New Zealand 'challenged a little' with players lured by T20 franchises, says coach Stead

“In the next 12 months, we will continue to be challenged with our thinking around that, and what that looks like”

Coach Gary Stead expects New Zealand’s playing resources to be put under further pressure by the expanding franchise T20 scene, as the selectors get set to address the immediate future of Trent Boult now that he does not hold a central contract after stepping away from it in early August.Boult has deals in the BBL and ILT20 during December and January when New Zealand will be touring Pakistan. Boult’s decision to opt out of a central contract was followed by Colin de Grandhomme announcing his international retirement after taking a BBL contract just weeks later. Then, come September, even Jimmy Neesham declined an NZC contract to instead honour overseas league commitmentsStead admitted that it was a situation the game would likely be confronted with more in the coming years.Related

Near-perfect Pakistan make light work of NZ to storm into final

Two first-over slips shape New Zealand's forgettable semi-final

“I think New Zealand are a country that have been challenged a little with the likes of Trent and Colin de Grandhomme, and the decisions they’ve made,” he told reporters in Sydney. “So I think in the next 12 months we will continue to be challenged with our thinking around that, and what that looks like. I don’t necessarily have an answer for you now because I’m not sure what that will look like in 12 months’ time.”New Zealand exited the men’s T20 World Cup after a semi-final loss to Pakistan, and will be naming their squad to face India in six limited-overs games on Monday. That series will begin on November 18. Although Boult had said he would remain available for selection despite not being on a full-time contract with NZC, there was no guarantee given by the board as to when he would be picked beyond the World Cup.NZC has accommodated the pressures of the IPL by allowing players flexibility to miss late-season internationals and arrive last-minute for tours following the tournament, but the newer leagues now completely overlapping with their season adds a different dynamic. However, Stead said that the fact New Zealand players are sought-after was a sign of how well they and the country’s cricket was regarded.”I think it is a bigger challenge [than the IPL] – no doubt about it,” Stead said. “I’m sure we have a number of players that are attractive to some of the leagues as well. That says something about their calibre as players and the way we play as a team. So there’s no doubt a lot of thinking and a lot talking needs to go through that area.”On New Zealand’s T20 World Cup exit, Stead echoed the views of captain Kane Williamson that they had let themselves down, although he thought they had done well to recover from 49 for 3 to reach 152 for 4.”We are frustrated that we didn’t put out the performance we showed earlier in the tournament [which] we are capable of,” he said. “That’s the hardest thing to stomach. I don’t think we were too far away from a score that was really competitive; and full credit to Pakistan. In my opinion, [they have] the best bowling attack in the World Cup, so to scrap away the way we did was still a pretty good performance.”The home series against India will begin with three T20Is, which will be followed by three ODIs, as the focus switches towards the 50-over format with an eye on next year’s World Cup.”That naturally happens as you go through those cycles,” Stead said. “We play a little bit more one-day cricket now than we have previously. We’ve had quite a diet of T20 cricket leading into this World Cup, and that will now shift.”After India visit, there is the scheduled tour of Pakistan for two Tests and three ODIs during December and January. New Zealand pulled out of a trip last year on security advice, and the recent attack on former prime minister Imran Khan and the subsequent political unrest have raised questions about England’s visit, which precedes New Zealand’s.”We use the same security outfit as England do, so I’m sure that will give us guidance of what that will look like in the future,” Stead said.

14-cap international says he rejected Liverpool before Mamardashvili joined

Liverpool may have signed Giorgi Mamardashvili last summer, but now another international shot-stopper has claimed that he himself opted not to move to the club as their first-choice target in that position.

Mamardashvili set to move to Liverpool this summer

Alisson remains the Reds’ undisputed first-choice goalkeeper currently, and at 32 years of age, there is no reason why his peak should end any time soon.

That said, Liverpool still have to plan for the long-term future between sticks, and Mamardashvili is seemingly coming in as his eventual successor at Anfield.

The 24-year-old signed for the Reds last summer, following a hugely impressive Euro 2024 campaign with Georgia, but he is spending this season with Valencia, prior to officially joining the Merseysiders ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

That could spell the end for Caoimhin Kelleher at Liverpool, with the Republic of Ireland international such an able deputy to Alisson, but now surely at a point in his career where he needs to be No.1 somewhere. He is good enough to star for another Premier League team, so it will be interesting to see where he goes, assuming he does leave.

Lopes claims he turned down move to Liverpool

Speaking to Foot Mercato [via Sport Witness], Nantes goalkeeper Anthony Lopes says he turned down the chance to join Liverpool from Lyon last summer before the Mamardashvili agreement, admitting he may have said yes later in the transfer window.

“Did I say no to becoming Liverpool’s number two? Yes, in June, I said no. I’ll be very clear: I didn’t have that option in mind at all. I told myself that I had to keep playing, that I had fire in my legs, and that I couldn’t put my bum on the bench, even if it was at Liverpool, Bayern, or elsewhere.

“But I’ll be very clear: if this offer had come at the end of August, just before the end of the transfer window, I would have accepted it, I would have left, I would have put my bum on the bench, and I would have shut my mouth.”

Lopes could have been a shrewd addition by Liverpool in 2024, with the Nantes ace possessing a wealth of experience at the top level, making 489 appearances for Lyon during his time at Ligue 1 giants.

He is also a 14-cap Portugal international, and was part of the squad that won Euro 2016, so it is easy to see why the Reds looked at him as a good option.

At 34 years of age, however, Lopes is two years Alisson’s senior, so he wouldn’t have been considered a long-term successor to him, making Mamardashvili the better choice to come in.

“It’s like this,” said Maresca on Chelsea’s 2-1 loss to Aston Villa.

“We ask for a better performance compared to the Brighton one. I think the performance was there, we didn’t deserve the final result but we need to accept that. In this moment, it is not enough. We need to find something extra to get results but for sure, we are going to be there. The performance was very good, to go to Villa Park and play the first-half we played is an important statement. The problem at the end was the result, the result was not good for us. It was a tough one in that moment, also because we are in a bad run of results, so that is also the reason why.”

Chelsea now prepare to face Southampton this evening at Stamford Bridge, and nothing but a win will do for Maresca as he looks to turn their fortunes around. Meanwhile, BlueCo and Todd Boehly are already planning for next season in terms of bolstering the squad.

According to reports, a centre-back is high on Chelsea’s transfer agenda for the summer, and they could even look to re-sign former defender Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.

Chelsea could offer Trevoh Chalobah in part-exchange for Marc Guehi

The England international, who commanded an £80 million-plus price tag in the January window, was subject to a rejected £70 million offer from Tottenham, and it is believed that Chelsea were debating a winter deal for Guehi before recalling Chalobah instead.

Crystal Palace's MarcGuehicelebrates after the match

Now, according to reliable journalist Simon Phillips, Guehi very much remains on Chelsea’s shortlist, and they could even offer Chalobah as a makeweight any deal for the “sensational” centre-back.

“On centre backs, Marc Guehi is still a player high on Chelsea’s centre back shortlist, and again, if they could have got him for a better fee in January then they absolutely would have signed him,” wrote Phillips, via his Substack.

“So returning for him in the summer when he is expected to be cheaper as he nears the end of his contract, is certainly going to be something we expect to happen. Keep an eye on Trevoh Chalobah being used as a make-weight for this potential deal.”

Pakistan battle in 355-run chase as late breakthrough buoys England

Brook century and trio of wonder-balls give England scent of famous series win

Close Pakistan 202 (Babar 75, Shakeel 63, Leach 4-98) and 198 for 4 (Shakeel 54*, Faheem 3*) need another 157 runs to beat England 281 (Duckett 63, Pope 60, Abrar 7-114) and 275 (Brook 108, Abrar 4-120) For the best part of 32 overs, Imam-ul-Haq and Saud Shakeel thwarted an England attack that had been buoyed by a trio of superb deliveries in the first hour after lunch, to take a stiff Pakistan chase down to a potentially gripping fourth-day climax, and keep England’s hope of a famous series win on ice for another day … and potentially another Test. But then, with the shadows lengthening, and England starting to sweat on a route through a doughty 107-run stand for the fourth wicket, Imam leaned into an expansive drive out of the rough against Jack Leach, and scuffed a fast edge to Joe Root at slip to fall for 60 and crank the door ajar once more.Though Saud Shakeel endured to the close on 54 not out in partnership with Faheem Ashraf, the equation at stumps was simple. Six more wickets for England to take a 2-0 series lead with Karachi still to come, or 157 runs for Pakistan to draw level at 1-1 with their second-highest successful Test run chase of 355.Related

Abrar: come for the mystery, stay for the legspin

It had been another gripping day of ebb-and-flow Test cricket, with Pakistan’s evening alliance mirroring their free-flowing opening stand of 64 in 15 overs before lunch, in which Mohammad Rizwan – promoted to open after Imam was sent for a scan on a damaged hamstring – and Abdullah Shafique saw off the new ball at a brisk tempo of 4.27 an over.Prior to that, England themselves had effectively auto-completed their second innings, with Harry Brook’s second Test century the highlight of a fast-forwarded hour of batting in which they lost their last five wickets for the addition of 73 runs. Despite the Test still having the best part of nine sessions to run at that stage, England’s approach reflected their belief that the surface still had plenty to offer their own bowlers, and – as with their 342-run declaration in Rawalpindi – by leaving Pakistan a nominally feasible target of 355, they would be all the better placed to induce errors.Harry Brook celebrates his second Test hundred•AFP/Getty Images

And, as had also been displayed in that first Test, England possess in James Anderson a trump card every bit as unique as Abrar Ahmed had proven to be in the course of his 11-wicket debut, but also 177 Tests and 20 years more experienced. Now as then, Anderson had been a notable absentee in the opening exchanges, as Stokes held his main man back to exploit the possibility of reverse swing. When he arrived for the first over of the afternoon, he quickly transformed the innings prognosis.Anderson’s first four deliveries of the session were negotiated safely enough, but the fifth was simply unplayable – a full-length seaming delivery that angled in at Rizwan then jagged wickedly around his outside edge to hit the top of off. Rizwan looked dumbfounded as he turned to survey the wreckage, but he had to go for 30 from 43 balls, and England had their opening at 66 for 1.Leach had been warming up to share the afternoon honours, but Stokes immediately signalled for Ollie Robinson to make it an all-seam attack. In his second over of the session, he too had produced a wonder-ball. With a hint of uneven bounce forcing Pakistan’s captain, Babar Azam, to play watchfully against the straight ball, Robinson instead hit the seam a full foot outside off, and Babar, seemingly grateful to be able to leave one, could only look on aghast at the ball zipped back to hit the top of off too.Babar Azam had his off stump pegged back by Ollie Robinson•Matthew Lewis/Getty Images

Shafique all but succumbed to a near-identical delivery in Robinson’s next over, but he wouldn’t survive for much longer. Stokes rang the changes once more, recalling his quickest bowler, Mark Wood, in the final over before drinks, and with his very first ball, he burst another off-stump rattler through Shafique’s defences, again from wide of the crease, but keeping low as it skidded on with extra oomph. At 83 for 3, Pakistan’s innings was pinned to the ropes. But with his notable willingness to save his seamers for the key moments, Stokes instead leaned heavily on his spinners with in-out fields, tempting Pakistan to hit through the phalanx of close catchers. Once again, his first-innings weapon, Jack Leach, was Stokes’ most trusted option, but with two left-handers lining him up, Leach endured some rough treatment, going at 4.40 in the course of his 20 overs. Until, of course, he produced the moment that repaid the faith, and unlocked England’s prospects of closing out the game. The opportunities had kept coming regardless, up until that moment – on 4, Shakeel top-edged a slog-sweep off Root that fell short of Wood, set a few metres too deep at midwicket, while on 19, Imam drilled a hard chance back down the pitch at Will Jacks, who couldn’t cling on. The biggest let-off, however, came deep into the final session, as Imam, then on 54, flicked his bat at a leg-side lifter but Stokes declined the review that would have shown a faint tickle. It was the slightest indication that England’s captain was starting to feel the heat, as Imam and Shakeel grew in confidence with a series of sweetly-timed cover drives, particularly off the then-leaky Leach.Despite the excitement generated by England’s trio of early wickets, England found little in the way of reverse-swing as the innings progressed, on a day-three pitch that was arguably playing at its best. Stokes himself resisted any temptation to break the emergency glass and bring himself on for a spell, although that prospect remains for an intriguing fourth-day finish, when only the draw will be off the table.Imam-ul-Haq and Saud Shakeel’s partnership frustrated England•PCB

In spite of Pakistan’s relative success in the morning session, the major milestone had belonged to Brook, who converted his overnight 74 to his second hundred in four innings on this trip. By the time he holed out to deep square leg for 108, Brook had racked up 14 fours and a six in his 149-ball stay, replete with powerful strokeplay and impressive judgement of length, particularly against the spin of Abrar, who was once again Pakistan’s most threatening bowler, as he finished with 4 for 120, and an 11-wicket match haul on debut.Abrar came in for some heavy blows in the first hour, however, with Brook seizing on a series of drags to the leg-side, and Stokes launching the same bowler over the straight boundary for six, to draw him level with his coach Brendon McCullum on 107 Test sixes, the most by any player. Before he could convert that start into anything more meaningful, however, Stokes got underneath a heave to leg, where Ali on the midwicket boundary ran round for a well-judged catch. Robinson then missed a slog to leg as Abrar skidded a googly through his gate for his 11th wicket, before Wood poked a fast legbreak from Zahid Mahmood to slip and Anderson missed a reverse sweep to wrap up the innings. At that stage, and again after lunch, England were perfectly content with their match situation. By the close, notwithstanding Leach’s late breakthrough, they were a touch less comfortable.

-O atual momento do clube é OK, nada espetacular. Também não é a ponto de performance, não é desesperador. Gosto muito do Rogério como treinador, fiquei lá agora acompanhando, a última parte da minha Licença A, ele e o São Paulo. De novo, o clube abriu as portas. Insider now believes Aston Villa will lead race to sign "incredible" star

Potentially stealing the transfer headlines once again, a Premier League insider has now backed Aston Villa to lead the race in pursuit of one particular attacking reinforcement this summer.

Aston Villa transfer news

After grabbing the spotlight by signing Marco Asensio, Axel Disasi and Marcus Rashford on loan as well as welcoming Donyell Malen and Andre Garcia on a permanent basis in the January transfer window, Aston Villa look destined to return to the market this summer.

A recent 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Crystal Palace certainly suggests that there’s still plenty of work to be done in the Midlands and the Villans seem to be well aware of that with the transfer rumours coming thick and fast.

Among those who have reportedly emerged onto Villa’s radar is Porto’s Samu Aghehowa, who could yet arrive to replace Jhon Duran following his January exit to Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr.

The young forward has enjoyed an excellent debut season in Portugal, potentially sparking a Premier League battle for his signature when the summer arrives. He’s not the only attacking addition on Villa’s radar it seems, however.

Aston Villa lining up summer swoop to sign "aggressive" want-away £20m ace

He’s a wanted man…

ByTom Cunningham Feb 27, 2025

Former Premier League scout Mick Brown now believes that Aston Villa will be in pole position to sign Ferran Torres from Barcelona this summer in a move that would bring the winger back to English football.

Aston Villa backed to enter pole position for "incredible" Torres

Speaking to Football Insider about Villa’s potential move to sign Torres, Brown said: “He’s got that Premier League experience with Man City and Villa would give him the chance to play more regularly than he is at Barcelona. Their contacts in Spain will allow them to do their work behind the scenes and probably move to the front of the queue to sign him.

“They could do with a right-winger in the summer, that’s somewhere Emery wants to strengthen. Bailey and his other options come into the side, they do what they do, but they’re not a shoo-in to play every week and that’s what they need.

“Emery wants a stronger option who can nail down his place in the side. He wants more firepower on that side as well, because their left-hand side is very strong with the likes of Malen, Rashford and others.

FC Barcelona'sFerranTorrescelebrates scoring their second goal

“Adding quality and balance on the right will make them even more lethal. So it’s definitlely a deal which makes sense for Villa and I think it’s one they’re going to work on.”

Previously praised for his “incredible sense of goal” by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, Torres desperately needs a return to English football. The Spaniard has started just seven La Liga games all season and is unlikely to win his place back anytime soon amid competition from Lamine Yamal and Raphinha.

At Villa, meanwhile, if Rashford does not arrive on a permanent basis, then Torres could instantly receive the role he has been looking for since leaving Manchester City.
