'Iconic' Ntini facing the axe

Graeme Smith has admitted the decision over Makhaya Ntini’s is a “sensitive” issue, but he didn’t give the struggling fast bowler his unqualified support

Andrew McGlashan in Cape Town02-Jan-2010Graeme Smith has admitted the decision over Makhaya Ntini’s place in South Africa’s line-up is a “sensitive” issue, but unlike during the build-up to the previous Test at Durban he didn’t give the struggling fast bowler his unqualified support. Two days on from the Kingsmead Test, Smith confirmed that Ntini would retain his place in the starting line-up at the expense of Friedel de Wet, but after a performance where he went wicketless through 29 overs the captain was no longer able to offer that backing. The decision over Ntini’s fate was being taken on Saturday afternoon and the news is unlikely to be good for one of South Africa’s most famous sportsmen.”It’s a sensitive issue in South Africa, and that’s being honest,” Smith said. “Makhaya is an ‘icon’, through the country, not only the most iconic player of colour that we have, but also one of our most iconic cricketers in terms of performance over the last decade.”When senior players are at the point where there are a lot of questions being asked about them it’s always a terrible, tough time for any leadership group to manage. We’ve really tried to support Makhaya and give him as much as we can behind the scenes.”He’s been working hard at his game. Let’s hope there’s confidence left in him for the future. It’s always tough when a guy hasn’t taken a wicket in a game to say you’ve seen improvements.”Such has been the focus on Ntini throughout this series – from the build-up to his 100th cap at Centurion to his decline in form – that Smith showed his exasperation at endlessly having to defend his strike bowler when asked again about his chances. But Ntini is more than just another cricketer in South Africa which is why the issue is so significant.”England have played him well. They’ve had good tactics against him, and Makhaya probably hasn’t been at his best,” Smith said. “We’ve worked on a few things with him this week. Let’s see what happens.”Makhaya will fall into the same place as everyone else. We want to pick the best team for tomorrow. Obviously it is a sensitive issue. We want to make the right decision, so we can win a Test match over the next five days.”In the set-up of South Africa cricket the final decision on the team rests with coach Mickey Arthur once he is given a squad by the selectors, headed by Mike Procter. The triangle of Arthur, Procter and Smith has had few issues over the last year and this major selection call will test the cohesiveness of the home side.”Mickey is meeting with the selection panel this afternoon. We’ll have the team by tonight and announce it [in the] morning,” Smith said. “As far as I know, the selection process is that Mickey will have the final call.”I’ll have an input. But since I’ve been captain, I can’t remember having a vote in the selection. I’m not passing the buck … it’s always been that way.”Either decision will come with significant consequences. If Ntini somehow survives the axe it will create an inescapable feeling that more than purely cricket reasons are behind the decision, but if he is omitted, as looks likely, it will be a tough road back for a player who means so much to this country. There is no black cricketer making a huge push for selection in the near future. Only Lonwabo Tsotsobe, the left-arm paceman who has played three ODIs, is close to the national set-up and he isn’t considered a realistic Test option at the moment. The coming weeks and months will show how free of outside influences South African cricket has become.

Alasdair Gold: Conte may need to drop Moura

Antonio Conte may need to take Lucas Moura out of the team, football.london’s Alasdair Gold has claimed.

The lowdown

The Brazilian has started both matches since the 52-year-old took over from Nuno Espirito Santo last week. He scored in the 3-2 Europa Conference League win over Vitesse, but his impact was limited in Sunday’s goalless draw away to Everton.

In his 71 minutes on the pitch before being replaced by Giovani Lo Celso, he only attempted one shot, which was blocked, and created just one chance. Overall, he lost five of his nine ground duels against the Toffees (via SofaScore).

Former Spurs keeper Paul Robinson has recently hailed the application of the £80,000-per-week forward, insisting that he always gives ‘150%’.

The latest

Writing for football.london, Gold has identified a ‘problem’ with the shape used at Goodison Park, which relies on wing-backs to provide width. He said that it forces Son Heung-min and the opposite winger ‘into a congested area’ with Harry Kane.

As an alternative, the journalist suggested that Conte could switch to a front two of Son and Kane with a central playmaker in behind them.

“It would be harsh on Lucas, who is one the most determined and energetic players in the Spurs side, capable of creating attacking situations out of nothing,” Gold wrote.

“However, the Brazilian’s decision-making also lets him down during passing moves and against Everton, Tottenham’s moves sometimes floundered at his feet.”

He later added: “With Conte’s admiration for Skipp already in place and Hojbjerg being a leader in the team and a key figure, Lucas could end up being the fall guy and revert to being an impact sub and rotational starter as the games come thick and fast.”

The verdict

Could Lucas possibly find joy in another role? The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare suggested last week that he could potentially slot in at wing-back, just as Victor Moses did during Conte’s spell at Chelsea.

Eccleshare wrote that giving Lucas the space to ‘build up a head of steam’ could be a ‘frightening proposition’ for defenders if he doesn’t appear a perfect fit for the position. He could probably operate as part of a front two as well, given that he’s been used as a centre forward or second striker 61 times over the course of his career.

Therefore, while Gold’s reservations are understandable, there is enough to suggest that the 28-year-old might not need to be hastily jettisoned from Conte’s starting line-up.

County match goes on after washout

The morning after Old Trafford’s Twenty20 washout, conditions were fit enough for Lancashire and Sussex to start their Championship match on the same pitch that was due to host England and Australia

Andrew McGlashan at Old Trafford02-Sep-2009The morning after Old Trafford’s Twenty20 washout, conditions were fit enough for Lancashire and Sussex to start their Championship match on the same pitch that was due to host England and Australia. The umpires, Neil Mallender and David Millns, were happy with conditions when they inspected at 9.15am, although they told both captains they would take into account if any bowlers had problems with the run-ups. However, when play began 15 minutes late at 10.45 there seemed few issues as Robin Martin-Jenkins sent down the second over of the day from the Brian Statham End.Jim Cumbes, the Lancashire chief executive, said after the abandonment he believed a county game would have taken place. “We’ve played Twenty20 domestic matches in far worse conditions than that.”There was a significant amount of sawdust on the offending area, a two-metre square block behind the stumps that was deemed too dangerous for last night’s match but Martin-Jenkins was confident in his delivery stride.”There were other areas [that were wet] as well,” said England captain Paul Collingwood the previous evening. “The backward point area was very wet as well. But specifically it was that one area in the bowlers’ run-ups which is a crucial part of a cricket pitch.”With the run-ups for the bowlers and the weight that goes through that part of the ground – especially in those take-off areas – the risk was too great. I spoke to Michael [Clarke] and both of us said if you’re asking your boys to run in 100% then it is going to be pretty dangerous. That’s why the umpires made that decision.”Both captains defended their decision not to try and get a game of some description for the full house, amid accusations that they were being ‘soft’, by saying that it would have made a mockery of an international match. “Of course it would,” Collingwood said. “To mark out wide run-ups just to miss and area and stuff like that, it becomes ridiculous. Obviously the umpires made a good decision.””There are a couple of things there you can do to put on a show for the crowd but the fact is it is an international Twenty20,” Clarke said. “You want to play your full-strength team. There’s no game I play for Australia where you go out and bowl some full tosses so the crowd get a great spectacle. However, Nathan Bracken, the Australian left-armer, said the team were readying themselves to play before the umpires ruled conditions unfit. “I understand a lot of people were there and missed out on a game but we missed out on playing a game as well,” he said. “We were prepared…guys had strapping tape on ankles, guys were walking around the changing rooms with boots on ready to go.”We were right to go and the umpires made the decision that they saw fit. If you start questioning things like that you’re starting to get into really shaky ground, They made the decision that was right. We support the decision they made. It’s the same as if you nick one behind and you’re given out or not out, you accept the decision and move on.”The ECB have launched an investigation and Chris Wood, the pitches consultant, examined the offending area during the lunch interval of the Championship match along with Cumbes and groundsman Matthew Merchant. Wood will file a report along with the assessments from the match referee, umpires and ECB’s venue manager.Earlier this season Yorkshire were heavily criticised when the one-day international against West Indies was abandoned after the new drainage couldn’t cope with a torrential downpour, and Edgbaston also suffered when the third day of the Ashes Test was washed out. So much for a barbecue summer.

Tierney set to miss Arsenal-Leeds clash

Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney is reportedly set to miss his side’s Carabao Cup fourth round clash with Leeds United on Tuesday night.

The Lowdown: Leeds head to Arsenal

The Whites trade Premier League duties for domestic cup action on Tuesday, making the trip to the Emirates as they look to reach the quarter-finals.

While the league clearly takes precedence for Leeds, particularly given their struggles at the moment, a good cup run could turn their fortunes around after a worrying start to this campaign.

The Latest: Tierney set to miss out

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post‘s Joe Urquhart on Monday, Tierney is expected to be an injury absentee for the game.

The Scot missed Arsenal 3-1 win over Aston Villa last Friday with a bruised ankle and he is unlikely to be fit in time to take to the field.

The Verdict: Boost for Bielsa and co

Tierney has been an impressive signing for Arsenal, providing quality and tenacity at left-back – he has averaged 1.3 key passes per game in the league this season – so he could be a miss for the Gunners from a creativity sense.

Should Raphinha be deemed fit to start in north London, he could be buoyed by Tierney’s absence, although it remains to be seen how strong Marcelo Bielsa’s starting lineup will be, as he potentially rotates his squad.

Rangers: GVB could lose Barisic

An update has emerged on Rangers defender Borna Barisic, regarding interest from an English team…

What’s the talk?

According to 90min, Steven Gerrard is eyeing the Croatian international as a potential January target for his new Aston Villa side.

The report claims that the ex-Liverpool man is not afraid of raiding the Gers for some of their top players, as he believes they are good enough to play in the Premier League.

Instant stitch-up

The club are reportedly closing in on the appointment of Dutch boss Gio van Bronckhorst to replace Gerrard and Rangers chief Ross Wilson must avoid stitching him up instantly. It would be a difficult situation for the 46-year-old to deal with if one of the better players in his squad is taken away from him half-way through the campaign.

Rangers are fighting for the Scottish Premiership title and will need their top performers to be available week-in-week-out to give themselves the best chance of pipping Celtic to the crown. Therefore, selling one of them could dampen their chances and leave van Bronckhorst with a harder job than it would be otherwise.

Barisic has averaged a terrific SofaScore rating of 7.18 in the Premiership this season, providing two assists from the left-back position. This is after he averaged a score of 7.40 last term, as he produced one goal and six assists for the club.

Former Gers player Alex Rae previously hailed the Croatian’s ‘terrific quality’ on the ball, saying:

“He performs at good level week-in, week-out and has terrific quality in the final third of the park.”

Mark Wilson added: “He’s the best left-back in the country. He’s improved his defending and supplies assists and is a threat at set pieces.”

This shows that he has the ability to be a top player by Premiership standards and could be a vital cog in the machine van Bronckhorst wants to build at Ibrox.

Therefore, Wilson cannot allow him to leave in the January window as the club are in the midst of a title challenge. It could disrupt their plans and leave the Dutch coach stitched up and left scrambling to solve a problem position.

Worst comes to worst, Rangers should attempt to see out the season with Barisic in the side before allowing him to leave, should he want to, at the end of the campaign. This would then give van Bronckhorst and Wilson the entire summer to source a replacement and prepare them for the 2022/23 season.

Oval development finally gets the go-ahead

Surrey have finally received approval for their controversial development at The Oval which includes the building of a new stand and hotel on the gasholder side of the ground

Cricinfo staff09-Jun-2009Surrey have finally received approval for their controversial development at The Oval which includes the building of a new stand and hotel on the gasholder side of the ground.Although the local council gave the green light to the plan in January 2008, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) asked for the plans to reconsidered by the Secretary of State over concerns that the development was too close to the famous Kennington Gasholder station. The fact that the gasholders, which are also surrounded by dense housing, have been next to the venue for more than a century appeared to make the HSE’s decision bizarre. However, after a lengthy and expensive public inquiry, the plans were passed.A new stand will increase the capacity of The Oval to 25,000, and there will also be a 168-bedroom hotel.”This decision has been a long time coming, and we are very pleased with the outcome,” Paul Sheldon, Surrey’s chief executive, said. “The development is an important one both for cricket and our community. The continued improvement of facilities at The Oval means that international cricket is guaranteed a place here for many years to come.”

Sunderland: Fans react to Niall Huggins injury

Sunderland boss Lee Johnson confirmed on Thursday that summer signing Niall Huggins is facing at least three months out with a back injury.

And, as to be expected, a number of Black Cats supporters have been reacting to the news on social media.

The right-back only arrived at The Stadium of Light in August from Leeds United and has made four appearances in all competitions.

His only League One start came against Cheltenham Town last month, and Johnson has now revealed details of his injury ahead of the club’s trip to Gillingham this weekend.

Johnson confirmed that the 20-year-old has a history of stress fractures, with his latest back issue set to keep him out for a minimum of three months, meaning he’ll miss the rest of the calendar year.

Sunderland fans react

Sunderland wished Huggins well in his recovery on their official Twitter page on Thursday evening. This is what these fans had to say in reply, with one labelling it as a ‘big blow’.

Wolves: Ian Wright praises Hwang Hee-chan

Hwang Hee-chan has been praised by Match of the Day pundit Ian Wright after he scored twice to earn Wolves all three points against Newcastle United on Saturday.

The Lowdown: Special Hwang

Since his arrival at Molineux on loan from RB Leipzig towards the end of the summer transfer window, the South Korea international has scored three goals and has been instrumental in Wolves’ rise in form following their three defeats at the start of the season.

His two goals against Steve Bruce’s side handed Bruno Lage his first three points at home since taking over at the club and took Wolves to 11th in the Premier League table, five points off fourth-placed Everton.

The Latest: Wright impressed

Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day [via Molineux News], Wright stated how impressed he was with Hwang in the 2-1 win over Newcastle, saying: “He has got everything, he has got pace, skill, touch and awareness and he’s always driving to get into the box.”

Wright went on to discuss the partnership between Hwang and Raul Jimenez, after the Mexican striker set up both goals with some terrific hold-up play, comparing the new relationship at Molineux with those Jimenez had previously with Adama Traore and Diogo Jota.

The Verdict: More to come

Wolves’ lack of clinical edge in the final third was evident for all to see in Lage’s first three games in charge, but the arrival of Hwang has seen a different adaptation of play being implemented and it seems to be working a treat so far.

In the 89 minutes that he played against Newcastle, he completed 24 of his 29 passes and scored from both of his shots on target. Whilst he only managed to win three of his seven duels, his pace and finishing were perfect when the chances were provided and he now sits top of Wolves’ goalscoring charts with three goals.

His performances so far for the Midlanders will surely have the likes of Jeff Shi and Lage considering making the move from Germany a permanent one come the end of the season.

Gauteng seeks arbitration to resolve dispute

CSA president Mtutuzeli Nyoka said the GCB had rejected the mediation agreement and wanted the impasse to be resolved through an arbitrator

Cricinfo staff28-Jul-2009Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) board of directors will meet on Thursday regarding the dispute with the Gauteng Cricket Board (GCB) over the stripping of the Wanderers’ international status.Last Friday, CSA had agreed to Gauteng’s request for mediation and had asked the sports ministry to intervene. However, CSA president Mtutuzeli Nyoka said the GCB had now rejected the mediation agreement, and wanted the impasse to be resolved through an arbitrator.”CSA received a letter from GCB’s CEO which in essence rejected our acceptance of an offer for mediation, as well as the Ministerial intervention,” Nyoka said. “Further, GCB went ahead with its own unilateral deadline of July 24, 2009 and sent an arbitration application the day before this. GCB’s intentions to resolve this matter are doubtful.”The tussle started when the GCB accused the CSA chief executive Gerald Majola, the BCCI and IPL organisers of mismanaging the 2009 event soon after the league ended. In response, the CSA members forum warned that the South African board would not allot any international matches to Wanderers unless GCB apologised. If the issue is not resolved, Wanderers could lose out on three matches during England’s tour to South Africa in November-December.

Punjab in do-or-die scenario

It’s a do-or-die match for Kings XI Punjab in this, the last lap of the league matches, and they could not have asked for tougher opposition

Big PictureKings XI Punjab would do well to get Yusuf Abdulla back in as they look to make a final surge towards a semis spot•AFPIt’s a do-or-die match for Kings XI Punjab in this, the last lap of the league matches, and they could not have asked for tougher opposition. Yuvraj Singh and his men have been indifferent throughout the tournament and it will be up to the captain to rally his troops if they are to make giant strides from their current second-last position to a top four spot. But the going promises to get tougher with matches against the top tier teams still to come. The confidence from a win here could provide the fuel for the final push.Delhi have been on song with near-flawless performances this season. They were outdone on two occasions by brilliant individual performances – succumbing to Shadab Jakati while chasing 164 versus Chennai and to Yusuf Pathan’s late tornado while defending against Rajasthan. AB de Villiers and Tillakaratne Dilshan have been magnificient in the middle order while the bowlers have backed them up suitably and played a big part in the team’s success. Virender Sehwag’s lack of runs and Gautam Gambhir’s lack of authority at the top have been minor concerns for Delhi.Form guide (completed matches, most recent first)Delhi Daredevils: WWWWL
There seems to be no apparent problem – the title favourites tag gaining further credence with their remarkable win against Deccan – but Delhi would be wary of complacency. With the teams separated by a few points in the table, they would look to stay in pole position and seal their passage to the final four with a win here.Kings XI Punjab: LWLLW
Bowling has been the biggest letdown for Kings XI Punjab. Yusuf Abdulla, Irfan Pathan and Piyush Chawla seem to have run out of steam after a promising start. The rest of the pack have had forgettable performances – notably Sreesanth and VRV Singh. With matchwinners aplenty in the batting department, Yuvraj would believe a collective effort which results in a big score may just be the only way to ensure maximum points.Watch out forVirender Sehwag: Expect some fireworks from the Delhi captain who has not had a standout innings as yet. The captain would be keen to cash in on Punjab’s weak bowling and bat himself into form. Incidentally, his highest score of the tournament came against the same opposition in a rain-marred match in Cape Town.TeamsSreesanth has received more hurt, following his recuperation from the stress fracture to the back. With two wickets from the four matches at 69.50 at an economy rate of 10.69, he will surely make way for Abdulla, their leading wicket-taker, who has sat out the last three games. Word is also not out on Mahela Jayawardene’s availability after picking up a hamstring injury.
