Santos deve voltar à Vila Belmiro caso avance no Campeonato Paulista

Cidermen join the hunt for Iain Sutcliffe

Somerset have confirmed that they have made an offer to the unsettled Leicestershire batsman Iain Sutcliffe who topped 1000 runs in the 2002 championship season

SOMERSET11-Nov-2002Somerset have confirmed that they have made an offer to the unsettled Leicestershire batsman Iain Sutcliffe who topped 1000 runs in the 2002 championship season.Chief executive Peter Anderson told me: “Sutcliffe is the type of player we need for sure, but we have to balance any offer we make to him against the budget that we have available, and the affect that has on the salary levels of our existing players. We have to live within our means.”He continued: “What Somerset are continually up against are the larger counties who can always throw money at a problem.”Meanwhile the county have also confirmed that they are interested in Tasmanian batsman Michael Dighton who has an English qualification and who is keen to come to England and play for Somerset.Twenty six year old Dighton attended the Australian Academy in 1996, and initially played in Western Australia with club side Scarborough CC who are coached by Piran Holloway. In his twenty three first class matches the right handed batsman has scored 1373 runs at an average of just over 38, and is currently batting at number three in the Tasmanian state side that is captained by Jamie Cox.The former Somerset skipper told me: “This player has done well on the Tasmanian scene and has scored three first class centuries. I am very impressed with him and he might be just what Somerset are looking for.”Coach Kevin Shine told me: “We are looking to strengthen the top order, and if we are unlucky with Sutcliffe, Dighton might well be the answer.”Mr Anderson added: “In the near future England are going to play in Hobart and whilst he is there Vic Marks, the Somerset cricket chairman can personally check up on Dighton for us.”

Everton ‘very close’ to appointing Benitez

If you thought that Everton could move for another target in the managerial market, think again.

Lucien Favre’s expression that he doesn’t want to return to management just yet has come at the wrong time for the frustrated Goodison Park faithful.

What’s the word?

The 63-year-old rejected Crystal Palace yesterday but, despite that development, it looks as though Rafa Benitez will become the new manager of Everton.

Speaking before the Favre news came to light, The Athletic’s Greg O’Keeffe was certain that the Spaniard would be arriving in Merseyside again very shortly.

O’Keeffe was speaking on BBC Radio and said: “Nuno Espirito Santo came and went but I think Rafa Benitez has been the frontrunner for over a week now.”

He continued: “I believe that they are edging very very close to an announcement whereby they can confirm that he [Benitez] will become the next Everton manager.”

Not good news

This is an update which is likely to leave many supporters tearing their hair out over what’s going on at Everton.

When Carlo Ancelotti walked into the club, there was a sense of astonishment amongst fan groups that they’d been able to lure one of the game’s most decorated coaches to Goodison.

However, the way in which he left was almost just as mind-boggling. The Toffees were preparing for an exciting summer of transfer recruitment as Ancelotti got to sink his teeth into the finances available in Merseyside.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-everton-manager-transfer-nuno-conte-wood-marcelo” title= “Read the latest Everton manager and transfer news!”]

However, the lure of Real Madrid is great and it was a proposal which was simply too hard to turn down for the Italian. If that left fans of the club upset, they could be downright devastated when Benitez finally enters the building.

Although his CV is impressive – he won the Champions League with neighbours Liverpool – it’s his association to the red side of Merseyside which has irked certain individuals around L4.

Benitez has enjoyed a respectable career but, during his successful spell across Stanley Park, he dubbed Everton a ‘small club’. Although he has since apologised for those remarks, things aren’t forgotten very quickly in Merseyside and it would appear that fans are reluctant to see him arrive.

The news that Favre is now also off the table will be a further dagger to the heart after Christophe Galtier rejected the Toffees earlier in the week too.

With Nuno edging closer to Spurs and Galtier potentially heading to Nice, Everton are running out of alternatives to Benitez. Unfortunately for their supporters, he looks set to arrive imminently, with anger beginning to grow larger.

Pratto é registrado e poderá estrear no Morumbi contra o Mirassol

Rangers: Maguire discusses Ibrox expansion

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire believes that Glasgow Rangers could easily increase their capacity at Ibrox by 9,000 seats and still sell out the ground.

The Lowdown: Gers plan for extra seating

The stadium currently holds just under 51,000, but there is room to add more seating capacity.

Speaking to the Louden Tavern Podcast, Gers vice-chairman John Bennett has revealed that it is a mid-term goal of the 55-time Scottish champions to add more seats.

The Latest: Maguire thinks there could be room for 60,000 at Ibrox

Speaking to Football Insider, Maguire has suggested there could viably be room to have a 60,000 capacity at Ibrox. He said:

“With the Steven Gerrard factor and the fact they are competing in Europe, why can’t they be looking at something around 60,000?

“There are three clubs in London that have that capacity, so why can we not have two in Glasgow?

“Both Rangers and Celtic have fanbases that go beyond the borders of Glasgow itself. People are hugely invested in both clubs in the city but also all around Scotland as well.

“There are about 600,000 people in Glasgow but that doesn’t stop Liverpool and Everton both getting huge crowds. The same goes for both Manchester clubs.”

The Verdict: Why not?

As it stands, Ibrox is the 51st biggest stadium in Europe in terms of capacity (stadiumguide.com). 50,000+ is nothing to be sniffed at, but when you consider the Gers have already sold 44,000 season tickets for 2021/22 (rangers.co.uk) even when it is not yet clear when fans will be allowed to fully return to grounds following the global pandemic, there definitely seems room for growth.

Maguire is also correct to allude to “the Steven Gerrard” factor after the manager led them to not only end their 10-year wait for a Premiership title, but to do so unbeaten and with 102 points on the board.

A capacity of 60,000 would put them in and around Celtic Park, which can currently host 60,500. The Gers will want to match their fierce rivals in every aspect – a bigger stadium will give them plenty more possibility to do just that.

In other news, this man has been urged to stay at Rangers despite exit rumours.

Sanchez drops worrying Palace claim - Exclusive

Former Premier League boss Lawrie Sanchez claims that Crystal Palace may struggle to recruit a new manager because of their unwillingness to pay big compensation fees.

Roy Hodgson left the club at the end of the season, and they have yet to appoint his replacement.

There have been links with various managers, but talks with Nuno Espirito Santo, the former Wolves boss, broke down last week.

That has left the club chasing alternatives, amid links with Sean Dyche at Burnley, Swansea City’s Steve Cooper and Fulham’s Scott Parker. There is also talk of Frank Lampard potentially joining the club.

But Sanchez believes that owner Steve Parish will already be pining for Hodgson, having seen the managerial hunt drag on and on throughout the last few weeks.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, he said: “I don’t see Scott (Parker) at Palace but you never know. They seem reluctant to pay escape fees for Sean Dyche and for the lad at Swansea, Steve Cooper.

“They’ve got a free transfer of Nuno but then found out he’s quite expensive as well.”

Hodgson spent a total of four years at Selhurst Park, repeatedly guiding Palace to safety with little problem, just as he did in 2020/21, as they finished 14th.

Leeds’ Marcelo Bielsa has Tyler Roberts dilemma

In another impressive Leeds United win in the Premier League, one of the big highlights was the celebrations of both Tyler Roberts and Marcelo Bielsa when the Welshman netted in the dying moments against Southampton on Tuesday night.

Roberts came on for Rodrigo for the final ten minutes or so of the game, and wrapped up the three points by slotting home after Patrick Bamford’s effort was stopped by Alex McCarthy.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, the Leeds boss said: “I was happy he scored, because he had played many games and he hadn’t managed to do it. And the team in the second half looked a lot more like the team it is. And just how we unlevelled the game in the second half, Southampton could have done the same in the first half.”

And, writing in his post-match player ratings for Leeds Live, Beren Cross noted: “Was overjoyed with his goal. Very emotional celebration.”

Speaking after the game, Roberts himself said: “I’ve been striving towards scoring and been frustrated it hadn’t come before. It’s a big weight off my shoulders and the emotions came out, I’ve been practicing my finishing, so I when I got the chance, I was ready for it.”

Given his performances as a whole however, it’s difficult to see how Bielsa can reach the conclusion that Roberts could be a real first-team star for Leeds, especially when you think of any potential summer signings to come in, and also Rodrigo being more adjusted to life in English football.

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has previously reported on how with Leeds planning a big summer transfer window, the final months of the Premier League season would be make-or-break for someone like Roberts.

Former Leeds ace Noel Whelan has questioned whether the £4.5m-rated man just may not be cut out for the top-flight, saying: “Is he good enough? In my opinion he isn’t. I would love him to go out there and prove me wrong because I want everyone to succeed. I need him to show me more. He needs to show more fight and desire. I just do not see that.”

But, what he has done with his late cameo against the Saints however, is perhaps give Bielsa a bit of a headache on whether he could be an important member of the squad and as a potential rotation option, instead of just being let go permanently.

With one game left in the Premier League, Roberts maybe has one last chance to prove a real point to Bielsa and maybe save his Leeds career.

Meanwhile, a journalist has dropped a major Leeds United update…
