Tottenham Hotspur have been heading in a new direction since this summer’s major overhaul both on and off the pitch.

Although they may well not see the fruits of their labour in the near future as a lot of their moves have been with the long-term in mind.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy appointed a sporting director for the first time in over six years, hiring the trophy-laden Fabio Paratici from Juventus, who then opted for Nuno Santo as the club’s next manager.

And his work in the transfer market has been pretty impressive thus far, especially considering it has been his first and only opportunity to do business.

The Italian supremo has managed to offload some of the deadwood that had been holding the Lilywhites back, seeing players like Erik Lamela, Moussa Sissoko and Serge Aurier finally move on.

In the opposite direction, the vast majority of Spurs’ signings have been 23 years old or under, particularly the additions of Bryan Gil and Pape Matar Sarr.

The latter is a perfect case in point on why we will not see the rewards anytime soon as he’s currently on loan to Metz, where he signed from in a £14.6m deal this summer.

Aged just 19, the young midfielder is a hugely talented prospect that has been tipped for big things and for the time being, he’s getting valuable minutes at a top European league.

By the end of the season, you’d hope that he could come straight into Nuno’s squad and perhaps take the place of some of the remaining deadwood, such as Harry Winks, who Spurs were reportedly keen to offload before deadline day.

The Senegalese teenager, who came through the same system as Watford’s Ismaila Sarr, has been likened to two elite stars, both past and present.

Metz director Olivier Perrin once compared him to former Juventus and Barcelona maestro Miralem Pjanic.

“I immediately knew that Sarr was going to be a top player, with a very high level when it comes to reading and analysing the game. He is like Miralem Pjanic,” he told Senego.

Whilst his free-kick ability has earned him the nickname ‘Carlos’ after Brazilian great Roberto Carlos.

He has also been likened to Manchester United’s Paul Pogba by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

“I am told this guy is really more than an interesting talent. He has real potential, [he’s a] fantastic talent,” he told his YouTube channel. “One of my sources told me he could become one style of [Paul] Pogba player. He has style, he has potential, he has skills, so we will see what happens with this guy.”

Sarr is known for his aggressive ball-playing technique and is capable of picking up possession in his own half and driving forward to help contribute further up the pitch, perhaps something that is severely lacking in the current Spurs squad.

Across the last two seasons, the young £9m-rated dynamo has averaged 1.9 dribbles and 1.1 key passes every 90 minutes, via WhoScored, which would certainly reinforce the reputation he’s received during his time in France.

Someone like Winks must be very careful this season because if Sarr continues to impress at Metz, he could well walk straight into Nuno’s squad come next summer.

Then Narsingh Deonarine and Royston Crandon revived hopes of a fightback with a 124-run stand; Crandon scored at nearly a run a ball in his a career-high 67 but was caught at deep cover off Ryan Austin. Autor da jogada para o gol de barriga de Renato Gaúcho no título carioca de 1995, contra o Flamengo, Ailton Ferraz, hoje técnico do Tupi de Juiz de Fora, não esquece a forte identificação com o tricolor. Adepto do jogo bem jogado, Ailton Ferraz tem acompanhado de perto o desempenho do Flu na temporada e elogia o trabalho feito até aqui pelo seu companheiro de profissão, Abel Braga.

– O Fluminense do Abel Braga é um time muito bem ajustado. Muito bem organizado taticamente. Mesmo não tendo um investimento tão alto, o Abel conseguiu encontrar um esquema certo para os jogadores que tem. Dá gosto de ver a equipe do Fluminense. É rápida e com muita velocidade do meio pra frente. Além da qualidade, o Abel conseguiu colocar no grupo um espirito de luta muito grande.

Comandando o Tupi na Série C do Brasileiro, mesmo tendo um dos menores investimentos entre os times que disputam a competição, Ailton vem conseguindo bons resultados. Entre os quatro primeiros colocados do grupo B da série C, o Galo Carijó tem surpreendido pela maneira que tem jogado e pelo comprometimento dos jogadores durante as partidas.

– A gente sabe da dificuldade do clube, mas estamos focados somente no trabalho e em fazer tudo dar certo. Nós, da comissão técnica, e também o grupo de jogadores estamos entendendo que se quisermos alcançar os objetivos, precisamos nos sacrificar. Só o trabalho árduo nos fará superar as dificuldades. O grupo tá entendendo nossa proposta de trabalho e é um grupo muito unido. Isso faz muita diferença.

Mostrando variações de esquemas durante o torneio e se adaptando ao estilo de jogo do adversário, o Tupi, do técnico Ailton Ferraz, vem tendo, além de bons resultados, boas atuações. Até aqui, em 8 jogos, são três vitórias, três empates e apenas duas derrotas. O galo carijó está a apenas um ponto do líder do Grupo B, Botafogo-SP.

– Eu tenho esse hábito de treinar vários sistemas táticos no dia a dia, então, quando a gente tem que mudar para uma partida pontual, os atletas já estão adaptados e isso facilita muito o entendimento deles numa nova variação. Na intertemporada treinei bastante essas variações. É importante para que possamos surpreender o adversário e também nos adaptar aquilo que o adversário faz. Tem dado certo até aqui e vamos seguir o trabalho desta maneira. Os jogadores compraram nosso trabalho. Por isso conseguimos bons resultados nesse inicio de série C.

O Tupi, do técnico Ailton Ferraz, volta a campo neste sábado, 8, para enfrentar o Bragantino, as 16h, no Nabi Abi Chedid, em Bragança Paulista.

Southampton have built up an impressive reputation for bringing through academy products and making them a success in the game.

The likes of Luke Shaw, Theo Walcott, Alan Shearer, Matt Le Tissier, Adam Lallana and Gareth Bale all came through the Saints academy, along with current first-team captain James Ward-Prowse.

Some academy players showed signs of promise at Southampton before moving on to other clubs, however, with Fulham defensive midfielder Harrison Reed being one of them.

Reed came through the youth set-up at Southampton and made his debut as a teenager in the 2013/14 campaign, going on to make 30 first-team appearances for the club. After making just three Premier League outings in the 2016/17 season, he was sent out on loan to Norwich, Blackburn and Fulham in consecutive seasons.

At the end of his loan spell with Fulham, upon which he achieved promotion to the top-flight, the Cottagers signed him on a permanent deal from the Saints. At the time of the sale, Transfermarkt valued Reed at just £2.16m.

However, since signing for The Cottagers on a permanent deal, his value has soared exponentially. After 31 appearances in the Premier League last term and three in the Championship this season, Reed is currently valued at a whopping £9m. This is a 317% increase from the time of his Southampton departure.

He is now valued at a higher price than Oriol Romeu and Stuart Armstrong in terms of current Southampton midfielders, as well as Will Smallbone, but falling just behind Ibrahima Diallo’s £13.5m and James Ward-Prowse’s £27m.

This suggests that it was a disaster of a decision from Martin Semmens to cash in on Reed when he did. The defensive midfielder’s price is rising and Southampton may have been better off keeping him around.

Romeu turns 30 this week, which suggests that the time could be coming for a natural successor to take his place as the anchor of Southampton’s midfield and Reed could have been that player.

Reed was not given a chance to show what he could do in a competitive environment under Ralph Hasenhuttl and is now showcasing his quality and value for Fulham week-in-week-out. It will be interesting to see whether or not any other Premier League clubs decide to take a gamble on him if the second-tier side fails to get back up to the top-flight this season.

– Temos de exaltar o que a equipe fez de bom. Vendo a entrega, tenho de acreditar cada vez mais que o caminho da recuperação está aberto. Espero que resultados aconteçam com essa entrega, que é o que o torcedor quer ver. Resultado positivo é fundamental, mas comportamento mostra outro caminho. Se tivéssemos ganhado sem essa vivacidade, teria uma preocupação muito maior do que tenho hoje.

A partida desta quinta-feira foi a oitava consecutiva sem vitória do Tricolor, que não ganha desde que aplicou 2 a 0 sobre o Vitória, em 8 de junho, com Rogério Ceni como técnico. Mas a equipe subiu duas posições com o ponto somado nesta noite, atingido o 17º lugar, e está a três pontos da saída da faixa da degola. Algo que será atingido, segundo Dorival, pelo espírito do time.

– Temos de nos voltar para a entrega da equipe, que foi importante. Essa mudança de comportamento nos mostra um novo caminho. Tivemos posse, mas poucas penetrações no primeiro tempo. No segundo tempo, melhoramos, conseguimos as vantagens, mas não as sustentamos, e isso complicou. Pelo esforço que conseguimos os gols, demos a possibilidade ao adversário de alcançar a recuperação.

Atuação dentro da normalidade. Tudo é questão de tempo. O gol saiu por opção errada (de Cueva), mas tivemos a participação dos dois no primeiro gol.Aos poucos, vamos novamente resgatar confiança. Quando resgatarmos, as coisas se desenvolverão de outra forma.

Cueva e Wellington Nem têm recuperação?
Se eles continuarem reagindo, como fizeram em campo, vão se recuperar, também, perante ao torcedor. Vamos ter mais calma. Daqui a pouco, teremos outro caminho. Sei que é um momento difícil, justificar um oitavo resultado negativo, isso complica a sequência, mas vi coisas boas. E prefiro ficar com essas coisas boas e motivar a valorizar para buscar o resultado.

Emocional do time
Há uma ansiedade natural para fazer e defender, o que vem acontecendo há algumas rodadas. Você faz o gol e precisa se preparar para um segundo momento. É um momento complicado, natural que gere insegurança, jogadores não constroem com naturalidade. Mesmo se defendendo, você proporciona espaços aos adversários. Nas poucas oportunidades, o Atlético foi feliz e teve competência para nos tirar pontos importantes.

Crise
Com sequência negativa, é natural ter insegurança. Precisamos saber como conviver nesse momento. A gana que a equipe mostrou, se repetida, sem dúvidas será o primeiro passo para recuperação. Espero que não seja só um cartão de visitas. Com esse espírito, fatalmente conseguiremos outra condição no campeonato.

Não vencer o lanterna
O Atlético-GO vem crescendo e melhorando muito no campeonato. Sabíamos que teríamos muitas dificuldades. Volto a dizer que a vontade que vimos em campo nos dá um novo caminho. Acredito cada dia mais que o rendimento será um pouco mais seguro quando tivermos mais confiança. Seria muito bom que o resultado acontecesse já, mas acredito, pela postura, na possibilidade real de recuperação. Se tivéssemos ganhado sem essa vivacidade, teria uma preocupação muito maior do que tenho hoje.

Sem tempo para treinar
Tenho consciência dessa sequência desde antes de acertar. Isso dificulta um pouco mais, mas não posso, de maneira nenhuma, creditar qualquer resultado ao pouco tempo de treinamento. Vamos tentar aproveitar o máximo e é natural que vamos precisar recuperar mais do que trabalhar, mas vamos aproveitar os poucos momentos que teremos para melhorar. Mas já mostramos alguma coisa. esse resgate de briga e valorização é um ponto altamente possível. Pela entrega que tivemos e a postura do torcedor, nós e o torcedor, mais do que ninguém, merecia esse resultado.

Melhora
Precisamos tentar administrar a nossa ansiedade. Talvez, hoje, tenhamos tido uma ansiedade menor pelo que ouvi no vestiário. É um fator que anima e coloca outro caminho. Resultado não aconteceu, mas, pela maneira que a equipe se entregou, já é outra situação. Caso isso se repita, acontecerá de forma mais natural. Talvez as vaias virem aplausos, e todo jogador quer retribuir toda a festa que foi feita, mas entendendo que torcedor teve seu direito porque veio em grande número e não saiu com alegria completa pela falta de resultado.

Insistência em cruzar
É questão de tempo e adaptação. Vi um lado positivo, que foram as aproximações para triangular, que não aconteceram por ansiedade ou não atacamos no momento certo para isso. Isso será corrigido com treinamento. Nossa equipe tem finalizadores, velocistas e jogadores de habilidade para trabalhar a bola. Vamos melhorar pouco a pouco. Mesmo sem tempo, queremos trabalhar para ter mais do que essa bola cruzada na área.

Ele atuava pela direita na sua outra equipe, mas teve liberdade aqui para sair da esquerda e tabelar. Os jogadores deram resposta com poucas coisas pontuadas. Tentaram executar e, pelas dificuldades do adversário, não tiveram tantas coisas boas. Mas, quando equipe está interessada e preocupada, as coisas acontecem.

Time recém-reformulado
É um fato real e temos de conviver. Temos jogadores que chegaram há 15, 20 ou 30 dias. É um momento de adaptação para alguns até no país. Precisamos ter calma e fazer correções no que vimos nos jogos anteriores e nesta, agora, ao vivo. É questão de tempo. É um trabalho diferente do Santos, onde encontrei jogadores que se conheciam muito bem. Agora, está em montagem em um campeonato difícil como no Brasileiro. Queremos minimizar os problemas.

Aproveitar a base
Quero dar uma cara para o time, mexer o mínimo possível e, depois, abrir o leque para dar chance à base. Gosto muito disso, mas o São Paulo precisa sair desse momento turbulento para abrir condição para eles.

This doesn’t look like the worst of Tests to miss for a bowler, which could provide some solace for Steve Harmison. His omission surprised many, but the disappointment he felt may have eased as he watched Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook carve West Indies to all corners in the most benign of conditions. Cruising is a popular way to reach Barbados and the openers did just that for two sessions.This was England’s first double-century opening stand since Strauss and Marcus Trescothick added 273 at Durban in 2004, but runs alone aren’t going to be enough. They are the side that needs to win and all the talk has been about whether they can take 20 wickets. That is going to require hard toil from the four main bowlers whenever England have finished filling their boots.Opening batsmen have to deal with their fair share of hostile conditions where the ball is swinging and seaming, only to then watch when the middle order takes the glory. Today was their chance. Opening partnerships can do so much to set the tone of an innings and a match. When England found themselves 1-0 in the 2005 Ashes, Strauss and Trescothick came out all-guns blazing at Edgbaston, adding 112 before lunch to show Australia they wouldn’t be backed into a corner. As Duncan Fletcher said in his recent column, the team were able to play that way because, despite defeat at Lord’s, they had the confidence gained from prolonged success.It is no coincidence that England’s decline in fortunes since 2005 can be traced to the loss of Trescothick. Injury to Andrew Flintoff and Simon Jones, coupled with Harmison’s loss of form, have all been crucial, but the impact of losing Trescothick was immense. He gave the side impetus, but also had the ability to build Test centuries while allowing his partner – often it was Strauss – to play second fiddle.When Trescothick pulled out of the 2006-07 Ashes, Strauss tried to reinvent himself as the dasher, but two errant pull shots in Brisbane showed it was a game plan that didn’t suit. “I tried to do that against Australia in the Ashes and it didn’t go very well for me,” he said. “I think it’s more a case of assessing the wicket and assessing the bowlers then deciding the odds are in my favour. The more experienced you become as a batsman the better you are at judging that.”He perhaps felt forced into the new role by Cook’s style of play which didn’t (and still doesn’t) lend itself to quick scoring. It is why there has been a concern that the current pair are too similar to be an ideal opening combination. But new relationships need time to flourish and the captain and vice-captain are beginning to gel. The 229-run stand was their sixth hundred-plus effort since they were reunited at the beginning of the home series against New Zealand last year.What has marked the two most recent performances, here and in Antigua, has been the newest evolution of Strauss’s play. He showed at the ARG an aggression that hadn’t been seen since 2005, while at the same time remaining compact and using the shots he feels comfortable with. The Athletic’s Phil Hay has confirmed that Leeds United midfielder Adam Forshaw has suffered a major injury setback.

What’s the story?

The midfielder only recently returned to first-team action for Marcelo Bielsa’s side following a considerable period of time out injured, and Hay has now revealed that he is set for another spell on the side-lines.

He said: “Raphinha indicated during the game that he needed to come off. Forshaw not in the squad today – he’s torn a leg muscle, Bielsa says. Probably looking at a month out but no real timeframe yet. #lufc”

Leeds fans will be fuming

While Leeds fans will no doubt be sympathetic to Forshaw’s wretched luck with injuries, what they surely won’t be happy about is the fact the club didn’t spend a penny on a new central midfielder in the summer transfer window.

Reports linked them with a move for Huddersfield Town’s Lewis O’Brien but their haggling over a transfer fee meant that the Whites pulled out before transfer deadline day.

That decision not to spend on a new midfielder and retain their faith in Bielsa’s current options seems to have back-fired massively, with the Whites now currently lying in the bottom three of the Premier League table.

Writing for The Athletic earlier this summer, Hay actually backed Forshaw to enjoy a redemption season this year, saying: “Can his body hold up? Could he adapt quickly to the pace of the Premier League? The thing about Forshaw is that he is one of Bielsa’s favourite players at Leeds; someone who Bielsa has genuinely been heard to describe privately as having the right attributes for a Champions League side.”

But now, with him set to be out for a month or perhaps even longer given there’s no real timeframe just yet, Leeds’ midfield options look very bare to say the least.
