Shield final: Bancroft's unbeaten century puts WA in control

Western Australia took a major step towards ending their 23-year Sheffield Shield title drought with Cameron Bancroft’s superb century putting them in a strong position on the opening day of the final against Victoria at the WACA ground in Perth.Bancroft posted his 15th Shield century and his first in a final, batting the entire day to finish 135 not out from 259 balls with 16 boundaries as WA racked up 290 for 3 at stumps.Having been sent into bat, Bancroft and Sam Whiteman, who made a classy 85, set a new record opening stand for WA in Shield finals, putting together 188 to surpass the previous mark of 155 set by Michael Hussey and Ryan Campbell in the last Shield final held at the WACA ground in 1997-98. It was also Bancroft and Whiteman’s sixth century stand together in Shield cricket.Victoria had little joy except for a late breakthrough in the final over, with Hilton Cartwright slashing the second last ball of the day from Will Sutherland to gully where he was brilliantly caught by Jono Merlo.Captain Peter Handscomb had no hesitation in bowling after the coin fell his way, perhaps spooked after seeing a very similar-looking pitch to the one that his side had been sent in on last week only to lose by an innings and 51 runs. But it turned into a lovely batting track for Bancroft and Whiteman.Bancroft, 29, showed why he was once Australia’s first-choice Test opener with one of his best Shield centuries. His often scrutinised balance and timing were on-song from ball one as Victoria’s quicks erred far too full to him in the opening session. He caressed a bevy of drives through the covers and down the ground.Whiteman was less fluent in the first hour and a half, having been tied down by the metronomic Scott Boland from around the wicket. Bancroft’s rhythm took the pressure off his partner as he reached his half-century off 83 balls with a sublime drive straight of mid-off.Whiteman’s innings was sparked when Merlo’s medium pace was introduced. He dropped short twice in two balls, and the left-hander unfurled two dismissive pull shots over forward square.WA reached 99 without loss at lunch, with Victoria managing just seven maidens in 29 overs in the first session as the ball didn’t swing or seam anywhere near as much as expected.Sam Whiteman and Cameron Bancroft shared a century stand•Getty Images

Victoria created some half chances after lunch as they stemmed the scoring for a period. Boland was particularly unlucky in the second over after the break. He found Whiteman’s outside edge with a superb delivery that zipped across the left-hander, but it somehow didn’t carry to wicketkeeper Sam Harper.Whiteman reached a patient half-century from 122 balls with nine fours but nearly ran himself out shortly after, taking on Merlo at midwicket for a sharp single, and he was fortunate the throw just missed. Bancroft hardly played a false shot, but he did slice Sutherland just high and wide of gully on 71.The pair cruised past 150 in the 47th over and past Hussey and Campbell’s record of 155. They had sights on a double century stand before Whiteman finally fell for 85 on the stroke of tea. He sliced Boland to gully attempting a square drive, and Sutherland took an excellent catch. Boland might have been fortunate not to have been called for a no-ball as replays showed he overstepped, however, the third umpire can only adjudicate on catches, run-outs and stumpings in this final with the limited technology available.Bancroft reached his century shortly after tea with a neat leg glance despite Victoria trying to set up a legside trap. He nicked a ball in the next over through a vacant second slip but continued on his dominance thereafter.Victoria were able to slow the game for a period in the first hour of the final session via their two spinners Jon Holland and Matt Short. Holland only bowled three overs in the first 48 of the day. Short was introduced with the arrival of the left-handed Shaun Marsh, and it was an inspired move by Handscomb. Marsh ran past one, beaten by clever flight, turn and bounce to be stumped by a mile for just 12.The spinners then tied down Bancroft and Cartwright as the game stalled before the second new ball. WA needed to be careful not to waste the start they had made given that first-innings bonus points could decide the final in case of a drawn match, with 0.01 of a point given for every run past 200 and 0.1 for every wicket taken in the first 100 overs of the first two innings of the match.WA were 250 for 2 when the second new ball was taken but Cartwright clattered 15 from Boland’s first over with the new ball to reassert their authority on the day. They scored 40 in 10 overs, but Cartwright will rue his false stroke right on stumps as he fell for 41 and left nightwatchman Matt Kelly one ball to face, which he survived.

Philipe Sampaio explica rápida estreia no Botafogo: 'Vim pra jogar independente do tempo'

Eles me contrataram para jogar e me coloquei à disposição.

Tivemos as oportunidades primeiro.

Projeto

Estreia no Nilton Santos

'Why change something that's working' – Moody on Sunrisers not using Tripathi, Markram as openers

Sunrisers’ head coach also says that the team “lost a little bit of confidence” after injuries to Washington Sundar and T Natarajan

Kane Williamson the T20 batter – yay or nay?

Kane Williamson’s 17-ball 9 against Kolkata Knight Riders added to his – and Sunrisers Hyderabad’s – struggles in a crucial game for them on Friday. All told, Williamson has scored 208 runs at a strike rate of 92.85 – the worst among batters with a minimum of 100 runs this season.Sunrisers have other opening options in their ranks, including Rahul Tripathi and Aiden Markram, to partner Abhishek Sharma, but head coach Tom Moody said the team management was against meddling with the middle order that had been doing the job for them.Related

Chances slim, but Knight Riders and Sunrisers are not out of the playoffs' race yet

Russell's 49* and three wickets keep Knight Riders' hopes alive

“Rahul Tripathi has batted exceptionally well at No. 3 and Markram has been one of the leading batters in the tournament at No. 4,” Moody said at the post-match press conference. “So, we felt why change something that’s working for something that’s not working.”We have trusted Kane with his quality, there’s no question of his world-class quality. So, that’s why we haven’t made that move because as we have seen throughout the tournament where the batting has been functioning really well. That is Abhishek Sharma at the top of the order, Tripathi at 3, Markram 4 and Pooran 5.”In a chase of 178 on a Pune pitch where some balls pitched on back of a length held up, Williamson kept finding the infielders, soaking up as many as 11 dots in the powerplay. He was ultimately bowled in the final over of the powerplay, trying to manufacture a scoop.”There’s some consistency to it [my struggles],” Williamson told host broadcaster Star Sports at the post-match presentation. “Hit four or five [balls to] fielders and then try a bit harder and end up walking off. So, you know it’s one of those things. The game just forever teaches us lessons. So, there’s a bit of learning for me there.”ESPNcricinfo’s experts Ian Bishop and Sanjay Manjrekar insisted that Sunrisers need to push Williamson down the order and try out other options, with time running out for them.It was another disappointment for Kane Williamson, who only managed a 17-ball 9•BCCI

“I’ve been singing this song for maybe four-five games now,” Bishop said on T20 Time:Out. “I’m a Tripathi man because Tripathi has been [good] at No. 3 but when he comes in under pressure, he has gone slow and then a wicket falls. So, that’s neither here nor there but you can’t go with Kane at the top again for the next game or two because it’s not giving the team any impetus.”Manjrekar suggested a more left-field top-order option: Washington Sundar. The 22-year-old had originally started his career as an opening batter for his state team Tamil Nadu before reinventing himself as an offspin-bowling allrounder in white-ball cricket.”I think the time has come now,” Manjrekar said. “One more innings and we see nothing happening with Kane Williamson. One wicket down, you might think it’s Kane Williamson, it’s not a big setback. But one wicket down, you see Brian Lara [Sunrisers’ batting coach] as well put his head down. That sort of deflates a team and Tripathi comes in and he’s slightly worried.”Instead of that, have young players coming in. Washington Sundar could be a nice opener to have. Try somebody else and make Kane Williamson the captain because you want to put trust in him as captain but as a batsman, I keep saying make him a bit redundant because of his form.”Moody: ‘We’ve struggled for rhythm since injuries to Washington, Natarajan’
While Washington and T Natarajan returned from injury layoffs on Saturday, Moody said that their absence coincided with Sunrisers enduring a long losing streak. After winning five games on the bounce, Sunrisers have now lost five in a row and are on the brink of falling out of the race for the playoffs.”We did get on a nice winning roll, started to play some good cricket and had everyone available for selection and then we missed a game that we should’ve won to make it six in a row,” Moody said. “Then we had injuries to Washington and Natarajan. Every team has their injuries, but they play pretty key roles for us in the side and that’s where I think we lost a little bit of confidence and also as a bowling unit a bit of rhythm to our game and method to our defence of 120 balls.”We’ve struggled to recapture our rhythm since. I thought we were a lot better with the ball [today]. Apart from the back end, there were a few that got away but when you got a world-class hitter like Andre Russell at the crease, he’s always going to be a threat. He has done it year in and year out. So, I thought generally any total around the 170 mark was a pretty good bowling performance.”

Wolves and Pereira could now sign "powerful" defender in loan-to-buy deal

Wolverhampton Wanderers could sign a “powerful” defender for Vitor Pereira in a loan-to-buy deal this January, according to a report.

Wolves and Pereira eyeing new defender

Wolves have endured a difficult first half of the Premier League season, but the 3-0 victory at Leicester City last week was the perfect start to the Pereira era, showing signs they are more than capable of steering themselves out of the bottom three.

That said, the Old Gold’s appalling defensive record under Gary O’Neil is likely to be a cause of concern for Pereira, meaning the new manager may be tempted to bring in a new defender in the January transfer window.

Sunderland’s Daniel Ballard is very much on the radar, having impressed in the Championship this season, although there may be competition for his signature from a number of other Premier League clubs.

As such, Pereira could pursue a target from a little further afield, and Wolves are believed to be in pole position to sign Lens defender Kevin Danso, having made him their no.1 transfer target this winter.

Now, there has been a promising update on the pursuit of Danso, with Football Insider reporting that Lens could be willing to orchestrate a loan-to-buy deal this January.

Internal talks over a deal have been held by the Old Gold, discussing a deal which could see Danso move to Molineux on a temporary basis, before making his stay permanent if Pereira’s side avoid relegation from the top flight.

The French club are open to a deal of that nature in order to balance the books, and there are signs the player himself could be keen on the move, with the report making it clear the Austrian is keen on a return to the Premier League.

Other English clubs are interested in the 26-year-old, but as things stand, Wolves are still leading the race for his signature.

Wolves need a centre-back

It is promising news that Wolves stand a good chance of signing the Lens defender this winter, as they are in dire need of a new centre-back.

Sky Sports’ Peter Smith highlighted the Old Gold’s defensive vulnerabilities earlier this month, with the statistics at the time showing they had conceded twice as many set-piece goals as any other Premier League team.

There are signs that Danso could be the man to rectify that issue, having been lauded as a “big, strong and powerful” centre-back, playing a key role for Lens in Ligue 1 by starting every game, barring a period out injured.

Wolves need to fix up quickly in a defensive sense if they are to avoid relegation this season, so they should undoubtedly pursue a deal for the Austria international.

As próximas 48 horas serão agitadas no Botafogo.

Fabrizio Romano: Man City in talks over signing "powerful" player for Pep

Manchester City are now in talks about signing a new a player, with Pep Guardiola looking to bolster his side this month after what’s been a disappointing season so far.

Man City make it back-to-back wins with victory over West Ham

Following a run of just one win in nine Premier League games that stretched from the start of November all the way to Boxing Day, Manchester City are back to winning ways. After beating Leicester City 2-0 just before the turn of the year, Guardiola’s side began 2025 by thrashing West Ham United 4-1 at the Etihad.

Erling Haaland scored twice on the day to take his total in the top flight to 16 for the season, while Phil Foden was also on the scoresheet for just the second time this campaign.

Erling Haaland in action for Manchester City

But while the scoreline evoked memories of the City of old, the performance once again left little to be desired, with the Sky Blues conceding chance after chance which, fortunately for them, West Ham wasted.

Speaking after the game, Guardiola conceded there is still much work to be done if his side are to return to the sort of form that saw them win four Premier League titles on the bounce.

“[Is] the old Manchester City and the way we play is back? No. You have to know it. You watched the games for years. We’re not at the level, come on. Of course there are an incredible lot of positives. But if you ask me the team is playing like it has played the years ago, no, absolutely not.”

Man City hold talks for Lens defender Khusanov

To help City get back to their old ways, Guardiola is reportedly looking to bolster his squad in the January transfer market, and, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, is keen on RC Lens defender Abdukodir Khusanov. There were reports saying that City had joined the race for the player, and there has now been a development.

Romano has now claimed that City are holding active talks with the Ligue 1 side for the 20-year-old centre-back, who has impressed for the Blood and Gold this term.

Khusanov, who already has 18 caps for the Uzbekistan national team, has been described by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig as “an excellent” centre-back and “the future legend of Uzbek football.”

Lens head coach Will Still has also lauded Khusanov, saying of him earlier this season: “He’s calm, powerful, he’s fast. He doesn’t talk but he’s good. He has very, very impressive potential,” he added.

Meanwhile, Lens director Pierre Dreossi recently told DAZN, per the Mail Online, that Khusanov “will leave” the Stade Bollaert-Delelis in January, but that “there haven’t been any good bids yet.”

Cristiano Ronaldo’s former agent, Jorge Mendes, has been put in charge of trying to sell Khusanov, and it looks as if a move to the Etihad will be one to watch.

All-round Shadab Khan fashions 3-0 sweep of West Indies

Akeal Hosein hit a rapid 60, while Nicholas Pooran surprisingly got four wickets, but visitors fell short in the end

Danyal Rasool12-Jun-2022

Shadab Khan hit 86 with the bat, and took four wickets with the ball•PCB

48 overs Pakistan 269 for 9 (Shadab 86, Imam 62, Pooran 4-48) beat West Indies 216 (Hosein 60, Shadab 4-62, Hasan 2-29) by 53 runsA sensational all-round performance from Shadab Khan sealed a commanding 53-run win for Pakistan, and a 3-0 series win to give their World Cup qualification hopes a major fillip. The 23-year old came in with the hosts in a spot of bother at 117 for 5, serving as both anchor and slogger through various stages of the second half of the innings, before a four-wicket haul with the ball brought the visitors down. The 269 that Pakistan put up in the first innings might briefly have seemed like a few runs short when West Indies began brightly, but in the absence of in-form middle-order batters to shepherd the innings through, they found the Pakistan bowlers a touch too good to handle. For once, Pakistan lost the top order early despite an 85-run opening stand between Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq. It thrust significant responsibility on the middle order, with Shadab Khan stepping up to the mark, as his 78-ball 86 helped Pakistan to a defensible 269.West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran was the surprise architect of the hosts’ middle-order collapse, getting significant spin and bounce as his first four ODI wickets left Pakistan tottering at 117 for 5. The game was also suspended by an unexpected dust storm on a hot day in Multan, leading two overs being sliced off the contest.Pakistan chose to bat first, with a more cautious Zaman prioritising time at the crease over his trademark truculence. The first third of the innings was spent with the two turning the strike over and minimising risk, and aside from an early drop from Shai Hope that reprieved Imam, the openers looked fairly comfortable.Pooran, who had before today bowled just three balls in ODI cricket, brought himself on, and in his third over, yorked Fakhar to provide his side the breakthrough. Following that, Hayden Walsh Jnr stunned Multan next over by trapping Babar Azam in front, with a successful West Indian review sending him back for 1.Three further quickfire strikes from Pooran – including two in three balls – dismissed Imam, Haris and Mohammad Rizwan, as Pakistan suddenly looked vulnerable to being bowled out early. But Shadab and Khushdil Shah strung together an 84-run partnership, coming either side of a dust storm that briefly reduced visibility at the ground to almost none. When the players returned, the sixth-wicket pair upped the tempo, and though Khushdil never quite moved into top gear as he is so lethally capable of, it was Shadab who was having the more telling impact on the innings.Akeal Hosein tried to keep West Indies alive, before Shadab had him stumped•PCB

And when Akeal Hosein breached Khushdil’s defences, the responsibility on Shadab only rose; and so did he to the occasion. He brought up his half-century the following over, shepherding the strike with the responsibility of a frontline batter and the artistry of a modern death-overs game management specialist. Shadab found regular boundaries, and for a brief time, might have entertained thoughts of a maiden international hundred before a perfect yorker breached his defence as he tried to lap it over fine leg. However, by then he had 86, and against a West Indies batting line-up reeling from the second game, Pakistan took momentum with them at the halfway mark.In the absence of Shaheen Afridi, Pakistan’s new-ball attack carried an intrigue in itself, and debutant Shahnawaz Dahani swiftly delivered. After a breezy start from West Indies, Dahani drew Kyle Mayers into a slash that found Imam at point. Soon after, Shamarh Brooks was coaxed into chopping one on to his stumps. At the other end, the luckless Hasan Ali took a wicket, only for the third umpire to find he had overstepped. But he wouldn’t be denied for long. A hook from Shai Hope found Khushdil sprinting across the boundary to pluck one out of thin air, giving Hasan a wicket his confidence sorely needed.West Indies had a few partnerships midway, but Pakistan kept stubbing them out before they became any kind of menace. Shadab was the chief architect of this kind of preemptive strike. Keacy Carty was undone by a gem of a legspinner that Mohammad Haris behind the stumps was quick to react to, catching the batter out of his crease, while a loose shot from Rovman Powell found Zaman at long-off.The only reason Pakistan might have had to put their victory celebrations on hold was a feisty counterattack from Hosein, who breathed some hope into the West Indies camp when he smashed Mohammad Nawaz for two sixes in an over.Shadab was smashed for one too off the first ball of the next, but he wouldn’t be kept quiet for long, coming back to deceive him with a wrong’un, with Haris reacting sharply behind the stumps once more to whip the bails off. That knocked the stuffing out of the West Indies side, who, despite enjoying plenty of success in phases of play this series, never really did enough to merit an outright win on the tour. Pakistan managed to cash out in the heat, while with World Cup qualification becoming an uphill task, West Indies found themselves left out in the cold in Multan.
