Sheffield Wednesday suffer injury blow

Sheffield Wednesday are still likely to be without the services of Massimo Luongo this evening as the Owls squad look to bounce back from two successive league defeats…

What’s the word?

Owls caretaker boss Neil Thompson had ruled the 28-year-old ahead of their loss to relegation rivals Birmingham City on Saturday and now reliable Yorkshire Live reporter Dom Howson claims the midfielder is unlikely to be involved tonight.

‘Influential midfielder Massimo Luongo (thigh) and winger Andre Green (Achilles) are unlikely to be involved,’ wrote Howson.

It is thought that he could return at the weekend, in time to face Luton Town, instead.

Bad news for Thompson

The £1.8m-rated Australian international has played only 22 minutes in the Championship since the start of December but still remains a key and integral member of that Owls engine room.

When he has played, Luongo has been decent, ranking fifth for average WhoScored rating (6.65) among Owls players with ten or more starts.

Similarly, no Wednesday star is averaging as many tackles as the industrious central midfielder, who currently sits on 3.1 tackles per 90 minutes at a success rate of 66%, via WhoScored.

It leaves Thompson with a tricky dilemma to solve – he could revert back to a three-man defence, of course, but following the suspension to Liam Shaw, he will need to make changes in the middle either way.

Luongo would have been a nice option to have, as evident above, his work-rate is second to none, so it will come down to either Joey Pelupessy or Chelsea loanee Izzy Brown.

The Dutchman hasn’t started any of the Owls’ last three league games, which is understandable given his paltry average WhoScored rating of 6.37, which sees him sit 19th overall – or second-bottom for those starting 12 or more matches this term.

Pelupessy hasn’t managed above a 6.5 rating more than once in his last seven appearances, in which he’s been dribbled past eight times and has committed nine fouls.

Then there’s the conundrum over Brown, who has been restricted to just three starts all term and only 57 minutes since November. He has not been involved in any of their last six league games either, per Transfermarkt.

You can see why Luongo’s persistent absence is bad news for Thompson, though he should be used to it by now considering the length of time the Aussie maestro has been on the treatment table this season.

No Shaw and no Pelupessy, it’s not looking good for the Owls as they face the promotion-chasing Bees tonight.

AND in other news, Thompson handed perfect opportunity to unleash “whole-hearted” Sheffield Wednesday gem TONIGHT…

West Brom paying the price over Ivanovic

A lot is going wrong at West Brom.

Though the most significant issue has certainly been their defensive frailties – the Baggies hold the worst defensive record across Europe’s elite divisions and have leaked a whopping 15 more goals than any other Premier League side this season (54 in total).

Perhaps this comes as a surprise as Sam Allardyce is well-stocked in the defensive department with no fewer than five central options alone, one of which is veteran Branislav Ivanovic.

It does beg the question, exactly why have Albion been so poor defensively when they have a three-time Premier League winner in their ranks? At 36, is it a case of him being past it?

He should still be able to pass valuable snippets onto the likes of Kyle Bartley, Semi Ajayi and Dara O’Shea, who are all seemingly above him in the pecking order under Big Sam.

“He is a competitive animal with a big heart,” once claimed Jose Mourinho as he dubbed the Serbian defender one of his best-ever signings at Stamford Bridge.

Yet, he’s been anything but.

As per average WhoScored ratings, Ivanovic is among the lowest-ranked players at 6.22 – only three players with eight or more starts this term are below him.

And that answers the aforementioned question – maybe he really is done at this sort of level.

The 6 foot 1 stalwart has evidently struggled with the high intensity of the English top-flight as he ranks among the worst culprits for successful pressures on the opposition, managing 22% per 90 as per FBRef.

By comparison, Bartley (31.3%) and Ajayi (39.9%) are much quicker to break out from the back to thwart the opposition, whilst a better barometer could be Thiago Silva at Chelsea – another veteran with an illustrious career – he’s managing a 40.5% success rate.

It is thought that the 36-year-old is the highest earner at the Hawthorns, raking in a cool £66.5k-per-week, which is more than club captain Jake Livermore (£35k-per-week) and big-money summer signing Grady Diangana (£37.5k-per-week).

That’s just not a great deal on the face of it, so sporting and technical director Luke Dowling has a lot to answer for. Ivanovic has already cost the club £1.5m in wages alone, and that figure will rise to £3.5m come to the end of the current campaign.

Overall, the decision to sign Ivanovic in the summer is looking worse and worse by the week. He’s not started in six outings and is clearly way off the pace.

File this one in the Dowling disaster folder.

AND in other news, West Brom could have another Kevin Phillips right under their nose…

Why do Wolves need to axe Cutrone?

After a successful week on and off the field, things are starting to look a little rosier for Nuno Santo and Wolves.

They defeated Chorley in the FA Cup and then finally dipped their toes into the transfer market to sign Willian Jose on loan from Real Sociedad. With both of those things in mind, change is needed in their attack.

On the chalkboard

Wolves’ 1-0 win over non-league Chorley was far from pretty. Those types of cup ties are never too attractive in terms of the football, but the display that Nuno’s men put in was rather diabolical.

They had fewer chances to score than the National League North side and struggled to interlink between defence and attack.

It was torrid display that was typified by an isolated Patrick Cutrone. With Jose on the verge of arriving that day, the Italian needed to put in a convincing display.

Unfortunately, he failed to do so. Cutrone completed just 11 passes all night, finishing with a success rate of 61%.

Alarmingly, only substitute Adama Traore and John Ruddy completed fewer passes. On top of that, Cutrone’s 24 touches were exactly the same as their goalkeeper and only more than Traore and Pedro Neto. Considering the latter was also a substitute, it didn’t bode well.

Against non-league opposition, Cutrone should have been one of the stars of the show. Instead, much like his Molineux career, he struggled.

The solution

Wolves may not have too much depth in attacking areas right now but they simply have to drop the £62.9k-per-week Cutrone against Chelsea.

If he struggled against Chorley, then he’d surely also find life difficult against a Blues side with a point to prove under new manager Thomas Tuchel.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-this-weeks-latest-wolves-news” title=”Read this week’s latest Wolves news”]

As such, they must drop the Italy international to the bench and field someone else in attack. Nuno preferred a two-pronged strike force last Friday but on this occasion, he should go with one up top.

Whether that’s Fabio Silva or new signing Jose, both feel more equipped at this moment in time to danger Chelsea.

The club’s record signing scored against West Brom and their recent addition from Real Sociedad scored twice in his final game before coming to England.

Of course, Silva has hardly been rampant in front of goal but his confidence under Nuno is growing.

This is the ideal time to put faith in the young Portuguese – not someone who has failed the current manager on a regular basis.

Southampton interested in LFC’s Minamino

Southampton are reportedly interested in signing Takumi Minamino on loan from Liverpool before the transfer window shuts this evening.

According to journalist David Ornstein in The Athletic, the Saints are working on a deal to sign the Japanese international on loan for the rest of the season.

The 26-year-old, who earns £75k per week at Liverpool, has struggled for game time in Jurgen Klopp’s side this season, despite the injury problems at Liverpool, and has made just seven starts in all competitions.

Minamino joined from RB Salzburg in December 2019 but has struggled to impress in his time with the Reds thus far, with just four goals and two assists in his 31 appearances for the club.

Even with Liverpool’s recent goalscoring woes, Klopp was reticent to turn to Minamino, with the winger’s six-minute cameo against Burnley his only Premier League appearance of 2021.

Therefore, it seems as if he is going to struggle to force his way into the first-team picture with Liverpool, especially now the Reds look to have rediscovered their form in front of goal in the last two fixtures against West Ham and Spurs.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/liverpool-deadline-day-latest-news-transfer-rumours-and-more” title=”Deadline day is here: Read the latest Liverpool news, transfer rumours and more!”]

A move to Southampton for the rest of the season could be the ideal way for Minamino to get regular football in the Premier League, in the hope that he could return to the Reds a much more confident player in the summer, as unfortunately, it seems as if he will be sat on the bench for much of the season if he stays on Merseyside.

Earlier this season, Klopp labelled the 26-year-old a “machine” for his work rate in a Champions League fixture against Ajax, and a loan move to Southampton could allow him to showcase this on a more regular basis, in a deal that could potentially suit both parties.

Hopefully, for Minamino, a deal with the South Coast club can be agreed, as he deserves a chance to show what he can do in the Premier League, something he was always going to struggle to achieve with the Reds due to the quality of their front three.

Exclusive: Windass discusses Hasenhuttl

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, former Hull City midfielder Dean Windass has been discussing Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, after he has been linked with the Chelsea job in recent weeks.

After an impressive start to the season, Chelsea have endured a dreadful run of form recently, which has seen them drop to ninth position in the Premier League table.

Unsurprisingly, it has been suggested that manager Frank Lampard is close to losing his job at Stamford Bridge, with Hasenhuttl tipped as one possible successor with the London club.

The Austrian manager has had a great turnaround with Southampton over the past 18 months, turning them into top-six contenders after it looked as if they were set for a relegation battle in the first half of last season.

Here’s what Windass had to say about the chances of Chelsea hiring Hasenhuttl when speaking exclusively to FFC:

“I can’t see him going to Chelsea. I can’t see Chelsea getting rid of Frank this season, or next season. I think when the supporters are back, then there’s a different bearing on football, there’s a different bearing on life.

“It’s amazing that the Southampton manager, last year. was probably the favourite to get the sack and now you’re talking about him managing in the top-four. What an unbelievable job by the way. They do actually remind me of Liverpool now in the sense of the way they press, the energy, the pace and that they’ve got an out-and-out centre-forward.

“Will he get another job? If they finish in the top-four this season, certainly. If the Southampton manager gets into the top-four, he will have a job for life, wherever he wants.”

Windass certainly feels that if the Saints continue to impress, then Hasenhuttl could get a job wherever he wants in the future.

However, he feels that Chelsea will stick with Lampard despite their recent results, so perhaps the Austrian won’t be moving to Stamford Bridge anytime soon.

Such a move would represent an opportunity for the Southampton manager to be reunited with Timo Werner, who he worked with at RB Leipzig, as well as some world-class players, so if Chelsea do end up making an approach, it may be difficult to convince him to stay with the South Coast club.

Newcastle outcast Christian Atsu has been bleeding Mike Ashley dry

After arriving in a £6m deal from Chelsea in the summer of 2017, it’s fair to say things haven’t quite worked out for Christian Atsu at Newcastle.

The versatile midfielder had spent the previous campaign on loan at the Magpies, impressing Rafa Benitez enough to try and get a permanent deal over the line, with the then Newcastle boss raving about the fact they eventually got their man.

He said: “We are happy to sign a good player. He’s shown us that he’s a good professional and someone who is very keen to learn and improve.  Christian has been a key part of our promotion campaign and he wants to help us to build something for the future.”

Fast forward a few years later however, and Atsu is barely getting a look-in at St James’ Park, a mere after-thought. So much so that his only appearance in a Newcastle shirt this season has been a ten-minute outing in the Carabao Cup against Blackburn Rovers in the second round – other than that, he hasn’t even made a single match-day squad.

The Ghana international enjoyed his best time on Tyneside under Benitez, scoring eight goals and providing five assists, but current boss Steve Bruce has made his feelings clear about him.

Speaking earlier in September, he said: “I like Christian – the same goes for (Yoshinori) Muto – trains every day, works tirelessly, (and is) a good professional. But in a situation where, are they going to play enough? There has to come a time when they go and play football.”

Atsu failed to get a move away from St James’ Park however, and whilst his contract is coming to an end when the season finishes, he will still have cost the club some big-money.

In fact, coupled with his transfer fee and wages, the Ghanaian will have cost Newcastle £11.5m since arriving. A complete waste of resources on a player who just hasn’t hit the heights.

Neil Lennon must not ignore recent pledge from Leigh Griffiths

Neil Lennon’s Celtic are struggling to find their feet again after a loss against Rangers rocked their form. The Old Firm derby saw the Hoops defeated on home soil, which has heavily impacted the team’s performance.

Celtic are currently being hammered left, right and centre by injury blows and positive cases of coronavirus. The latter has seen the likes of Odsonne Edouard ruled out of action, but he made a much-anticipated return during their clash against Lille in the Europa League.

Focus now shifts once again to Aberdeen, who held the Hoops to a 3-3 draw in the league last Sunday. The two sides will meet again tomorrow in the Scottish Cup and Lennon will be back at the drawing board and considering his options.

Leigh Griffiths looking to make changes

Due to injury and also more than likely the poor form, the manager has been chopping and changing his lineups heavily recently. Lennon has switched between a back three to a back four, and a front three to a double strike force. Star player Edouard was on the bench last time out, limited to less than half an hour of action in France.

One man who he could turn to though is Leigh Griffiths, although it will mean he will need to serve a generous plate of humble pie.

After the Hoops disappointed Lennon with a draw in their opening Veolia Trophy fixture, he let loose on the striker, who hadn’t travelled with the team.

“I’m not happy,” he told talkSPORT. “I think that’s fairly obvious by the fact that we’ve left him [Griffiths] behind. He’s come back out of condition and overweight. Any physical work we asked him to do he was coming out of saying he was injured. That’s going to be the case because he’s out of condition. So it would have been absolutely pointless bringing him with us. He wouldn’t have been fit to play.”

But Griffiths is on a mission to change the gaffer’s perspective of him. Despite making just three league appearances for Celtic this season, he has scored twice – both times from off the bench (via Transfermarkt).

Lennon is currently switching up his attack in desperate search for a winning combination. The £15,000 per week forward’s attitude is just short of waving his hands and the air and calling for his attention.

Griffiths expressed his desire to edge himself into the club’s top 20 highest scorers in a recent interview with the Glasgow Times.

This burning desire could be enough to transform the Hoops’ season and change Lennon’s mind. He will be hoping that he is given a chance to prove himself against Aberdeen tomorrow.

Exclusive: Chris Kirkland believes Leeds should’ve signed Ben Foster

Leeds United should have “gone and signed” Ben Foster this summer, according to former Wednesday goalkeeper Chris Kirkland, who has been speaking exclusively to Football FanCast.

The Whites gained promotion from the Championship to feature in the top-flight for the first time in 16 years and signed no fewer than five new additions during the summer, splashing a club-record £26m on Rodrigo from Valencia as well as bringing back Jack Harrison on loan from Manchester City.

Victor Orta also secured the permanent signature of Illan Meslier, who quickly established himself as Marcelo Bielsa’s no.1 between the sticks following Kiko Casilla’s eight-game ban last season.

Despite the 20-year-old joining the club from Lorient, Kirkland believes that the Watford veteran would’ve been exactly what the Yorkshire giants needed for a fair crack at the big time.

He told FFC:

“I’d have gone and signed Ben Foster, all day long. When you come up to the Premier League you need somebody that’s got an experience at a big club, and Leeds are a huge club.

“Listen, I’ve not seen the Leeds keepers too much. But again, if you’re asking me would I sign Ben Foster over them? Yeah. I don’t need to know much about them.

“Because unless they’re Alisson, which they’re not, then I would say go and sign Ben Foster 100%.”

The 37-year-old has had a wealth of experience in the Premier League, playing a total of 364 times where he has kept 90 clean sheets and conceded 521 goals for the likes of Manchester United, Birmingham City, West Brom and of course, the Hornets.

Neither Meslier until this season, nor Casilla have featured in the English top-flight, so a move for the 6 foot 4 glovesman would’ve made sense.

Foster is only on around £32.5k-per-week at Vicarage Road and has continued to be their main man in goal, keeping four clean sheets in ten Championship outings.

Whether it’s something Bielsa and Orta want to revisit in January or next summer very much remains to be seen.
