Strauss the leader shows how it's done

Andrew McGlashan presents the plays of the first day in Barbados

This doesn’t look like the worst of Tests to miss for a bowler, which could provide some solace for Steve Harmison. His omission surprised many, but the disappointment he felt may have eased as he watched Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook carve West Indies to all corners in the most benign of conditions. Cruising is a popular way to reach Barbados and the openers did just that for two sessions. This was England’s first double-century opening stand since Strauss and Marcus Trescothick added 273 at Durban in 2004, but runs alone aren’t going to be enough. They are the side that needs to win and all the talk has been about whether they can take 20 wickets. That is going to require hard toil from the four main bowlers whenever England have finished filling their boots.Opening batsmen have to deal with their fair share of hostile conditions where the ball is swinging and seaming, only to then watch when the middle order takes the glory. Today was their chance. Opening partnerships can do so much to set the tone of an innings and a match. When England found themselves 1-0 in the 2005 Ashes, Strauss and Trescothick came out all-guns blazing at Edgbaston, adding 112 before lunch to show Australia they wouldn’t be backed into a corner. As Duncan Fletcher said in his recent column, the team were able to play that way because, despite defeat at Lord’s, they had the confidence gained from prolonged success. It is no coincidence that England’s decline in fortunes since 2005 can be traced to the loss of Trescothick. Injury to Andrew Flintoff and Simon Jones, coupled with Harmison’s loss of form, have all been crucial, but the impact of losing Trescothick was immense. He gave the side impetus, but also had the ability to build Test centuries while allowing his partner – often it was Strauss – to play second fiddle. When Trescothick pulled out of the 2006-07 Ashes, Strauss tried to reinvent himself as the dasher, but two errant pull shots in Brisbane showed it was a game plan that didn’t suit. “I tried to do that against Australia in the Ashes and it didn’t go very well for me,” he said. “I think it’s more a case of assessing the wicket and assessing the bowlers then deciding the odds are in my favour. The more experienced you become as a batsman the better you are at judging that.”He perhaps felt forced into the new role by Cook’s style of play which didn’t (and still doesn’t) lend itself to quick scoring. It is why there has been a concern that the current pair are too similar to be an ideal opening combination. But new relationships need time to flourish and the captain and vice-captain are beginning to gel. The 229-run stand was their sixth hundred-plus effort since they were reunited at the beginning of the home series against New Zealand last year. What has marked the two most recent performances, here and in Antigua, has been the newest evolution of Strauss’s play. He showed at the ARG an aggression that hadn’t been seen since 2005, while at the same time remaining compact and using the shots he feels comfortable with. This innings was another free-flowing display, admittedly helped by inconsistent bowling.”You get a rhythm to your batting on any given day and I felt that if I continued being positive it was the best way for me to go in this instance,” he said. “The reality is that it is great to be playing with freedom here, but I personally believe you have to earn the right to play with that freedom and maybe the grafting innings I played last summer have given me enough confidence to play that way.”If it’s difficult to believe that this is same batsman who was dropped, that’s because he has emerged a very different character and his standing among England’s elite is rising by the day. He now has more hundreds than Alec Stewart managed in 133 Tests and the same as Michael Atherton and Nasser Hussain managed in 100 each.Captaincy affects batsmen in different ways, but after the tough start at Sabina Park it appears to have brought Strauss out of his shell. Strauss circa 2007 or 2008 wouldn’t have dreamt of reaching his hundred with a six over deep midwicket. There’s also his one-day role to consider. He is the limited-overs captain for this tour by default, because the ECB didn’t want more upheaval, but he could yet have something to offer longer term. One captain is always preferable. His increased scoring rate has allowed Cook to maintain his own rhythm without the innings drawing to a halt. For someone trying to break his hundredless run, it is one less thing to worry about. And for 64 overs they dovetailed perfectly only to both fall when there was more to come; Strauss was playing well enough to reach a double, Cook was on the verge of that elusive century. But, as the cliché goes, if the team had been offered 229 at the start they’d have taken it.If the next few years work out how England hope, Strauss will lead the side through the current difficult times and in four years or so Cook will be ready to take over the reins. Nothing, in English cricket, is ever that simple but this can develop into a partnership of leadership and today they have both led from the front.

Spurs source makes Bennett claim

Speaking to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur ‘insider’ and club source John Wenham has made an exciting claim on young talent J’Neil Bennett.

The Lowdown: Barely seen at Spurs…

The 19-year-old, whilst currently shining out on loan at Crewe Alexandra, has only made one senior competitive appearance for Spurs.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, Bennett even scored his first goal for The Railwaymen last weekend – marauding down their left hand-side and driving an arrowed shot into the far corner against Burton Albion.

Despite not amassing many chances at Tottenham, it appears the teenage talent is making plenty of impressions elsewhere on his temporary stint away, with Lilywhites insider Wenham now making an exciting claim.

The Latest: Spurs source makes Bennett claim…

Speaking to FI, the club source, who regularly breaks news on his Lilywhites Rose social media page, has been left blown away by Bennett and insists he is ‘very gifted’.

“J’Neil is a really interesting player,” he explained.

“He came onto my radar as a 15 or 16-year-old, he was playing up with the Under-18s. He is very, very gifted.

“I have been really impressed with him. He has a signature move where he runs down the left, cuts in and bends it into the far corner.

“He went on trial to Crewe earlier in the summer and clearly impressed them, which is why he joined. He has such an unpredictability about him.

“I’m really pleased for him, I hope next season he can come back and maybe get another loan into the Championship or maybe challenge in the squad.”

The Verdict: Exciting times for Spurs academy…

By the sounds of Wenham’s exciting claim, Bennett can be added to the long list of talents emerging from Spurs’ academy.

There have been no shortage of them, either, with Oliver Skipp, Dane Scarlett, Nile John, Joshua Oluwayemi all turning heads in recent times.

Given Tottenham’s struggles financially due to COVID, posting losses of around £63.9 million last year alone, they may be more reliant than ever when it comes to their starlets breaking through and saving millions in transfer fees.

Aston Villa: Declan Firth on trial

Aston Villa have taken versatile Chelsea teenager Declan Firth on trial, according to Birmingham Live.

The Lowdown: Livramento interest

This isn’t the first time Villa have been interested in a Stamford Bridge teenager.

Villa were eyeing a move for Tino Livramento in the summer, however, the full-back ended up signing for Southampton and has been a regular in the Premier League under Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Johan Lange and co have now acted on another Blues youngster, with Firth only signing for at Stamford Bridge back in May.

The Latest: Firth trial

Birmingham Live shared a story on Friday evening, claiming Firth is on trial at Villa.

The 19-year-old, who can play as a left-back, left-midfielder or a right-midfielder, started for the Under-23’s in a victory over West Brom.

Ashley Preece labelled Firth’s display as ‘menacing’, with Caleb Chukwuemeka grabbing the headlines with a hat-trick in a 4-2 win.

The Verdict: Smart move?

After missing out on Livramento, it seems as if Villa have taken swift action when it comes to their interest in Firth.

Bringing him to Bodymoor Heath for a trial seems to be a smart option, and should he impress in Mark Delaney’s side, he could be the latest teenager to pen terms at the club’s academy.

We’ve seen at St Mary’s this season with Livramento the impact a youngster from Chelsea can make when given an opportunity, and who knows, Villa could be onto the next impressive talent coming out of Stamford Bridge.

In other news: Source says Lange wants 40-goal ace on £25k-p/w for Villa; he’s scoring a goal per game.

Hutton blown away by Vlasic signing for West Ham

Speaking to Football Insider, BBC Radio 5 Live pundit Alan Hutton has been left in awe of West Ham United’s signing of Croatia international Nikola Vlasic.

The Lowdown: West Ham finally land attacker…

From the beginning right through to the very end of the summer transfer window, West Ham were linked with bolstering manager David Moyes’ attacking options ahead of a long season.

The striking position was a hot topic among Irons supporters, as was as the possible signing of an attacking midfield player, with Moyes managing to bag one at the very last gasp.

West Ham allegedly turned their attention away from Jesse Lingard after learning of his £30 million asking price, going on to target former Everton man Vlasic.

As a result, the club secured a £25.7 million deal plus £7.7 million in add-ons for the attacker on deadline day (The Athletic).

The Latest: Hutton in awe of move…

Speaking to FI, the ex-Tottenham Hotspur defender waxed lyrical over this swoop and believes Vlasic could come good in the east end.

Hutton says that the 23-year-old comes as a sound alternative to Lingard.

“When you look at age and stuff comes into it. If you’re paying £30 million for someone that’s touching 30, yes he’s proven in the Premier League and had a great season last year,” the Scotsman explained when asked about Lingard vs Vlasic.

“But Vlasic, anybody that’s in the Croatian national team, you know they’re technically gifted. They prove this all the time.

“He’s got that experience, he’s young, he’s going to get better. Playing at a higher level, as in the Premier League, we’ll hopefully see the best of him.

“If you look at Moyes’ transfers that he’s made over recent seasons, it’s been unbelievable. He’s yet to miss if we’re totally honest.

“This is one I’m looking forward to seeing. The little bits I have seen of him have been very good. I’m looking forward to seeing how he does in a high-flying West Ham team.”

The Verdict: Moyes masterclass?

Going by the numbers, Vlasic certainly looks like a real bargain on paper.

For an initial £25.7m fee, West Ham may have just landed one of the coups of the window given he notched a prolific 11 goals and five assists in 26 Russian Premier League starts (WhoScored).

As well as this, Vlasic sensationally averaged 4 shots on goal per 90 in that time and 2.8 key passes – far eclipsing the numbers of every West Ham player in the Premier League last year (WhoScored).

While you could make the argument that his fine form came in an inferior division, his threat is there for all to see as he did impress at Euro 2020.

Board officials knew about IPL contracts – Labrooy

The Sri Lanka Cricketers’ Association has claimed Sri Lanka Cricket was informed that some of the country’s leading cricketers had committed to the IPL

Sa'adi Thawfeeq07-Nov-2008BCCI deal ‘still on’Graeme Labrooy, the players’ association secretary, has said Sri Lanka can take its proposed multi-million deal with the Indian board to the next level “once we get our relationship on the road”. Labrooy said the offer involved Sri Lanka’s participation in the Champions Twenty20 League for the next ten years and was put forward by the BCCI as a solution for the loss Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) would suffer due to the aborted England tour next year. However, he admitted SLC’s hardline stance against the Indian board has meant the offer couldn’t be discussed in detail during a meeting in Bangkok last month. “A delegation appointed by the sports minister went to Bangkok to confirm the offer but unfortunately we couldn’t take it any further,” Labrooy said. “At this meeting, the BCCI officials expressed their disappointment over the strained relationship that had developed between them and SLC in the past few months and wanted to know why. They didn’t say the deal is off; it is still on. Once we get our relationship on the road, we can take it to the next level.” Speaking about the offer, Labrooy said, “We went to the IPL and sought their views about the deadlock with England. They came up with a solution that if SLC was going to lose US$2 million revenue on the England tour they would compensate that loss by giving us a window [Sri Lanka[ in the Champions League from next year and for the next nine years where they would pay a sum of $3million to SLC and $1m as participation fee to the provincial side to improve its cricket.”The Sri Lanka Cricketers’ Association (SLCA) has claimed Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), including chairman Arjuna Ranatunga, was informed during a meeting in June that some of the country’s leading cricketers had committed to the IPL for the next three years. However, in July, the SLC finalised a tour of England in 2009 – currently put on hold by sports minister Gamini Lokuge – despite assuring its cricketers during that meeting that they would keep a window free for the players’ participation in IPL till 2010. The tour announcement was made in July, a month after the meeting.”We see this not as a one-off thing; we feel there is something more to it,” Graeme Labrooy, the SLCA secretary, said at a press conference in Colombo that was also addressed by Mahela Jayawardene, the Sri Lankan captain, and vice-captain Kumar Sangakkara. “Unfortunately, even in 2008, when the players had been given permission by Sri Lanka Cricket to play in the first IPL, SLC tried its best to play a one-day series in Pakistan that would have led to a direct confrontation with IPL. So it is not just the 2009 England tour.”Labrooy, Jayawardene and Sangakkara said they had decided to go public with their views after recent comments from SLC officials, including Ranatunga, questioned their commitment to playing for the country. Sangakkara said he was “disturbed” by the ongoing controversy over the players’ participation in IPL.Labrooy said that SLC’s only demand from the players during the June 12 meeting was they commit to playing 75% of the provincial season. SLC then agreed to tour England for two Tests and three ODIs after the ECB suspended bilateral ties with Zimbabwe, who were due to tour in 2009. Labrooy said Zimbabwe were slated to play three ODIs but the ECB were keen to add two Tests to give the players some practice ahead of Australia’s visit. “We were prepared to compromise and play three one-day games but England wouldn’t want to go with that. They were keen on playing two Test matches.”The key stakeholders of the game are the players. Knowing the players had signed contracts during the same period, SLC should have come back with the England proposal and sat with the players and the cricketers’ association and thrashed out the matter. It would have been resolved to a great extent and wouldn’t have gone so far.”Sangakkara and Jaywardene, who were given permission by the SLC to speak at the press conference, said they wanted to clear the air over the issue and present their “side of the story”. “We always try as players to stay away from controversy, to do what is right and to play our cricket in peace,” Sangakkara said. “There are certain things that we can ignore and take and not worry about it and make any comments. But when we are accused of misleading the public and the government of Sri Lanka, it is time for us to come out into the open and state our side of the story.”Jayawardene said the players had signed for IPL as individuals and not as part of the Sri Lankan team. “So therefore I am not the captain of this IPL group,” he said. “I am the captain of the Sri Lanka team and I am responsible for the decisions which I make on and off the field regarding the team. Above and beyond that, it’s not my responsibility. All these players have their own managers or agents and they have individually written to SLC and got permission and signed with IPL.”

Celtic: Yan Couto wants Hoops move

Manchester City right-back Yan Couto has his heart set on a move to Celtic, according to The Daily Record.

The Lowdown: Parkhead VIP

Reports over the weekend suggested that the Hoops were still holding out hope to sign Couto on a season-long loan from the Premier League champions.

The 19-year-old received the VIP treatment at Parkhead on Thursday night for Celtic’s 3-0 win over Jablonec.

Couto spent last season on loan at Spanish side Girona, who also want to land the Brazilian again during the current transfer window. However, it appears as if Celtic could well be the player’s next destination going off a report late on Saturday night.

The Latest: Saturday night update

The Daily Record revealed that Couto sees Celtic Park as his next destination following Thursday’s visit as he wants to play European football.

He is now pleading with Manchester City to grant a temporary move to Glasgow, with the Premier League champions rejecting an offer from an English Championship club for the South American.

The Verdict: Celtic’s relationship with City to shine through again?

With Couto now wanting to make the move to Scotland, you’d think that the Hoops have a real chance of securing a deal over the coming days.

Celtic appear to have a good relationship with City after moves for Patrick Roberts, Olivier Ntcham and Jeremie Frimpong in recent years, so that could help this time around.

Who knows, a positive campaign on loan at Parkhead for Couto could potentially lead to another, just as Southampton did with Mohamed Elyounoussi.

In other news: ‘Hopefully this is true’ – Many Celtic fans react as ‘good’ exit news emerges.

Celtic: Christie could still leave Parkhead

This season has so far been a period of happiness and rejuvenation for Celtic and Ange Postecoglou.

They have swept aside the rubble of a disastrous 2020/21 campaign and now the Hoops are in a position where they’re having 72 shots in successive domestic games and winning six matches on the trot.

What’s the word?

The transfer window has also been a positive time for the Bhoys.

Postecoglou has welcomed gems like Liel Abada and Kyogo Furuhashi to the club and they’ve managed to keep hold of Odsonne Edouard.

However, one man they are still struggling to keep in Glasgow is Ryan Christie. The attacking midfielder’s contract bizarrely expires in January 2022 and therefore he could leave on a free transfer in a matter of months.

Reliable reporter Alan Nixon delivered an update on Christie’s future when taking to Twitter on Sunday morning.

He said: “Southampton. Keen on Ryan Christie at Celtic. Burnley on the fringes of this. Christie can leave for nothing at end of YEAR. So a cheap deal possible by end of MONTH.”

Fans fuming

There hasn’t been a huge amount to get frustrated about from a Celtic perspective this season but losing Christie just as he finds form again would not be ideal.

At this current moment in time, the Scot is unlikely to sign a new contract and is heading out of the exit door on a free transfer or at the very most, a minimal fee.

Heading into the summer months, supporters will have been all too pleased to see him leave.

Christie had only found the net two times in his final 24 Premiership matches of the campaign and had been lamented for some woeful long-range shooting.

The £12k-per-week earned was described as a “laughing stock” by Frank McAvennie and his time at the club appeared to be coming to an end.

However, under the guidance of Postecoglou, he’s come back fighting.

The Scotland international now looks like one of the first names on the team sheet after putting in some excellent displays in the early weeks of the season.

He scored an excellent header against Jablonec in the Europa League and then put in a stunning show against Dundee. As Celtic ran out 6-0 winners, Christie picked up a hat-trick of assists in a mesmeric creative display.

All of the goals he set up were done so in stunning fashion too. He nutmegged a defender for one goal, Cruyff turned another marker for a second strike and then played an inch-perfect reverse pass for Kyogo Furuhashi’s third goal.

Christie has gone against the grain to become a vital player at Parkhead and losing him in these circumstances would surely enrage supporters who have already been so vocal against the board in the last 12 months.

Celtic desperately need to find a resolution to his future.

Celtic: Odsonne Edouard still keen on leaving Parkhead

Odsonne Edouard is still working to leave Celtic this summer despite the collapse of his move to Leicester City [GIVEMESPORT].

The Lowdown: Ange Postecoglou begins to shape his new-look 2021/22 squad

Facing a transitional season at the Celtic Park helm, Ange Postecoglou will be desperate to get his ducks in a row in order to challenge for the Scottish Premiership title.

Identifying who wants to be a part of the equation will be a key priority for the Aussie, however cutting those loose who see their future elsewhere will also take equal precedence, with Kristoffer Ajer seemingly one of the first out the door.

Another player who is crafting a Parkhead exit is 23-year-old Edouard, owing to recent developments.

The Latest: Edouard still eyeing Celtic exit after Leicester City move collapse

According to sources close to the Frenchman at Give Me Sport, the talismanic striker is still keen on an exit this window and is working with his representatives to attempt to secure a transfer [GIVEMESPORT].

Previously, Edouard looked almost certain to end up at Leicester City, only for the deal to collapse at the last minute [Foxes of Leicester].

Brighton and Hove Albion have also been linked with the former France Under-21 international in recent times [Daily Record].

The Verdict: Right time for Celtic and Edouard to part ways this summer

With his contract expiring in less than 12 months-time, it makes sense for the Celts to try and move the 6ft 2in ace on, whilst trying to make a profit on the £9million fee they acquired him for in 2018 from PSG.

In 2020/21, Edouard was in sparkling form, registering 28 goal contributions in 40 games for the Glasgow giants; 22 goals and six assists [Transfermarkt].

Furthermore, he enhanced his reputation as the Hoops chief danger man in attack, managing to record an impressive average of 3.5 shots per game in the Scottish Premiership [WhoScored].

Once labelled as ‘magnificent’ by former manager Neil Lennon, it makes sense for the club and player to amicably part ways before the window closes [Glasgow Live].

Sunderland poised to land Doyle

An update has emerged about Manchester City defender Callum Doyle, regarding Sunderland’s interest in his services.

What’s the talk?

According to Roker Report, Sunderland are in talks over a deal to sign Manchester City centre-back Callum Doyle on a two-year loan.

The report claims that the Black Cats are poised to bring him in to bolster Lee Johnson’s centre-back options, with a two-year loan being proposed instead of the standard season-long arrangement.

Johnson will be delighted

Johnson will be delighted by this deal as he will seemingly finally be able to welcome in a new addition at centre-back this summer.

He currently has two fit first-team centre-back options and only one of them, Bailey Wright, started more than 15 games in League One last season for the club.

All four of the central defenders Sunderland employ have 12 months remaining on their respective contracts, which could become an issue heading into the 2022/23 campaign as Johnson plans for the future.

Therefore, bringing in a talented defender on loan for two years could be perfect for Johnson. It will allow him and Kristjaan Speakman more time to find a permanent solution to the centre-back problem, whilst hopefully bolstering the team with an exciting signing in the short-term. This is why the ex-Bristol City boss will be buzzing with this latest update.

Manchester City’s official website names Doyle as a “brave and cultured” centre-back. This suggests that he has the ability to play out from the back whilst not shirking away from putting his body on the line defensively to keep the ball from going in the net.

Earlier this year, MEN journalist Daniel Murphy compared Doyle to Portuguese international Ruben Dias, who was crowned Premier League Player of the Year for the 2020/21 campaign.

He said:

“It was actually centre-back Callum Doyle who impressed the most.”While was he able to keep Everton’s towering forwards Tom Cannon and Tyler Onyango largely quiet, it was his play on the ball that really caught the eye.“Nearly every City move started with the defender either carrying the ball into midfield or clipping inch-perfect cross-field balls to the winger on the opposite flank. It cut an impressive impersonation of Ruben Dias and showed that it isn’t just attacking starlets that the academy is producing.”If Doyle can produce even 10% of what Dias has achieved at Man City then he could be a phenomenal signing for Sunderland. Dias averaged an impressive SofaScore rating of 7.11 in the Premier League as he helped City win the title, making zero errors leading to shots and zero errors leading to goals.Hopefully, Doyle can go someway towards emulating his City teammate and impresses in League One for Sunderland.AND in other news, “At that level, he stands out” – Exclusive: Pundit drops exciting Sunderland verdict on star…
