    WHAT HAPPENED?

The former Tottenham Hotspur keeper signed a one-year deal worth $350,000 (£276,000), a fraction of what Lloris was earning in the Premier League and lower than a vast number of MLS goalkeepers.

After turning down a move to Saudi Arabia that would have trebled his previous earnings, the World Cup winner seems content with his decision, viewing the move as an opportunity to begin a new chapter with his family on the Pacific coast.

    WHAT HUGO LLORIS SAID

“I have now arrived at a point in my career where I feel free to decide my next project and destination, and I liked everything about MLS,” Lloris told . “They have a budget for the goalkeeper spot that they couldn’t go over because the rules are different, so there was not even a question about salary. It shows how much I wanted to come!

“I don’t have the national team anymore because I retired a year ago, so this was a chance to discover a new continent with my family. California is an amazing place."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

After 11 seasons as Spurs' undisputed number one, Lloris' time in north London came to an ignominious end when he lost his place in the side late last season. He never featured in the plans of new boss Ange Postecoglou, who has placed his trust in summer arrival Guglielmo Vicario.

Lloris continued to train with team-mates despite having no chance of selection but matters were finally resolved in December when the Frenchman made his move to Los Angeles on a free transfer.

Rangers target Doekhi tipped for exit

Reported Rangers target Danilho Doekhi has been tipped to leave Vitesse this summer and given his performances in recent seasons, Steven Gerrard’s side should certainly be looking to bring him to Ibrox.

What’s the word?

Rangers have regularly been linked with a move for the Vitesse centre-back this summer, and it now seems as if he could well leave the Eredivisie side ahead of next season, with the club’s technical director, Johannes Spors, suggesting that they are being realistic about his future at the GelreDome this summer.

He said:

“We would like to keep Doekhi, but we also have to be realistic.

“If a top club can and want to meet his asking price, then it can be interesting.

“We don’t want Doekhi to go, but we also understand that we develop [players] at Vitesse.”

Should Rangers sign Doekhi?

Although defence is arguably where Rangers are strongest, considering they conceded just 13 goals in the Premiership last season, they would be missing out on a top-quality young centre-back in Doekhi if they fail to bring him in this summer.

The 23-year-old was a key part of the Vitesse defence who conceded just 38 goals in the Eredivise last season, as they secured a fourth-place finish in the Dutch top-flight.

Doekhi would make 32 appearances in the league, contributing one goal and one assist, averaging a solid 6.86 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

Whilst he might struggle to break up a partnership of Filip Helander and Connor Goldson in Gerrard’s side next season, Leon Balogun is now 33 so they may need a long-term replacement for him, and Doekhi looks to be a brighter prospect than both George Edmundson and Jack Simpson given the experience he boasts.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-rangers-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Rangers transfer rumours and news!”]

Doekhi’s manager, Thomas Letsch, was full of praise for him last season, saying:

“He already played fantastic last year and this season he has performed at the highest level in every game. Danilho makes almost no mistakes and is an absolute team player, a very calm player.”

“He coaches other players very well. He is calmer than other players and perhaps that makes him less noticeable, but he is the reserve captain for a reason.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776″]

Therefore, Doekhi sounds as if he would be a superb option for Gerrard’s side next season and given the boost that the Gers have had with Spors admitting that he could leave Vitesse this summer, sporting director Ross Wilson should ensure that he ends up at Ibrox, as he looks to have a lot of potential.

Just three days before the MLS season begins, and two weeks after Inter Miami's friendly against Hong Kong team, the Argentine went on the record in an attempt to clear his name. He shared details surrounding his injury, while also denouncing false narratives surrounding his and the Herons' decision not to field him in the match.

    WHAT MESSI SAID

In a statement released on video via Chinese social media website Weibo: “I’ve read and heard a lot of things about what happened after the match in Hong Kong.

“That’s why I wanted to make this video to give the real explanation and avoid reading false reports. “As everyone knows, I always want to play. I want to play in every match. I heard that I didn’t want to play because of politics and many other things that have nothing to do with this. If that were the case I wouldn’t have traveled to Japan or to China like I have so many times in my career.

“I’ve always had a very close relationship with China. I’ve done so many things with China like interviews, (friendly) matches, events and games with Barcelona and the Argentina national team. Like I said during the press conference that I gave: I had inflammation in my adductor and I couldn’t play. I felt it in the first game that I played in Saudi Arabia and I tried to play in the second game (in Saudi) but it felt worse.

“I tried the day before to take part in that training session to be there for all those people. I did what I could and I took part in the clinic with all those kids, but I honestly couldn’t play because I felt discomfort.

“After a few days had passed I felt a little better and that’s why I played a bit in the friendly in Japan in order to continue improving physically and continue to prepare for what’s coming next for me. I had to play to get some rhythm back.

“I’ve already said this but I felt it was important to repeat it after everything that has been said. I want to send my love to the people of China, a (feeling) I’ve always had with them. I hope we can see each other again soon.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

After Messi skipped out on the friendly against Hong Kong team, a match that the Herons won 4-0, chaos followed. The Chinese Government cancelled Argentina friendlies in their country this March against Nigeria and the Ivory Coast, with them not being happy with the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner's decision.

Fans who attended dubbed it a 'slap in the face' with one government official even saying he should 'never be allowed back' in the country.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Dutch international Sneijder felt it was "unfair" he did not get the individual accolade in 2010 after helping Mourinho's Inter win the Champions League, Coppa Italia and Serie A. Despite Messi just winning La Liga and seeing his Argentina side lose in the World Cup quarter-finals that year, whereas the Netherlands were runners-up to Spain, the former Roma manager has come to the aid of the Inter Miami ace.

    WHAT JOSE MOURINHO SAID

On Rio Ferdinand’s podcast, the Portuguese said: "I don’t like to say it robbed. Who won it? Messi? So, not robbed. But Wesley did the treble, the Champions League winner, I think the World Cup final in the same season. So Wesley should be there at least in the top 3, but when in the last generation, when Cristiano [Ronaldo], Messi, they win the Ballon d’Or, it’s never robbed."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

While some of Messi's Ballon d'Or wins have been questioned, particularly the 2023 award after he scored fewer goals than Paris Saint-Germain's Kylian Mbappe and Manchester City's Erling Haaland and played in a weaker league in the MLS, the 36-year-old will go down as one of the greatest players ever. That undoubtedly means more than any individual accolades.

Erling Haaland is The Terminator but have Manchester City made a massive mistake letting Cole Palmer join Chelsea?! Winners and losers from a crazy draw at Stamford Bridge

Many felt that the Blues had overpaid for the 21-year-old attacker but he stole the show at Stamford Bridge on Sunday

"I'm tired," Mauricio Pochettino said in his post-match press conference. And who could blame him? With Monday's emotionally-draining Tottenham victory still fresh in the memory, the Argentine was subjected to another tortuous 90-plus minutes against Manchester City on Sunday.

However, thanks to Cole Palmer, at least the Blues came away with a 4-4 draw and a point to show for their efforts. The former City man netted from the penalty spot in second-half stoppage time to cap off another crazy game of Premier League football, after Ruben Dias had chopped down Armando Broja in the area.

Before that, this one had pretty much everything. As you might expect in a game with eight goals, Erling Haaland found himself on the scoresheet twice, though not without controversy, and Palmer was not the only ex-City man that proved a point against his former employers.

England boss Gareth Southgate would have watched on with particular interest too, with Raheem Sterling making another strong case for his return to the national team. But, in the end, this one was all about Palmer – a young man proving that not all of Chelsea's summer signings are doomed to failure.

Below, GOAL runs down all the winners and losers from Stamford Bridge…

  • Getty

    WINNER: Erling Haaland

Haaland has scored two or more goals on 36 occasions since joining Borussia Dortmund in 2020 – more than any other player across Europe's 'Big Five' leagues. Obviously! The man is a goalscoring machine, operating in a league of his own. It really is as simple as that. Like the Terminator, there is just no stopping him – no matter how little the Norwegian is involved in his team’s build-up play. However, while Haaland is sometimes criticised for his lack of touches, particularly since arriving at Manchester City, he was excellent at Stamford Bridge in every sense.

His hold-up play was fantastic – he was heavily involved in the move that led to City’s fourth goal – and he never gave Thiago Silva & Co. a moment’s piece. On days such as these, he really does look like a cheat code. City didn’t play particularly well at all yet they still managed to claim a point almost exclusively because of the phenomenal No.9.

    LOSER: Manchester City's defence

When Pep Guardiola claimed that Manchester City were "in trouble” following an injury to John Stones, many people scoffed. After all, the Catalan is in possession of one of the most expensively assembled squads in football history. The man is renowned for stockpiling £50 million defenders – and only this past summer he signed a centre-back, Josko Gvardiol, for nearly twice that figure.

However, Stones was undeniably conspicuous by his absence at Stamford Bridge, with his defensive excellence and composure on the ball in midfield sorely missed by a team that looked unusually ragged. The aforementioned Gvardiol continues to flatter to deceive but the real story was City being let down by some of their most reliable players, namely Ederson and Ruben Dias.

The former was at fault for Nicolas Jackson’s goal, while the latter was atrocious throughout, with his miserable evening capped by a terrible challenge on Armando Broja that allowed Palmer to level the game from the penalty spot. Maybe Guardiola was right. Maybe the treble-winners really are in trouble…

  • Getty Images

    WINNER: Cole Palmer

Of all the signings Chelsea have made in the Todd Boehly era so far, few have generated as muted a reaction as when Palmer arrived from Manchester City in a £42.5m ($51.9m) deal. Dismissed as an overpay at the time, the silky forward is making his critics eat their words lately – and Sunday was his best display yet.

Palmer clearly wanted to prove a point to his former club. His energy never dipped and he was involved in many of Chelsea’s best moves, linking up sublimely with Reece James down the right-hand side in particular. Midway through the second half, it appeared he’d created his crowning moment, jinking past a host of sky-blue shirts and into the box. However, off balance, he scuffed a tame effort at Ederson.

Thankfully, Dias was on hand to ensure his ex-team-mate went home happy. His foul gifted Chelsea a penalty at the death and despite a lengthy delay, Palmer kept his nerve, stepping up to smash home and earn his side a point. This young team desperately needs leaders – and Palmer can be exactly that. City might have made a massive mistake in not fighting harder to keep him around in the summer.

    LOSER: Levi Colwill

Colwill has not had the best week on a personal level. After putting in one of his shakiest displays in a Chelsea shirt against Tottenham on Monday – which resulted in him being dragged off at half time – he was absent from the squad entirely against City. The talented young defender suffered a minor shoulder injury in the lead up to the game and was not risked this weekend.

Colwill was milling around the press area with fellow absentee Wesley Fofana before the match and seemed in decent-enough spirits – particularly when he got to spend some time with rap superstar and Chelsea fan Jack Harlow. However, the knock comes at a less-than-ideal moment.

He was once again called up by England boss Gareth Southgate for next week’s Euro 2024 qualifiers against North Macedonia and Malta and although there is little to play for – with the Three Lions progression already secured – the warning Southgate issued to clubmate Reece James will be ringing in Colwill’s ears this evening. It’s not long until the action gets going in Germany and every single player will be laser-focussed on impressing Southgate. Colwill seems to have been deprived of that opportunity this month.

'It will take time' – Gregg Berhalter on conversations with Gio Reyna and where the Borussia Dortmund star fits with the USMNT

The midfielder is back with the U.S, albeit in a limited capacity, and all eyes are on how he rebuilds his relationship with the returning head coach.

It was the one name everyone was looking for in the United States men's national team squad. At 11 a.m. on the East coast, U.S. Soccer unveiled the list of 23 players called in for the upcoming matches against Germany and Ghana but, fairly or unfairly, all eyes will be on one of those players and the coach he will once again be playing under.

Gregg Berhalter's roster is out, Gio Reyna is on it, and, now, finally, all of these months later, all involved can begin to heal.

It's been the U.S. men's national team story of 2023. It's a familiar one now: post-World Cup drama, betrayal, investigations, friendships ruined, a federation plunged into chaos. And yet, somehow, it's brought everyone right back to where they started: with Berhalter in charge of the USMNT and with Reyna as a key young star that the program is hoping will soon become a key young superstar.

Still, too much has changed for things to stay the same, right? This camp, for all involved, will surely be a bit awkward on some level. You can't fix all of it in one reunion.

This is the start, though. Reyna is back. Berhalter is, too. And, as this camp begins, Berhalter says that both seem ready to treat this as the fresh start it could be.

  • Getty Images

    Finally aligning

From the moment Berhalter was rehired this summer, everyone wanted to know the answer. How would he begin to fix all that was broken with Reyna? The answer to that question would probably define his tenure.

It took a while, but that process began recently. As of September camp, Berhalter and Reyna had not yet had their long-awaited sitdown, as Reyna remained out of action due to an injury suffered this summer. However, ahead of October camp, that conversation needed to happen if Reyna was to return to the team.

Berhalter says the two finally met on Zoom a few weeks back. The conversation, Berhalter says, went about as well as anyone could have hoped, even if Berhalter wasn't too willing to get into specifics.

"The conversation was a positive conversation," Berhalter said. "I'm appreciative of him taking time and being able to connect. Really for us, it's about aligning on how we're moving forward, and I think we did that. The exact contents of the conversation I'm gonna leave private, but we're in a good spot to prepare for this camp."

  • Getty Images

    'It will take time'

Conversations are good. Time together in camp will be even better. However, Berhalter knows that there's no fixing everything, especially not this quickly.

What happened between the Berhalters and the Reynas was deeper than soccer. The two families, for years, were the best of friends. Berhalter's relationship with Reyna's father, USMNT legend Claudio, made him something of a family member. Berhalter watched Reyna grow up, and then he watched it all fall apart.

Berhalter's relationship with Claudio and Danielle Reyna may never be repaired, but his relationship with Gio will have to be. The two have to come together for the sake of the USMNT and figure out some way, any way, to make it work.

The initial signs have been good, but Berhalter admitted that it won't all be washed away in this camp.

"The conversation was positive," he said. "I was really, really just appreciative of the conversation and, having said that, acknowledging that, I think it will take time. There's a difference between a Zoom call and being in person, but I think that both intentions are positive.

"The idea is that, we work together for the team to be successful and I think we're both prepared to do that. I think that, although it may take some time, we're both aligned with what we want to accomplish."

  • Getty

    Building him up

With that off-field stuff out of the way, Berhalter also explained his expectations for Reyna this camp.

The Borussia Dortmund midfielder hasn't played a minute since June's Nations League triumph and only recently returned to the bench on the club level. He has yet to come off the bench, though, as Edin Terzic has yet to use him in the Bundesliga or Champions League.

Last camp, Berhalter made a point to ease Folarin Balogun into the team, as the striker joined up with the U.S. after only recently completing a move to Monaco from Arsenal. This time around, Berhalter says he envisions a similar set up with Reyna, who probably won't play 90 minutes in either of the two games.

"Really, in my opinion, we're treating this very similarly to how we did with with Balo last camp: build him up, build his minutes up so that he goes back to Dortmund in a better place. We'll be using him on the field in a way that he can return to Dortmund ready to go. That's going to be important for this camp."

He continued: "How many minutes can we give him on the field that he can build up in a safe way and then go back to Dortmund and really propel him to make a big impact for his club? We're going to be creative with the minutes. We want to certainly get him on the field and work through both the Germany game and see what position he plays and then, in the Ghana game, same thing: seeing how we can get him in different positions throughout the camp on the field."

    Three positions

For much of last cycle, Reyna was used as a winger by Berhalter. With Christian Pulisic generally on that left wing, though, and Tim Weah on the right, Reyna was squeezed out of the USMNT starting XI at the World Cup.

This summer, though, Reyna was deployed as an attacking midfielder with fantastic results. His assist on Folarin Balogun's first goal showed what he can bring to the role and, in the months since, the debate has raged on about how Berhalter can best use Reyna in this cycle.

For now, that answer is TBD. We likely won't get a concrete answer this camp as Reyna is on that minutes restriction, but Berhalter isn't ruling out anything going forward.

"In terms of Gio, we see him being able to play three positions: central midfielder, attacking midfielder and winger," he said. "We use wingers in different ways. Sometimes the wingers are wide against the line and sometimes they're in between the lines. We see him as more of an in-between-the-lines winger, so those are the three positions he can be utilized in."

Leicester City linked with Jonathan Tah

Leicester City have been linked with a move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

What’s the story?

According to German outlet SportBILD (as reported by Leicestershire Live), the Foxes are interested in acquiring the 25-year-old’s services this summer as Brendan Rodgers looks to bolster his first team squad.

The report claims that Leverkusen would be prepared to let Tah leave if they’re successful in their pursuit of Mainz defender Jeremiah St Juste.

Rodgers needs him

Leicester are expected to be in the market for a centre-back, with club captain Wes Morgan announcing his retirement after a stellar career and Premier League-winning defender Christian Fuchs departing following a five-year stint at the King Power Stadium.

While the likes of Caglar Soyuncu, Jonny Evans and Wesley Fofana all performed admirably throughout the recently concluded campaign, all three suffered prolonged injures at some point, forcing Rodgers to play people out of position in order to plug the gaps.

With the Midlands outfit securing European football for next term, reinforcements will be required if they are to stand a chance of fighting on multiple fronts.

Therefore, a move for the 1.95m (6 ft 5) Germany colossus makes perfect sense for the current FA Cup holders this summer. Once described by former teammate Christoph Kramer as a “battleship”, Tah has been one of the Bundesliga’s best performers in recent seasons.

The Germany international made 27 top-flight appearances for Leverkusen last term, achieving a respectable 6.75 WhoScored rating in the process, and it seems as though the time has come to take the next step in his career.

If Leicester are to continue their development under Rodgers, then director of football Jon Rudkin must back the manager over the imminent transfer window.

While their rivals at the upper echelons of the Premier League table may be more affluent, the Foxes have managed to punch above their weight through a series of astute purchases, and bringing in Tah to replace Morgan would go down as another cunning move from the recruitment team.

In other news…Imagine him and Maddison: Rudkin must sanction Leicester swoop for £34m magician
