. An Australian. For the second time in this match, Trescothick had received the kind of ball most batsmen would have struggled to contend with as soon as they had come to the crease. In the first innings, it was a snorter from James Anyon which he was good enough to touch. Now, coming in again after Sussex had achieved a 119-run lead, he was beaten by away swing and caught behind. As he departed for the futuristic pavilion, Trescothick seemed to acknowledge the crowd by raising his bat in what appeared to be a mock gesture in response to some ribald comment on the boundary. He has played for Somerset for 20 years – and it would seem there will be more to come. He, at any rate, has always declared he will continue until he is 40, even if, at present, he describes his batting as “a work in progress.”It should be noted that two of the Somerset captain’s four ducks came in t20 matches, so in a sense that does not count. But these are worrying times, both for him and his team, who not for the first time this season have been outplayed by Sussex. Nor did it seem a particularly sensible idea not to play a specialist spinner in the expectation that George Dockrell would return from playing for Ireland in time for the third day of this match. That looks too late.As for Compton, yorked by the under-rated Steve Magoffin, he had to put up with shouts of ‘Joe Root!’ from the Sussex supporters. All this after both dedicated opening batsmen had been in the nets two hours before the start of play on the second day.In addition, Somerset lost Alviro Petersen, well held low by Yardy at third slip, Craig Meschede – who batted on account of the fact that he will stand down when Dockrell arrives in time for the third day’s play – and James Hildreth, who made 49 before Magoffin had him caught in the slips, before achieving a lead. The salient innings in this match was played by Mike Yardy, who struck 26 fours in reaching 150 and made 156 in all. The explosion of boundaries in the partnership of 275 in 52 overs between him and Matt Machan, whose maiden century came from 138 balls, was owing to some ineffectual change bowling.Yardy reached the 20th century of his career when he pulled Jamie Overton for four soon after the resumption of play. Machan, whose previous highest first-class score was 99 against Oxford MCCU, was missed on 84 at short extra cover, but otherwise appeared thoroughly competent and confident. He will drop out of this match when Ed Joyce appears, at the same times as Dockrell, which is all very bizarre and baffling insofar as the uninformed spectators were concerned.

Fast bowler Chanaka Welegedara has earned an ODI recall, picked in Sri Lanka’s 15-man squad for the Champions Trophy. Welegedara has not played international limited-overs cricket since mid-2010, and had to return home mid-way through Sri Lanka’s Test series in Australia last December with a hamstring injury.Expectedly Mahela Jayawardene and Rangana Herath, the two senior players who had missed Sri Lanka’s previous one-day assignment, return; Jayawardene had missed the home ODIs against Bangladesh in March due to a finger injury, while Herath had been rested.Batsman Upul Tharanga, who had a woeful series against Australia – 13 runs in three innings – and did not make the XI in the games against Bangladesh, does not feature in the squad.Spinner Ajantha Mendis, who was not picked for the Bangladesh one-dayers, has not made this squad either.Welegedara had an injury-plagued 2012, straining his groin in March during the home series against England and then, on recovering from that, tearing a shoulder muscle as Sri Lanka prepared to play Pakistan in June. While one of Sri Lanka’s preferred options in Test cricket, he has not been part of the limited-overs set-up of late. After pulling up during the Boxing Day Test, he was out of competitive cricket for a month, before returning to first-class cricket in February. Since then he took 23 wickets in seven matches for Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club.Batsmen Kithuruwan Vithanage and Angelo Perera, and allrounder Sachith Pathirana, who earned maiden call-ups for the Bangladesh series, miss out.Sri Lanka had tied the series against Australia (2-2) and Bangladesh (1-1).

Bates slams ton in big win

Scorecard
Suzie Bates’s unbeaten 122 helped New Zealand complete the chase in the the 45th over•Getty Images

An unbeaten century by Suzie Bates led New Zealand to a comfortable eight-wicket win against Australia in the first match of the Rose Bowl at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Chasing 249, New Zealand lost opener Lucy Doolan in the seventh over, but Bates found solid support from Amy Satterthwaite as the two put on 168 runs for the second wicket at almost a run a ball. Satterthwaite fell for 98, but Bates carried on, got to her century with a boundary, and completed the chase in the 45th over in the company of Sara McGlashan.Australia had earlier chosen to bat and had slipped to 4 for 97 in the 20th over with Rachel Candy picking up two big wickets of Jess Cameron and Lisa Sthalekar. Opening batsman Meg Lanning, who was unbeaten at this stage, stabilised the innings with a half-century, but three more wickets fell for nine runs reducing Australia to 7 for 157. An 80-run recovery stand between Jodie Fields, who scored 51, and Erin Osborne took the team to relative safety and helped them set a competitive target. Candy was the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 35.The second ODI of the four match series will be played on December 14 in Sydney.

Prince Imran makes Games plea

Cricket could return to the Commonwealth Games as early as 2018 if the International Cricket Council (ICC) accepts an invitation from the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF).HRH Prince Imran of Malaysia, the Chairman of the Commonwealth Games Federation, made a presentation to the ICC board on Wednesday, inviting cricket into the 2018 Commonwealth Games, to be held on the Gold Coast in Australia, and the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games, which will be held in St Lucia.Cricket has been included in the Commonwealth Games just once – in Malaysia in 1998 – when South Africa won gold by defeating Australia (silver) in the final. New Zealand won bronze. The Games have a worldwide TV audience of over 400 million.”I gave the ICC board a brief introduction to the Commonwealth Games,” Prince Imran told ESPNcricinfo. “I told them that the feeling from our AGM in St Kitts in November was that we were keen to have cricket back in the Games and, with Australia hosting in 2018, that might present an ideal opportunity.”I hope this will be a win-win situation. Including cricket within the Commonwealth Games would present an opportunity to showcase the sport not just to a new audience, but to other sports administrators. Just as Rugby 7s got into the Olympics after making a good impression in the Commonwealth Games, so could cricket.”But the greatest benefit of inclusion is not commercial; it is about the globalisation of the game. I believe inclusion within the Commonwealth Games would be particularly beneficial for the development of the women’s game. It would provide a high-profile tournament for them to take part in.”While there is little opposition to cricket’s inclusion in the Commonwealth Games on principle, the practical obstacles remain substantial. Even if the Future Tours Programme left room for another event and even if the issues with long-term broadcast contracts could be resolved, the fact is that the 2018 Commonwealth Games are scheduled for the prime weeks of the IPL; between April 4 and 15.Such is the CGF’s desire to see cricket included within the Games, however, they stressed to the ICC that they would be happy to see the “best available” players selected.”We understand that the cricket schedule is very busy,” Prince Imran continued “and selection, of course, is the prerogative of the board. We would understand if the players selected were the best available.”I am sure that the players would like to participate. Shaun Pollock and Steve Waugh both appeared in the Games in 1998, while Sir Viv Richards was there as team manager of the Antigua side: I know they all enjoyed and valued the experience.”The ICC will now investigate the costs and benefits of inclusion in multi-sports games, with Prince Imran not anticipating a formal response until the next ICC board meeting in October.
