Ex-England international Lampard spent 13 memorable years with the Blues as a player, registering 211 goals while landing three Premier League titles and a Champions League crown. He returned to Stamford Bridge as manager in 2019 after cutting his coaching teeth at Derby.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

That reign lasted 18 months, through to January 2021. Lampard answered an SOS call in April 2023 – a matter of weeks after leaving Everton – as he stepped in as caretaker and oversaw 11 games at the helm through to the end of that season, picking up just one win in the process.

Lampard has had to start again, having taken over at Coventry, and has helped to guide them into the Championship play-off places. He is considered to have shown fellow “great” Wayne Rooney how a reputation can be salvaged, with another stint in west London not being ruled out.

WHAT ANDY TOWNSEND SAID

Former Chelsea midfielder Townsend has told : “The way Coventry have been playing lately, Frank Lampard could be in the Premier League next year. Coventry have had some great times in the Premier League.

“I've said it on many occasions, I like to see great ex-players moving on and succeeding in management. I don't like to see what happened to Wayne Rooney down at Plymouth and coming out of Birmingham after such a short period of time.

“He was an unbelievable player. I like to see good players go into management and have an effect. I remember when Frank went into Chelsea when they were under that embargo, he had to turn to some of the younger players, and certainly they developed under his leadership.

“It hasn't always worked for him where he's been, but right now his team look good and they're exciting to watch. I've got some friends locally that go there every week and they're really enjoying what they're seeing. It's not only about the win, and they're winning matches, but people are enjoying what they're witnessing, which is nice. I hope Frank can go and make a success of it.”

Man Utd chasing £40m Dalot upgrade who’s "one of the best young LBs"

Manchester United had a really poor month in December. The Red Devils played nine times last month, winning just three games in that time.

One of those came at the start of the month against Everton, a 4-0 thrashing at Old Trafford. They also won 2-1 away to Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League and got a famous 2-1 win away to Manchester City.

Manchester United manager RubenAmorim looks dejected

However, that was as good as it got for Ruben Amroim’s side. They then went on to lose the next four games, including a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth and a 2-0 loss away from home against relegation-threatened Wolves.

There is no doubt that United need reinforcements during January, and they have been linked with someone who could massively improve their squad.

Man United’s January target at full-back

The player in question here is Bournemouth wing-back Milos Kerkez. The 21-year-old Hungary international has massively impressed for the Cherries this season, and could now depart the club as soon as January.

According to a report from GIVEMESPORT, United are one of four sides interested in signing the defender this January. However, they are set to face competition from three big six Premier League rivals, specifically Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

It is thought that the South Coast side, who are flying in the Premier League this season, are ‘set to play hardball’ with the Red Devils and the other sides interested in signing.

Football Insider reported in December that a £40m bid would be the minimum needed to sign the defender, but they could well hold out for more.

Why Kerkez would be a good signing for Man United

Cherries boss Andoni Iraola has been full of praise for Kerkez throughout the 2024/25 campaign. At the start of November, he explained that the youngster has been “solid this season”.

AFC Bournemouth's MilosKerkezin action with Brighton & Hove Albion's Danny Welbeck

That is certainly reflected in his stats. Iraola’s trust in the young defender is clear, given he has started him 19 times out of a possible 19 in the Premier League.

He has scored once and grabbed two assists, both of which came in a famous 2-1 win over Manchester City.

Gary Neville has been very outspoken about United’s need for new wing-backs sooner rather than later. The Red Devils legend told Sky Sports that, in the transfer market, the club “have to start with the fundamentals of this system, which is the wing-backs”. The former United captain might be one person relived to see continued links to Kerkez within the past few days.

The Hungarian might be a perfect replacement for Diogo Dalot, who has been playing at left wing-back of late. In fact, Neville was critical of the Portuguese star and Noussair Mazraoui, explaining that neither are “very good in the attacking part of the pitch”. Dalot has managed just one assist so far this term in 19 Premier League games.

This is certainly a cause for concern for Amorim, and the statistical numbers back up the theory that Kerkez would be an attacking improvement. As the stats via Squawka show, the gap between the two is clear to see.

For example, the 21-year-old Cherries defender creates an average of 1.1 chances and completes 0.9 crosses per 90 minutes in the Premier League this season. In comparison, Dalot creates just 0.8 chances each game and completes just 0.2 crosses. The difference is stark.

It certainly seems like signing Kerkez, a flying wing-back who can get up and down the left flank with ease, would be an upgrade on Dalot. He is statistically better, with higher attacking output and an excellent engine.

The youngster was described as “one of the best young left-backs in football” by football scout Antonio Mango. That definitely seems like the kind of player that would be a great addition to Amroim’s squad as he looks to climb the Premier League.

Man Utd readying bid to sign £62m star who’d be a "monster" next to Amad

Manchester United have struggled in front of goal in the Premier League this season. Under both Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim, they have simply lacked the cutting edge that is needed to help propel them up the table.

The Red Devils have scored just 21 times in the top flight this season, with just four teams scoring fewer. Worryingly, they are all sides who are in 15th place or lower in the top flight.

Despite having created 46 chances for their attackers this term, United have missed the majority of those, failing to score from 33 in total. They are in desperate need of a striker and have recently been linked with someone who could convert those chances.

Man Utd target new striker

The player in question here is Nigerian centre-forward Victor Osimhen. The 25-year-old is currently plying his trade in Turkey, where he plays for Galatasaray, on loan from Italian side Napoli.

According to reports in Spain, United are one of three sides showing an interest in the striker ahead of the January transfer window. They will face stiff competition from fellow Premier League club Chelsea and French giants Paris Saint Germain for his signature.

In terms of a price for Osimhen, the three clubs above are now willing to pay the forward’s release clause, which stands at around he could cost around £62m. Although he is in Turkey on a temporary basis, there is a reported break clause in his loan.

Why Osimhen would be a good signing

Should the Red Devils sign the striker this January, there is no doubt he could bring the one thing this side desperately needs, goals. He is simply a pure goalscorer and has 12 of them in 15 games across all competitions this term, as well as five assists.

That is more than any of United’s players this season, in far fewer games, too. The on-loan star has outscored both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, the Red Devils’ two main centre-forwards under Amorim.

The Dane has scored seven times from 20 appearances this term, averaging around 0.35 goals per 90 minutes. That is incredibly underwhelming in comparison to Osimhen, who averages 0.8 goals per game this term.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The Nigerian striker has shown his class against a Premier League side in the Europa League in 2024/25. He helped himself to two goals in Galatasaray’s 3-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur away from home, more than proving he has what it takes at the highest level of English football.

Should the Red Devils bring the deadly centre-forward to Old Trafford in January, they might finally have someone who can take full advantage of Amad Diallo’s exemplary chance creation so far this term.

He has been on fire lately and ranks highly in several different metrics for United in the Premier League. As per Fbref, the Ivorian has the most assists with six and has created the second most chances, with 21.

Indeed, this partnership could be reminiscent of one that Osimhen struck up with former Napoli teammate Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The pair combined for 15 goals in 63 matches, many of those coming in the incredible Scudetto-winning campaign of 2022/23. That year, the Nigerian striker scored 31 goals in 39 games.

Signing the 25-year-old striker could go a long way to helping solve many of United’s problems in front of goal. Whilst Hojlund is a good prospect, he has not been capitalising on Amad’s chances enough.

However, the “monster” striker, as football analyst Ben Mattinson described him, could change that. He is a natural scorer of chances, as the numbers show, and if he can replicate the connection with Amad that he had with Kvaratskhelia, things may start to pick up for United.

There is no doubt that £62m is a big investment in a January window, but it just might be worth it if the Red Devils can find their best form once more.

Kane Williamson duck, New Zealand skittled to open door for County Select XI

Tourists suffer top-order implosion, losing eight wickets in a session in final bat before first Test

ESPNcricinfo staff28-May-2022County Select XI 247 and 112 for 1 (Compton 56*, Ajaz 1-12) need 152 runs to beat New Zealanders 362 for 9 dec and 148 (Jamieson 36, Wagner 36, Porter 5-31)After four playing days of largely serene progress in their build-up towards the first Test, New Zealand were blindsided by the County Select XI at Chelmsford. Jamie Porter ripped out five top-order wickets to belatedly remind the England selectors of his prowess in seaming conditions, and despite recovering somewhat from a parlous position of 9 for 5, the tourists have a scrap on their hands if they are to avert defeat on day four. This second four-day friendly, after a rain-affected outing down in Hove, has allowed New Zealand to rotate their personnel with a view to getting playing time for as many of the party as possible. But Kane Williamson, the Test captain, managed a nine-ball duck in his only outing before next week’s encounter at Lord’s, while there were single-figure scores for Tom Latham, Will Young, Devon Conway (his second of the match), Tom Blundell and Colin de Grandhomme – all likely starters in the Test XI.The dismissal of de Grandhomme completed a five-for for Porter inside five overs, leaving New Zealand on 19 for 6. That anaemic scoreline had improved to 70 when the eighth wicket fell, but the County Select XI were still eyeing up a target below 200, only for some timely lower-order resistance from Neil Wagner and Kyle Jamieson to stave off complete collapse. A 63-run stand pushed the New Zealanders towards something defendable, before Worcestershire left-armer Ben Gibbon picked up both to complete an impressive outing. The New Zealanders’ second-innings 148 meant the County Select XI would need to score 264 for victory – more than they had managed collectively the first time around. But Ben Compton continued his prolific summer with an obdurate, unbeaten half-century and although Ajaz Patel removed Dom Sibley after an opening stand worth 88, the ECB’s scratch team will return needing 152 more with nine wickets in hand in the morning. There had been little to suggest that New Zealand were in for such a torrid morning examination when the unbeaten openers, Young and Latham, resumed the innings in bright sunshine, having played out a maiden from spinner Liam Patterson-White the previous evening. But Porter struck with his third, 12th, 16th and 18th balls to leave the visitors five down and not yet into double-figures.Young was the first to go, lbw for a three-ball duck playing no stroke to one nipping back in. Williamson, who joined up with the squad this week after leaving the IPL early to witness the birth of his second child in New Zealand, had spent some time in the field on Friday and now walked out in place of Conway in his customary berth at No. 3. But quickly heading in the opposite direction was his deputy, Latham, who thick-edged Gibbon’s sixth delivery to third slip.Ben Compton led the chase with an unbeaten half-century•Getty ImagesWilliamson has not played Test cricket since November, having experienced issues with a chronic elbow problem. Although he was fit enough to play for Sunrisers Hyderabad at the IPL, his returns were underwhelming, and he would have been hoping for a lengthy stay in the middle ahead of his comeback. Instead, Porter found extra lift from a length outside off stump to induce a startled prod to slip. With Conway, another recent arrival from India, also looking for a workout against the red ball after making 4 off 14 in the first innings, Porter struck again from round the wicket, rapping the left-hander on the pads. Two balls later, wicketkeeper Blundell propped forward to also be given out lbw – although he lingered for some time after the decision, with a strong suggestion that he had got an inside edge.At that stage Porter, who has seemingly drifted out of contention for a Test cap despite being called up to the England squad in 2018, had figures of 4 for 4 from three overs; and they improved still further when de Grandhomme defended the ball softly down into the turf, only for it bounce back and dislodge the bails. The New Zealanders finally got the scoreboard moving with the arrival of Tim Southee, who cracked five fours and a six during a 17-ball innings. He scored 34 out of the 37 added in partnership with Daryl Mitchell for the seventh wicket, before another belligerent slap down the ground off Patterson-White was intercepted by the diving Gibbon at long-on. Mitchell then became the eighth wicket to fall, providing a success for Jack Blatherwick, as his ungainly attempt to pull ended up in the hands of point. From there, Wagner and Jamieson dug in for 20 overs of respectable batting that took the innings into the afternoon session. Gibbon eventually trapped Wagner with a full delivery angled into the pads, before Jamieson’s attempt to thrash the ball into Hayes Close ended up in the hands of Porter at long-off. Wagner and Southee both then delivered ten overs, their first proper bowl before Lord’s, as the County Select XI made a good start in pursuit of victory; Sibley fell cutting at Ajaz but the spinner dropped Tom Haines off Wagner in the penultimate over to sum up New Zealand’s day.

Japan's Women's Super League takeover: Why England's biggest clubs are filling their squads with Nadeshiko stars

Representing Chelsea, Man City, Man Utd and more, the number of players representing the Asian nation in the English top-flight has more than doubled

Before the 2023-24 Women’s Super League season began, there had only ever been eight Japanese players in the division’s 12-year history. Fast-forward to today, and that total has more than doubled in less than two years, with Australia, Sweden, Ireland and the Netherlands the only countries outside of the United Kingdom with more players in the WSL right now than the Asian nation.

These players are taking centre stage on a weekly basis, too. Last Friday, Fuka Nagano bagged a goal and an assist as Liverpool shocked Manchester United at Anfield. A day later, Aoba Fujino rocketed a shot beyond Chelsea’s Hannah Hampton to draw Manchester City level in the League Cup final. Then, on Wednesday, in a rematch of that clash in an all-English Champions League quarter-final, Yui Hasegawa’s remarkable composure proved vital in the move that allowed Vivianne Miedema to double City’s first-leg advantage.

At first, Japanese players only left home fleetingly, playing a handful of games in England, the U.S. or elsewhere before – in most cases – returning home to see out their careers. That has changed drastically in the last few years – and it is to the benefit of not only the WSL, but other leagues across the globe and, crucially, the national team itself.

Getty ImagesEstablished nation

This explosion of Japanese players in England, and overseas in general, is not because the nation is suddenly on the rise in the women’s game. Between 2008 and 2015 in particular, Nadeshiko was one of the best national teams on the planet. In that time, under the guidance of Norio Sasaki, Japan finished fourth at the 2008 Olympic Games, won the 2011 Women's World Cup, picked up a silver medal at the 2012 Olympics, won a first-ever Asian Cup in 2014 and reached the final of the 2015 World Cup. From the U.S. to Germany, they were going toe-to-toe with, and beating, the best teams in the world.

Underneath the senior team, Japan has always had a strong system that has developed great players, too. Indeed, they've reached the last three Under-20 Women's World Cup finals, winning in 2018, and triumphed in the U17 tournament in 2014, before reaching the final again two years later.

AdvertisementGettyMore overseas adventures

However, during the Sasaki years, players still mostly played in Japan. At the 2008 Olympics, not a single name on his roster was based abroad. By 2015, that had changed a little, but the number had still only grown to six. At the 2023 Women’s World Cup – Japan’s most noteworthy tournament since, owing to a quarter-final run and a jaw-dropping 4-0 defeat of eventual winners Spain in the group stage – it was at nine. However, eight players on that roster have moved to clubs in Europe and the U.S. in the aftermath.

For Saki Kumagai, captain of the national team and a five-time European champion with Lyon, it’s a pleasant development. “Finally,” she exclaimed with a laugh, talking to GOAL. “Here in Europe we can get an experience that… If we stay in Japan, we experience a lot of things, of course, good things and bad things, but if you stay in Japan, we can't get it.”

GettyDriven to improve

Kumagai was one of the three names on the 2012 Olympic roster who was playing abroad, then at Frankfurt. She admits it was hard, aged 20, to leave home, to move to a country with a very different language. But she knew Europe was the place to be to progress.

Many of her biggest obstacles remain for those who choose to leave Japan today. So why does she think players are suddenly doing so at a greater rate? “When we wear the national team jersey, of course, we are not against Japanese players, we are every time against foreigners, so they want to, I think, grow up, and they also realised it's important to play every day against or with foreigners at a high level, good players,” she replied. “That's why, I think.”

Yuka Momiki, who signed for Leicester City in January of last year and has also had spells in the U.S. and Sweden, shares similar views. “I think it's because we want to win, for example, the World Cup and Olympics,” she said. “Playing in Japan is exciting, but compared to England, it's not physical. Yeah, maybe we are technical, not physical. So, if we want to improve, you need to be more physical. That's why we come here and challenge ourselves and bring all these things to the national team.”

Getty ImagesPlenty of quality

There is a growing desire among Japanese players to take on these challenges, then – and it is matched by top clubs in England, Europe and the U.S. wanting to sign them. Unsurprisingly, there were players who got big moves off the back of the 2023 World Cup, with Hinata Miyazawa, the Golden Boot winner, moving to Manchester United, while Riko Ueki, scorer of the second goal against Spain, joined West Ham. But clubs have not just forgotten about that market in the time since.

Last summer, Manchester City brought in Japan goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita and Aoba Fujino, the lively winger who lit up the 2024 Olympics with a sensational strike against Spain. They also signed Risa Shimizu, the right-back who was already in England with West Ham, and in January, they added Aemu Oyama, a star in the youth national teams. With Hasegawa already a lynchpin in midfield, City’s squad currently features 30 per cent of all the Japanese players ever to grace the WSL.

“Mostly, we look at the profile of what we need and we found that these players really fitted our model,” Gareth Taylor, City’s head coach at the time, explained shortly after these moves were made. “They've really been welcomed within the team and really fitted in very quickly into the system and then into the way we work.”

Though there are also a lot of differences, City’s extremely technical and possession-based style has a lot in common with how the Japan national teams like to play. It’s the same for other clubs in Europe, too, as this approach to the game starts to become almost ubiquitous.

“[These players] fit in super well with the way that we want to play,” Everton boss Brian Sorensen said himself, shortly after signing Honoka Hayashi for the club. “I’ve been looking at that market for quite a while.”

Imagine him & Sancho: Chelsea want to sign "incredible" rival to Jackson

Chelsea have implemented a brave and ruthless transfer approach over the past few years, signing the best young talent on the market, before they establish themselves at the highest level.

This has included buying the likes of Enzo Fernández from Benfica, many talents from Brazil such as Willian Estevao, and other clever signings like Nicolas Jackson, Malo Gusto and, of course, Cole Palmer.

The Blues clearly want to cover all types of profiles in every department and have done well to do this. However, one area they haven’t yet completed in the squad building department is adding a box-dominant striker to their ranks, and that could be the next port of call.

Chelsea looking at Premier League star

According to David Ornstein, speaking on The Athletic FC Podcast, Chelsea have Ipswich striker, Liam Delap on their radar, as they assess the market for another striker profile to compete with Nicolas Jackson.

Other interested clubs include Tottenham, Manchester United, and even Manchester City, who could re-sign Delap after selling him to Ipswich in the summer.

Many clubs are interested in the 21-year-old forward, as he is showing brilliant signs of development at Ipswich this season, even being picked as the “obvious long-term successor” to Harry Kane in the England team by Danny Murphy.

Delap has made 15 appearances for the Tractor Boys this season, scoring six goals and providing one assist, totalling 1,046 minutes played so far. But the young forward could thrive even more with better creators around him, one of those being Chelsea’s summer signing, Jadon Sancho.

How Jadon Sancho could improve Liam Delap

Since joining the Blues this summer from Manchester United, Sancho has made nine appearances, scoring one goal, providing five assists, and totalling 492 minutes played.

The wide player has already shown his creative qualities, providing those five assists, with a mixture of different tools, picking out teammates with crosses into the box, finding clever passes into the strikers’ feet in the penalty area, and even weaving his way into the box himself with close control.

These creative metrics mixed with the clinical finishing and aerial prowess of Delap would be a brilliant combination, as Sancho would have more of a focal point in the middle to play off, finding those intricate passes into the forward’s feet to hold it up, and finding crosses for him to attack in the air.

Against Crystal Palace, Delap won a whopping eight of his nine aerial duels, which shows exactly the type of striker he is. Standing at 6 foot 1, and having a strong upper body build, it allows the 21-year-old to bully opposition defenders in the box, and configure shots for himself, whether they are on the floor or in the air.

Delap – who is an “incredible” striker in the eyes of Pep Guardiola – would offer Chelsea the perfect striker partner to complement Jackson, giving them different options for different tactical matchups, and therefore presenting Maresca with even more in his toolkit to affect games with tactical decisions both before and during games.

Jaffer: CSK are missing a wicket-taker in the powerplay

Chennai Super Kings have never had a worse start to their IPL campaign than the one they have made in 2022. After their fourth loss in as many games, talks have already started about what the defending champions need to do to stay alive in the tournament. On Saturday, after an eight-wicket loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad, repetitive questions about what all has gone wrong for Super Kings left their head coach Stephen Fleming seemingly ticked off.Related

Abhishek, Tripathi do the job as Sunrisers get on the board

Eventually, he cut it short: “I think it’s clear. Batting, bowling and fielding is what we need to work on. And moving forward we improve batting, bowling and fielding.”That reflects in the margins of defeats as well. Before their latest drubbing, Super Kings had lost two games by six wickets and one by 54 runs. In a tournament where dew has played a vital role, losing three out of four tosses hasn’t helped either.According to Fleming, not even getting close to winning has affected the self-belief of the side.”Probably each facet [of the game] is a concern, if not at one stage then altogether,” Fleming said. “We were well outplayed today. We’re sort of learning. We’ve got some issues around player availability, and in some areas a little bit underpowered, that we’re just looking for players to step up. So we’ve got some learning to do still around our players and our squad.”And we haven’t had any evidence that sort of helps the belief. We are not winning any games. Not being close to winning any games, you get a bit of self-doubt, and the players get a little bit niggly. So we just got to work through that pretty quickly and try to find some rhythm and get back in the tournament.”

Super Kings were dealt a blow even before the tournament started. Deepak Chahar, their powerplay specialist whom they bought for a massive INR 14 crore (approx. US$ 1.86 million) at the mega auction, suffered a quadricep tear during the third T20I against West Indies in Kolkata. He is yet to recover. Then, Adam Milne picked up a niggle against Knight Riders in the opening game of the tournament. It’s not clear if he is available for selection.”Deepak is a loss but if I could summarise, it’s probably batting, bowling and a little bit of fielding – it’s pretty much everything,” Fleming said when asked to specify which area they are lacking in.”But it’s just pressure, we’re just not getting ourselves in positions to pressurise the opposition and we’re just coming a distant second. It takes one or two good performances and then you get a bit of belief and a bit of evidence that you’re an okay side and away you go. But at the moment, we look a long way away from that.”

The Blast captaincy has been a poisoned chalice: Paul Coughlin, Tom Latham, Stuart Poynter, Peter Handscomb, Nathan Rimmington and Cameron Bancroft have all taken on the role, but five out of those six players left the club after their respective seasons in the role and the other, Poynter, has since been released.”We’re extremely pleased to welcome Ashton to Durham this summer to lead us out in the Vitality Blast,” North said. “In addition to his powerful batting performances, Ash is a proven leader having captained the Scorchers and Western Australia to multiple championships in recent years and will be a great addition to Durham.”Turner was overlooked in Monday’s draft for the Hundred after registering his name without a base price, but a strong season would put him in contention to become one of the £50,000 ‘overseas wildcard’ that teams will pick towards the end of the Blast’s group stages.

Chaos & pandemonium broke out at the Mestalla as Madrid players started reasoning with the referee. Bellingham couldn't keep his calm and then allegedly said: "It’s a f*cking goal, the ball is in the air. What the f*ck is that!" Manzano didn't like what he heard and reached for his back pocket, flashing a red card in the direction of the England international.

WHAT ANCELOTTI SAID

Speaking to reporters after the match, Ancelotti defended his player and opened up on the chaos of the situation, stating: "What to say, there is not much to say. Something unprecedented has happened. I think the game had to end when Valencia had possession. Then Bellingham's red card bothered us because he didn't insult [the referee]. Bellingham told him 'it's a f*king goal', he didn't insult him. We will see what the referee writes in the act. The players are angry. We all have to calm down. We have an important game on Wednesday."
