Tim Nielsen, Australia’s coach, has launched a lengthy defence of the fourth-day tactics that have landed Ricky Ponting in the firing line from a wide range of commentators and former players. At stumps on Sunday, before much of the criticism had occurred, Nielsen said he did not for a moment believe Ponting had failed to push hard to win the match.Nielsen has had more than two days to reflect on Australia’s decision to use part-time slow bowlers after tea on Sunday, at a time when a quick end to India’s innings could have given Australia a gettable chase. In his blog on Cricket Australia’s website, Nielsen wrote on Tuesday that he felt compelled to defend Ponting.”Ricky had to take a number of things into consideration and having the prospect of a suspension for slow over rate hanging over his head was only part of it,” Nielsen wrote. “It’s all well and good to now say that he should have kept bowling the quicks at any cost but the question I ask is what sort of leadership is that as a captain of Australia? Is it all right to break the rules as long as you win without worrying about the consequences?”Some of the harshest comments on Sunday came from Allan Border, the former captain and a current Cricket Australia director, who said on air: “I’m glad Ricky can’t read my mind right now because he’s not going to like it.” Nielsen said he was particularly disappointed that much of the criticism had come from inside Australian cricket’s “family”.”Whether it be commentators, past Test captains or board members that make those comments, they help shape popular opinion and it really does make it hard for the bloke who is out there trying to make decisions on the run.” Nielsen was keen to point out that Ponting had stuck with his most successful bowler, the offspinner Jason Krejza, and the plan was to let Krejza attack while tying down the runs at the other end.”Unfortunately it’s not like our fast bowlers had taken wickets on call throughout the series,” Nielsen said. “When Jason is bowling, and his figures suggest he is giving up four, five, six runs an over at different times, it’s really hard to keep the game from getting away when you’re giving up runs from both ends.”We bowled our first selected spinner for the tour in Cameron White, who had done a good job of restricting the run-rate during the first three Tests while taking very timely wickets (dismissing Sachin Tendulkar twice). Unfortunately, this time it wasn’t successful, but if it had been I think those in the media would be singing Ricky’s praises.”

Vettori seeks more application from batsmen

It’s a huge contrast between the New Zealand captain and his Australian counterpart, Ricky Ponting. A disappointing loss in the two-Test series has seen New Zealand slip to eighth on the ICC Test rankings, while Australia have received the perfect impetus

Daniel Vettori has ten days to instill a Test mindset into his players after they resembled a misplaced one-day line-up during their 0-2 loss to Australia. The series between the world’s No. 1 Test team and the group ranked seventh was as one-sided as could be expected, but both camps now move on to what should be much more closely-fought matches.New Zealand could not take Australia to a fifth day at the Adelaide Oval having also fizzled out inside four days at the Gabba last week, and the losses mean they have slipped to eighth on the ICC Test rankings. They fell below West Indies, who they take on in a Test series starting in Dunedin on December 11, while Australia will shortly be challenged by the No. 2 team South Africa.New Zealand will also have a new coach, Andy Moles, for the West Indies games and the immediate task is to convince the top order to take a longer-term approach. The batsmen lacked patience in Brisbane and again in Adelaide their shot selection was flawed as they could not make Australia bat twice, failing to learn from the resolve shown by their opponents, Michael Hussey and Michael Clarke. On the fourth day at the Adelaide Oval, New Zealand needed to stay firm at the crease. Instead, Aaron Redmond flayed at a wide delivery from the second ball of the day and was caught at point, Jesse Ryder prodded lazily to cover and Ross Taylor nudged a nothing shot back to the bowler Brett Lee. In both matches New Zealand have looked not like a Test team but like a limited-overs side being asked to play for five consecutive days.”Application is the big key because we all acknowledge that they’re pretty talented guys,” Vettori said. “The top six are all extremely talented players. We need to find a way to turn that talent into consistency, scoring runs, and in the end it does come down to application.”Part of the problem could lie in the order in which the men are sent out. Ryder at No. 3 and Taylor at No. 4 are naturally attacking players, while the next men in, Peter Fulton and Daniel Flynn, prefer to defend. It is a setup that works best when the openers make consistently strong starts, but the Redmond-Jamie How combination averages 26.64 before the first wicket falls.A loss by an innings and 62 runs was a disappointing way for John Bracewell to end his tenure as the national coach but Vettori said it was symptomatic of the way the Test side had performed under Bracewell. During Bracewell’s five years in charge, the team did not win a Test away from home against anyone but Zimbabwe and Bangladesh.”That’s not anything to do with him,” Vettori said. “He’s always set up the right plans for us…it’s the players who have let him down with this performance and probably a lot of other Test performances under him. We’ve thrived under him as a one-day team but just haven’t managed to put in the same application in our Test match performances.”It was always going to be difficult to turn that around in his final matches at the helm against the world’s highest-ranked team. Australia were coming off a frustrating series loss in India, where players like Brett Lee and Brad Haddin had struggled for impact, and captain Ricky Ponting was pleased to see those men return to form ahead of the South Africa Tests. But Ponting said the team needed to keep a win against New Zealand in perspective.”We’ve got to be realistic with ourselves,” Ponting said. “I think we were that after the Brisbane game as well. We won that Test convincingly by 150 runs but when I spoke to the guys coming into this game I felt there was a lot of room for improvement and I think we’ve all seen a great deal of improvement from most players in this game.”We know we have to play at our absolute best if we want to win the series against South Africa and I think the last couple of weeks has been a good step for us. Right through India we were a fair way below our absolute best. We were a bit off our best in Brisbane and we’ve taken a step closer here.”

Newcastle: Joelinton under fire from fans

A number of Newcastle United fans have voiced their frustration with Joelinton’s display away to Manchester United.

Newcastle headed to Old Trafford with only one point from their opening three matches, having conceded a 96th-minute equaliser last time out against Southampton.

The hosts were third at kick-off after collecting seven points from a possible nine, and were boosted further by the return of superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

Inevitably, it was the former Real Madrid and Juventus man who opened the scoring in first half stoppage time, tapping in from close range after Freddie Woodman spilled Mason Greenwood’s strike from outside the penalty area.

Newcastle then grabbed an equaliser shortly after the break through Javier Manquillo, only to fall behind once again as Ronaldo doubled his tally. Bruno Fernandes added a spectacular late goal to compound the damage for Steve Bruce’s side, with Jesse Lingard making it 4-1 in added time.

How did Joelinton play at Old Trafford?

Joelinton started up front alongside Allan Saint-Maximin in the absence of Callum Wilson, who was sidelined by a thigh injury.

The Brazilian had been limited to substitute appearances in the Magpies’ first three matches of the campaign but he did little to suggest that he should be in the team going forward.

His SofaScore rating of 6.2 was the lowest of Newcastle’s outfielders. He failed to win any of his seven ground duels and lost seven of his 11 aerial battles. The 25-year-old also recorded a passing accuracy of just 53% and was unsuccessful with all three of his dribble attempts, losing possession 15 times in total.

His performance duly drew the ire of many Magpies supporters on Twitter, one of whom dubbed him a “utter garbage man”.

“Joelinton and Ritchie are the weak area of the team, not surprisingly. Neither look comfortable in their position. Fair play to Matty for hammering a few tackles though.”

“What exactly does Joelinton do for this team, he’s got no direction with his headers. Is he playing centre forward or centre midfield today?? I would have played 4 5 1 today and left Joelinton washing the bibs”

Crystal Palace: Fans react to club’s Conor Gallagher tweet

Many Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter following an official club post showing images of Conor Gallagher from their last two matches.

The 21-year-old has made an excellent start to life in southeast London since his season-long loan move from Chelsea, registering three goal contributions in four games.

Those were marked in clever fashion by the Eagles’ official Twitter channel, with the first letter O in ‘Conor’ replaced by a football emoji to signify his brace against West Ham, and then a capital A in his surname to mark his assist in the weekend win over Tottenham.

The emoji-laden pun was duly accompanied by images of him celebrating a goal against the Irons and playing a pass in the victory over Spurs respectively.

In light of the official club post, loads of Crystal Palace fans took to Twitter to express their delight at the post, and indeed Gallagher’s performances so far at the club.

Replying to the official Crystal Palace Twitter account, here is what some fans had to say about the “perfect” midfielder:

Melissa Bulow, Clea Smith and Kris Britt have returned to national reckoning after being named in the 30-member preliminary World Cup squad for Australia. The squad also includes six players from the Australia Under-21 side – Elyse Villani, Alyssa Healy, Corinne Hall, Jessica Cameron, Jo-Ann Verrall, Jessica Jonassen – who lost a close Twenty20 game against the senior team in October last year.Bulow and Smith last played for Australia in the Rose Bowl series against New Zealand in 2007, while Britt was dropped after a poor ODI series against England in February last year. Renee Chappell was called up to the national squad for the 2008 Rose Bowl series but did not get a single game.Eighteen-year old Healy, who is a wicketkeeper like her uncle, the former Test player Ian, said the news of being named in the squad came as a shock. Healy said her uncle had been a willing mentor in her career so far and was always happy to help her out with tips on the game. “Watching him keep for Australia definitely inspired me to do better things when I was younger. Knowing how much work he put in to get to where he wanted definitely helped me learn a few things about how I can better myself as a cricketer,” Healy was quoted as saying in the ICC website. She expected the top four teams – Australia, England, New Zealand and India – to be extremely competitive in the tournament. “However competition could come from any of the other seven sides so it will be a tough tournament for the Australian girls.”Australia preliminary women’s World Cup squad: Karen Rolton (capt), Lisa Sthalekar, Alex Blackwell, Kate Blackwell, Melissa Bulow, Kris Britt, Sarah Andrews, Jessica Cameron, Renee Chappell, Leonie Coleman, Lauren Ebsary, Sarah Edwards, Rene Farrell, Jodie Fields, Corinne Hall, Rachel Haynes, Alyssa Healy, Jessica Jonassen, Delissa Kimmince, Shelley Nitschke, Erin Osborne, Ellyse Perry, Kirsten Pike, Leah Poulton,, Emma Sampson, Clea Smith, , Selena Tainton, Jo-Ann Verrall, Elyse Villani, Julie Woerner.
