Newcastle fans, like the majority of the footballing world, will be tuning into BT Sport when the 1st June comes around to watch the Champions League final in Madrid. However, for the Geordies, it will feature some familiar faces. In the middle of the park, Moussa Sissoko will be up against Georginio Wijnaldum, two former Toon Army members.

Funnily enough, the pair of them were both part of the Geordies 2015/16 relegation season that saw Steve McLaren make two Champions League quality midfield aces look like Championship flops. They went out with a bang at the end of the St James Park days, though, blasting Tottenham 5-1 on the final day of that season. It didn’t last as they were then sold for a combined £55 million, and here we’ll be comparing the pair before they meet in Spain.

GEORGINIO WIJNALDUM

£25m Wijnaldum only resided in the Northeast of England for one season in between longer spells at PSV and Liverpool. The Dutchman is currently flying high at Anfield and after inspiring the Kopites to one of their best ever comebacks against Barcelona in the semi-finals of the Champions League, he will undoubtedly go down as a Liverpool legend, especially if the Reds overcome Spurs in the final.

During his Newcastle days, the Geordies had a rollercoaster of a ride with Wijnaldum scoring goals and providing the very few sparks in an otherwise dull season. The anomaly is that the Dutchman didn’t bag a single goal away from the comforts of St James Park and his brightest moment was a four-goal haul against Norwich City, and if he can get anywhere near that level of performance against Spurs he will be a European hero.

TT GRADE: A

MOUSSA SISSOKO

Does anyone actually know what’s happened to Moussa Sissoko this season? The £30m Frenchman has been one of the best players in the Premier League this season the way he’s shone from the middle of Tottenham’s midfield. His ability to drive past opposition midfielders and turn defence into attack in an instant has completely turned his reputation around in North London, and rightly so.

Sissoko, unlike Wijnaldum, actually stuck around at St James Park for a little bit longer than the one solitary season. Now 29-years-old, Sissoko spent three and a half seasons with the Magpies following his January 2013 move from Toulouse, and whilst he did his bit to keep them in the Premier League in the 2014/15 season, he couldn’t repeat the feat the next season, even if he is now a Champions League finalists just a few years later.

TT GRADE: B

TT VERDICT

Right now, it’s tough not to give this one to the reformed Sissoko. However, when you apply common sense and look at the talents of both Wijnaldum and the Frenchman, their influence in getting to the Champions League final and ultimately their levels for Newcastle United back in the day, you just cannot overlook the incredible Dutchman in this one.

According to The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur want to sign Bournemouth pair Callum Wilson and David Brooks in this summer’s transfer window.

And the report has claimed that Spurs would have to pay close to £80m in order to land the attacking duo ahead of the 2019-20 campaign.

Both players excelled for the Cherries during the recent season.

Wilson netted 14 Premier League goals and provided ten assists, whilst Brooks managed seven goals and five assists in his first season in the top flight.

According to The Sun, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is prepared to spend big on the pair this summer.

The Spurs fans have been on social media reacting to the claim and it would be fair to say that there are a lot of differing opinions.

However, a large number are seemingly not keen on their side spending £80m on the two players this summer.

وتابع: “موقف صعب، وعندما يضطر كيتا للخروج بسبب إصابة عضلية فأنت تعلم أن المشاكل لن تتراجع”.

وأردف: “يعلم الأولاد أنهم عندما يُسمح له بالتدريب معنا، فهم يتمتعون بالجودة الكافية التي تؤهلهم للقيام بذلك، نحن لا نعطي تذاكر للقدوم إلى التدريب، يجب أن تتواجد معنا بناءً على الموهبة والكفاءة، هناك الكثير من الأمور التي تسبق تلك الخطوة”.

واستمر: “لقد استحقينا ما حققناه، لعب الأولاد مباراة رائعة ضد خصم كبير كبير كبير!، أنا لا أعتبر مثل هذه الأمور من المسلمات، كان الأولاد متحمسين لكرة القدم، كان علينا تسجيل المزيد من الأهداف، لاعبونا في الخط الهجومي لم يلعبوا سويًا في كثير من الأحيان، ولكن الطريقة التي لعبوا بها أمام ليستر لم تكن سيئة”.

West Ham United are set to make a new bid for Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes, per Claret and Hugh.

What’s the word?

The Hammers are hopeful of securing a deal to sign the Portugal international, who spent the season on loan at Everton.

Gomes made a total of 29 appearances in all competitions during his time at the Toffees.

The Irons opened the bidding with an offer of £18million, which was rejected by the Catalan giants, and the report claims that the club are now willing to spend as much as £25m on the player.

Manuel Pellegrini is said to be keen to secure the midfielder and has instructed co-owners David Gold and David Sullivan to agree terms.

Tottenham Hotspur have also been linked with a move for Gomes, with Mauricio Pochettino also believed to be hopeful of bringing the star in.

The all-around midfielder

West Ham need Gomes.

This is a midfielder who is capable of doing everything and emerged as a star during his spell at Goodison Park.

Per WhoScored, he makes 1.4 tackles per game, 1.5 dribbles, and has a pass completion rate of 84.8%.

He would offer a robust, accurate presence in midfield and complement the assiduous presence of Declan Rice.

At £25m, this would be something of a snip but it remains to be seen if the Hammers can fight off the competition, with Spurs also reported to be keen on striking a deal.

If they can, they might well have found the perfect midfield signing.

Back in October, it was reported that Liverpool were willing to allow Divock Origi to leave the club if an offer exceeding £20m arrived for his services.

The Belgian international had made just three appearances before the winter transfer window, all of which were from the bench as he looked to have no real future at the club – his game time added up to a measly 83 minutes before the turn of the year.

Daniel Sturridge was the preferred option ahead of Origi, who had just spent the entirety of the 2017/18 campaign out on loan with Wolfsburg without making an impact, and things looked bleak for the former Lille striker at Anfield.

If the Reds had received a suitable offer for the 24-year-old back in January, their season would have turned out vastly different.

For a start, the Premier League title race would’ve probably been over before the final day, as it was Origi’s late header away to Newcastle that allowed Liverpool to take it to the last game of the season.

However, that pales in comparison to how their Champions League campaign would’ve turned out.

After a crushing 3-0 defeat to Barcelona in the first leg of the semi-finals, Jurgen Klopp was without two of his main men in Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino for the second leg in which Liverpool needed to score four goals without reply to progress.

Origi came in to replace Firmino and netted almost immediately to spark Anfield into life, before his 79th-minute strike put the icing on the cake of a historic comeback.

In addition to that massive achievement, it was Origi who came good in the Champions League yet again with an 87th-minute goal in the final against Tottenham, which eased the nerves of a Spurs comeback and rubber-stamped the result.

This has been a record-breaking season for the Merseysiders as they secured a sixth major European Cup, but it may not have ended with silverware had their January plans come to fruition.

VAR has come under heavy criticism this season in its first real trial in European football, with players and fans alike all seemingly baffled by how the process works.

Having netted his first goal for the Three Lions back in November against the USA, Wilson will be hoping to figure more prominently under Southgate next season.
