Speaking after the game, Klopp said: "In my more than 20 years, it was easily the most special trophy I have ever won. It is absolutely exceptional. I wish I could feel proud more often. Tonight that is the overwhelming feeling. I was proud of our people for the way they pushed us. It was nothing to do with it maybe being my last game at Wembley. It was about how everybody contributed with the kids."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Klopp was quick to point out the role of his youth players as several academy players came off the bench to freshen up the side. The Liverpool boss was full of praise for the youngsters who saw off pressure from Chelsea to win the Carabao Cup. It may be Klopp's final time at Wembley and he made sure he treasured each moment.

World Cup winner flopped at St James' ParkSuffered humbling defeatHas become an easy target for criticsWHAT HAPPENED?

The World Cup-wining forward endured a rare off day alongside the rest of his Paris Saint-Germain colleagues as they suffered a humbling defeat to Newcastle in the Champions League. Mbappe never got going in that contest, with the 24-year-old failing to sparkle on a European stage.

Newcastle had no complaints about that, with Eddie Howe’s side claiming a notable scalp. Their supporters have been revelling in a memorable triumph, while also poking fun at continental rivals. One Magpies fan posted on social media when reflecting on Mbappe’s performance: “I was confident about a win, as I went with a predicted 2-1. The team was just showing off last night though. This fella was just thinking about Greggs steak bakes all night. Right there, he was caught licking his lips thinking of his next one.”

DID YOU KNOW?

It did not take long for bakery chain Greggs to respond to that post, with another cheeky jibe aimed in the direction of Mbappe. They said when being made aware of the steak bake claims: “He’s welcome to come 4-1 this morning…”

Bruno Lazaroni, auxiliar permanente do clube, assume a equipe interinamente.

Johnson rides in Starc slipstream

Mitchell Johnson has said that he is pleased with the balance of Australia’s bowling attack, and backed himself to come out firing in the knockouts following a fairly underwhelming outing in the group stages

Daniel Brettig16-Mar-2015One of the casualties of Australia’s unduly disjointed World Cup schedule was Mitchell Johnson. Save for a ball that thudded into the arm of Brendon McCullum, his afternoon at Eden Park looked like the first net session of a new summer, an all-scrambled bowling radar and batting rhythm – he also made a duck.Having effectively two weeks between game one and game two was a major obstacle for Johnson, given how he has shown himself to be unusually durable either side of a six-month hiatus from the game for foot surgery and some overdue work on his technical and mental approaches to the game in 2011-12.Three games later and he is rediscovering his rhythm, also sitting happily in the slipstream of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood as Australia’s designated first-change bowler. Johnson’s least convincing display since Auckland actually came against Sri Lanka when a dry pitch and the selection of Xavier Doherty meant he reverted to taking the new ball.”I think it’s worked perfectly, he’s got a lot of attention,” Johnson said, smiling, of his left-arm off-sider Starc. “He’s obviously bowling very well. He’s done a really good job upfront for us. His career in one-cricket has, so far, been outstanding. He’s always performed well for us in one-day cricket. It wasn’t a surprise that he was going to perform like this through the World Cup as well.”It’s very important to play my role in the team. I’ve really enjoyed being a first-change or second-change bowler throughout this tournament. I think it’s probably suited the team, me bowling at first change and Starcy using that new ball and swinging the ball around and Josh or Patty using it at the other end pushing into the breeze. It’s worked really well. The balance that we’ve got with our bowling attack is really good at the moment.”As for my bowling, I felt like it really clicked coming into the start of the real stuff now. I feel like I’m one of those bowlers that the more I bowl the better I feel with rhythm. We’ve had five [or more] days between games and we’ve been training, but I just feel like I’m starting to click now.””Starc has always performed well for us in one-day cricket. It wasn’t a surprise that he was going to perform like this through the World Cup as well”•Getty ImagesMcCullum and Tillakaratne Dilshan have inflicted the sorts of indignities Johnson had experienced before his time away from the game but very seldom faced in the past 18 months. Dilshan’s sextet of boundaries at the SCG made for memorable viewing, but Johnson has exhibited his recently-found maturity by being able to shrug it off.”I’m ready for whatever’s going to come at me, I’m not stressed about those things,” he said. “That over against Dilshan it wasn’t a horrific over. I probably just over-pitched at the start and then back of a length, and he got away with it. I probably bowled that one short ball I wasn’t happy with, to be honest. The rest were OK.”How I fought back from that was really good for me. To be able to come back and bowl late in the game and be able to bowl that way when the wicket didn’t change. We thought it was going to slow down a bit but it was a still a pretty good wicket. We held our nerve and won the game. Luckily we’d scored a lot of runs.”Nevertheless, it doesn’t sound like Johnson will be lobbying to keep the current ODI playing conditions in place should he ever find himself on the ICC cricket committee. “There’s a couple of overs here and there that have gone for runs,” he said, “But that’s what we expect in this day and age of this game and with the way players play the game now. Two new balls with four fielders out makes it a little bit predictable.”It is something I’ve expected throughout this tournament and with the way the game is. It will be interesting to see if there’s a bit more pressure on how guys play the game. Coming into a quarter-final we’ll see if guys are still prepared to play that type of cricket.”

'WICB must build pillars of trust'

The task force appointed by the WICB to assess the contracts dispute that led to the abandonment of the tour of India has said that all three parties were at fault

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Dec-2014

The task force said the senior players had failed in their responsibility towards West Indies cricket during the tour of India•BCCI

The task force appointed by the WICB to assess the contracts dispute involving the players, WIPA, and the board, which led to the abandonment of West Indies’ tour of India in October 2014, has said that all three parties were at fault. The task force – comprising Michael Gordon, Wes Hall and Richard Cheltenham – said it was imperative that “WICB must now build pillars of trust and respect with the players”, and that the WIPA had a “very real role to play” in this process. The West Indian players pulled out of their tour of India after four ODIs, leading to the abandonment of the fifth one-dayer, a Twenty20 international and three Tests. The dispute between the players on one side, and WIPA and WICB on the other, however, had begun even before the first game. In several letters written to the WICB, West Indies ODI captain Dwayne Bravo had expressed displeasure over the new player contracts, wanted the old ones back in place, and had also demanded that the WIPA chief Wavell Hinds resign. When neither of these conditions was met, the players abandoned the tour.”We are of the view that the fundamental and overriding excuse for the players withdrawing their labour was the attempted imposition of new contractual terms of employment on the players negotiated between the board and WIPA, which the players saw for the first time after they got to India,” the task force said in its report. It said it was not able to calculate with certainty, even with the help of a labour relations expert, the compensation of each player under the new arrangement, and that there was no mention of any incentive scheme in the players’ contracts.”There is something fundamentally wrong in sending a team to faraway places with only an historical view of their terms of employment and then to radically change those historical terms after they arrive in that distant place,” the report said. “It was the conclusion of the players in India that their compensation would be reduced by some 70%. In our view it is irrelevant whether their calculations were accurate or not.”The report said there were “very real questions” as to even whether the MOU signed in September was a contract or not. “Both Michael Muirhead and Dave Cameron, CEO and president, respectively, of the board, took the view that it was an enforceable contract,” the report said. “Wavell Hinds on the other hand was equally firmly of the view that the September MOU was not in and of itself a contract but rather an agreed understanding that would lead to a collective bargaining agreement in much the same way as the prior MOU/CBA [collective bargaining agreement] arrangement had worked.”It is trite law that if two parties to a negotiation do not agree on the effect of a document coming out of these negotiations, then there is no meeting of the minds and hence no enforceable contract. The board and WIPA were attempting a sea change in the financial arrangements for West Indian professional cricketers without ensuring that there was understanding and acceptance by the WICB’s employees, the touring cricketers.”However, the task force also said “a significant proportion of the blame” laid with the players who were in a hurry to abandon the tour though Cameron and Hinds were due to arrive in India in four days’ time to discuss the issue. “Senior players in any overseas squad bear a great responsibility to set standards and create examples for the more junior players to follow. This, the task force felt, the senior players failed to do.”Among the eight recommendations made by the task force, it said, “The players’ contracts must be given to players at least three weeks before a tour. The players must return them at latest, one week before the tour. Failure to return a signed contract will disqualify the player from selection on the team.”The task force also recommended the new collective bargaining agreement should contain a provision, which stipulates that before the “withdrawal of labour or any industrial action” WIPA and the players should give a minimum period of notice – “say 14 days” – to the WICB. “This would obviate any circumstance as occurred in India. Breach of such a condition would be a breach of contract.”The WICB should convene bonding sessions twice yearly between players, management and the board to foster harmonious relations. Individual members of the executive committee which normally meets more often than the board should be selected to oversee and solve any personal or cricketing problems revealed by players.”
