Mauricio Pochettino has transformed Tottenham into the team we see today since his arrival in 2013, but he needs to learn from his mistakes in previous cup exits. 

Tottenham tomorrow face Manchester City in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final, a fixture they come in as significant underdogs.

While Pochettino has indeed changed the fortunes of the North London side entirely since his appointment, he is yet to obtain any silverware, something he regularly received criticism for. Importantly, he must learn from the painful cup defeats his team have suffered in recent years.

A pertinent example to look at would be Tottenham’s FA Cup semi-final 4-2 defeat to Chelsea in which Pochettino opted to start Heung-min Son at left wing back. It was a tactical roll of the dice which went wrong.

More recently Tottenham were knocked out by Juventus in the last 16 of last season’s Champions League. It was a tie in which Tottenham thoroughly deserved to win, but ultimately it was again inexperience that cost them. Tottenham have vastly improved since that defeat gained an abundance of experience simultaneously.

In Monday’s pre-match press conference, on the upcoming Champions League fixture, Pochettino said: ‘We want to start tomorrow being very aggressive and try to dominate.’

This is perhaps not the best approach to take to a team who are so quick and dangerous on the break. City’s game plan will be to dominate and control the game themselves, countering anything Tottenham do throw forward. From experience, they know the Tottenham defence are liable to a mistake or two and will look to pounce on anything they see.

Arguably Tottenham’s best performances of the season have come against Borussia Dortmund, in which Tottenham shut up shop and looked to counter. Particularly in the return leg, they put in a defensive performance they simply would not have been capable of just a few years ago. It really seemed as if they had indeed learned from their defeat to Juventus, but they will have to show it once more against City.

Pochettino should look to replicate this kind of performance if Tottenham are to progress. He must realise that it is naive to believe Tottenham can go toe to toe with any team in the world. They must adapt their tactics to suit the match, or it could get ugly. An early City goal would be a disaster – one which may have drastic implications on the rest of the tie.

ويستضيف ملعب الكامب نو مباراة الفريقين في الجولة الأولى، من دور مجموعات البطولة.

وقال نجوين، في تصريحات نشرتها صحيفة “موندو ديبورتيفو” الإسبانية: “نمتلك مهاجمين جيدين يمكنهم مفاجأة أي فريق كما أظهروا بالفعل ضد الفرق الكبرى”.

وأضاف: “هم يعرفون أنني سريع، وسأحظى باهتمام كبير من قِبل مدافعي برشلونة بسبب سرعتي”.

امتدح توماس توخيل المدير الفني لفريق باريس سان جيرمان، لاعبه البرازيلي ماركينيوس، عقب الفوز على ديجون برباعية دون رد.

وفاز باريس سان جيرمان على ديجون ضمن منافسات الدوري الفرنسي، وتحدث توخيل عقب المباراة في تصريحات نشرتها صحيفة “لو باريزيان” الفرنسية.

وقال توخيل عن إعادة دانيلو بيريرا إلى الدفاع : “إنها ليست مسألة تكتيكية لأن دانيلو يمكن أن يلعب في هذا المركز، وماركينيوس أيضًا، إنه قلب وروح الفريق”.

وأضاف: “لديه مزيج غير عادي، إنه موهوب ولديه كل الصفات وعقلية مجتهدة، عندما يكون في المنتصف، يمكنه مساعدة جميع اللاعبين، إنه يساعد الجميع. لقد كان حاسمًا في دوري الأبطال أمام أتالانتا ولايبزيج”.

وبسؤاله: “هل تشعر أنك تفتقد مدافعًا إذا اعتمدت على ماركينيوس في خط الوسط هذا الموسم؟”، وأجاب: “لدينا كل الاحتمالات، يمكن لماركينيوس القيام بذلك لكنه أظهر أنه قادر على دفع هذا الفريق إلى نفس المستوى في خط الوسط”.

وأكد المدرب الألماني: “إنه استثنائي في الوسط، لدينا تيلو كيرير ودانيلو الذي آمل أن يتحسن، سنبحث عن أفضل حل للفريق”.

وعن مويس كين، الذي سجل هدفين أمام ديجون، أردف توخيل: “كين مهاجم، أفضل مركز له اللعب بوجود اثنين مهاجمين، إنه يزيد من قوة لعبتنا، لقد أظهر ذلك ضد نيم وديجون”.

وأتم: “كان من الصعب عليه مواجهة مانشستر يونايتد (في دوري الأبطال)، يمكنه المساعدة على هذا المستوى، لا يمكننا الانتظار طويلا، هو لم يلعب كثيرًا في إيفرتون”.

According to Super Haber, Tottenham Hotspur could sign Fenerbahce midfielder Eljif Elmas during this summer’s transfer window.

The 19-year-old, who largely operates in central midfield, has scored once in 34 appearances for his Turkish club during the 2018-19 campaign.

Tottenham are widely expected to improve their midfield this summer with Mousa Dembele leaving for China in January and Victor Wanyama struggling for game time this season – forcing Mauricio Pochettino to rely on Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko for much of the campaign.

The Premier League club’s fans have been on social media reacting to the news and it would be fair to say that not too many are best pleased with the report.

It’s taken Unai Emery months of hard-work to lay his foundations into making Arsenal a much more attractive, positive football club in his tenure.

So, to see his good work being undone by unnecessary individual errors can be especially frustrating for the Spaniard.

So whenever Shkodran Mustafi ruins Arsenal’s plans with a mistake, it’s Emery who is undoubtedly hurt the most. The error-prone German defender was back to his worst on Sunday, ending the Gunners’ unbeaten home streak with another embarrassing performance against Crystal Palace.

Coming up against possibly the most out-of-form Premier League striker in Christian Benteke, Mustafi ended up getting bullied. He was out of position multiple times, harried with his challenges and unsure of what to do. The German allowed the towering Palace striker to waltz beyond him for the opener before making a schoolboy error for the second.

Just when Arsenal were clawing back into the game after equalizing, he sloppily allowed Zaha to slide past him to score against the helpless Bernd Leno. This isn’t the first time he’s made mistakes which have cost Arsenal points. The German’s done it time and again this season, ruining their momentum and piling on the misery on Emery.

Considering he’s reportedly paid £90k (via SportRac), it simply isn’t good enough.

At this point, even Kostas Mavropanos seems a more reliable option than him. While signing a strong centre-half must be made a priority in the summer, Emery needs to deal with his Mustafi issue immediately.

However, if he keeps on persisting with the erroneous defender, the witty Spaniard’s risking destroying everything he’s built so far at Arsenal.

Crystal Palace secured safety with a sensational 3-2 win over Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday and can now breathe a sigh of relief having survived yet another season in the top flight. That doesn’t mean that there is an excuse for any poor performances now, but it does give Roy Hodgson the chance to try something different if he wants to, with the pressure alleviated.

The former England boss has come under criticism this campaign for his tactical inflexibility, so it would seem that the Selhurst Park faithful are unlikely to see anything dramatically different against Everton, Cardiff or Bournemouth, although he should consider taking up captain Luka Milivojevic’s suggestion.

On the chalkboard

Speaking ahead of the Toffees’ visit, the burly Serb said:

“Even though I felt at 39 points we had secured our Premier League status, it is nice to be writing to you now that we are mathematically safe; it is a good feeling.

“Without that pressure for the last three games, we are looking forward to these games and perhaps using these matches to try out some other options and give more minutes to the players who play a key role in our squad.”

‘Other options’ could mean that some players who have rarely featured this term may get a run out in the remaining three games, so the likes of Jairo Riedewald, Sam Woods and Joel Ward will be hoping that Hodgson obliges.

One for the future

At just 22 years of age, Riedewald has plenty of room to grow and has shown his quality in the cup competitions this campaign and for the Under-23’s, although he has been warming the bench while Cheikhou Kouyate and James McArthur keep him out the team.

Extremely calm on the ball and intelligent, the number 44 could become a key player for the Eagles in the future with a number of first team stars ageing, although it’s up to Hodgson to give him the chance he needs to show what he is capable of. Hopefully the Premier League’s oldest manager will take Milivojevic’s advice and spring a surprise in the coming weeks.

Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to react after it was revealed that Danny Welbeck will be leaving the club this summer upon the expiry of his contract.

The news was revealed over the loudspeakers at the Emirates Stadium after the final home game of the season, which ended in disappointment; the 1-1 draw with Brighton makes it practically impossible for the Gunners to qualify for the Champions League.

Welbeck only scored five goals this term, but in fairness, he has been missing since the start of November after suffering a serious ankle injury in a Europa League tie against Sporting.

Having only ever managed to score 32 goals in 126 appearances for the club, it was probably the right decision not to renew the England international’s contract.
