Sanderson, Willey run amok as Steelbacks do for Foxes

Veteran seamers reduced Leicestershire to 39 for 7 before fellow oldie Ravi Bopara saw Northants home

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Jun-2025Northamptonshire 123 for 5 (Bopara 46*, Walker 2-20) beat Leicestershire 122 (van Beek 42, Sanderson 4-15) by five wickets Northants Steelbacks maintained their 100 per cent start to the Vitality Blast after comfortably beating Leicestershire Foxes by five wickets at Northampton. The Foxes mustered only 122 after their top order was blown away by Ben Sanderson (4 for 15) and David Willey (3 for 20). It was a meagre total, albeit a decent recovery from 39 for 7 thanks to a Foxes record T20 eighth-wicket stand of 55 between Logan van Beek (42 from 42 balls) and Tom Scriven (23).The Steelbacks did not find run-scoring easy either but were always in control of the chase and reached 123 for 5 with four balls to spare. Ravi Bopara showed his experience and class in decisive fashion with a victory-clinching 46 not out from 40 balls.Steelbacks captain Willey won the toss, chose to bowl and took out two Foxes in the first over. His first ball was chipped straight to mid-wicket by Rishi Patel. His fourth sent Louis Kimber’s middle stump halfway back to Leicester. If that was spectacular, almost as much so was the one-handed slip catch by Ricardo Vasconcelos when Shan Masood edged Sanderson in the next over. Sol Budinger, having lost three partners before facing a ball, got the score moving with a couple of fours but then left his leg-stump exposed and Willey hit it. When Lewis Hill cut Sanderson to point, providing the bowler’s 100th T20 wicket for Steelbacks, the Foxes were 18 for 5 after 20 balls.Sanderson, bowling his stint straight through, pinned Ben Cox lbw and had Liam Trevaskis caught behind to finish with his joint-best T20 figures. At 39 for 7, the Foxes were in a spot of bother.Van Beek and Scriven responded with an intelligent stand of 55 from 46 balls. Scriven hoisted Lloyd Pope to long on and Van Beek pulled George Scrimshire to long leg but those two, along with some late clubbing from Roman Walker at least gave their side a glimmer of a chance.Vasconcelos launched Steelbacks’ reply by flicking Van Beek over mid-wicket for six but edged the seventh ball of the innings, from Matt Salisbury, to slip. Van Beek delivered that T20 rarity, a maiden over, and added the scalp of Willey, brilliantly caught by wicketkeeper Cox.At 25 for 2, the door was ajar for the Foxes but Matt Breetzke and Bopara, with time on their side, added a pragmatic 50 in 50 balls. Breetzke and Saif Zaib, fell to successive balls from Walker but Bopara and George Bartlett (26) combined care with watchful aggression to see their side to the brink of victory with a partnership of 46 in 30 balls.

Eve Jones seals Lancashire dominance as Somerset falter on home soil

Kate Cross claims two key wickets, including Heather Knight, to set up seven-wicket victory

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay27-Apr-2025Lancashire produced a convincing display with bat and ball at Taunton’s Cooper Associates County Ground to beat Somerset by seven wickets and extend their winning start to the Metro Bank One Day Cup women’s competition.Inserted on a green-tinged pitch, Somerset slumped to 89 for 6 in the face of incisive bowling from Kate Cross and Hannah Jones, who returned figures of 2 for 27 and 2 for 23 respectively. Alex Griffiths top-scored with 46 and added 56 for the seventh wicket with Amanda-Jade Wellington to threaten a meaningful recovery, but Emma Lamb bowled well at the death to claim 2 for 30 and help restrict the home side to 205 for 9.Eve Jones and Lamb then confirmed Lancashire’s superiority in a match-winning opening stand of 151 in 28.1 overs to render the outcome a foregone conclusion. Jones posted an assured 97 from 11 balls with a six and 14 fours, while Lamb contributed 52 in an innings that spanned 68 deliveries and included a quartet of fours.Seren Smale and Fi Morris saw the job through as the red rose county reached their target with 13.1 overs in hand to register a second win in as many matches in the 50-over competition. For their part, Somerset were left to reflect ruefully upon their first home game of the professional era.Ellie Threlkeld won the toss, opted to field and watched from behind the stumps as her new-ball seamers made short work of Somerset’s much-vaunted top-order. Talismanic batters Heather Knight and Sophie Luff both fell in single figures and in identical fashion, pushing half forward to deliveries outside off stump from Cross and offering regulation catches behind. Undone by late movement, fellow England international Fran Wilson was bowled by Tara Norris as the home side slipped to 36 for 3 inside 14 overs, their most experienced batters already back in the pavilion.Having pulled Norris for six to get off the mark, Charlie Dean was bowled in the act of cutting by slow left armer Hannah Jones, who then pinned Katie Jones lbw in the crease, raising the number of batters to fall short of double figures to five. When the hitherto obdurate Emma Corney, who had chiseled 35 from 79 balls, pushed a delivery from Dani Collins to deep mid-off and set off for a risky single, she was brilliantly run out by Grace Potts, whose pick up and throw scored a direct hit, reducing Somerset to 89 for 6 in the 32nd over.Overseas all-rounder Wellington inspired a fightback, hoisting successive balls from Norris over the square leg boundary to put Lancashire on the back foot for the first time. She repeated the feat against Emma Lamb, her third six raising a hard-hitting half-century stand in 43 balls in partnership with Griffiths, who made 46 from 58 deliveries. Wellington holed out to deep mid-wicket off the bowling of Lamb for a 20-ball 26 and, when Griffiths was bowled by Collins soon afterwards, the red rose county were back in charge.Somerset’s lower order continued to fight hard and an unbroken alliance of 30 for the last wicket between Chloe Skelton (24 not out) and Laura Jackson (13 not out) pushed the score beyond 200 to at least give the home bowlers a chance.Lancashire openers Lamb and Eve Jones afforded the reply solid foundations, adding 50 from 73 deliveries to see off the new ball threat of Ellie Anderson and Jackson. Pinning their hopes on spin, Somerset soon turned to Dean and Wellington, only for Jones to hit the latter back over her head for six on her way to an imperious 73-ball half century.Lamb gave half chances to Dean at cover point off Wellington and Katie Jones behind the wicket off Skelton, but survived to see the hundred partnership come up, the second 50 having come at a run-a-ball. Introduced at the River end, Skelton’s off spin proved expensive as Jones and Lamb warmed to their task, advancing their partnership to 132 after 25 overs. Lamb moved to her 50 from 63 balls and the partnership passed the 150 mark as Somerset skipper Luff rotated her spinners without reward.Wellington eventually made the breakthrough, removing Lamb lbw, while Anderson had Jones held at short third man three runs short of her hundred as Somerset at least salvaged some pride. Dean removed Katie Mack, but it proved too little too late as the visitors cruised to victory.

Ashwani Kumar on his debut: 'Was feeling pressure, didn't have lunch'

The left-arm seamer became the first Indian to take a four-wicket haul on IPL debut

ESPNcricinfo staff31-Mar-2025Mumbai Indians (MI) left-arm seamer Ashwani Kumar made history by becoming the first Indian bowler to take a four-wicket haul on IPL debut, against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday.”I was feeling really good. There was a little pressure earlier, but thanks to the atmosphere of the team, I didn’t feel any pressure,” Ashwani, 23, told the host broadcaster at the break after KKR were dismissed for 116.Ashwani, who was bought for INR 30 lakh at the mega auction last year, said he had been nervous and skipped lunch before the evening game began at 7.30pm. “I didn’t have anything for lunch, I just had a banana. There was a little pressure. I wasn’t feeling hungry,” he said. “But still, I played well, so it’s good.”Related

He struck with his first delivery, having KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane caught at deep point. Rinku Singh was also caught at deep point in Ashwani’s second over, before Manish Pandey was bowled three balls later. In this third over, Ashwani bowled Andre Russell for 5 and finished with 4 for 24 in three overs. While the MI team management made game plans for Ashwani, their main instruction to him was to go out and enjoy his debut. “We had plans. But [Hardik Pandya, the MI captain] said that since it’s your debut match, enjoy yourself. Just keep bowling the way you have been,” Ashwani said. After being hit for a boundary by Russell first ball of his third over, Ashwani responded with two short balls before bowling a full one that the batter missed with an attacking shot. “Yes, the captain did have a role. Hardik had told me that he will try to attack you,” Ashwani said. “He told me to bowl into his body. But the situation was such that he tried to hit me and got out.”1:36

Aaron: ‘Skiddy’ Ashwani quicker than batters expected

With KKR all out in 16.2 overs, Ashwani didn’t complete his spell, but played a crucial role in putting MI on course to earn their first points of the season.Hardik said that Ashwani impressed in a practice game before the match, and showed a range of skills which led to him being picked for their first home game of the season.”For today’s game, it was simply, we played a practice game and he had that zip, he had that little late swing, something off the wicket and had a different action and plus, he was a lefty,” Hardik said at the post-match presentation ceremony. “We just thought that because of the options he has… the good death options, we just backed him.”First of all, the way he took that wicket of Russell, it was a very, very crucial wicket,” Hardik said, before also praising him for his leaping catch at mid-off to account for KKR opener Quinton de Kock. “I think that was terrific to see a fast bowler jumping that high.”

Safyaan Sharif: Getting Babar Azam or Mohammad Rizwan out would be a 'massive achievement'

Matt Roller06-Nov-2021Scotland’s players had to pinch themselves when their Super 12s fixture list was confirmed but for Safyaan Sharif, their final game against Pakistan in Sharjah on Sunday carries particular significance.Sharif, Scotland’s fastest bowler and their leading wicket-taker since the start of the Super 12s stage, was born in Huddersfield to a Pakistani father and a British-Pakistani mother before moving north of the border at the age of seven. He credits much of his development as a player to two winters training at National Gymkhana Cricket Club in Faisalabad as a teenager, shortly after leaving school, and is relishing the prospect of playing against a country with which he has close ties.Related

“I went when I was 18, firstly to train for six months,” he tells ESPNcricinfo. “I came back for the Scottish season and then went back again for another four or five months. My dad funded it for me and I have family back home, so it was easy accommodation-wise. It helped me a lot, to develop my skill and especially my mental toughness as well.”I trained at the same club as Saeed Ajmal. I didn’t know who he was at the time and I can still remember the first time I batted against him. I came forward to my first ball and he bowled me through the gate. Next ball, I came forward again – he bowled his doosra, and he bowled me again. I was just like, ‘bloody hell, who is this guy?'”It’s going to be exciting. I’ve got a Pakistani background and my family is Pakistani so it’s definitely one I’ve been looking forward to. You don’t get these opportunities all the time so we’ll be picking their brains after the game. I’d like to speak to Shaheen [Shah Afridi] and Haris Rauf, who are obviously world-class fast bowlers, and maybe Asif Ali – who is also from Faisalabad – about power-hitting.”The ability to rub shoulders with the world’s best players has been a huge benefit for Scotland – and Namibia, the other associate nation to reach the Super 12s – throughout this tournament, as evidenced by their interactions in the India dressing room after their defeat in Dubai on Friday night. Sharif, who has been carded at No. 9 in this World Cup but is a useful lower-order hitter, took the opportunity to seek out Hardik Pandya for some advice.”It was great to talk to him: he’s one of the best, hardest-hitting batters in the world. He was talking about the fact that guys know not to bowl full at him because he always sets himself to go big at the end, using the crease and going deep in it. He said that because he has those strengths – and teams know about it – he has to develop other strengths, so if guys bowl wide of him, he’ll practise those shots to have them in the bank.”It was good to learn from him tactically and about his mindset. We need to make the most of it. These guys are world-class players who have played in ICC events for so long. It’s a morale boost, talking to them and trying to learn what they do differently to us. It gives us things that we can take back home and work on.”Sharif’s personal highlight of the World Cup to date was his performance against New Zealand, taking two wickets in an over in Scotland’s tight defeat – including the big fish, Kane Williamson, whose scoring he stifled with a clever field returning a wide gully, preventing his trademark guide down to deep third.”Williamson is obviously a top-quality player but we knew that was his release shot,” he explains. “If you look to bowl on off stump, he’ll run you down to third man. We were like, ‘right, we need to stop that – especially when he comes in because he likes to take his time’. It wasn’t the best ball that got him [a leg-side strangle] but it managed to do the trick.”Ahead of their final game, he has his eyes on two more prized scalps. “It would be good to pick up either Babar Azam or Mohammad Rizwan. If you look through their order they’ve got class throughout – Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez are experienced players and Asif Ali is doing pretty well at the moment – but they’ve been the key to Pakistan’s success.”To get either of those two out would be a massive achievement: they don’t give their wickets away easily. If we can get the two openers out early, I think Pakistan will be under a bit of pressure because they’ve been scoring most of their runs in the tournament. Let’s see what happens tomorrow.”

£200,000-per-week Arsenal star in Saudi transfer talks with agreement close

One Arsenal high-earner is in talks over a lucrative move to the Middle East, and is believed to be closing in on a switch to the Saudi Pro League.

Players who could be sold by Arsenal this summer

Joining Mohamed Elneny and Cedric Soares, who are already confirmed to be leaving Hale End when their contracts expire at the end of this month, a host of Mikel Arteta's squad could follow them out the exit door.

Left-back Kieran Tierney was also on a temporary spell at Real Sociedad last campaign, where he managed 27 games in all competitions, but his regular game time in Spain wasn't enough to convince Arsenal to keep him.

Reports this week have claimed both Tierney and Oleksandr Zinchenko have been told to find new clubs, as Arteta swings the axe and looks to keep evolving his Arsenal squad ahead of another potential title challenge with Man City.

As well as the two left-backs, Gabriel Jesus, Fabio Vieira, Reiss Nelson, Emile Smith Rowe, Eddie Nketiah and Aaron Ramsdale have been named as Arsenal players who could be sold by Arteta this summer – as per various media reports from the last two months.

One of the most high-profile departures expected at Arsenal, though, is midfielder Thomas Partey. The Ghanaian has entered the final 12 months of his contract, with reliable journalists like Fabrizio Romano claiming Partey is set to leave in the next few months.

The £200,000-per-week midfielder has been a faithful servant since signing from Atletico Madrid for £45 million in 2020, but as the Arsenal squad keeps growing, there is no room for Partey – who also suffered from real injury problems last season.

Partey in talks and closing in on move to Saudi Arabia

As per Football Insider this week, there has been an important update on the 30-year-old's future. Indeed, it is now believed Partey is in Arsenal exit talks and closing in on a move to Saudi Arabia, via his representatives who are discussing terms.

The former La Liga star would pen a "huge" contract to swap the Premier League for the Gulf state, and FI's headline states Partey is close to agreeing the lucrative deal.

The north Londoners, if all goes to plan, will use the cash generated through Partey's sale to buy a younger central midfield replacement. Arsenal have apparently set an asking price of between £20-£25 million, which would be good business considering both the player's age and contract situation.

Newcastle make approach for "phenomenal" £30m titan who’s Gibbs-White 2.0

European football has become a need not a want in recent seasons for Newcastle United after the huge investment from the Saudi PIF.

A couple of years ago, playing in the Champions League would’ve been a far-fetched dream for the Magpies after years of off-the-field uncertainty, with the club even dropping into the Championship under the guidance of Mike Ashley.

Mike Ashley at Newcastle United.

However, the last couple of campaigns have been a rollercoaster for the players and supporters, achieving a feat that has been unheard of by an entire generation.

Trips away to Milan and Paris in the Champions League will live long in the memory of all Magpies supporters, but it has highlighted some key issues within Eddie Howe’s squad which need addressing this summer.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

The injuries suffered as a result of the congested fixture schedule have seen his side depleted in numerous key areas, including the midfield, which has seen the boss rely on youngsters Elliot Anderson and Lewis Miley for large spells in 2023/24.

However, the board are looking to combat this issue with new additions this summer, with one player catching the eye in recent weeks after his brilliant season in the Premier League.

Newcastle interested in Brazilian midfielder

According to Brazilian outlet Globo, Newcastle are interested in signing Fulham midfielder Andreas Pereira during the upcoming summer transfer window – with the Magpies one of the clubs to have made an approach after having 'sounded out' the player's agent, Kai Joorabchian.

Andreas Pereira scores for Fulham away to Manchester City.

The former Manchester United talent has reignited his Premier League career after joining the Cottagers for a fee in the region of £10m back in the summer of 2022.

During the 2023/24 campaign, he’s scored three and assisted seven in his 37 matches – missing just one game, demonstrating his ability to stay fit which could be a massive boost for Howe’s side.

The report from Globo goes on to state that fellow English top-flight sides Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in winning the race for the 28-year-old’s signature this window, but any deal will cost at least £30m.

Pereira isn’t the first and certainly won’t be the last midfielder to be linked with a move to Tyneside during the off-season, but he would prove to be a cheaper alternative to one of the club’s other targets.

How Pereira compares to Morgan Gibbs-White

In recent weeks, Newcastle have been credited with a strong interest in Nottingham Forest talent Morgan Gibbs-White after he achieved double figures in assists – leading the Reds to Premier League survival for the second consecutive season.

However, he would be an expensive deal for Howe’s side, costing them at least £50m, but he would be an excellent addition to the Magpies squad with his abilities potentially allowing the likes of Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon to bolster their goal-scoring tallies.

Despite his excellent form, Pereira could prove to be just as good of a signing, with his all-round game able to finally finish Howe’s hunt for a new talent to complete his midfield trio.

When comparing the duo – who have been noted as similar players by FBref – they have both started the same amount of games, with the Forest talent finishing with five more combined goals and assists in the 2023/24 Premier League campaign.

However, the “phenomenal” Brazilian, as dubbed by former boss José Mourinho, has completed more take-ons this season, whilst also having a greater impact at the end of his mazy runs.

Pereira has averaged more shots on target per 90 and more of his shots ending up on target than Gibbs-White, with his tally of 31% nearly more than double than that of the Englishman.

Although both players would cost the Magpies a pretty penny, they would both undoubtedly improve the Newcastle midfield, with the Fulham titan proving to be a slightly cheaper alternative.

Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton have nailed down two of the three midfield roles, with Howe potentially able to make it an all-Brazilian midfield with the addition of Pereira.

He’s been a shining light for Marco Silva’s side in 2023/24, more than deserving of a big move, with Newcastle needing to push a move to win the race for his signature this summer.

Man City may sell £300,000-a-week star for "big fee" with Pep not convinced

Manchester City are reportedly willing to sell one high-profile player for a "big fee" in the summer transfer window, with Pep Guardiola not convinced about him.

Man City transfer news

City's 2023/24 season ended up being a positive one because of yet another Premier League title triumph, but given the incredible standards they set last time around, only one trophy still felt like a slight disappointment, especially following Saturday's FA Cup final defeat to Manchester United.

It gives Guardiola reason to chase new signings this summer, with the Spaniard someone who chases perfection season in, season out, and plenty of players have been backed to move to the Etihad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.

Midfield could be an area to look at, particularly if Bernardo Silva brings an end to his time at City, and Inter Mila star Nicolo Barella has been linked with a move. The Italian is admired by both Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp, which speaks volumes, with the latter describing him as a "top-class" footballer.

Pedro Neto has matured into one of the best-attacking players outside of the big Premier League clubs, and he is another rumoured target for City. Newcastle City are believed to be looking to swoop, however, so there could be a battle to snap him up.

Pep willing to sell Man City star

On the flip side, the reigning league champions could lose players, and a new report from Football Insider claims that Manchester City could sell Jack Grealish this summer, as they look to receive a "big fee" for him.

It is claimed that Guardiola "is not completely convinced by the winger and he is considered dispensable as the club look to bring in some extra funds to continue improving their squad this summer."

bryan-gil-jack-grealish-tottenham-opinion

There is arguably plenty of sense in selling Grealish in the summer window, with the 28-year-old enduring an instantly forgettable season on a personal level. Injuries haven't helped him, but when he has been available, his performances haven't caught the eye in the slightest, with only three goals and one assist coming his way in 20 Premier League appearances.

The £300,000-a-week England international no longer feels like a key man, especially with Jeremy Doku coming in and looking more of a threat on the left wing, and considering Grealish turns 30 next year, this summer could be the best time to cash in on him.

In fairness to Grealish, he has spent much of his time playing a more disciplined role than at Aston Villa, where he was far more of a maverick, but it's hard to shake the idea that he has rarely looked like a £100m player during his time at City, never coming close to having the same impact as the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden, Rodri and Bernardo, to name just a few.

Fabrizio Romano: £100,000-a-week Man City star may leave with Saudi clubs keen

For that reason, losing him may not feel like a big blow, so Guardiola and those high up at the club should be listening to offers for him in the coming months.
