Having been inspired by New Zealand’s victory in the 2000 Women’s ODI World Cup, current captain Sophie Devine is conscious that her team has the chance to leave a legacy in a home tournament but has encouraged the players to focus on what they do in the middle rather than a bigger picture.New Zealand’s lone success in a global tournament came 22 years ago when they beat Australia by four runs in the final in Christchurch. It was an early memory for an 11-year-old Devine who has since gone on to be one of the best players in the world and will lead a side buoyed by recent success over India. While crowds are likely to be limited throughout the competition due to Covid-19 restrictions, she hopes the New Zealand people really get behind their team as they did during the men’s run to the 2015 World Cup final when they went undefeated on home soil.”That was probably one of the first games of women’s cricket I watched on TV, it’s not a bad one,” she said of the 2000 final. “There are so many memories. There’s a number of us who were inspired by those players in that tournament and it’s pretty incredible to think here we are, some 20-odd years later, hosting our own World Cup and the opportunity to hopefully replicate what they did well back in 2000.”It’s something we have spoken about as a group. Think when we get too caught up in potentially the outside distractions that come with trying to leave a legacy we can probably get drawn away from what we are here to do.”We know if we play a really exciting brand of cricket that we can get the whole country behind that’s going to leave a legacy, we don’t need to worry about that. Think that’s something the Blackcaps did particularly well in 2015. They really did have the whole country behind them, and we are hoping we can do something similar with igniting that passion that so many Kiwis have for their sport and hopefully they can get in behind us as well.”New Zealand have been honest with themselves in the lead-up to the tournament about the added pressure that can come with hosting a World Cup. The top four teams from the group stage will qualify for the semi-finals.”We were fortunate, we spent some time together before we came into camp for the India series where we were able to talk about these expectations that might be placed on us,” Devine said. “We know people will talk, there will be a level of expectation that we are hosting, that previous winners have been the host country, again for us it goes back to the simple thing of our process and making sure we are doing the same things that we have been doing for the last couple of months. There’s a bit more hype around it being a World Cup but at the end it’s another game of cricket.”New Zealand go into the World Cup on the back of the 4-1 victory over India, their first ODI series since 2018 and the four wins is more than they had managed across the last three years in total, although they have suffered a blow with the loss of Lauren Down to injury. Devine, who was named permanent captain in 2020, said she believed the team was heading in the right direction even when results did not reflect progress.”It’s a huge confidence-builder for us, we played some excellent cricket,” she said. “The thing that was most pleasing for me was the consistency in the group, to score 250 regularly is something that we’ve demanded for the last couple of years and to be able to do that against a world-class side in India, a couple of big chases as well, will hold us in really good stead.”

He’s like Isak: Liverpool can finally axe Nunez with bid for £70m "monster"

The air of invincibility around Arne Slot’s Liverpool soured somewhat when Fabian Schar arced the ball past the hapless Caoimhin Kelleher’s net, claiming a draw for Newcastle United in the Premier League.

Liverpool’s nine-point lead has been reduced to seven, with Arsenal and Chelsea both winning and then Manchester City just behind.

Slot’s staggering standards have given rise to title dreams, but Liverpool aren’t a perfect team, and were proven to have chinks at St. James’ Park, a stadium known to swallow the mightiest of teams into its maw.

There was always going to come a point when Liverpool would drop points, but it is the manner of the Reds’ draw that rankles. Mohamed Salah inspired Liverpool once again, hauling two goals and an assist, but Schar’s late riposte was a by-product of lacklustre defending.

The backliners aren’t the only culprits, however. Darwin Nunez has long polarised the Liverpool and Premier League communities, and sadly, he did his detractors a favour with a woeful display on Tyneside.

How much longer will Slot keep him in the mix?

Darwin Nunez continues to frustrate

It’s been an interesting season for Nunez. Though he’s only scored three goals across 18 appearances under Slot’s wing, there’s a fresh, minimised focus to his tactical role, with headway made in dribble and duel success, for example.

However, the 25-year-old continues to be erratic and lacks the potency that his peers like Salah, Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota and the rest have honed over the years. In a phrase: Nunez leaves plenty to be desired, and endured a torrid evening in Newcastle.

The difference between the Uruguayan and Alexander Isak was steep. Where Isak thrived, Nunez toiled; the Swede showcased keen-edged clinical qualities, his counterpart added more wasted chances to the thick catalogue.

Remarkably, Isak’s goal-and-assist performance against Liverpool also saw him win more duels than Nunez, complete five key passes to his rivals’ zero and, again, five dribbles to none.

You can’t help but wonder if Slot watched Isak strut his stuff with a taste of bitterness in his mouth, jealous of Eddie Howe’s number nine.

Liverpool won’t be breaking the bank for a new centre-forward this winter, but appear to be doing due diligence on an upgrade up top ahead of next summer.

Liverpool eyeing new striker

Earlier this week, Italian outlet Calciomercato revealed that Liverpool are among the contenders for Inter Milan forward Marcus Thuram, who has been in fine fettle since moving to Serie A on a free transfer at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

The Frenchman is athletic, pacy and powerful and has a proven track record of bringing goals home for his employer, crucial in winning the Scudetto last term. However, financial issues are what they are and he would fetch a lucrative reward for Inter.

Though Inter are willing to negotiate his sale, they would certainly be seeking to turn a hefty profit. Thuram’s release clause is understood to be set at €85m (£70m).

Marcus Thuram could be Slot's own Isak

Hailed as a “physical monster” by journalist Herve Renard, Thuram is dynamic and flexible in regard to positional placement. In fact, the Les Bleus star has played across a range of roles over the duration of his career and could be the perfect new weapon to stand proud at the front of Slot’s system.

It’s clear, however, that his goalscoring feats are best realised in a central striking role, where he has been exclusively deployed this season, returning ten goals and six assists across only 17 matches for Nezarruzi.

Aged 27, this would be the perfect time to bring Thuram into the mix, especially given that his movements and energy would make for a fitting Nunez replacement while also providing Liverpool with a new sense of security in the focal frontman.

Salah is an incredible asset, but Liverpool will come unstuck if relying on the Egyptian to bail them out too many times this season.

Sadly, Nunez is into his third campaign on Merseyside now, and it doesn’t look like he’s going to reach the free-scoring levels that clearly were envisaged. Thuram would be the perfect successor, not least because he carries not only similar properties to the South American but Isak too.

FBref record Isak to be a striker of similar likeness to Inter’s attacking titan, with his clinical edge married to a forward-driven mentality, ranking among the top 18% of forwards across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for progressive carries and the top 15% for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90.

Newcastle’s main man ranks among the top 7% for progressive carries per 90 and the top 18% for pass completion.

Isak is more energetic in his production and boasts a better goal record too. That said, he’s posted just six goals from 14 matches in 2024/25, albeit hitting brilliant form in recent weeks. Still, it’s a testament to Thuram’s levels.

Thuram is perhaps more combative than both Isak and Nunez, for he has not only won 56% of his contested duels in Serie A this season, as per Sofascore, but averaged 4.9 per game too – which is impressive for a striker, Nunez averaging 3.40 (39%) while Isak 2.40 (28%) per fixture.

He’s the real deal, at the height of his game and having developed a taste for silverware. Liverpool would score a winner with this one, and must ensure that they act on their interest, should the stars align, and take the next step in their exciting development under Slot.

Time misto: já classificado, o Botafogo vai poupar jogadores.

Maresca must unleash "bargain" Chelsea star who’s as important as Palmer

Chelsea return to Premier League action today as they prepare to take on Thomas Frank’s Brentford side at Stamford Bridge in the evening kick-off.

The Blues beat Astana away from home in the Conference League on Thursday, winning 3-1, thanks to two goals from Marc Guiu and one from Renato Veiga.

Enzo Maresca handed chances to a number of young stars in a heavily rotated side, with the likes of Veiga, Guiu, Sam Rak-Sakyi, and Carney Chukwuemeka all featuring.

The Chelsea head coach should go back to his Premier League regulars for this clash with Brentford, though, and Cole Palmer is, perhaps, the most nailed-on player to come back in.

Cole Palmer's form this season

The England international, who was not included in the Conference League squad, has been in sensational form in the top-flight this term and should start tonight.

Palmer started the last Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur last Sunday and scored twice in the 4-3 win, with both of his strikes coming from the penalty spot.

The left-footed wizard has now scored 11 goals, created 11 ‘big chances’, and registered six assists in 15 appearances in the league so far this season for the Blues, which speaks to his importance in the final third.

Cole Palmer for Chelsea

Palmer has the quality to be a match-winner and difference-maker for Chelsea at the top end of the pitch and should come straight back into the starting XI this evening.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, it may be as important for Maresca to start another Blues attacker against Brentford, as Jadon Sancho has been in fantastic form of late.

Why starting Jadon Sancho is important for Chelsea

The English magician, whose £25m permanent option price tag was hailed as an “amazing bargain” by Ian Wright, has produced two goals and one assist in his last four matches for Chelsea in all competitions, including a strike against Spurs on Sunday.

His goal against Tottenham came at a crucial time for the Blues. They were 2-0 down after 11 minutes and Sancho’s sensational drive inside from the left and low finish into the bottom corner from distance pulled a goal back and started the comeback for the away side.

The Manchester United loanee’s all-round play in the game was also vital for Chelsea because his composure and intelligence on the ball are conducive to high-quality football.

As you can see in the table above, Sancho completed more passes, with a higher success rate, and managed more open play shots on goal than Palmer did, despite the left-footed ace having more touches.

The former Borussia Dortmund star thrives on linking up with teammates and playing the extra pass to create the best possible outcome for his team, which was best illustrated by his excellent pass to release Moises Caciedo in the box, who then won the first penalty that Palmer scored from.

Sancho’s decision-making, reliability, and quality in possession on the wing make him an incredibly important part of Maresca’s attacking unit, as illustrated by his recent goal contributions and his exceptional performance against Spurs.

Chelsea struck gold selling PL star who Lampard thought was "exceptional"

Chelsea made an excellent call in selling one of Frank Lampard’s key players.

That is why unleashing him from the start against Brentford this evening is as important as bringing Palmer back into the starting line-up is, as they are both crucial to the attack.

PCB summons ex-MCG curator ahead of Lahore Test

Decision part of Ramiz Raja’s plans to overhaul state of pitches in Pakistan

The PCB has sought the services of former MCG and ICC academy curator *Toby Lumsden for a 10-day period to oversee pitch preparation ahead of the third Test against Australia in Lahore. He will also assist local curators as part of chairman Ramiz Raja’s broader plan to overhaul the process of pitch preparation in the country.Australia’s first Test tour to Pakistan in 24 years has been marred by plenty of criticism over the state of the pitches. Last week’s series opener in Rawalpindi ended in a tame draw, with the surface being rated by the ICC s “below average,” leading to the venue getting a demerit point. ‘Only 14 wickets fell across five days. While Pakistan managed to take all 10 Australian wickets in the first innings, the visitors managed just four overall, with Pakistan making 476 for 4 declared and 252 for 0 when the match was called off.Related

ESPNcricinfo understands the surface for the ongoing Karachi Test was originally meant to assist the spinners. However, it has also been deemed too slow and not to its character. Australia batted for over six sessions after winning the toss to put up 556, with the Test very much in their control despite Abdullah Shafique and Babar Azam having put together an unbroken 171-run third-wicket stand in pursuit of 506.Raja has initiated an overhaul of pitches, and is set to look at installing readymade drop-in pitches from Australia in Lahore and Karachi as early as next year. The PCB is understood to have ordered two drop-in pitches in a bid to simulate Australian surfaces, which they believe would help their players acclimatise better on overseas tours.Lumsden landed in Lahore earlier in the week to begin work.

Rangers flop is being compared to an £85m star after leaving Ibrox

Glasgow Rangers underwent something of a rebuild during the summer transfer window as Philippe Clement allowed several first-team stars to depart Ibrox while bringing in quite a few new players.

Out went the likes of Connor Goldson, Todd Cantwell, Sam Lammers, Scott Wright and Robby McCrorie as the Belgian sought to stamp his authority on his squad.

Rangers defender Connor Goldson.

Not much was known about the transfer fees that the Light Blues brought in for these five players, but recently, chief financial officer James Taylor confirmed at the AGM that the figure was £800k.

Not just for one player, but for all five. An incredible revelation and proves just how poorly the club has been run in recent years.

Lammers is a prime example. He cost around £3m from Atalanta in the summer of 2023 as Michael Beale was looking to bolster his team.

Former Rangers boss Michael Beale.

He left after just a year, but it is evident given Taylor’s comments that the club lost a massive amount of money on the Dutchman.

Sam Lammers' statistics at Rangers

Given that Lammers had scored a grand total of six goals across the previous three seasons for four different clubs, it was hardly the form of a player who was meant to spearhead a title challenge.

Between August and January, Lammers played 31 times for the Light Blues, yet managed to get on the scoresheet just twice, while adding two assists. It became clear that Beale had wasted millions on a player who lacked the physical nature to shine in Scottish football.

Sam Lammers

In the Premiership, Lammers created only one big chance in 17 matches, also averaging 0.3 key passes and succeeding with 1.1 dribbles per game. Beale preferred to utilise the Dutchman in an attacking midfield slot, believing that his technical ability could cut through defences.

Unfortunately, this tactical blueprint didn’t quite work out, and he was loaned to FC Utrecht in January.

Whatever was lacking in Scotland finally emerged during his spell in the Eredivisie, as he scored 11 goals and provided four assists in just 20 matches for the club in what was a stunning turnaround in form during the second half of the season.

Any notion that he might make it at Ibrox was quelled when Clement sold him to Twente during the summer. This allowed the manager to get high wages off the bill while giving him space to bring in another player.

So far, however, the 27-year-old has been in the form of his life back in his homeland, emerging as one of the finest players in the Dutch top flight.

Sam Lammers' form after leaving Rangers behind

The attacker is certainly continuing the form he displayed last year into the current campaign for his new side.

While he may not have led them into the Champions League group stages, Twente are currently taking part in the Europa League, where the forward has scored twice in five games.

Domestically, however, is where Lammers is showcasing his finest form, that’s for sure.

In 15 matches for Twente, the former Rangers player has netted six times along with chipping in with two assists, propelling the club to fifth place in the league table at the time of writing.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

Not only does he rank second in the squad for goals and assists in the top flight, but Lammers also ranks second for shots (2.8), ninth for key passes (0.8) and fifth for successful dribbles per game (0.5) along with ranking second for big chances created (four), indicating just how impressive a signing he has been.

Rangers forward Sam Lammers.

Journalist Jonny McFarlane dubbed the move that brought Lammers to Scotland in 2023 as a “baffling deal” recently amid his form in the Netherlands.

Of course, Lammers wasn’t anywhere at the level required to perform for a club the size of Rangers, but perhaps his attributes simply weren’t suited to Scottish football.

As he has proven since the start of the year, the striker is not a bad player, far from it, but his move to the Light Blues was certainly a case of the wrong player at the wrong time.

His displays after leaving mean that the forward is now similar to a player who made a big-money move in the summer and was even touted for a £35m move to Chelsea; Samu Omorodion.

The youngster didn’t end up moving to London, joining Porto instead in a deal worth around £12.7m, which appears to be a stunning bargain given his current form and potential to get even better.

Now boasting an £85m release clause, the Spaniard has been good value for that price tag having scored 14 goals across 17 games, along with grabbing one assist in what has been an impressive start to life in Portugal.

According to FBref, Omorodion is the fifth-most comparable player to Lammers in the Europa League this term.

The pair have also registered similar statistics with regard to various performance metrics in the Champions League’s sister competition, such as goals and assists (2 vs 4), shots per 90 (2.68 vs 2.57), shot-creating actions per 90 (2.68 vs 3.42), goal-creating actions (2 vs 1) and touches in the attacking penalty area (24 vs 25).

These statistics prove that if the ex-Rangers man can continue performing well at this level, he could increase his market value substantially and finally realise his vast potential.

Although the forward didn’t live up to expectations during his spell in Scotland, Lammers is now proving plenty of people wrong back in his homeland.

Who knows, these displays this term might just see him secure another move to a top-five European league next summer. At 27, there is still plenty of life left in him yet.
