Nicolas Pepe arrived at Arsenal in the summer under a heavy weight of expectation that was mostly founded on the fact that he cost £72m and had scored 22 goals for Lille last season.

He struggled to adapt to the Premier League initially and took 14 league games to score his first goal from open play, but there have been signs of improvement under Mikel Arteta that suggest he could still have a big role to play this term.

The Gunners continue to compete in the FA Cup so there is a chance of silverware, and if Pepe maintains his form over the last six games, in which he has recorded the highest WhoScored rating of any Premier League player, with 7.87, then Arsenal have a good chance of success.

Pepe’s stat has naturally got fans talking about him, and there has been numerous plaudits made about the player, who has done well to transform his fortunes.

In his last six league games the Ivory Coast international has made five goal contributions in wins against Manchester United, Everton and Newcastle, even earning a WhoScored rating of 10 against the latter.

One supporter suggests that Mikel Arteta deserves the credit for the winger’s turnaround in form, and given Arsenal haven’t lost in that period it would suggest that Pepe isn’t the only player the Spaniard has helped.

Barisic only arrived at Ibrox in the summer of 2018 from NK Osijek in a deal worth £2.2m, but he has clearly impressed as Jose Mourinho’s side are eyeing up a move for him.

The Athletic’s Tim Spiers joined broadcaster Jacqui Oatley on another episode of The Molineux View podcast to discuss what happens to Wolverhampton Wanderers’ man on loan, Patrick Cutrone.

The 22-year-old forward is currently out on loan at Fiorentina but it’s still pretty unclear what will happen to him at the end of his deal, with the recent events largely complicating all matters in football.

But Spiers believes nothing will change with his contract and once he plays a certain number of games for the Italians, they will be obliged to buy him from Wolves.

Here’s what he said for The Molineux View podcast (17/3/2020): “It’s written into the contract they’ve got to play a certain number of games. So at the moment, Cutrone’s is an option to buy. And it becomes an obligation if he plays a certain number of games. So that’s written into his contract. And I don’t see that changing.”

Cutrone has so far played a total of nine games for his new team, bagging one goal and assisting another one under his belt in the process as well though the future is obviously uncertain.

Rangers fans were discussing Davie Cooper’s strike against Aberdeen during the League Cup final back in 1987.

In a pulsating encounter, Gers found themselves a goal down inside the opening nine minutes after a strike from Jim Brett. However, Cooper soon had them on levels terms after striking a quite sensational free-kick into the top left-hand corner (via Rangers). It proved a crucial equaliser as the Glasgow outfit went on to lift the trophy following a 5-3 win on penalties.

After arriving at Bramall Lane from Coventry City on a free transfer in July 2016, Fleck has helped Chris Wilder’s side spring from the lower regions of League One all the way to the upper echelons of the Premier League, scoring 5 goals and providing 2 assists in 25 appearances in the English top fight this season. The 28-year-old has won 2 caps for the Scottish national team so far and he is currently valued at £5.85m via Transfermarkt.

Reported West Ham United transfer target Joakim Maehle has spoken about his future at Belgian club Genk, in an interview with Danish publication Ekstra Bladet.

What did he say?

The Danish defender has attracted plenty of interest as a result of his displays for Genk, with West Ham, Southampton and Crystal Palace all linked with his signature.

The Saints reportedly made an £11.5million bid for the full-back in January and it is expected that a number of clubs could return for him this summer.

Speaking this week, the 22-year-old did little to quell talk of a potential move and West Ham will certainly have taken note.

“The interest from Southampton was concrete, but their bid was not high enough,” Maehle told Ekstra Bladet.

“But I still believe that one day I might end up in Southampton and the Premier League.

“My agent doesn’t tell me everything, but as I said, only Southampton have really been in the picture.”

Good move

West ham have a questionable record in the transfer market in recent years, but this looks like a move that could work out.

Maehle is a young defender with plenty of potential and would ideally add to the young core that the club are looking to develop.

At £11.5m he is still relatively affordable in a transfer market that will undoubtedly be affected by the global economic situation, so this could prove a smart pick-up.
