Neither a full match, nor a Super Over could separate the two teams at the top of South Africa’s domestic twenty-over competition table in a match which was eventually decided on boundary count. Lions beat Knights by virtue of the seven sixes and 11 fours they struck compared to the three sixes and 14 fours Knights managed, after they were all square on 161 for 7 in the allocated overs and 7 for 1 in the Super Over. The difference was down to Chris Gayle, who marched to his third milestone in as many matches. Gayle had a half-century and the competition’s only hundred so far to his name before this game and made a second fifty, which included eight fours and a six before he was run-out.Gayle and Alviro Petersen gave the Lions a sparking start, with 80 runs inside the first 10 overs but a mid-innings wobble almost derailed them. None of their batsmen after Neil McKenzie made any significant contributions as Lions lost five wickets for 44 runs, largely thanks to seamer Shadley van Schalkwyk, who claimed 2 for 17 in his four overs.Chris Morris’ 22 off nine balls took the Lions above the 150 mark but they would have known they would need a strong performance to defend against a Knights line-up who have batted well in the competition so far.Knights were aggressive in the reply once again and raced to 50 before five overs had been completed before they lost their first wicket. Gerhardt Abrahams ‘run-out gave Lions an opening and they prised further with two more wickets in the next two overs.Pite van Biljon and Diego Rosier had to rebuild and their 31-run fourth-wicket stand but legspinner Eddie Leie took two wickets in two balls to leave Knights at 90 for 5 and Lions in the driving seat. Obus Pienaar took the Knights within touching distance of victory but a wicket in the final over from Lions’ best-performing seamer Hardus Viljoen saw the match tied.Lonwabo Tsotsobe, who had been expensive in the game, conceded just seven runs in the Super Over and took a wicket to leave Lions with what seemed a straightforward task. Gayle took four off Russell’s first ball but was then bowled by a perfect yorker to leave Petersen and Morris to collect singles in a field Knights refused to bring in. Once they had got to seven, Petersen blocked the final ball, knowing Lions would win because of a higher boundary count.Dolphins, the defending champions, spun their way to a bonus-point victory over Titans, who remain winless in the competition. Twin half-century partnerships at the top set Dolphins up for a formidable score, but it was the six wickets shared between Prenalen Subrayen and Keshav Maharaj that ensured a dominant showing.Although none of the Dolphins batsmen managed a half-century, their top four all made contributions. Morne van Wyk’s 37 came off just 14 balls and provided an aggressive start. They reached 53 inside four over and 100 before the halfway mark, but Darren Sammy, Corbin Bosch and Tabraiz Shamsi pulled things back. Sammy took the first two wickets and Ethy Mbhalati returned to pluck a pair of the middle-order, which kept the Dolphins to six runs under 200.Titans needed a strong display, but they were never really in it. They managed only one individual score over 30, and the succumbed to mounting pressure. Five of the top six batsmen were caught attempting to go big and misreading the pace of the pitch. That allowed Subrayen and Maharaj to slice through the Titans’ batting and leave them sharing last place with Warriors.Dolphins are up to second on the table, but have played one more match than all the other teams except Cobras, who have two games in hand.

Kapil's maiden ton defies New Zealand A

Aneesh Kapil struck his maiden first-class hundred for Surrey as the final day against New Zealand A at The Oval ended in a draw.

ScorecardAneesh Kapil’s maiden first-class century defied New Zealand A•PA PhotosAneesh Kapil struck his maiden first-class hundred for Surrey as the final day against New Zealand A at The Oval ended in a draw.It was an unexpectedly frustrating finale for New Zealand A as Kapil made an unbeaten 104 to give Surrey a lead of 254 and then Surrey took the first six wickets for 81 in the evening session before B.J. Watling held out for a draw.It was a disappointing end to a successful New Zealand A tour that was disrupted badly by the weather. Four of their 13 games were washed out and three more decided by the Duckworth Lewis system. But their record was excellent nevertheless with only one defeat – against Sri Lanka in a tri-series, also involving England Lions, that they eventually won.Surrey began the morning on their overnight 72 for 3, still 38 behind, but Surrey moved into the lead with Rory Burns and Arun Harinath still together, with Harinath greeting the introduction of Todd Astle with consecutive straight sixes into the OCS stand. When Harinath was bowled, trying to work the leg spinner Todd Astle through the leg side, the partnership was worth 97.Burns was undefeated on 94, with Kapil, 33, already batting with adventure but Burns fell immediately after the interval when he was trapped lbw by Astle. Kapil hooked Hamish Bennett for six and moved to his maiden first-class fifty for Surrey from his 66th delivery.Jade Dernbach gave Kapil invaluable support with eight wickets down and Jason Roy absent hurt. But Dernbach did not just block as Kapil neared his hundred, striking Astle for a couple of enormous sixes. Finally, Kapil pulled Scott Kuggeleiijn for four to bring up his hundred from 133 balls with Dernbach dismissed soon after. The target for the tourists was 255 from a minimum of 41 overs but Dunn quickly struck twice, including bowling Hamish Rutherford without scoring. Dernbach followed up with two wickets in two balls, Tom Latham caught by Vikram Solanki at slip for 17 and a slower ball follow-up to trap Colin de Grandhomme lbw for noug to leave New Zealand A 27 for four. When the sixth wicket fell, a surprise Surrey win was in the offing, but Watling ensured a draw with a much-needed half-century.

Lyth is most gifted Yorkshire batsman – Gale

ScorecardAdam Lyth’s double hundred brought comparisons with past masters•Getty Images

For young men such as Adam Lyth and Alex Lees, to be sitting alongside Percy Holmes and Herbert Sutcliffe, Jack Brown and John Tunnicliffe in the record books might bring a certain pride but not a sense that it is relevant to their own careers. They have that distinction whether they overly care or not, following their partnership of 375 for Yorkshire’s first second-innings wicket, but you suspect the words of their captain with reference to admired contemporaries might mean more. This was the fourth highest partnership in Yorkshire’s first-class history, behind the famous 555 of Holmes and Sutcliffe against Essex at Leyton in 1932, the 554 put on by Brown and Tunnicliffe against Derbyshire at Chesterfield in 1898, and the 378 scored by the same pair together against Sussex at Bramall Lane in Sheffield, the previous year.Figures from history, great ones of course, but Lyth in particular may well be more excited to know that when Andrew Gale, Yorkshire’s captain, watches him playing the kind of elegant, artistic and beautifully timed shots of which he is supremely capable on days such as this and he thinks of Ian Bell, a batsman in the English game of today who has few peers.”I’ve said to Adam all along that of all the Yorkshire lads that have been playing for England recently — Root, Bairstow, Ballance — he is the one with the most ability,” Gale said.”He has probably not been as consistent as he would have liked to be over the last three or four years since coming into the team, he’s lacked discipline in his innings at times, gone through the gears too quickly, but he has worked hard on that throughout the winter and has matured a lot.”That has been the frustration from our point of view, that he has not kicked on the way he would have liked and commanded a place. But when he plays like that he is so fluent, no one can bowl to him, he scores runs around the wicket and is so easy on the eye, very much out of the Ian Bell mould.”Lyth and Lees deserve credit for stamina too, having begun their alliance at 12.17pm on Sunday and remained together until 2.15pm on Monday, when Lees tried to hit Matthew Spriegel over mid-off but put the ball in the hands of Maurice Chambers.Lees fell for 138, his innings the more prosaic, but demonstrating the stubborn, selfish streak that also went down well with Gale. Lyth survived for another 40 minutes before the persevering Andrew Hall finally drew him into nibbling at one outside off stump to be caught behind. Lyth’s 230 was his second double-hundred, ending 18 runs short of equalling his career-best 248 not out against Leicestershire in 2012. He had batted for eight hours precisely. As Gale agreed, he is a lovely player to watch, with timing and touch to match any English batsman in the Championship on his day. Among 31 fours it was difficult to remember any that did not come off the bat exactly as intended. His 784 runs from 11 first-class innings this season make him the leading run scorer in the country, ahead of Worcestershire’s Daryl Mitchell and Samit Patel, both of whom are in the selectors’ notebooks.Consistency is the key for Lyth. Last summer, he made only 730 runs in 27 innings in the Championship, and that in a side close to winning the title. There is something to prove yet, but he is moving in the right direction. The partnership, the biggest in this season’s Championship, also set a record for the highest opening partnership against Northamptonshire and the highest for any wicket bar one, the 385 added by Ted Bowley and Maurice Tate of Sussex for the second wicket at Hove in 1921.After quick half-centuries from Aaron Finch and Jack Leaning accelerated the Yorkshire total to 546 for 3, Gale’s declaration that left the home side chasing 432 to win.The Yorkshire attack has a good deal more potency and sustainability than Northamptonshire’s and they have already made inroads. Tim Bresnan had James Middlebrook caught behind and Stephen Peters snapped up by an exuberant Lyth at second slip, and Jack Brooks has dismissed David Sales, who was plumb in front. The pitch was never so lively as the first day suggested and after a couple of days of sunshine is playing nicely but seven more wickets should not be beyond Yorkshire.

Brendon McCullum, the New Zealand captain, and Ross Taylor will miss the limited-overs tour to Sri Lanka, which starts on November 10, in order to prepare for the home series against West Indies. Kane Williamson will lead New Zealand in the three ODIs and two T20Is in Sri Lanka. Luke Ronchi and Ian Butler will replace McCullum and Taylor in the squad.Bruce Edgar, New Zealand Cricket’s general manager – national selection, said the pair will not travel to Sri Lanka so that they can have “red-ball preparation” ahead of the home series against West Indies. New Zealand are scheduled to play three Tests, five ODIs and two T20Is against West Indies, between December 3 and January 15, 2014. This will be followed by a home series against India, comprising five ODIs and two Tests, between January 19 and February 18, 2014.”Ross and Brendon need red-ball preparation to be at their best for the summer,” Edgar said. “Both players are vital to our success and fine-tuning their red-ball skills before the West Indies series starting in early December is paramount.”McCullum and Ross will play in the Plunket Shield, New Zealand’s first-class competition, and are also likely to feature in a few games for New Zealand XI before the first Test against West Indies on December 3.Edgar also said that the board was trying to manage player workloads effectively in the lead-up to bigger competitions, like the World Cup 2015, and stressed that resting senior players allowed the team to develop a larger talent pool in limited-overs cricket.”This summer we have 37 days of international cricket at home and Brendon and Ross are expected to play all of these, so it’s essential that we manage their workloads,” he said. “It’s important we provide game time to a wider playing group in one-dayers and Twenty20s, and establish a bigger bench of playing experience with the upcoming Twenty20 World Cup in Bangladesh next year and World Cup 2015 beyond that.”New Zealand will play the first two ODIs against Sri Lanka on November 10 and 12 in Hambantota, followed by the third ODI in Dambulla on November 16. The two T20Is will be held in Kandy on November 19 and 21.New Zealand squad for Sri Lanka ODIs and T20Is: Kane Williamson (capt), Corey Anderson, Ian Butler, Anton Devcich, Grant Elliott, Tom Latham, Mitchell McClenaghan, Nathan McCullum, Kyle Mills, Adam Milne, Colin Munro, James Neesham, Luke Ronchi, Hamish Rutherford

Haddin back in ODI side, Wade axed

Matthew Wade has been axed as Australia’s one-day wicketkeeper in favour of Brad Haddin and Fawad Ahmed has also been dropped for Xavier Doherty for the upcoming tour of India

Brydon Coverdale19-Sep-2013Matthew Wade has been axed as Australia’s one-day wicketkeeper in favour of Brad Haddin and Fawad Ahmed has also been dropped for Xavier Doherty for the upcoming tour of India. The 14-man squad will be led by Michael Clarke, if his back injury allows him to, and he will be one of three certainties for the first Test at the Gabba – along with Haddin and Shane Watson – on the near month-long trip in the lead-up to the Ashes. The selection of Clarke, Watson and Haddin means they will all miss the first round of Sheffield Shield matches, leaving them only two matches each to readjust to the longer format and the Australian conditions before the Brisbane Test. England’s cricketers, by comparison, will have three games to acclimatise and it is not a dissimilar scenario to the disastrous 2010-11 Ashes, when England’s players were better prepared than the Australians. However, it is still possible that Clarke will not take part in the Indian trip after he suffered a recurrence of his ongoing back problem at the end of the limited-overs series in England. In India in March, Clarke missed a Test due to his back injury for the first time in his career, and he was also troubled by his back in the lead-up to the Ashes in England.”After a long tour Michael Clarke’s back condition has flared up again and he has been selected subject to fitness,” John Inverarity, the national selector, said. “He has returned to Australia for further assessment and the national selection panel hopes that it will improve in time for the Indian tour.”The dumping of Wade caps off a difficult few months for him after Haddin reclaimed the Test wicketkeeping position for the Ashes in England. In the one-day series that followed, Wade made 0, 36 and 0 and collected three dismissals, and Haddin’s return could be a long-term option for the selectors after Haddin expressed his desire last month to play on in international cricket until the end of the 2015 World Cup.”Matthew Wade has been omitted due to lack of form and has been replaced by Brad Haddin, who captured an Ashes series record of dismissals in July and August,” Inverarity said. “Matthew is 25 years of age and has a great deal of natural ability both as a batsman and as a keeper. The NSP is confident that Matthew will regain form and press hard for selection in the not too distant future.”That Wade is no longer the incumbent in any format due to poor form – there is a T20 international in Rajkot before the seven-match ODI series – raises the question of whether he would remain next in line behind Haddin over the Australian summer. The Tasmania wicketkeeper Tim Paine could force himself ahead in the queue with a strong start to the domestic season, while Queensland’s Chris Hartley could also find himself in contention if a Test replacement is needed. The return of Doherty for the Indian trip was not unexpected but the omission of Ahmed was perhaps surprising, given he had been blooded on the England tour. Instead, he will have the chance to press for Ashes consideration in three Sheffield Shield outings, although Nathan Lyon is likely to remain the first-choice spinner for at least the beginning of the Ashes.”Fawad bowled well with his limited opportunities in the rain-affected series and better than his figures would suggest,” Inverarity said. “The NSP looks forward to Fawad getting plenty of bowling in the busy domestic schedule that begins at the end of this month.”Also gone from the ODI squad that toured England are Josh Hazlewood and the injured Shaun Marsh, while the allrounder Moises Henriques has been recalled. There will also be a significant change in the off-field staff for the Australians, with the fielding mentor Steve Rixon to lead the tour as head coach while Darren Lehmann spends time at home.”As with the successful tour of the UAE last year we will have Steve Rixon acting as head coach in India,” Pat Howard, Cricket Australia’s general manager of team performance, said. “Darren has been on the road and away from home for a considerable amount of time. This is a great opportunity for Darren to refresh, work with the states and provide others with opportunities.”Australia squad Shane Watson, Aaron Finch, Phillip Hughes, Michael Clarke (capt), George Bailey (vice-capt), Adam Voges, Brad Haddin (wk), Moises Henriques, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Johnson, James Faulkner, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Clint McKay, Xavier Doherty.

Scotland win T20 series 2-0

Calum MacLeod helped Scotland beat Kenya by seven wickets with nine balls to spare to clinch the T20 series 2-0 in Aberdeen

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Jul-2013
ScorecardCalum MacLeod helped Scotland beat Kenya by seven wickets with nine balls to spare to clinch the T20 series 2-0 in Aberdeen. After restricting Kenya to 100 for 8, Scotland started slow in their chase. They lost their first wicket in the seventh over at the score of 32 and still needed 49 from the last eight overs when second wicket fell in the 12th over. MacLeod continued at the other end to make sure Scotland reached the target with ease, by scoring 16 off the first three balls of the 19th over to finish the chase. After opting to bat, Kenya lost four wickets in the first seven overs, including two ducks, which put them under pressure straightaway. Duncan Allan scored 18 after that but their last four contributed only 15 runs together. Collins Obuya was unbeaten with a 42-ball 38 which took them to 100 but it wasn’t competitive enough. Calvin Burnett finished with 3 for 18 and Majid Haq picked up two wickets.

Ashwani Kumar on his debut: 'Was feeling pressure, didn't have lunch'

The left-arm seamer became the first Indian to take a four-wicket haul on IPL debut

ESPNcricinfo staff31-Mar-2025Mumbai Indians (MI) left-arm seamer Ashwani Kumar made history by becoming the first Indian bowler to take a four-wicket haul on IPL debut, against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday.”I was feeling really good. There was a little pressure earlier, but thanks to the atmosphere of the team, I didn’t feel any pressure,” Ashwani, 23, told the host broadcaster at the break after KKR were dismissed for 116.Ashwani, who was bought for INR 30 lakh at the mega auction last year, said he had been nervous and skipped lunch before the evening game began at 7.30pm. “I didn’t have anything for lunch, I just had a banana. There was a little pressure. I wasn’t feeling hungry,” he said. “But still, I played well, so it’s good.”Related

He struck with his first delivery, having KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane caught at deep point. Rinku Singh was also caught at deep point in Ashwani’s second over, before Manish Pandey was bowled three balls later. In this third over, Ashwani bowled Andre Russell for 5 and finished with 4 for 24 in three overs. While the MI team management made game plans for Ashwani, their main instruction to him was to go out and enjoy his debut. “We had plans. But [Hardik Pandya, the MI captain] said that since it’s your debut match, enjoy yourself. Just keep bowling the way you have been,” Ashwani said. After being hit for a boundary by Russell first ball of his third over, Ashwani responded with two short balls before bowling a full one that the batter missed with an attacking shot. “Yes, the captain did have a role. Hardik had told me that he will try to attack you,” Ashwani said. “He told me to bowl into his body. But the situation was such that he tried to hit me and got out.”1:36

With KKR all out in 16.2 overs, Ashwani didn’t complete his spell, but played a crucial role in putting MI on course to earn their first points of the season.Hardik said that Ashwani impressed in a practice game before the match, and showed a range of skills which led to him being picked for their first home game of the season.”For today’s game, it was simply, we played a practice game and he had that zip, he had that little late swing, something off the wicket and had a different action and plus, he was a lefty,” Hardik said at the post-match presentation ceremony. “We just thought that because of the options he has… the good death options, we just backed him.”First of all, the way he took that wicket of Russell, it was a very, very crucial wicket,” Hardik said, before also praising him for his leaping catch at mid-off to account for KKR opener Quinton de Kock. “I think that was terrific to see a fast bowler jumping that high.”
