Alongside a half-century from captain Marcus North, it helped Western Australia take firm control despite four wickets Peter George.Coming into the day, Western Australia were sitting on a 72-run lead with nine wickets in hand and had to rebuild after losing nightwatchman Michael Beer early in the day. No. 4 to No. 9 all made good starts but it was only North and Beaton who passed 45.At one stage, when North fell, Western Australia were 6 for 211 with South Australia well in the game, but Beaton found solid support form Luke Ronchi, in a 37-run stand and then shared a bright stand with Nathan Coulter-Nile, who swished seven boundaries in his 41-ball 35. By the time he fell to the impressive George, Western Australia were well in control with a lead of 365.With his job now done with the bat, Coulter-Nile and his fellow bowlers have to finish off the match on the final day.

Leeds: Joe Rodon update emerges

Tottenham are reportedly willing to sell Leeds-linked defender Joe Rodon this summer.

The Lowdown: Leeds interest

Rodon, labelled as ‘flawless’ and ‘special’ in a Wales shirt by journalist Ian Mitchelmore, was linked with a move to Elland Road in the January window.

Victor Orta and co. were keen on his services in a potential loan deal alongside Newcastle, however, the Wales international remained in north London.

Antonio Conte is yet to use the 24-year-old in the Premier League, and it looks as if a Spurs exit will be discussed once again over the coming months given he is so far down the pecking order.

The Latest: Rodon update

TEAMtalk relayed an update from The Telegraph, suggesting that Conte is willing to green-light an exit for the centre-back this summer.

Their report claims that Leeds and Newcastle are once again on alert regarding the Wales centre-back and both could be interested in a summer swoop.

The Verdict: Orta target?

Jesse Marsch currently has five centre-back options, however, he has taken over the league’s leakiest defence and is thought to be planning a defensive overhaul.

Robin Koch has been linked with an exit in recent weeks, so should he depart this summer, a new centre-back would more than likely be on his radar.

Orta clearly wants Rodon at Elland Road given the interest under two different managers, so a move could be one to keep a close eye on, providing Leeds remain in the Premier League.

In other news: Approach made: 49ers and Radz now in exit talks with club for ‘awful’ Leeds defender.

Openers ease Leicestershire to victory

Matthew Boyce and Greg Smith steered Leicestershire to their fifth County Championship win of the season as Matthew Hoggard took his 700th first-class wicket at Grace Road

06-Aug-2010
ScorecardMatthew Boyce and Greg Smith steered Leicestershire to their fifth County Championship win of the season as Matthew Hoggard took his 700th first-class wicket at Grace Road. The two young openers successfully chased down a target of 169 to give Leicestershire a 10-wicket victory and send bottom-of-the-table Derbyshire crashing to their sixth defeat of the season and their fifth in the last seven games.Boyce, who will be 25 later this month, made 86 and 21-year-old Smith added 52, scoring the runs in 40.4 overs. But It was also a memorable day for Leicestershire captain Hoggard. The 33-year-old former Yorkshire and England seamer claimed the 700th first-class wicket of his career when he had Chesney Hughes lbw during a morning session that saw Derbyshire lose their last five wickets for 22 runs – a collapse that set up the victory opportunity for Leicestershire. At the start of play the game looked evenly balanced with Derbyshire on 238 for 5 and leading by 144 runs. But the innings folded alarmingly as Hoggard and Nathan Buck tore through the tail. Hoggard struck first by bowling Robin Peterson with a perfect yorker in the second over of the morning and he then dismissed Hughes to give him his landmark wicket, 14 years after he took his first.Buck finished off Derbyshire’s innings by picking up three wickets for two runs in three overs to claim figures of four for 60. He bowled Steffan Jones for the first and then had Lee Goddard and Tim Groenewald caught by Tom New. Derbyshire’s slump to 262 all out left Leicestershire a target of 169, but with the ball still swinging and seaming around in overcast conditions it could still have been a tricky proposition. But some wayward bowling and sloppy fielding plus 32 extras helped Leicestershire’s cause as Boyce and Smith cashed in. They both played splendidly, punishing the bad deliveries with boundaries and fully deserved their half-centuries.Boyce’s came off 99 balls when he completed it with a six and a four during one over off Peterson. Smith reached his 50 off 98 balls but it was Boyce who struck the winning boundary off Smith with 45 overs still remaining in the day.It was Leicestershire’s first Championship win at home since they beat Northamptonshire in their opening fixture and their first in any form of cricket at Grace Road since April. They picked up 21 points for the win to keep them in contention for one of the Division Two promotion places.

Finn has faith in ability to adjust

Steven Finn believes he is ready to step up the intensity as England build towards the first Test in Brisbane later this month

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Nov-2010Steven Finn believes he is ready to step up the intensity as England build towards the first Test in Brisbane later this month, and expects the crowd at Adelaide for Thursday’s second warm-up match against South Australia to play their part in trying to unsettle an unusually issue-free England squad.England’s victory in their opening first-class warm-up match in Perth last week was the first time in 45 years that they had launched an Ashes tour with a win, and Finn played an important part in that effort, having overcome a tricky first spell to return decent match figures of 3 for 115 in 34 overs.”We copped a bit of abuse at the WACA last week in that last innings,” Finn told reporters in Adelaide. “It’s something we’re prepared for, we’ll embrace and we’re going to try to enjoy. Friendly banter is good – to make sure we’re accessible as people, we’re human beings as well, and everyone’s got a sense of humour.”You can see the funny side when people are chirping you. It’s part of what we have to expect as international cricketers, and to be able to deal with that is important.”While he couldn’t claim to be entirely happy with his efforts, Finn was nevertheless pleased that he was able to adjust his length to suit the WACA wicket, having started the game with a length that was far too full for the conditions. By the final day, however, he had settled into a decent rhythm that boded well for future challenges.”I slid around in the footholds in the first innings a little bit – but I don’t want to make excuses,” said Finn. “I’m not the sort of person who is going to sit there and say it was because of the footholds I was bowling full.”It might have contributed. But I didn’t bowl well in my first spell and went for three or four an over – which is something I don’t want to do in Australia. I adapted and managed to bowl better lengths. It’s important that process happens quicker in future.”With 32 wickets in his eight Tests to date, and with an imposing 6’8″ frame that ought to be well-suited to Australia conditions, Finn has been earmarked as a vital part of England’s attack, even though he has never before set foot in the country. With that in mind, he is trying not to worry about getting everything right at once.”I was happy with how I bowled towards the end of the first innings,” he said. “It was that first spell that I wasn’t happy with at all. But I’m 21 years old, and understand that I’m going to be inconsistent every now and again. But it’s important that I don’t settle for that and I try to make myself better each time I go out and bowl – and learn every time too.”England are expected to name an unchanged side for the South Australia match, with Alastair Cook the only major concern form-wise, following his scores of 5 and 9 at the WACA. However, England’s coach, Andy Flower, dismissed any doubts, saying: “It’s one game, two innings. I think he’s going to do well.”

Australia keep Women's World T20 title

Australia have retained the Women’s World T20 trophy with a 4-run win over England in Colombo

The Report by George Dobell07-Oct-2012
Scorecard and ball-by-ball commentaryJess Cameron’s score of 45 from 34 deliveries was Australia’s highest of the tournament•Associated PressAustralia have retained the Women’s World T20 trophy with a 4-run win over England in Colombo. Australia, who won the 2010 tournament in the Caribbean, impressed with the bat, with the ball and in the field to inflict just England’s second defeat in their previous 25 completed T20 internationals. While England’s record over the last 18 months or so has been excellent, they looked nervous in this game. Australia were on top throughout. Having set a challenging total, they bowled with discipline and just about held their nerve as England, as their run chase became increasingly desperate, fell to a series of catches in the deep.Perhaps England might still have stolen a win in the end. Australia, with their nerves becoming more apparent by the moment, put down four catches of varying difficulty in the final few overs – Blackwell’s dropping of Arran Brindle the most memorable of them – and with Erin Osborne donating a head-high full-toss for a no-ball in the final over – England could have won had Danielle Hazel hit the final ball for six. She could only mis-time it to midwicket, however, allowing Australia’s women to clinch the trophy. In truth, England had done well to go so close. They had been behind the rate throughout their innings and, but for some bucolic hitting from Jenny Gunn in the dying overs, the margin would have been much greater. Gunn, thumping a four and a six off Julie Hunter, had reduced the equation from 35 required from three to 16 from the final over and, despite Osborne’s no-ball and Jess Jonassen dropping a simple catch, England had always left themselves too much to do.England may also reflect that their decision to insert Australia after winning the toss backfired. While England have an excellent record batting second, by giving Australia first use of a fine batting surface, they allowed them to build a commanding total and then succumbed to the pressure of chasing against a disciplined attack and tight fielding unit. Only three times in their 63 match T20 history had they successfully chased more than 142 to win and, on the biggest stage, it proved beyond them. England will surely also rue the eight wides and no-ball they sent down. Bearing in mind the eventual margin of victory, those extra were to prove costly.Smart stats

Australia won their second consecutive Women’s World Twenty20. In the previous final in 2010, Australia defeated New Zealand by three runs.

The margin of victory (4 runs) is the second-lowest for Australia (in terms of runs) in the Women’s World Twenty20. It is also their narrowest margin of victory against England in Women’s Twenty20 internationals.

Australia’s total of 142 is their third-highest against England in the Women’s World Twenty20. In their group game earlier in the tournament, Australia had scored 144 and lost by seven wickets.

Jess Cameron’s strike rate of 132.35 during her 45 is the highest strike rate for Australia in a Women’s World Twenty20 game against England and the fifth-highest for Australia in the competition (40-plus scores).

The 51-run stand between Meg Lanning and Alyssa Healy is the third-highest opening partnership for Australia in the Women’s World Twenty20 and their second-best in this year’s tournament.

Anya Shrubsole’s economy rate of 10.33 is the highest for an England bowler in a Women’s World Twenty20 game (min 3 overs bowled).

Australia’s opening batsmen set the tone with a partnership of 51 in 41 deliveries. Meg Lanning, taking advantage of some uncharacteristic loose bowling from Katherine Brunt, took 16 from the third over of the innings. Twice she drove Brunt – who also donated a front foot no-ball during the over – through the cover for boundaries, while Alyssa Healy pulled another boundary though square leg. With England’s spinners unable to stem the flow of runs, Australia reached 47 for 0 after their six Powerplay overs. The introduction of Holly Colvin’s left-arm spin brought the breakthrough. Lanning, attempting to hit over the top, could only clip a return catch to the bowler while Laura Marsh, the fourth spinner introduced into the attack by the eighth over of the innings, might have had Healey caught at deep-square leg but the pull dropped just short of Shurbsole. At the halfway stage of their innings, Australia were 68 for 1.Jess Cameron was soon into her stride. Having swept Marsh to the boundary, she then skipped down the pitch to drive her for another. While Healey was bowled after missing an attempted pull, Cameron, whose innings of 45 from 34 deliveries was Australia’s highest of the tournament, brought up the 100 with a very well executed reverse sweep for four off Marsh, before slog-sweeping Shurbsole for six, then ramping and pulling her for fours in an over that cost 17.While Colvin, the pick of the bowlers, had Cameron taken at long-on, Alex Blackwell swept another four off Wyatt and, in partnership with Lisa Sthalekar, picked up the ones and twos as Australia set a challenging total of 142.England were always behind the rate in their chase. While they picked up a boundary in each of the first four overs, they were unable to accumulate any singles and Marsh, frustrated by the escalating required run rate, perished when she mis-timed a drive and gave a return catch to the bowler.Charlotte Edwards looked in fine form, though. Having hit the first ball of the innings for four, she clipped another over midwicket when Perry drifted on to her legs and greeted the introduction of the offspin of Osborne by taking two steps down the pitch and lofting the bowler over long-on for six. Two balls later, she lofted four more over the head of the same bowler and, after their six Powerplay overs, England were 34 for 1.The end of the Powerplay resulted in the field spreading, however, and Edwards’ attempt to hit Sthalekar’s teasing off-breaks over the top resulted in a catch to long-on. Ellyse Perry produced an outswinger to account for the dangerous Sarah Taylor, edging an attempted drive, and with Lydia Greenway also falling to a catch in the deep and Danny Wyatt brilliantly caught at cover by a diving Blackwell, England were always behind the game.

Chennai brace for stiffer test

Chennai Super Kings can expect a tougher encounter against Wayamba

Mahela Jayawardene will want to make up for his duck in Wayamba’s opening game against Warriors•Manoj RidimahaliyaddaBig PictureThere were a couple of surprises in the first phase of the Champions League Twenty20, but Chennai Super Kings emerged with their reputation unblemished after a clinical victory over Central Districts in Durban. Chennai’s opponents for Wednesday’s clash in Centurion, Wayamba, have been quite understated in the build-up to the tournament but promise to present a stronger challenge to the IPL champions. They were beaten by Warriors in their opening game but not before overcoming a horrid start with the bat and creating several chances in the field. Some of their experienced crew, including Mahela Jayawardene and Farveez Maharoof, however, failed to perform, and they’ll be the focus in their attempt to stay in the hunt in this competition.Chennai’s ruthlessness with the ball, on show against Central Districts, will be hard to replicate. Muttiah Muralitharan and R Ashwin shared four wickets in miserly spells. But how they cope in this tournament against a side more accustomed to handling such variations remains to be seen. For Wayamba, the worry remains their pace attack comprising Maharoof, Chanaka Welegedera and Thisara Perera; they conceded 82 in 8.2 overs between them, a performance that does not augur well for a contest against a power-packed batting line-up.Team newsWayamba have pace allrounders Isuru Udana and Shalika Karunanayake in their squad and they could feature in the team’s calculations should they choose to replace any of their seamers. Legspinner Kaushal Lokuarachchi had an off day against the Warriors, conceding 25 in two overs, and could prompt the team to revisit its pre-match plans.Wayamba (possible): 1 Mahela Jayawardene, 2 Jeevantha Kulatunga, 3 Mahela Udawatte, 4 Jehan Mubarak (capt), 5 Kushal Perera (wk), 6 Thisara Perera, 7 Farveez Maharoof,, 8 Rangana Herath, 9 Shalika Karunanayake, 10 Isuru Udana, 11 Ajantha Mendis.Given their comprehensive win against Central Districts, Chennai could go in with the same XI.Chennai (possible): 1 M Vijay, 2 Matthew Hayden, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 S Badrinath, 5 MS Dhoni (capt and wk), 6 S Anirudha, 7 Albie Morkel, 8 Doug Bollinger, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Muttiah Muralitharan, 11 L Balaji.Watch out for…The success of Doug Bollinger has been one to savour for Chennai. He was one of their star performers during their IPL triumph with 17 wickets in eight games at 17.25 and is a huge asset with his persistence and combativeness with the new ball. He picked up 2 for 10 in his team’s tournament opener and will target the Wayamba top order with some of its bigger names searching for form after the first game.Mahela Jayawardene fell for a second-ball duck against the Warriors, a rarity in his stint for Wayamba as well as Sri Lanka in the opening slot. He remains best-equipped to handle Chennai’s pace arsenal up front as well as their spin threat. Watch out for his face-off, if we come to that, against the other half of one of the most successful bowler-fielder combinations in cricket.Key contestsBat v Spin: Ajantha Mendis and Rangana Herath conceded just 43 in eight overs against the Warriors while Murali and Ashwin tasted success in Chennai’s opening game. Wayamba will be relying heavily on their slow bowlers given the lackluster show their seamers put forward against the Warriors. But against a bunch of batsmen with a penchant for finding the ropes, the ability of Mendis and Herath to contain the scoring faces a stern test.Stats and triviaJeevantha Kulatunga is Wayamba’s highest run-getter in Twenty20 cricket with686 in 23 games at 40.35. His average is the best in the team followed by Mahela Jayawardene with 31.28. Thisara Perera is the highest wicket-taker with 28 in 23 games at 17.84. Isuru Udana averages 14.12 for his 25 wickets in 15 games.Albie Morkel will be playing his 129th Twenty20 game on Wednesday, keeping him tied with Victoria captain David Hussey for the most Twenty20 matches played.Quotes”Most of our boys know how to handle him”

Leeds confirm injury boosts pre-Burnley

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa has confirmed a quadruple injury boost ahead of his side’s Premier League clash against Burnley on Sunday afternoon.

What’s the story?

The Whites have not been in action since their 4-1 defeat to Arsenal back in mid-December, and Bielsa has now confirmed that the time away from the pitch has allowed them to get some key players back.

He said: “For the following game, we recover Junior, James, Diego Llorente. Koch had already returned and (Jack) Harrison also, who basically in the last game didn’t play because he picked up an injury as soon as the game started but he has also recovered.”

Fans will be buzzing

Given the extent of the injury crisis that Leeds have faced over these past few weeks in particular, the return of the likes of Junior Firpo, Dan James, Diego Llorente and Jack Harrison comes as a huge boost ahead of the clash against Burnley on Sunday.

You only had to look at the Whites’ bench against Arsenal to see just how much injuries had ravaged their squad, with a number of academy players being named as substitutes to make up the numbers.

All four of those returnees that Bielsa mentioned are starting calibre players, and if they are deemed match-fit, they will surely go straight into the line-up at Elland Road.

Also, given that Leeds are without a win in their past four games in the Premier League and face a Burnley side who are also in the battle to avoid relegation, their returns to action could not come soon enough.

The huge news that Leeds’ injury crisis is slowly starting to ease up is sure to have fans absolutely buzzing.

Meanwhile, this Championship ace “would jump” at the chance to join Leeds…

Kit supplier severs ties with Amir

Pakistan’s kit suppliers, BoomBoom, have suspended their relationship with Mohammad Amir and could also choose to sever ties with the team entirely

Cricinfo staff01-Sep-2010Pakistan’s kit suppliers, BoomBoom, have suspended their relationship with Mohammad Amir and could also choose to sever ties with the team entirely in the wake of the matchfixing allegations that surfaced in the News of the World last week.BoomBoom are less than halfway through a two-year deal as the official kit supplier to Pakistan cricket, while Amir is one of the highest-profile members of the squad to hold an individual deal. However, a statement from the managing director of the company put the relationship in jeopardy.”Like everyone else in the cricket world, we are truly saddened and shocked by these allegations,” said the managing director, Ali Ehsan. “I sincerely hope they are not true. However, we are huge cricket lovers: pure and simple. We believe in, and encourage players to have, the freedom to play, fairly.”The company were keen to stress that their decision was not intended as a prejudicial judgment on the guilt, or otherwise, of Amir, whose image has yet to be removed from the company website, where he appears alongside one-day captain Shahid Afridi, Fawad Alam and Abdul Razzaq.”We cannot allow our brand to be associated with any whiff of corruption or suspicion of foul play. While the suspension of our commercial involvement with Mohammad Amir is not a step we take lightly, we nevertheless feel that it is the right thing to do while a judicial process unfolds and innocence or guilt is established.”BoomBoom is also reviewing its position as official kit supplier to the Pakistan Cricket Board.”

Everton fans slam Townsend vs Aston Villa

Many Everton fans were left slamming the display of Andros Townsend in their game at home to Aston Villa in the Premier League at Saturday lunchtime.

The winger struggled to make any sort of real impact on the match, and was subsequently hauled off for Anthony Gordon in the 56th minute.

He failed to record any shots on goal, and was accurate with only one of his five crosses, while he only managed to make one key pass and was successful in just 53% of his passes (SofaScore).

Townsend also gave possession away on no fewer than on 18 separate occasions in total, one of the highest in the team, despite only playing 56 minutes, while defensively he struggled up against former teammate Lucas Digne, losing out on five of his duels.

These members of the Goodison Park faithful slammed his performance on Twitter, with one supporter of the Merseyside club even going as far as to claim that he was a ‘passenger’:

Rangers transfer news on Antony

Glasgow Rangers are reportedly now following Brazilian youngster Antony as Giovanni van Bronckhorst targets his first signing of the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Busy summer?

In his first summer transfer window at Ibrox, van Bronckhorst will want to put his own stamp on the squad, and so there should be expected to be plenty of incomings and outgoings before the new season starts.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-3/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Teddy Bears have recently been linked with a loan move for Billy Gilmour, but the likes of Alex Lowry, Joe Aribo and Filip Helander are reportedly attracting interest from the Premier League.

The Latest: Rangers following

As per A Bola, the Light Blues, as well as Basel, are now following young forward Antony ahead of a potential move in the summer.

Described as an ‘offensive weapon’, the Gers have ‘collected some notes’ on the versatile talent as they look to start their business straight away.

The Verdict: Exciting

It certainly is exciting for the supporters that the club seem to be looking at summer recruitment already, despite the season not being over.

A Brazilian who is just 20 years of age, Antony is an interesting albeit relatively unknown prospect, having scored two goals while on loan at Arouca in the Portuguese top flight from Corinthians.

Capable of playing virtually anywhere in the attack, from second striker to both wings, RFC will be hoping to add more depth to the squad once the window officially opens, and perhaps the young South American could be a good start.
